ID&T’s Mysteryland is making its way to New York! The world’s longest running electronic music festival will make is US debut over the 2014 Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 23rd to Sunday, May 26th at the historic location of the 1969 Woodstock festival.

The first US edition of the festival will also see the return of Made Event’s Sunday School with a special mini-fest! The legendary party got its start at WMC in 2006 and quickly became a staple at the annual Miami winter conference as the unofficial closing ceremonies. Sunday School will host three stages featuring a selection of today and tomorrow’s house and techno DJs.

Mysteryland will be the first festival to return to the legenday site. Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and CEO of SFX Entertainment explains: “Mysteryland has had a tremendous impact on the music world and it is the logical festival to follow in the footsteps of the original ground-breaking music event, Woodstock.”

“This is more than just a music festival. This is a seminal event that marks the same kind of Revolution in society that Woodstock signified.”

Rapid Fire With Le1f

Offbeat New York rapper, producer and dancer Le1f is currently in Australia, set to wow audiences with some taboo-breaking hip-hop productions. Performing at Subsonic Music Festival this weekend and at Sydney's ARQ Nightclub next Thursday (tickets below), we fired some questions his way. Here's way came back.

LE1F 2

Pulse: How did growing up in New York affect your musical career? Was your particular production and rapping style appreciated and recognised in a city that’s already full of musical talent? Le1f: New York was the most perfect place to grow as a musician. As a teenager returning home from prep school during vacations, with few friends in the city, I was befriended and mentored by such an eclectic group of musicians, from Light Asylum and Telepathe to Drop The Lime and Spank Rock. Amongst other things, what I learned from all them is that having a unique sound is such an important aspect of having a gratifying success in music. I paid my dues to the electronic music community for many years here before I attempted to put myself in the limelight.

As a child and teen how did you get introduced to music and who were the artists you had on repeat? I owned CDs even before I can remember, apparently. I always thought my first album was Aaliyah's first album, but according to my Mom, I already toted a Kenny G record pre-preschool.

You studied dance whilst becoming a producer and rapper, do you think this helped you become a better performer? Do you choreograph any of your own or other artist’s music videos and performances? I studied dance for 18 years, yet none of my videos for mixtape singles have had dance routines. All the movement in the videos to date have been structured improvisations. I'm just surrounded by cool people who know how to work a camera, still or moving.

Your music talks about sexuality and being gay, was it ever a struggle to get your music circulated by the traditional hip-hop outlets in the US because of this? My music hasn't often talked about sexuality or being gay, actually.

Is there a particular demographic that you see yourself making music for? Humans, especially ones who understand English.

What acts have you been listening to recently? DonChristian, Ian Isiah, Kelela, Banks, Junglepussy, Incubus.

You produced the Das Racists’ track ‘Combination Pizza hut and Taco Bell’, amongst other tunes. Do you still work with the group and which rappers have you been producing for recently? Das Racist isn't a group anymore, they've continued their careers as solo artists. I produced a couple songs for Spank Rock's last record, and a few that might land on his next one.

Tell us about your recent mixtape, ‘Tree House’. What was the idea behind it? I wanted to knock out a sex songs mixtape. Just for practice.

What is Camp & Street? What has been happening there of late? Camp & Street is my crew, my mates; DonChristian, Boody, Rahel, Cybergiga, Maxwell Velocity & Norrit.

2013 Highlights: James Pants

$
0
0

As the year draws to a close, it's natural to reflect, especially when it's been as interesting as 2013 has. Underground has become mainstream, mainstream has become pop, and while many fight over the meaning of terms like EDM and deep house, others push stoically forward, undeterred by major trends, continuing to do what they do best. So we've called upon a few of those in the later category to tell us what's kept them excited in 2013. This time, James Pants, talks goblets of mead, Paralax, his newborn daughter and the M&M Robot Orchestra.

