Great news for South African fans, Eminem is bringing his Rapture 2014 tour to SA, which is brought to you by Primedia in association with the Dainty group and Showtime Management. They have secured two South African concerts, Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday 26 February 2014 and Johannesburg’s legendary Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday 1 March 2014. This is Eminem’s first visit to South Africa and the African continent...Finally! Tickets will be going on sale this Thursday the 21st of November.

Over the coming weeks, Eminem will reveal the full line-up of Rapture 2014 in South Africa.

Hot off the release of The Marshall Mathers LP 2, released on November 5, has sold well over 750,000 units and is billed as one of the hottest albums of the year which we absolutely couldn’t agree more with. The Guardian said of his recent shows in Britain: “His stage presence is as potent as ever.” Obviously it is, it’s Eminem.

A 13-time Grammy and Oscar winner, Eminem has sold 80 million albums, scanned 120 million singles and had 2.5 billion views online, all very impressive, but if you’ve actually sat down and listened to any of his albums you’ll realise it’s not about this at all, even for Marshall himself, his lyrical genius showcases life in every aspect, the ugly and the pretty and when someone wants to award this with these accolades which is impressive, don’t get me wrong, but with Eminem, well..It’s kind of cute.

Stay tuned for more information on the events coming in 2014.In the meantime listen to Eminem's latest work below 'MMLP2'

New SA label Magique Music’s first release ‘Dark Matter’

Dark Matter is the first ever release from newly launched label Magique Music, a forward thinking musical platform supporting the deeper and darker sounds of Electronica, House and Techno. This single is produced by Lady M one of South Africa's top-shelf artists in the local Deep House scene, and features Tanzania-born vocalist 'Kennifer'.

He has fast become a frequent in the recording studios in Cape Town and has a number of forthcoming releases on the way - Watch this space.

The track comes in tough from the start with a powerful kick, moody atmosphere and an underlying bass intro that sets the tone. It builds up continuously towards the main break where the full bassline kicks in and then builds up again to the main drop where the first vocal verse reveals itself.

As much as Dark Matter is tough and driving, it progresses smoothly with airy melodies and layered vocals, keeping the track's overall sound well balanced. It’s a dancefloor pounder that leaves you feeling both elated and fierce at the same time. Dark Matter will be exclusive to Beatport for 2 weeks and then available on other online platforms including iTunes, Juno Download and Traxsource.

Review: Buntu at L!fe Bar

A fresh party concept, with enough edge and excitement behind it to cut through the din is forever in demand throughout the underground house and techno scene. Buntu launched on Friday at L!fe bar, Brick Lane, with an ethos to provide something different and special to give your musical experience depth. Samantha Blackburn, South African DJ and London based producer, is the founder and innovator behind the promotion. Samantha has made her mark on the London clubbing network as one of the best female talents to emerge on the scene, holding residencies at Get Diverted and Byrds, of which she is also a co-founder, while making appearances at many of London’s coolest and hot underground parties. Samantha made her London debut in 2009 and has since been hot on the lips of many industry regulars. We are now keen to see what Samantha’s new project Buntu brings to the table.

Newly refurbished L!fe Bar on Brick Lane has a loft-like feel with low ceilings, a Funktion 1 sound system and a cool vibe. The sound projection is perfect for the deep, rolling tribal house expected at Buntu. Launching the new night to an eager Friday night crowd were residents Shane B alongside Wallace WD, with their deep, flowing techy beats, which warmed the early birds up nicely. Special guests Ray Stanley and Kid K were next to the decks playing a pure vinyl set, displaying their natural synergy and passion to an intrigued and attentive crowd. Exploring their house and techno routes, Ray and Kid K filled the dance floor with big, bass driven, jackin' house, launching a buzz between familiar faces and friends that created a warm and genuine party vibe.

Samantha Blackburn held the headline set, taking her signature jacking tribal house to a hot and sweaty dance floor. Accompanying Samantha was percussionist Jayondrums, who immediately created a dynamic presence with his high paced, excited performance. Renowned for his talent to compliment music across the genres, Jayon lifted tempo with his high-powered bongo playing, matching Samantha’s rolling baselines perfectly. They created a noticeable engagement with the crowd and between each other, spreading their energy and personality throughout the room. As the crowd responded with their hands in the air teamed with huge smiles, Samantha left Buntu steaming. With a strong community vibe filled with knowledgeable old school faces and new followers, the night seemed a resounding success to all. Another engaging feature for milling guests was the Live Artist concept, to be featured weekly. Friday's special guest was Prism Dynamic, with progressive and beautiful designs, complimenting the urban theme and music policy. This direction brought another interesting angle and compliment to the musical experience at Buntu.

