Between DJing, producing as himself and as disCerN with Silky, touring around the world, and enjoying life, Jonny Cruz is a busy guy. The Puerto Rican born musician has spent periods of his life in San Diego, New York, Miami, Venezuela, and Berlin, and will be moving back to New York in only a few weeks to work on bookings for the new Sankeys NYC. We got a chance to catch up with Jonny after a crazy weekend in Europe including a show at Motek's Warehouse Party to discuss his musical background, some of the emerging talent to watch out for on Touch of Class Records, his upcoming move to New York, why he loves Sankeys NYC, and what else is on his horizon.
This year, you started working with Silky as disCerN. How did that initially come about? What have been some of the benefits of working together? Silky & I met during The BPM festival in Mexico at the My Favorite Robot party. Immediately, we became really good friends, I later moved to London and we decided to collab on a track together. Our dynamic in the studio was really great, so we decided to keep on working together under a new alias. It has been really fun. I enjoy working with people in the studio a lot. It's just a lot more fun when you're sitting with "the right person" and feeding off of each other's creativity. With silky it just works. He is one of my best mates and a truly genuine and amazing person. I love him to death, so I'm really happy to be involved in this project with him.
You grew up in Puerto Rico surrounded by art but what specifically led you to choose DJing? Who are some of your favorite artists/emerging talent to watch out for? I was born in Puerto Rico, but I actually grew up in California. I spent the last of my teenage years in Puerto Rico and that's where I found the passion to start DJing and producing. It basically started from going to raves and crazy underground parties on the island. I got my first set of decks when I was 15 so I have been DJing for 16 years…time flies!
As far as new talent, a newly signed artist to our label Touch Of Class Records, Pattern Drama, are definitely ones to watch for. Their debut EP is coming out in December. They've also signed some stuff to Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream. They have a distinct sound that is heavy and beautiful at the same time, finding the perfect balance between melodics and chuggy beats and basslines. Also the newly born duo that is Signal Flow. They are the head honchos of our label and this pair is making really great stuff, including collabs with myself, Aquarius Heaven, Kevin Knapp amongst others. Wait for their EP coming out on Leftroom Records... bomb stuff!
What is the music scene like in Puerto Rico? What pieces of your home country have influenced you the most and how (if at all) are they reflected in you music? I am a big "old" salsa fan, and I mean like 80's salsa, not the new stuff. The new salsa is pretty much garbage. I can't say it's influenced me a lot though in my music making. I come from a drum n bass background, so I tend to do really grimy basslines, a lot of midrange distorted stuff. I can't escape it, it's what I like, although I've been working on a lot of melodic deep stuff recently.
You’ve moved around a lot, spending your childhood in Puerto Rico, San Diego, Venezuela, and Miami. You’ve also lived in New York, London, and now Berlin. What has your move to Berlin been like? What’s next? Berlin is great, although I am moving to New York in a few weeks. Aside from my DJing, I am going to be working with Sankeys NYC doing bookings, which I am looking forward to. The Sankeys guys are my really good friends and I have a lot of faith in the club and where it can go, so I am well excited to be part of the family. The place is amazing and I honestly think it could be one of the best clubs in the USA. So thats the main focus... to work with them and make this place legendary… I'm buzzing!
You note Cocoon at Amnesia as the party of parties that got you obsessed with house music - tell us about your time on the white isle and some parties that have changed your life. Well when I first went there in 2008 I was still in the drum and bass game. I saw Richie Hawtin there and I went bat shit crazy. He is one of the most impressive guys to see perform. Now that I am more educated on the scene and parties I would have to say I prefer DC10 and Sankeys. Amnesia is a cool place but I think personally I just prefer the vibe at those other clubs.
You played at the massive Motek Warehouse Party in London this weekend. What was that experience like? Oh man, it was great. Matt Hardinge who runs Motek has shown me so much love and I have nothing but great things to say about that lot. More to come for sure!!!
Touch of Class has been issuing some solid releases including the forthcoming EP by Pattern Drama, and just launched a new podcast series. What else can we look forward to from the label in the coming months? We are so happy. We have a solid line up of releases coming… I think one of the most I am looking forward to is Lance DeSardi from San Francisco. He has a new alias with a studio partner called South Of Chihuahua and it is just next level music. We have a Tone Of Arc EP coming soon, as well as my EP, Navid Izadi... so much great music. We are so excited about how things have been going with the label. It has just worked out so organically. It's the fruit of the best of talented friends coming together and opening a label together. You can just feel it, it works so well!
You recently played for our friends at Sankeys NYC. What did you think of the new space? It's amazing. The sound system is top of the line, and the lighting and the general vibe are just great. It is what New York really needed, especially in Manhattan which is segregated with so much garbage music. Brooklyn has it down with clubs like Output and the various underground parties like Resolute, Bespoke, and All Day I Dream. To have a true underground venue in Manhattan is just great for the city. I couldn't be happier.
What else is on the horizon for Jonny Cruz? I am doing an album for My Favorite Robot, although the process has been really slow, It will be worth it when it's done. Also my EP on Touch of Class, remixes, collabs, and a live act which is in pre production, "Talks at Least." A lot of good stuff basically... I am happy about all that's happening and what's to come! Life is good at the moment!