The son of two Presbyterian ministers from a small American town, James Pants went from being the teenage DJ for a black nationalist rap group to a multi-instrumentalist, with support ranging as far and wide as Flying Lotus, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan and the always outspoken Tyler The Creator, who calls James “one of the most creative fucking people to walk this earth.” It wouldn't be Tyler's opinion without an expletive, now would it? This might sound like a radical transition, but once you delve into the sounds and ideas of Pants' work, things begin to become somewhat less murky.  If there ever was a tender young age for Pants, it was likely before his high school prom, when he met up with Stones Throw Records boss Peanut Butter Wolf, consequently dropping his debut album “Welcome” soon after. The freshman LP managed to rake together the frantically diverse styles James was after, flushing out a style he dubbed “fresh beat,” a mixture of ‘80s boogie, ’80s boogie, synth experiments, garage rock and much more. Since then James has toured the globe, released Seven Seals (a tribute to his beloved ’70s cult and New Age records), a self-titled third album, and uprooted from Colorado to Cologne, where he works as a studio engineer. So, what were Pants' highlights from 2013?

- Favourite DJ/Artist/Person Of The Year

d’Eon. His Blackout LP came out of nowhere and has been a staple in the household alongside goblets of mead.

- Trend Of The Year or Saying Of The Year

“Parallax" - a trend.

- Event Of The Year

Saw the M&M Robot Orchestra in Ghent, Belgium. Event of the year for me hands down.

- Overall Highlight

Number one - Had a baby girl this year. Number two - Did a 7” record with one of my idols Felix Kubin. Can die happy on both counts.

Listen: Marcus Worgull & Peter Pardeike Debut 'Lenoix' EP on Innervisions

The latest effort from the Innervisions camp comes from Marcus WorgullPeter Pardeike on the "Lenoix" EP. Listen here.

If you've seen any of the Innervisions crew live as of late, or had a chance to check out Dixon's Septmeber Essential Mix, than you've probably heard this little number do what it does best - send shivers right up and down your spine just like every other melodic masterpiece from the German label. This time, Worgul once again pairs up with Cologne based producer and live act Peter Paradeike, coming off the equally dark yet more rhythmically focused single 'Salam' from the Muwekma EP, released on Innervisions early this year. First up is "Blythe," a typically haunting groove buzzing with anticipation, leading over to the title track, which features a signature synth that echoes into the abyss, fit for the darkest basements or the biggest arenas. It seems there will be no slowing down for this tour de force of a label any time soon.

The "Lenoix" EP releases on vinyl December 12  at MTN Shop - www.mutingthenoise.com, and the worldwide digital release is December 16.

Free Download: Ashley Wild's Rework of The Temper Trap's 'Soldier On'

$

0

Ashley Wild has been one to watch as of late, having played parties as far and wide as Burning Man and Glastonbury with his highly successful You Are We night, one of the biggest underground parties in London. He's recently made a fantastic, deep and groovy edit of The Temper Trap's "Soldier On," and is giving it away free. So we caught up with Wild to talk about the inspiration behind the rework, some of his experiences at Burning Man (which he is a huge fan of), his You Are We night, and the forthcoming label under the same moniker. Listen and download, then read on for all the details, and be sure to catch Wild tomorrw at the We Are You Christmas Special.

Talk to us a little bit about the download you’ve given us - what was the inspiration behind it? I really like it when producers work on edits for their sets or to share, as it gives a flavour of their interests. Often a different take on someone's work can open up a piece to a new audience, albeit done with respect to the original work of course. I've done a few edits, and really enjoy producing them and using them in my sets. With this rework, I must admit to coming across the track 'Soldier On' before I had had checked out The Temper Trap, whom I now really like. I immediately loved the vocal and guitar work, and in fact I love the straight rock drop that happens part way through the original, but I used the early part of the track mainly for the edit. It works slowed down and edited and I wanted create a kind of never ending feel behind it. Anyway, enough of the dissection - I hope that people like it and with some prompting from a few peeps I decided to share it. Hey, if per chance the band come across it I hope they like it and would rather buy me a beer than throw one at me!