A refreshing, interesting and passionate approach to tribal tech house. Friday night had personality which certainly enticed us for the next Buntu at L!FE.

Booka Shade Album Launch at Oval Space: In Review

Booka Shade, Eve Album Launch Party, Oval Space, London, 14/11/13
Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier have been through a lot together. They first met in a school band aged 13 and went on to run their own production company, producing and promoting early 90s synth pop. Eventually they formed Booka Shade, and in 2002, teamed up with old friends Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung – aka M.A.N.D.Y. – plus Groove publisher Thomas Koch – aka DJ T. – founding the record label Get Physical. There the pair released three genre-defining albums, littered with melodic house hits that elevated them and their label amongst the greats of German dance music.
The duo's new album, Eve, marks their split from Get Physical and almost led the two of them to split up the successful partnership. Album sessions were taking their toll, so they decided to decamp to Manchester’s Eve Studios in order to get things back on track. “We recorded an electronic album in a traditional way and it made us feel like a band again, it was like going back to the beginning,” they mused, and on stage for the album launch party at London’s Oval Space, Walter and Arno looked as youthful and enthusiastic as they did a decade ago.
Brighton-based Let The Machines Do The Work provided solid support, with their recent single ‘Let Me Be The One’ going down particularly well, but the capacity crowd was there for the return of the Booka Shade boys. After a rousing intro they dived right into a succession of old Get Physical favourites like ‘Night Falls,’ ‘Oh Superman’ and ‘Darko,’ all given the customary live extension from Walter and dramatic drum breaks from Arno.
The visuals only really came to life as the duo smashed their incredible new material though, with Fritz Kalkbrenner’s head looming over the audience as he sang along with the trombones and slightly soft rock synths of ‘Crossing Borders.' If that didn’t prove particularly popular, then the muscular bass and diva tones of Chelonis R. Jones on ‘Blackout: White Noise’ got everyone going again, and as soon as the first notes of ‘In White Rooms’ filtered in, the place was bouncing.
Some acts resent having to play their old hits, but Booka Shade seem to absolutely vibe off it, teasing out an extended edit of ‘Mandarine Girl’ to finish the show. As an encore they set off into first single and strongest new album cut ‘Love Inc,’ resplendent with brilliant visuals mimicking Eve’s bold cover art. Arno was so excited by this point that he came out from behind his impressive electronic drum kit to act as on-mic hype man for the obligatory rendition of their M.A.N.D.Y collaboration ‘Body Language.’ The audience were so receptive that they even managed to squeeze in another new one, ‘Love Drug,’ as the one last tune.
They may not have the restrained cool of other Berlin-based dance music peers – what with Arno’s jaunty fedora and Walter’s hands-free headset – but it’s exactly that carefree enthusiasm that makes Booka Shade’s live show so endearing and enduring.

RBMA - Revolutions In Sound 2013

$

0

Possibly one of the most recognised events in the global dance music calander, the concept behind Red Bull Music Academy's Revolutions In Sound is simple; take over the London Eye, invite some of the worlds coolest underground labels, parties and brands and give them a pod each, invite a select audience for each pod and then supply them with alcohol. What could possibly go wrong?

'Unlike anything you've seen before' is probably the only way to describe the event. While waiting for your designated pod to come round, the atmosphere on the ground was a mixture of queing in a fairground to sitting for an exam to those moments just before entering your favourite club. What truly piqued the excitement, however, was the universality of it, wrapping the DJs, their entourage, the public, even the staff, with a warm buzz on a cold night. This is one event that won't be forgotten easily (even with the ridiculous amount of alcohol sweetented redbull that was drunkon the night).

While the concept was simple, the amount of work involved, and sheer logistical nightmare that would have been organising Revolutions a reality was well hidden, as everything ran with a precision often left to the army. From arriving and being collected by the pod marshall (Red Bull brand managers from Leeds) to getting on the pod with a mere minutes window or being served vodka infused redbull, everything was seemless.

Catching Up With Jonny Cruz

Between DJing, producing as himself and as disCerN with Silky, touring around the world, and enjoying life, Jonny Cruz is a busy guy.  The Puerto Rican born musician has spent periods of his life in San Diego, New York, Miami, Venezuela, and Berlin, and will be moving back to New York in only a few weeks to work on bookings for the new Sankeys NYC.  We got a chance to catch up with Jonny after a crazy weekend in Europe including a show at Motek's Warehouse Party to discuss his musical background, some of the emerging talent to watch out for on Touch of Class Records, his upcoming move to New York, why he loves Sankeys NYC, and what else is on his horizon.

