We looked up a few DJ bios on the most gangsta ass search engine there is, Gizoolge.net. Special props ta J.Philp fo' tha inspiration and tha crew at Exclusive Promo fo' spittin some lyrics ta our asses bout dat shit.. Here's what we found, mu' fucka!

Davide Squillace

Davide aint available fo' comment yo. He’s gots ta catch a gangbangin' flight; he’s rushin ta tha studio; tha stage manager is frantically hurryin his ass tha fuck into tha booth; he’s meetin ta say shit bout plans fo' his fuckin labels…or any of tha other myriad reasons why Davide feels like dat schmoooove muthafucka hasn’t slept, smoked or stopped hustlin fo' what tha fuck seems like his whole game. Da realm of possibilitizzles fo' one of electronic music’s leadin lights is endless. Unfortunately, tha minutes up in tha dizzle is not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what tha fuck you ludd n' make no compromises.

Dizzy Guetta

As one of da most thugged-out up in demand ballaz on tha hood, Dizzy Guetta is poised ta take electronic noize outta tha confinez of tha global underground, where he reigns as tha No. 1 Doggy Den DJ. Joinin handz n' forces wit a shitload of tha freshest names on tha urban scene, while introducin some undiscovered talents, another level beckons.

“I’m not tryin ta be credible,” Dizzy admits wit a smile broadenin across his soft, open face. “I’m tryin ta be incredible. It’s straight-up easy as fuck ta be underground cuz you just gotta obey a set of codes. It’s straight-up formulaic. But it’s also straight-up easy as fuck ta be straight-up pop, cuz it’s straight-up formulaic like a muthafucka. I’m tryin ta do suttin' different.”

“Everythang I’m tryin ta do – up in mah DJing, mah thang – be bout pluggin emotion. I aint talkin' bout chicken n' gravy biatch. When I’m makin noize up in tha basement that’s all I’m lookin for. Shiiit, dis aint no joke. It’s what tha fuck mattas da most thugged-out.!”

Tale Of Us

All phat noize should tell a story. Talez of experience. Talez of joy. Talez of ludd lost n' won. I aint talkin' bout chicken n' gravy biatch fo' realz. A Tale of Us.

Tale of Us is Berlin-based DJ n' thang partnershizzle Karm n' Matteo whoz ass is currently re-writin tha rulebook fo' deeply moving, wack electronic beatz. Drop dis like itz hot! Together they share a sonic vision dat pulls together elementz of doggy den n' techno wit influences from pop, nu-disco n' even rock beatz. Drop dis like itz hot! While all of they thangs is instantly recognisable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dizzle floor jams ta low-slung ambient tracks n' mo' abstract compositions fo' realz. Already regular fixtures at clubs like Watergate n' Weekend up in Berlin, Tenax up in Florence, Barraca In Valencia n' DC10 up in Ibiza they have grown up throwin secret loft partizzles called ‘Just This’, up in they hometown of Milan. I aint talkin' bout chicken n' gravy biatch. While both originally hail from Uptown America, Karm started doin thangs up in Toronto n' Matteo up in New York, they moved ta Italy as children, which is where they kicked it wit n' formed tha close hustlin bond dat they now share.

Da rap continues…

Goldie

One of tha UKz freshest clowns n' tha undisputed mackdaddy of tha UK underground make his wild lil' first Bangkok appearizzle up in almost 2 years.

Known fo' his wild lil' film rolez up in Jizzy Bond 007 (alongside Pierce Brosnan) & Snatch (alongside Brad Pizzle) as well as a big-ass amount of prolific UK televizzle work - recently most notably, a BBC show which was a cold-ass lil collaboratizzle project between Goldie & HRH Pimp Harry - cuz of air straight-up soon.

Goldie is still up in massive demand - ghettowide - on tha underground circuit & skits ta thousandz of playas every last muthafuckin week all up in tha ghettos dopest parties.

“I’ve hustled so much from mah mistakes, I’m thankin of makin all dem more”.

