Sample king and boundary pusher DJ Shadow has announced headline Australian tour dates to coincide with his appearance at Perth Festival.

He is widely recognised as a game changer in hip hop circles after the release of the hugely influential 'Endtroducing...' in 1996, which was constructed almost entirely from samples. His last tour in Australia was 2011's 'Shadowsphere' tour that saw him play inside a rotating silver ball; his last full length studio release 'The Less You Know, The Better' was also released in 2011 and featured vocals from Talib Kweli and Little Dragon.

The tour kicks off Friday February 7 in Brisbane and finishes Saturday 15 February in Perth. You can check out the full list of dates below.

DJ Shadow Tour Dates
07.02.14 - Family, Brisbane
08.02.14 - ivy Courtyard, Sydney

The crew over at Start:Cue have grown weary of partying on dry land so they have decided to bring us Start:Cruise 011 - all the same quality tunes and your favourite DJ's - afloat!

Headlining the sea bound shenanigans on Saturday November 30 will be Resonance Records head honcho Max Chapman, joined by all your Start:Cue favourites including Al Hearnshaw and Tommy Rutherford. Tickets are still available; you can purchase them below. In the meantime, Start:Cue had a quick Q&A with Mr. Chapman ahead of the cruise - enjoy!

What kind of artists have you signed to your label and why? We have signed all sorts of artists, from house to techno, newbies to nerds and even some very established artists. All it comes down to is them making cool music that we at resonance love and of course we think the people on the dancefloor will love.  The best part about it is making new friends and sharing the same dream, bouncing off of each other and trying to get our music where we want it to be, and I am proud to say that the label is at a point where we can do that.

You’ve showcased Resonance Records label club nights at Sankey’s in Ibiza and The Egg in London. Which one club in the world would serve your label party best? To be honest it has never really mattered, we always have good friends and great DJ's on the line ups and always end up having a blast anywhere we are, but I have to say if I could choose it would hands down be at DC10.

Which DJ/producer do you look up to/has influenced your sound the most? Funny you should ask! the one thing that sent me flying in the direction im heading, was watching Art Department play on on the same water that i am going to with you guys, its actually going to be a very special gig for me.

Describe your production style in 3 words? Rolling, energetic, versatile

The track you think has been unfairly slept on this year? Cozzy D - Casio

The track you wish you signed to your label? The Martinez Brothers - H 2 Da Izzo

The track I'd play at peak time Start:Cruise? Waff - Call On The Space Invadaz

The Blend with Zebra and Giraffe (Just Music)

Since Zebra and Giraffe released their SAMA-award winning album dubbed ‘Collected Memories’ things seem to have gone in a different direction. With band members coming and going a lot of the time it’s phenomenally difficult to maintain the same dynamic in the sound and pursue what once was, when what was once there is no longer.  Zebra and Giraffe’s latest works ‘The Wisest Ones’ was the result of this, moving on from a straight-up rock radio-hit outfit to something much darker exploring  avenues lesser travelled so to speak.

At this stage you’re probably wondering..EDM? On Tuesdays we do a series called The Blend where we showcase acts somewhat left-field from what we normally do. Zebra and Giraffe fit the bill perfectly with their new album blending electronica with riffs that spawn from the darkside adding haunting vocals to drive it home with the lead singer; Greg Carlin’s incredibly thought provoking lyrical content.

Zebra & Giraffe talking about their career and their latest SAMA winning album 'The Wisest Ones' which features the singles 'I'll Blame You', 'My Best' and 'Sons'. The EPK also features their live performance at the Just Music Sessions on the 4th April 2013. 'The Wisest Ones' is available right now on the SA iTunes store here and on CD at all Look & Listen and Musica stores.

One man. One camera. One tiny show. Thousands upon thousands of photos. Watch here.

As most amateur and professional club and gig photographers know, there are a few unspoken rules that one simply doesn't break when given the privilege to shoot on stage with the artists, and this guy shatters pretty much all of them. According to the YouTube description, he was eventually asked by the band to leave, allowing the 30 or so patrons of the bar enjoy the show without a constant barrage of flashes and photos. We just hope he got his shot...

The man behind the DJ Awards award winning track of the Ibiza season, 'Paper Aeroplane’ is back with another surefire hit. This time he's on remix duties for Belgium's Ozark Henry, delivering a deep, melodic, emotional progressive house mix of 'I'm Your Sacrifice.' Listen here.

Francesco Rossi has made massive waves this year - about as big as they come, really. His mega hit, 'Paper Aeroplane,' was not only a commercial success, but gained praise from the biggest jocks around, including Pete Tong, who even gave the summer anthem the remix treatment. To hardly anyone's surprise, 'Paper Aeroplane' also won 'Track Of The Season' in this year's DJ Awards , as the tune could be heard just about everywhere on the island this summer. Now this Italian jock, who was recently signed to both Ultra and Strictly Rhythm, has turned his attentions to this smooth, emotive remix of 'I'm Your Sacrifice,' which is out now on Beatport. Lost & Found: Guy J Label Showcase at Pacha London

Guy J launched his name to the electronic dance music scene at 21 years of age, and has since been building his brand through an eclectic portfolio of versatility. 2012 saw the launch of Guy’s “Lost & Found” label, a sub-label to the mother brand at Bedrock where he will launch his own work, along with the work of some of his favourite producers. In anticipation of the Lost & Found showcase at Pacha Presents on November 22, we caught up with Guy for an insight into this exciting, innovative and unique musical aficionado. Read on.