This year, you started working with Silky as disCerN. How did that initially come about? What have been some of the benefits of working together? Silky & I met during The BPM festival in Mexico at the My Favorite Robot party. Immediately, we became really good friends, I later moved to London and we decided to collab on a track together. Our dynamic in the studio was really great, so we decided to keep on working together under a new alias. It has been really fun. I enjoy working with people in the studio a lot. It's just a lot more fun when you're sitting with "the right person" and feeding off of each other's creativity. With silky it just works. He is one of my best mates and a truly genuine and amazing person. I love him to death, so I'm really happy to be involved in this project with him.

You grew up in Puerto Rico surrounded by art but what specifically led you to choose DJing? Who are some of your favorite artists/emerging talent to watch out for? I was born in Puerto Rico, but I actually grew up in California. I spent the last of my teenage years in Puerto Rico and that's where I found the passion to start DJing and producing. It basically started from going to raves and crazy underground parties on the island. I got my first set of decks when I was 15 so I have been DJing for 16 years…time flies!

As far as new talent, a newly signed artist to our label Touch Of Class Records, Pattern Drama, are definitely ones to watch for. Their debut EP is coming out in December. They've also signed some stuff to Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream. They have a distinct sound that is heavy and beautiful at the same time, finding the perfect balance between melodics and chuggy beats and basslines. Also the newly born duo that is Signal Flow. They are the head honchos of our label and this pair is making really great stuff, including collabs with myself, Aquarius Heaven, Kevin Knapp amongst others. Wait for their EP coming out on Leftroom Records... bomb stuff!

What is the music scene like in Puerto Rico? What pieces of your home country have influenced you the most and how (if at all) are they reflected in you music? I am a big "old" salsa fan, and I mean like 80's salsa, not the new stuff. The new salsa is pretty much garbage. I can't say it's influenced me a lot though in my music making. I come from a drum n bass background, so I tend to do really grimy basslines, a lot of midrange distorted stuff. I can't escape it, it's what I like, although I've been working on a lot of melodic deep stuff recently.

You’ve moved around a lot, spending your childhood in Puerto Rico, San Diego, Venezuela, and Miami. You’ve also lived in New York, London, and now Berlin. What has your move to Berlin been like? What’s next?  Berlin is great, although I am moving to New York in a few weeks. Aside from my DJing, I am going to be working with Sankeys NYC doing bookings, which I am looking forward to. The Sankeys guys are my really good friends and I have a lot of faith in the club and where it can go, so I am well excited to be part of the family. The place is amazing and I honestly think it could be one of the best clubs in the USA. So thats the main focus... to work with them and make this place legendary… I'm buzzing!

You note Cocoon at Amnesia as the party of parties that got you obsessed with house music - tell us about your time on the white isle and some parties that have changed your life. Well when I first went there in 2008 I was still in the drum and bass game. I saw Richie Hawtin there and I went bat shit crazy. He is one of the most impressive guys to see perform. Now that I am more educated on the scene and parties I would have to say I prefer DC10 and Sankeys. Amnesia is a cool place but I think personally I just prefer the vibe at those other clubs.

You played at the massive Motek Warehouse Party in London this weekend. What was that experience like? Oh man, it was great. Matt Hardinge who runs Motek has shown me so much love and I have nothing but great things to say about that lot. More to come for sure!!!

Touch of Class has been issuing some solid releases including the forthcoming EP by Pattern Drama, and just launched a new podcast series. What else can we look forward to from the label in the coming months? We are so happy. We have a solid line up of releases coming… I think one of the most I am looking forward to is Lance DeSardi from San Francisco. He has a new alias with a studio partner called South Of Chihuahua and it is just next level music. We have a Tone Of Arc EP coming soon, as well as my EP, Navid Izadi... so much great music. We are so excited about how things have been going with the label. It has just worked out so organically. It's the fruit of the best of talented friends coming together and opening a label together. You can just feel it, it works so well!

You recently played for our friends at Sankeys NYC. What did you think of the new space? It's amazing. The sound system is top of the line, and the lighting and the general vibe are just great. It is what New York really needed, especially in Manhattan which is segregated with so much garbage music. Brooklyn has it down with clubs like Output and the various underground parties like Resolute, Bespoke, and All Day I Dream. To have a true underground venue in Manhattan is just great for the city. I couldn't be happier.