Huxley

Hard gots respect from yo' peers be a rare commoditizzle but Huxley, aka Mike Dodman, has it up in spades. Right back up in yo muthafuckin ass. Since his fuckin late teens he’s been producing, seein initial underground success as a garage balla before his sound kinda mutated towardz a thugged-out deeper, house-based sound up in tha past few years. Collaborations wit oldschool dawg Ethyl fo' tha then hot-as-hell Cecille imprint up in 2009 flossed a balla receivin massive support fo' what tha fuck instantly seemed like a gangbangin' straight-up pimped sound.

Since then, Huxley has served up releases fo' a enviable rosta of labels (Tsuba, Morris Audio, Fear of Flying, Hypercolour n' 20:20 Vision fo' starters) n' has stayed legit ta his bangin robust, bass-led strain of doggy den noize dat reflects his wild lil' formatizzle interests up in UK n' US Garage, wit muthafuckas, puntas n' peers lappin up each release n' remix. Whether veerin towardz deeper vibes alongside Ethyl on his own Saints & Sonnets imprint, turnin up in cast iron grooves fo' Tsuba or full vocal barnstormers like his fuckin lauded ‘Let It Go’ single fo' Hypercolour early 2012, there’s a cold-ass lil clearly defined but pliable n' versatile sound ta Huxley thangs dat marks his ass up as a truly talented baller.

Goin forward, there’s mo' of tha impeccable same n' mo' than a smatterin of surprises on tha way from Huxley. Right back up in yo muthafuckin ass. Singlez fo' his cold-ass tight knit crew of labels (he just raps bout dem as ‘mates’), mo' collaboratizzle projects wit tha likez of Sam Russo n' Ethyl, thang projects fo' vocalists (he’s not namin names) n' carefully chosen remixes is all on tha way and, if mah playas whoz ass has heard recent sets fo' Rinse FM n' Fact Magazine will know, mo' on-point DJ sets dat span house, garage, techno n' beyond.

6 Party Drugs That Have Promising Health Benefits

$

0

Adding to the controversy surrounding party drugs, it appears that several substances that typically taken recreationally also have some important health benefits. In fact, these drugs may be more effective than more widely accepted pharmaceuticals in treating serious health conditions such as depression, cluster headaches, post-traumatic stress disorder, gastrointestinal issues, alcoholism, and more.

As more states in the US are legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, it seems that governments are giving greater consideration to these unorthodox methods of treatment. Medical researchers have been investing time and money looking into the potential health benefits of illicit drugs, with promising results.

Ecstasy
MDMA users report warm feelings, high levels of energy, and a general sense of openness. These properties also make the synthetic compound effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

A 2011 study of the drug found that it has anticancer properties, specifically for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Researchers at the University of Birmingham found a structurally modified form of ecstasy was 100 times more potent at destroying cancer cells than MDMA.

Ketamine
In addition to its current use as a tranquilizer, ketamine seems to be promising in the fight against treatment-resistant depression. Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Yale University are researching ketamine “mimics,” which have a similar effect on the brain without the dissociative and hallucinogenic side effects associated with ketamine use.

Cocaine
Leaves of the coca plant have been used in South America for thousands of years for their stimulant effect. Cocaine has already been used as a topical anesthetic during surgical procedures because of its fast-acting numbing effect. Since the drug is a vasoconstrictor, narrowing blood vessels, it has been used to treat minor skin lacerations when combined with other compounds.

Coca also has been found to have profound gastrointestinal effects in South American communities. Dr. Andrew Weil of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine spoke of his experiences researching the drug in these communities. “While cocaine acts as a gut stimulant, other coca alkaloids can have precisely the opposite action. They inhibit gut activity. During my time in Andean Indian communities, I collected many reports about whole coca’s paradoxical, normalizing effect on bowel function, and experienced it firsthand, as well.”

LSD
Although the hallucinogenic drug commonly known as acid has been used for decades, scientists have only recently started researching its implications on alcoholism. A 2012 study from Norway suggests that LSD prevented alcoholics from relapsing during treatment. Study author Teri Krebs explained the reasoning behind this conclusion. “Many patients said they had gained a new appreciation for their alcohol problem and new motivation to address it.”

