Equinox Experience – Second floor at the Play Festival

Showcase: Do It Now with Brian Blaq

Label manager of Do It Now Recordings and resident DJ at The Warm Up, Brian Blaq is on top form at the moment. If you haven’t managed to watch this guy – The Warm Up hosts this resident the first Saturday of every month at the legendary Citilec Rooftop and wow is he good.

Pulse Radio’s Hayley Illing caught up with Brian to chat about who this budding artist really is.

Hosting a radio show every Monday night from 7pm – 9pm called the Soulfull Kollective. What started out as a podcast twice a week has now evolved into Brian, Sai and Jiyane playing host to a number of guest DJ’s, putting out mixes and reviewing all the latest tracks. Brian explains that there was a need for a podcast or radio show that catered for the black house , hip-hop and lounge market and that’s exactly what you can expect on a Monday, music ranging from House to Hip-Hop.

Playing at The Warm Up once a month to regular crowd, how do you keep your stuff fresh? The trick is to keep checking out what other DJ’s are doing, check out the internationals, check out other local DJ’s and try to learn as much as you can. I also constantly check different websites like Beatport, Pulse Radio, Soundcloud.

Is there anyone at the moment who you are absolutely loving? I am digging Chris Ladner and constantly checking him out. Locally, Phat Jack, Tulani da Warrior are huge inspirations. Tulani was one of the first guys I started working with.

Now the label manager of Tulani da Warrior’s label Do it Now Recordings, what do you have lined up for us? Next year see’s the celebration of Do it Now Recordings 5 year anniversary which we are very excited about. To commemorate the anniversary, we are releasing a 3-disc compilation.

With signing artists to Do It Now Recordings, is there any producing going on yourself? I had the Mechanics of House, which came out in February this year. It was a 2-disc compilation, which included my track Happiness.

You can catch Brian Blaq at the next Warm Up on the 7th of December at the Citilec Building or this Saturday in Soweto for the Ubuntu Kraal party. Brian is also opening for the Live house band Torched Soul coming to South Africa soon. You can also catch Brian at the Space Jam Sessions.

“This year set the foundation, next year bigger and better things” – Brian Blaq

Innervisions Preview: Âme - Tatischeff EP

Whether or not Innervisions is one of the hottest house labels in dance music is hardly in contention at the moment, but even less doubts lay with the label's ability to stand out amongst the ever flooded market with an infectiously signature sound. Choosing to release quality over quantity, the Innervisions crew keeps the public wanting more, only scoring the most timeless of tales for mass consumption. Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann keep to this ethos beautifully with their newest effort, Tatischeff EP, which you can preview here.

IV47 is out on November 25.

Fresh from the success of her remix of Lana Del Rey's 'Gods & Monsters' premiered on The Line of Best Fit,  which picked at number two on Hypemachine remix chart and most recently on remix duties for White Lies latest single 'First Time Caller', Mokadem now unveils the video for 'Pretend Ur Mine'. Now with a few high-profile remixes in the pipeline and her first solo EP set for release in January 2014, Mokadem is one talent to keep an eye on.

Marc Houle: Ever-Evolving

$

Marc Houle is giving North America something extra to be thankful for this month, as he takes off on a 22 day tour of the continent. The Minus alum is bringing his live show to 13 cities, including his debut appearance in Los Angeles. Armed with an arsenal of unreleased material and a flair for fun, Houle's performances are delightfully dynamic, and not to be confused for a DJ set. Playing only his own productions, of which he is said to have a thousand, Marc's live show is not to be missed. Never one to conform to a mold, Marc melds techno, house and new wave for a unique synth-heavy sound.

Having gained notoriety in the late 90s as a mainstay of the minimal movement under Richie Hawtin's wing, Marc left Minus (amicably) with Magda and Troy Pierce in 2011 to start their own imprint, Items & Things. This past September saw them celebrate their 25th release, Razzamatazz, Houle's fantastic five-track collaboration with the Brazilian duo Click Box. With Razzamatazz, as with all of his work, Marc continues to push the proverbial envelope. While his sound is ever-evolving, his undeniable dancefloor appeal always endures. We caught up with him from the road as he embarks on his North American tour to discuss his ever-evolving style, some of the gigs on his bucket list, some of his more unexpected musical influences, and what is on his horizon for 2014.

You haven't played in some of the cities on the current tour since 2006's Minus Contakt tour. What do you see as some of the major differences in the electronic music landscape since then? I think overall there's more of an awareness of our type of music. People are slowly realizing that there is some great stuff out there if you look beyond the mainstream. There are more online magazines popping up, people are sharing tracks on their profiles, and places like Youtube and Soundcloud are making it so much easier for the smaller stuff to get found.

Your own style seems to have really shifted from the 'minimal bleep days' to the meatier music on your latest releases. What brought about this evolution in your sound? I always like to learn and explore all aspects of music making... so every album I do is different than the last. Restore was bleepy, Drift was dark guitars, Undercover was new wave, and I'm working on a new sound for my next album. It's me seeing what I can do with music and it's much better than just working the formula. I do still make some bleep stuff in the studio, but that's more for my personal pleasure than anything public.