You come from a really musical family with a background in folk music - something rather different from house and techno! Tell us a little bit more about your childhood. How did your parents take it when you got into such a different style of music? I grew up very much around music. My Dad is a very talented singer and acoustic guitarist in folk and Celtic music, and over the years our house was full of fellow musicians. I spent some of my youth in many a muddy field as my parents were often at festivals, and have run a festival themselves on the south coast for the last 30 years. I must admit that whilst in my teens it wasn't all to my adolescent taste, though I grew to enjoy it, and indeed learnt a lot from the simple song structure and storytelling of folk music. I'm actually in the process of coaching my Dad through Ableton over the phone, which is pretty fun! In terms of the music I make, it really isn't my parents cup of tea, but they can be swayed with few red wines to sit through a couple of demos.

You also co-run You Are We, one of the biggest underground parties in London. Being at the top of the underground scene there is pretty huge. What’s the secret to the event’s success? What can we expect from you guys in 2014? Yes, I am part of a team of close friends who run You Are We, and have been putting on parties for the last 4-and-a-half years. We've always managed to strike a balance to our crowd across a close family feel, upfront music with interesting artists and a willingness to get the small details right. We started off running our free daytime parties in the summer on bank holidays, and it was very much built on a friends of friends vibe. Over time we have hosted additional Saturday night events, and of course have been involved in a few of our favourite festivals, including Glastonbury and Burning Man. We recently took over room 3 at Fabric and not only was it one of our best parties, we felt that the timing was perfect as we got to showcase a lot of our new music to a great crowd and of course on a great system. We can't wait to return in the New Year! This Saturday we have Remi Mazet headlining with a live set. He is an incredible talent and someone we are going to be working with closely with some new projects coming up. He's definitely one to watch. In fact, come and watch and listen this weekend!

Rumour has it you’re opening a Y.A.W. label in the New Year. Well yes, the rumour is right. Myself, Tom Roberts and Sandeman & Dickie from the Wildkats, who are the residents at You Are We, are going to be launching Y.A.W. Music in the new year as a platform to release much of our own work and also interesting artists and close collaborators. Look out for a VA of the artists behind the label for starters, and then moving forward we have some interesting artists who are releasing and remixing with us - so yeah, some exciting things to come. At this stage we can't say too much more, safe to say that some of the work we will be releasing will surprise many but also we can't wait to get it out there. We will be looking to showcase the label later in the year on the road so we are looking forward to spreading the Y.A.W love.

Being at Burning Man over the summer must have been amazing. Any great stories to tell us? Yes Burning Man is a place I would definitely call home now. I've been fortunate enough to have gone these past 4 years, and there are many things you take away with you. It’s hard to talk in summary about the experience. I would say you should visit at least once in your life if you can. For me, each year it's good for the soul and does restore faith a little in humanity. As an aspiring producer there is huge inspiration to be taken from there and as a DJ I have had some incredible experiences out there, but that is just part of the story. The trading you talk of is in fact more towards a gifting based society where you give but do not necessarily expect to receive, however of course there is often a trade. This year we made some gifts from You Are We for people we met and played or partied with along the way, they are very 'useful' thick engraved steel cards which will offer entrance to our parties, access to certain events and giveaways. It was nice to give them out and great to hear they are popping up all over the world.

You’ve just signed to Blue Print Artists? Tell us about how it all came about. I have recently joined the agency and am looking forward to working with Joe and the team there. We have some plans to work closely with the Y.A.W Music label in 2014, so being alongside the WiLDKATS there made sense. In fact, there are quite a few friends on the agency, so that always helps.