Marijuana
The most widely used illegal drug in the US has a long list of medical benefits, leading several states and jurisdictions to legalize it. Marijuana’s health benefits include relieving intense pain, preventing PTSD, stimulating appetite for people with AIDS wasting syndrome, reducing nausea, decreasing eye pressure from glaucoma, treating opioid dependence, and improving the symptoms of Chron’s disease.

Magic Mushrooms
Small amounts of psilocybin, the primary hallucinogenic compound in mushrooms, have been found to reduce the negative symptoms associated with cluster headaches, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression.

A 2012 British study found that psilocybin users had enhanced recall. Another 2012 American study concluded that the drug slowed down the parts of the brain that are hyperactive in people suffering from depression.

James Murphy Creates His Own Signature Coffee

$

James Murphy has been quite the busy man. Since LCD Soundsystem disbanded in 2011, he has pursued several other ventures including writing the musical score for a Broadway show, designing the impressive Despacio soundsystem, working with artists such as Arcade Fire and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and plotting a musical subway system in New York. Now, he’s developing his very own signature coffee blend.

He first spoke of his espresso plans two years ago. Now he tells Rolling Stone, “It’s done. I just had some!” He’s been working closely with Blue Bottle Coffee founder James Freeman on the project. “It’s a very neutral espresso with really intense elements. No filler, all really good single-origin beans. It’s lighter than a traditional Italian roast, but not as light as a Nordic espresso… The idea is that it should have a real complexity on the palate, like a single-origin does, but not be difficult on the finish. It should be very friendly.”

He claims that he based the coffee on his own morning drinking habits and those of his girlfriend. After initially struggling to come up with the perfect blend, Murphy believes he has now achieved his goal. “It’s working. I’ve been drinking it for a month now, and I’m super-psyched about it. I even made it in an Aeropress and a pour-over, and I like it.”

Sticky Labels: Tough Luck Records

$

For the third instalment of Pulse Radio’s Sticky Labels series, our own Lydia Laws caught up with Rebel (Jonny Lawrence), Chris Cue and Twon, the trio responsible for the underdog spirited imprint, Tough Luck Records. In it’s short life, this scrappy brand has gained attention from selectors like Joris Voorn, Ryan Crosson and Adam Shelton, while becoming synonymous with raw, industrial tech house and techno fitted with an underlying soul that you won’t find just anywhere. Luckily for us, they prised themselves away from promoting their second EP TLR002, a Various Artist release split across both vinyl and digital formats, to catch up with Pulse.

So guys, how did Tough Luck Records and the relationship between the three of you come about? R: Twon and I met in Leicester about six years ago then we met Cue about the same time through friends doing seasons in Ibiza.

Why did you feel it was time to start your own label?

R: It was primarily about wanting to release music that we love but find difficult to come by, especially from UK labels. We're fans of One Records, Illusion and some of the new labels like Jamie Trench's Roots For Bloom records, but they are mainly known as house labels. We wanted a label that promoted a more continental tech house sound; something that will always retain an underground feel and be mostly about toughened up, raw energy. Chris and I have both been producing and releasing music on various labels for a little while now, and Twon is also developing his production skills, (we actually have a collaboration coming out soon on Moda Black) so it’s great also having a platform to launch our own music the way we want to see it released.

The name is great a really memorable? Is there a story behind how you came up with it? R: It took us ages! We had a brand idea and musical direction, but the names we thought of at first sounded a bit late 90's R&B/Garage. I think ‘Konkrete Kulture’ was one name that came up! (Laughs.) So glad we scrapped that one. I had images of paving, drab, slab artwork; it wouldn't have worked!

T: We were bored of the vocal-heavy deep house sound, which has now become pop music. Our musical taste evolved and craved something a bit ‘tougher’. Tough Luck just came from brainstorming and coming up with something, which matched what we were all about.