What else is on the horizon for Jonny Cruz? I am doing an album for My Favorite Robot, although the process has been really slow, It will be worth it when it's done. Also my EP on Touch of Class, remixes, collabs, and a live act which is in pre production, "Talks at Least."  A lot of good stuff basically... I am happy about all that's happening and what's to come! Life is good at the moment!

Check Out Marc Houle & More at Sankeys NYC

Sankeys NYC has been delivering week after week since opening and shows no signs of slowing down. Friday features Items & Things label boss Marc Houle accompanied by Agoria and Ambivalent. Additionally, Sheik ‘N’ Beik will be capping of the evening with “The Corporation” featuring Julio, Jeffrey Scott and FoNG. Saturday kicks off with New York’s David Morales and Anëk (VIVa Warriors).

Marc Houle has been manning the decks and wowing audiences for more than a decade with his authentic live sets. His obsession with electronic sounds began with the sounds of 80s video games and vintage synthesizers. Houle grew up not far from Detroit in Windsor, Ontario, alongside the likes of his mentor and former label boss, Richie Hawtin, in the thriving electronic music community. Houle has been releasing influential tracks on Hawtin’s Minus imprint and his own Items & Things label for more than a decade, helping define the minimal sound of the mid-‘00s and becoming a favorite among his DJ colleagues like DJ Magda. The future is looking good for Houle as he plans the release of a full-length album in spring of next year and many more remixes and releases to come.

Growing up in rural France in the 80s, Sébastian Devaud, aka Agoria was influenced by the likes of Kevin Saunderson and Jeff Mills. He began producing and releasing his own music in 1999 and is known for his creative mixing abilities. Resident Advisor named his contribution to the At The Controls series from 2007 as one of the best mix-CDs of the past decade. In 2006, Agoria founded the InFiné imprint with his friends Alexander Cazac and Yannick Matray. The label serves as a home for young and new talent and a platform for music that challenges and excites listeners.

Kevin McHugh, aka Ambivalent, grew up in Washington DC before moving to New York in the early 2000s. In 2002, he began producing a series of parties for Creative Time in the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. He challenges the norm with his experimental style, fusing house and techno with multimedia and urban installations, connecting patters of value between various art forms. Quickly gaining recognition for his out of the box thinking, he soon paired up with Richie Hawtin to co-produce the Plastikman show in Mutek in 2004. You may be familiar with his trippy, one-sided conversational track ‘R U OK’, which topped charts around the world and gained a monumental dancefloor reaction. Ambivalent linked up with the Minus team in 2008, moving back to Berlin and touring with them non-stop. Catch Ambivalent at Chalet in Berlin after his stint in the Big Apple.

<br>

Friday boasts a heavy lineup but Saturday is packing just as much of a punch. Brooklyn’s Grammy Award Winning remixer, David Morales, headlines the evening accompanied by the sole female duo from VIVa Warriors, Anëk. Morales grew up in Brooklyn and has been working as a DJ, remixer and producer for more than 25 years. His debut album was released in 1993 on Mercury Records and he was nominated for a Grammy in 1996 and 1997. In 1998 he won Remixer of the Year. His second album, Two Worlds Collide, was released in 2005 on Ultra Records and he has produced more than 500 releases for artists including Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, U2 and Whitney Houston, to name a few. Morales continues to tour North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Hailing from Copenhagen and best friends since childhood, Karina and Denise, aka Anëk, are the first female duo to be welcomed to the exclusive VIVa MUSiC roster. The two have been making their dreams come true since 2001 and show no signs of slowing down. This year has been a big one for the girls as they were residents at the weekly VIVa Warrios party at Sankeys Ibiza and travelled around the world with the Warrior team doing independent shows. You may have heard their production ‘Come Out To Play’, which became the anthem of VIVa Warriors 2012/2013 and was supported by artists such as Marco Carola, Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann, among others. Anëk have set up their own label, Kena Records, and continue to work on new tracks and releases. The next year is going to be a big one for this Danish duo.

The 65,000 capacity event has sold its final tickets to the two-day extravaganza that boasts Calvin Harris, Dog Blood, Hot Natured, Maceo Plex, Axwell plus many, many more all on the same gargantuan bill. Before you sink to the ground and wring your hands in despair and feel the crippling pangs of FOMO, there is still hope for the procrastinators among us.

Festival organisers have given Sydney punters one last chance to purchase tickets in a bid to curtail ticket scalping and stamp out unauthorised third party site ticket sales. Stereosonic will release 50 tickets for purchase each morning from 9am between Wednesday 20th November and Friday 29th November through Ticketmaster; these are not expected to last long so moving quickly is advised.