Finally, what can we expect from Ashley Wild in the coming months? Right now the label launch is taking up some of my time. Some of my production will be made for the label but I am looking forward to sharing the music I've been working on recently. I'm also keen to improve my overall knowledge across production as having recently taken time out from work to go full time I have a little more time to spare. I've invested in some more hardware recently, namely a Voyager and DSI Tetra which is evolving the way I am experimenting and producing, and this is what is exciting me at the moment. I have some great collabs coming up with Tboy, and both Sandeman and Dickie and also with a good friend Tim Gilgallon from Monikor London - who's dubby techno and house I'm really feeling at the moment. The next release I have coming up is a remix for my friend Pete Zorba on Kaluki and am hoping to pop up on a couple of labels who I have long looked up to. Let's cross things and see what happens. Otherwise, dealing with Insomnia and forging a structure to my week is a priority, a resolution for the new year perhaps!

Catch Ashley Wild next at the You Are We Christmas Special this Saturday, December 7th. Head to the Facebook event page for details.

Der Extraklasse - 'Girl Thang'

Der Extraklasse
'Girl Thang'
[MEXA Records]

Der Extraklasse is a Brazilian production duo with a flavor all their own, and a vibe tailor made for the dance floor. Comprised of Ke Fernandes and Thayana Valle, the duo has been making music for a minute now, but this latest release has brought their brand into a whole new territory of sonic sophistication, and all three records on the EP could have easily taken off as stand alone singles. The EP as a whole rests comfortably inside the dance genre confines - what you will find is a solid three-track offering that’s a sure bet for a great twenty minutes of dance floor fun.

The first track you encounter on ‘Girl Thang’ is the rather aptly titled “Black Rose.” With its darkly lit synths, and a bass line that pulsates and throbs its way through the underpinnings of the song, this track is definitely the right way to start things off. Pay attention at the 1:30 mark and notice how Ke and Thayana strip away some of the high notes when the bass comes in to give it a bigger kick. The whole project isn’t particularly morbid, but the music definitely was crafted with some weight, and putting what is possibly the hardest hitting song at the vanguard was a great strategic choice.

The next two tracks (“Endless Road” and “Girl Thang”) bring things up a couple notches, but they still stay true to the dark sounds that made “Black Rose” such a win. The track elements get more crisp on the high notes, and there is definitely some more definition to the composition, but that driving bass is still ever present, and it’s a great way to keep the project moving. Der Extraklasse has really landed on something good here, and their music shows off their combined talents for production work to a tee. Let all three tracks play in sequence and you’ve got a solid little set on your hands with a great identity and some serious dance music chill-out material.

Daft Punk’s music video for “Instant Crush” tells the story of star-crossed lovers kept apart by uncontrollable circumstances. The video features Strokes frontman Julia Casablancas singing on a platform alone in a room, alternating with scenes of two mannequins in a museum who long to be together. The tale ends tragically as the museum catches fire and the two wax figures melt next to each other.  Watch it below.

SoundPark Radio: More Than Just Music

Here at SoundPark Radio, we focus on the simple things. We focus on the reasons we all head out every night and continue to fly around the world to not only see our favorite artists, but also to enjoy our favorite parties. We have all heard this line (and many of us are guilty of uttering it), “It doesn’t matter who’s spinning, “they” always throw amazing parties.” What drives us to continue to check out the same parties, often on blind faith, time and time again? It’s the “they”. It’s the vibe. It’s the people behind the scenes that create this vibe that make all of our faces smile from sun-down to sun-up – and often sun-up to sun-down.

If it’s your first time, welcome to the park. For nearly a year, we have brought everyone on a music journey from around the globe. From our humble beginnings with New York’s Bespoke & Stranjjur to showcasing the minds behind Zurich based Cityfox, the Colombian Sneakpeak, Berlin based Jackmode & Steyoyoke, London’s Motek, Mexico’s Akbal Music and one that touched very close to home (and heart), New York’s own Sullivan Room Records. From interviews to exclusive live sets recorded on boat parties in Germany, we work to give you a deeper look into what makes the most successful standout from the successful.