Do you find that you all pitch in and work together or that you end up having your own specific roles within the label? R: We try not to limit ourselves to doing individual tasks, but as we live in different parts of the UK, it makes sense to focus on different aspects of the nitty-gritty side of label running. I studied graphic design and illustration at uni, so tend to do most of the artwork. We did some ace hand-illustrated covers for the first release for giveaways, and then also sent a one-off illustrated sleeve to Adam Shelton. Where A&R is concerned, it’s great having three of us because we get to really discuss what we think would work with the label.

What do you look for when on the hunt for new material? With so many artists and potential ‘next big things’ out there, you obviously have to cherry pick the best to represent the label - tell us the Tough Luck criteria. R: For me this is one of the most exciting parts of having a label. It's a whole new form of creativity for me, training your ears to quality and originality and what will fit into what we're trying to do. It can be frustrating getting inundated with big room trance or hip-hop from people who have failed to do any research on your label, but it makes it sweeter when you do get sent a great demo. You always know the ones that have a genuine interest in the label as they understand the ethos of TLR, often on a personal level. Ivnivn was a prime example of a great demo and then a steady stream of really strong music keeps coming from him.

Tough Luck is already on the radar of artists such as Joris Voorn, Jozif and Adam Shelton. Who else is showing TLR some love? How does it feel getting such great support when your imprint is essentially still in its infancy? T: We were a bit nervous when TLR001 - Rebel’s EP, ‘History’ - was released, worrying if we’d done the right thing in starting the label, but the reception was better than we could have imagined! Getting Mixmag’s techno tune of the month was a great feeling and put us at ease that we were on the right track.

C: For a label only on its second release it’s great to see the big dogs of the game giving the tracks a spin, such as Ryan Crosson dropping Alcatraz Harry's 'Mr Dobolina' at Cocoon in the Park afters at Mint Warehouse. That track is due out on our digital bonus side of TLR002 on December 13th.

R: It was a big thrill having Loco Dice playing my track ‘History.’ He's currently at the top of his game and the fact that he picked up on us as a new label was really cool. Onno was dropping Jack Wickham’s remix of my track ‘Funktions’ at many of his big gigs. We’re so grateful for the support.

Chris, you used to be resident and co-runner of SAMPLE, one of the first house and techno nights in Newcastle. How do you find running a label in comparison to running a night? C: SAMPLE was the brains of TLR002 artist Adrian Fairless and his brother. Initially, I was a resident, but as the months rolled, we split the running and financing of the night equally. Running a club night is very hard work - any promoter can vouch for that! Giving a crowd a club full of great music to dance to on a Friday night doesn’t come easy. I prefer running a record label. You get such satisfaction seeing it grow and hit avenues you didn’t think were possible, like Loco Dice's record bag, in such a short space of time.

You’re quite the up-and-comers yourselves. How do you balance your time between your own gigs and pushing the label? R: I don't have another job apart from DJing, producing and running the label, so I can put a lot of time in. I haven't been gigging much recently, but I have been working hard on a lot of new music, which will see the light of day over the next few months. I’m particularly excited about a collaboration I have done with Michael Jansons due out on Lower East in January. Getting TLR off the ground has pretty much been my priority this year though.

C: I still work a full 40-hour week, so juggling between the three can be hard. A lot of my studio work is done after work or on a gig-free weekend. I’m on TwoPointZero’s artist roster too alongside Jody Wisternoff and Martin Eyerer, so hopefully the 9-5 will phase out!

You’re also keen to back artists you believe in, by managing them almost - take TLR new boy Ivnivn. Is there a story there? Is this something you’re hopeful the label will expand into?
R:
I’m really keen on the idea of helping out new artists and bringing them to the fore, especially guys with Ivnivn's talent. The music industry is hard and we've been given a break so it's nice to think we could help other people do the same.

C: Yeah, it’s so promising to see such young talent out there. He’s nineteen, stuck in San Francisco, deprived of house and techno and he's never even been to a club! It shows talent and influence doesn’t just come from a peer group.