It's hard to believe, but you'll be playing L.A. for the first time on this tour. Where else have you yet to play that ranks high on your bucket list? There are a few festivals in Japan and Eastern Europe I want to check out and I have never been to Africa but I really really really want to play there. I'm actually writing this in L.A. now and I really love this city - after one day I've already met a bunch of musicians and I saw a great band play at a record store and that was on a Monday...

You've said that you especially like seeing 'small towns and weird shit' when you travel. To that end, where have been some of your favorite places to explore? Once when Troy Pierce and I were playing in Romania our airport got closed down and we had to travel through the country on a bus and stay the night somewhere in a small town. We were walking around and came across one of the coolest cemeteries I ever saw with the fog lifting just enough to take some scary photos of it. It's amazing some of the locations people throw parties in like old monasteries, caves, boats, islands, shopping centers, slaughterhouses, factories, parking garages, indian reservations - people are nuts out there and it's great that I can be a part of it.

What do you miss most about your daily routine when you're on the road? What aspects of touring do you enjoy the most? I have a nice balance going on with my home studio and touring. One perpetuates the other sort of thing. Because I play live, I'm always in the studio making new tracks to play out and test and it's really fun to see people's reactions to some of the weirder stuff I make. Sometimes I am on the road for a long time and I really can't wait to get back and make new tracks. As for touring, it's so nice to meet new people all over the world with the same tastes in music as I have, and I really love meeting fans who come out to the shows. It's so rewarding to know that all the work I do is appreciated by some people and to know that what I did influenced someone to make new strange crazy music.

You have admitted that you don't listen to much techno in your free time, and it's no secret you draw a lot of inspiration from the New Wave movement and bands like Depeche Mode. Who are some artists people might be surprised you listen to? I really listen to as much different music as I can because you never know where inspiration can come from. Looking on my phone now I see The Spoons, Cybotron, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Rush, Madonna, Barry White, Run DMC, Vangelis, Neil Diamond, Queen, The Stones, Genesis and Public Image Limited.

Your press release from 2010's Drift is frequently quoted for saying that the album stemmed from your "personal frustrations with what is considered techno." What was the context behind that and do you still feel that way? Yeah at that time there was a giant flood of boring formula minimal techno. It was a bunch of drum loops that people called music and it was everywhere. Since then there has been a whole bunch of artists that have surfaced with original sounds and actual melodies that have sorta restored my faith in things. I think that having my own label and receiving lots of demos stole my attention away from what was all over the Beatport top 10.

You were introduced to the world of electronic music growing up in Ontario and crossing the border into Detroit every weekend. How would you describe the scene then? It was really great back then. We would drive 5 minutes over the border into downtown Detroit and it seemed like every night there was a party somewhere. We would get instructions, drive to some abandoned neighborhood and roll down our windows to listen for bass and find out where the party was at. They were always in crazy locations and the setups were sparse, but the music was great and the people were all cool. I was really lucky to see that world. Once a year it's so great to get back to Detroit and see the people I knew back then - it almost takes me back.

2013 has been a busy year for you! You released EPs with Miss Kittin and Click Box and debuted your synth pop outfit La Folie with Joaquim dos Santos. What can we look forward to from you in 2014? I've been doing lots of experiments in search of a new different sound. I want to push things again and see what I can do differently - hopefully in the form of a new album. I'm also working toward enhancing my live set, but only if I can keep things small and effective. Last year I started touring with a microphone so this year maybe I can take things a bit further with a bit more gear and some visuals, as long as it keeps things fun for me and the people dancing.

Despite ending their nine-month relationship last year, Skrillex and Ellie Goulding have been working together in the studio on a new collaboration. In an interview at the MTV EMAs, Ellie told a reporter that she has “another track with Skrillex, actually, that’s coming out at some point” when asked what she’s been working on.

This isn’t the first time that the two successful artists have worked together. You may remember Skrillex’s track ,“Summit,” which featured Ellie on vocals or her track, “Bittersweet,” from the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 soundtrack, which he produced.

We look forward to seeing what they come up with this time around!

Pulse Radio is happy to be running SoundPark Radio, a weekly radio show that focuses on a combination of great music and the people behind the scenes who make it all happen, “bridging the minds that create the vibe we all love and the smiling faces enjoying it.” Every Friday, the show will explore multiple aspects of the industry, featuring record labels, production agencies, management/booking agencies, venues, and artists.

Welcome to SoundPark! This week we feature one of our favorite labels of 2013, Akbal Music. Akbal has heavy hitters sprinkled all throughout their catalog. Miguel Puente, Jobe, Max Belobrov, S.K.A.M., Raxon, Martin Aquino and plenty of others have offered their talents to this formidable recording label. Since 2006, their brand of music has steadily grown in reputation and presence with label features in a variety of countries. Their stints at BPM are no joke either. Some of Playa Del Carmen’s most memorable moments come from Akbal Music Label Showcases. Meet Camilo Alvarez aka “Muan.” Muan alongside of founder, Robbie Akbal, help curate and compile the Akbal Music catalog and are staples of their label showcases. Over the next hour, Muan takes us on a journey exploring Akbal Music’s catalog and hints what is in store for this label over the next few months.