Finally, what’s next for Tough Luck Records?

C: TLR002 dropped on vinyl on November 11th, and follows the digital version on December 13th. But to twist things up a bit, we have included four more exclusive tracks! A club bomb from Alcatraz Harry which has been played by Darius Syrossian, Ryan Crossan and Patrick Topping just to name a few. There is a high energy rolling techno track from myself, a dub-techno track from Ivnivn and another peak time weapon from Rebel.

Want 3 Months Free Room And Board In Berlin To Make Music? Here's How

Brooding techno purveyor and producer Levon Vincent is looking for a few young, talented, aspiring producers to come to Berlin for what he's calling a three month musical "boot camp."

As you can see in his Facebook post below, the deal is, well, about as sweet as it gets. Berlin is the world renowned hub of techno, due to its lax and forgiving attitude towards artists traveling to and living in the city. You'll be exposed to some of the best sights, sounds and people in the industry, and since your bills will be paid, you'll be able to focus on the one thing you really need in order to make a respected name for yourself, making quality music. It's an incredible and generous opportunity if we do say so ourselves, and one not to be missed. Hats of to Mr. Vincent, who himself has releases on labels like Get Physical, Ostgut Ton and Ovum. So if you think you've got what it takes, head over to Levon's Soundcloud and get submitting. The competition is sure to be fierce.

Circoloco Ibiza Announce New Years Day Lineup

Famed Ibiza party Circoloco has recently announced their New Years Day lineup, with a typically massive bill including many summer DC-10 regulars.

Along with Papa Sven will be Jamie Jones, Tania Vulcano, the Apollonia crew (Dan, Dyed, Shonkey, though playing separately), Mattias Tanzmann, Laura Jones, Andrew Grant and more. This comes off the back of the announcement that Amnesia, for the first time in years, will be hosting its own New Years Eve fiesta with Marco Carola and Music On (where Jones will also play), meaning the island will be host to (for those who choose to visit both parties, and why wouldn't you, really) massive 48-hour plus celebration to ring in 2014. Flights from the UK to the island are still available, though prices are climbing, so if you're thinking about partaking in some of this hedonistic wintertime action, you'd better decide quickly.

Israel Wants to Legalize All Downloading & Torrenting

$

Israel is hoping to take a somewhat radical approach in fighting the illegal downloading and torrenting of copyrighted files… legalizing it. Although it may seem counterintuitive at first, a group of Israeli legislators believe that consumers are the wrong targets. Instead, they would like to target mass-uploaders while allowing consumers to download as much as they please – music, movies, ebooks, games, and even pornography.

According to the Jewish Press, the government would enact a new tax designed to compensate copyright holders by taxing the manufacturers and importers of the equipment used to make illegal copies. Money generated from the tax would be put into a fund that would pay out to musicians and producers.

The bill was proposed by MK Meir Shitreet with support from other Israeli legislators as well as Israeli music rights organization AKUM. Other countries such as the Netherlands are also heading in this direction, hoping that this strategy will be the most effective in addressing the “seemingly unenforceable issue of unauthorized sharing and consumption.”  What do you think?

2013 Highlights: Spencer Parker

As the year draws to a close, it's natural to reflect, especially when it's been as interesting as 2013 has. Underground has become mainstream, mainstream has become pop, and while many fight over the meaning of terms like EDM and deep house, others push stoically forward, undeterred by major trends, continuing to do what they do best. So we've called upon a few of those in the later category to tell us what's kept them excited through these last 11 months. This time, Spencer Parker.

Beginning his production career in 2005, Parker's productions have been released on respected labels such as Tsuba, Liebe*Detail, Saved, Nite Grooves, Word and Sound, Buzzin' Fly, King Street, Ovum and Rekids, gaining support from the likes of, Dinky, Ricardo Villalobos, Radio Slave, Dixon, DJ Deep, Gerd Jansson and Zip. He's also played just about every club worth its salt, including Rex and Berghain/Panorama Bar, all while running 3 separate, vinyl only labels, of his own, including Work Them Records. So who better to get a taste of the year than this seasoned vet of techno.