Essential Mixing: Machinedrum

American producer Travis Stewart - one half of the Jets moniker with Jimmy Edgar but better known as Machinedrum - took on the Essential Mix over the weekend, dropping a two hour set of footwork, R&B and bass music from himself and names such as Rustie, Jets, Jimmy Edgar, DJ Rashad and OM Unit.

Having released his concept album 'Vapour City' earlier this year which saw him join the infamous Ninja Tune camp, for his debut Essential Mix, Stewart goes for more of a pop flavour rather than murky industrial beats. In his own words:

"For this Essential Mix I wanted to showcase a lot of my production new and old, mixed with tunes and beats from producers I'm friends with. The idea was to make edits and put acapellas on top of different beats to give them new life. It's a little more pop-centric than people are used to, but I can't deny my love of pop music."

Meredith Enforces Zero Tolerance Policy On Trespassers

Meredith Music Festival has issued a statement today warming of their 'zero tolerance' approach to people trying to gain illegal entry to both Meredith and Golden Plains without a valid ticket.

The statement has been issued due to a number of serious issues arising as a result of people attempting to 'fence jump', including personal injury and bushfire risks through adjoining properties and bushland.

"Attempting to get into the festival without a valid ticket is not a harmless bit of fun - it has serious consequences," warns the statement. "Festival-goers and those who missed out on tickets have expressed their disappointment at people who tried to scam or cheat their way in. Trespass is just not common courtesy so it also breaches the festival’s ‘No Dickhead Policy’."

This month 18 people are to appear in court, faced with tresspassing charges in relation to festivals.

14 X-Rated Dance Tracks To Get XXX Rated To

$
0
0

Whether you're getting X-rated between the sheets or on the dancefloor (so that you can get someone back home and INTO your sheets), here are fourteen of the most X-rated dance tracks to get XXX rated to, from old disco classics a la Olivia Newton-John and Donna Summer right through to some modern sleaze from Peace Division and The Prodigy.

#14 Donna Summer - 'Love To Love You Baby'
You might consider this more PG Rated these days, but in 1975 this moan and groan fest was 16-plus minutes of sexual innuendo.

#13 Frankie Knuckles - 'Baby Wants To Ride'
The Godfather of Chicago house gets freaky on his 1987 dancefloor bomb.

#12 NWA - 'I'd Rather Fuck You'
No innuendo here from the defunct gangsta rap trio, just straight up NSFW lyrics!

#11 Sir Mix-a-lot - 'Baby Got Back'
Sir Mix-a-lot's ode to the rumpy busteria is the perfect track to bag that bridesmaid on your next wedding d-floor.

#10 Olivia Newton John - 'Let's Get Physical'
"There's nothing left to talk about unless it's horizontally." Olivia Newton John's 1982 hit was so suggestive that it was not only banned by many radio stations across the globe, but the entire country of South Africa.

#9 Jose Nunez - 'Bilingual'
A fitting downtempo number to get busy to in the sheets. Check the lyrics in this bad boy!

#8 Snoop Dogg - 'Ain't No Fun'
This one's for the G's and the Hoes. The opening stanza houses some of the most sexually explicit lyrics in hip-hop.

#7 Jamie Jones - 'Moan & Groan'
The Hot Creations boss dishes out some sexual grooves for Crosstown Rebels.

#6 Benny Benassi - 'Satisfaction'
If there's a better track to accompany 'The Pile Driver' move in the sack, we'd like to hear it.

#5 DMX Krew - 'Seedy Films'
One of the standout electroclash numbers from the excellent 'Turbo Studio Sessions Vol. 3', DMX Krew's cover of Soft Cell's 1981 synthpop cut 'Seedy Films' entails sweaty, debauched jerk-off sessions in porno cinemas.

#4 Peace Division - 'Blacklight Sleaze'
Clive Henry and Justin Drake's tech-house monster depcits a dark and sleazy world of the life of a stripper. XXX Rated dance floor fodder.

#3 Jimmy Edgar - 'Hot, Raw, Sex'
The title says it all.

Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy (Completely Uncensored) from Max on Vimeo.

#2 The Prodigy - 'Smack My Bitch Up'
The band insist it's not about violence or sex...the video would suggest otherwise.

#1 Mike Dunn presents Mr. 69 - 'Phreaky MF'
The lyrics say it all. If this doesn't get things going in the bedroom, you ain't with a freaky muthaf*cka.

Sydney Police Raid Two Boat Parties Over The Weekend

Two boat parties were raided by NSW Police over the weekend resulting in drug charges for 10 punters, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

The raids were conducted at two charter vessel parties boarding at Casino Wharf and King Street Wharf, with police searching 41 people in total. The names of the parties have not been divulged, however it's very likely that at least one of them was the Frantic E-Motion uplifting trance party which boarded outside Marquee on Saturday.

10 people were charged with 15 offences, including supplying a prohibited drug. One man was caught with 53 tablets of what was allegedly ecstasy.

"These types of intelligence-based operations will continue and we want to remind the public that law enforcement does not stop at the water's edge," Marine Area Command Superintendent Mark Hutchings warned.