ReSolute and family celebrated its six year anniversary of underground parties and music in a two-part, 24-hour marathon featuring an array of talented artists and special guests who hailed from all over the globe. On this anniversary, ReSolute took the opportunity to give back to those in need, both here in NYC and on a global scale. In addition to the great music and stellar party vibes, ReSolute donated a portion of the night's proceeds to victims of the Philippines typhoon. ReSolute also accepted donations for the New York Cares coat drive, helping New Yorkers in need keep warm. Coats were delivered to New York Cares immediately after the party.

The night debuted at a Manhattan venue near Chelsea featuring two floors of acts to ring in the evening such as resident DJs Elon and Connie, with her live act, Jaded Lover with Mikey Dubs. Others who graced the decks were San Marco, Don Ramon from Zurich, Carlos Chiesa, and Cylo. As the night progressed the main floor overflowed into the rhythms of Madrid-based Damian Schwartz, a ReSolute favorite, teasing the senses of a crowd ready for lift off. The room marinated in Damian’s live artistry behind the decks fused with mind-expanding visuals provided by Elena Pito, creating an auditory and visual immersive experience.

Following Schwartz, the spotlight at center stage pointed to none other than the veritable Kiki (BPitch) who eloquently guided the crowd to the evening’s pinnacle, delivering nothing short of prolific as his soundscape created the perfect haiku for such a special occasion. The audience ensued into a frenzy in usual ReSolute style.

Round two of the celebration was held at a secret location in Brooklyn and carried on until midnight of Sunday morning taking all who participated on a visceral journey of sound and visuals by Illuminoti. New York-based DJs, Stefny and Carlos Alkalina, served us the breakfast portion of this epic after party that was wall-to-wall bodies. Stefny is known for her live acts but this night played a hybrid set (live and DJ). Then as the 10am alarm rang, we were blessed with the surprise appearance of the indelible, Francis Harris, whose 3-hour set took you to what felt like the earth’s core. But if we really told you the kind of ride he took us on we’d have to kill you!

For six years now, ReSolute has thrived and maintained its underground presence mainly due to the unfettered love and support of the NY underground community and the dedicated and unique persona that is Nektarios Ioannidis, ReSolute’s founder. This 2013 anniversary party emanated the true underground vibe that ReSolute has remained devoted to throughout the years-- something to be greatly appreciated and admired in a scene where bottle service and boutique DJs reign mainly because it is impossible to stay afloat without them. To give you an idea of the second location, it sells locals Brooklyn pizza during the day and just before ReSolute took over the back room, there was a Jewish wedding held there!

Bravo to Nektarios for staying true to his underground virtues for six strong years, to the ReSolute family for keeping the support no matter the changes in the underground scene and to the artists who provide the music that fuels it all. We look forward to more dancing, more music, and the evolution of ReSolute.

Next up for ReSolute, is the six year anniversary party in Moscow this Friday, December 6th, where Nektarios will bring the sounds of Alexi Delano, Kiki, Camea, Mark Henning and Zorkin to club Pravda.

Die Antwoord is this...in Russian

Remember when Die Antwoord first came out? Remember that album $O$? And that track ‘Evil Boy’? For the most, everything everybody thought they knew about Waddy Jones AKA Max Normal, sort of went out the window as soon as he delivered his new alter-ego ‘Ninja’ accompanied by his counter-part ‘Yo-Landi Vi$$er’ recognised globally as – Die Antwoord.

Having said that, you would be hard-pressed to remember a time when someone failed to say “What the F*** was that!?” when watching one of their music videos, and probably wondered if something like what you had just watched could be “topped”. Someone had come across this gem on the net, saw the connection between the two and felt the need to pass it on, I share the sentiment. They’re called Little Big, and they're from Russia. Watch this video of theirs that features Dubstep, dwarves, scary clowns and bears getting...well, "pomped". “What the F***!?" moment? or are they just trying to mimmick Die Antwoord's recipe for success? You decide.