You’ve recently finished your 3-month Balance album launch tour, which started in Melbourne. This mix compilation achieved #1 in the Beatport Progressive House charts, which is impressive to say the least! Can you tell as a bit about your inspiration behind the Balance mix? My inspiration behind the Balance mix was to deliver something that you can hear after a while and it still sounds interesting, like other great compilations that were released in the past. If people listen to it in years to come and still enjoy the music and feel inspired, then I have achieved my goal. My Balance was created out of remixes and edits that I’d made from originals that were amazing tracks and I wanted to give my view on them, so all the artists in there are inspiring for me.

Having launched your Lost & Found imprint last year, can you tell us a bit about the label ethos and how this exciting project has been going so far? The idea behind Lost & Found is very simple - release good house music, not only by great artists that are out there already, but great new artists that I believe deserve this extra exposure for what they do. The reactions to the music that we have released so far on Lost & Found have been great and I am very lucky to have been able to sign such gems. For me, that this is what is making the label a good label.

How do you go about selecting your chosen producers? Some of the artists on Lost & Found I've know from the past years of doing what I do and some of them I have just discovered lately through hearing their music. It has just been a matter of making contact with them all to do something for the label and they have been amazing.

Your partnership with Loopmasters is a very unique concept. How did this idea come about, and do you think you will continue to offer this breakdown of components with future releases? I believe we will see more releases like that, there are already some similar projects like that coming out. These days, new producers are already getting a lot of tools to create music, and I think this way they get more tools, but also get some experience about remixing a track, which is also hard to achieve. To create a great remix of a track is not an easy task and practice is needed to perfect your skills.

This winter, Pacha London taking a new approach to its Fridays, featuring underground artists and labels at Pacha Presents like the Ibiza brand. How do you feel about your new label being invited along for a showcase?Well, it is very exciting for me! London is a strong base for electronic music and to have a label showcase at Pacha is a big achievement, as I see it. There are a lot of great artists on the label that are also great DJs, so we are planning to take Lost & Found showcase events to a few more cities around the world.

What do you have planned for the night? For this special night at Pacha, we have Nick Warren, Secret Cinema, and myself playing pure quality music. I’m sure everyone knows their work and how good they are at what they do, so I’m sure it will be a great party! I’m also happy myself because I’ll have the opportunity to hear Nick and Jeroen play their amazing music!

Do you have any more projects lined up for the rest of the year? There is a new project coming on Lost & Found in the form of a mini-LP specifically aimed to showcase upcoming artists. Each release will feature 5 tracks, allowing them to really express their sounds and what they do. I plan to release one of these “Found” mini-LPs around 2-3 times a year, or something like that, and bring some very talented people into the spotlight. The first one, by Dutch producer Navar, will be released on 25th of November, and it features 5 beautiful tracks that Navar took great care to make really perfect, and I'm super excited to release them. You can listen to all the Lost & Found music here: https://soundcloud.com/lostandfoundrec

And finally, any big plans slated for 2014? I’ll just be working on more and more music and building up the label.

Navar – Found01 (Lost & Found) is released on 25/11/13: http://www.beatport.com/label/lost-and-found/27599

Drunk Clubber Goes Out In Manchester, Wakes Up In Paris Toilet

19-year-old Luke Harding started his night out like any other. Pint with mates at the local pub, followed by a (possibly drunken) decision to go clubbing. That's where things change for this factory sheet metal worker, turning him into an overnight Twitter star.

After a night of clubbing at Tokyo's in Oldham, Harding hopped in a cab heading (presumably) back home to sleep off his hangover. Only upon discovering his passport in his pocket did he decide to book a last minute flight to Paris using his cell phone. When Harding came to, he awoke in a toilet at Charles De Gaulle Airport. 'I got in a taxi to Manchester airport and booked a flight on my phone! Don't remember the flight,' Harding said.

'Walked past the Eiffel Tower 3 times! Not a clue where I am!'

Harding took to Twitter to clue his friends in on the mishap, only to quickly become a viral star. 'It's f..ing expensive here though. Mum thinks I'm a pillock.'

Though Harding was able to take in the beautiful sights of Paris, the £300 damage may not have been worth the sightseeing.

Hot Since 82: The Mercury's Rising

$
0
0

Daley Padley’s appearance on the scene asHot Since 82with his debut release on Noir Music two years ago was no covert entrance. Since then his ability to create immensely appealing yet intricately crafted music – warm and atmospheric; driving yet detailed; always stamped with distinctive supple bass and groove – has piqued the interest of Get Physical Music; Warung Recordings; Toolroom Records; and Defected, and late September saw the release of his debut album under the label Moda Black, headed by fellow rising stars Jaymo and Andy George.

Daley’s string of well-received releases under the label as well as his close friendship with the London-based Moda founders no doubt helped to earn him the honour of being the first to concoct an edition of their Little Black Book series. The part mix compilation, part album “was the guys’ idea – they’re working really hard to push the label at the moment and this is their new project,” Daley explains. “It’s a sort of a concept album I suppose, and it delivers something special. It’s like the Fabric series, but less serious if you can imagine.” The release showcases an array of brilliant Hot Since 82 originals; as well as remixes he’s done for Rudimental, Shadow Child, and Green Velvet; and remixes of his tracks by Lee Curtiss, Audiofly, Murk, and Jaymo and Andy George themselves.

He’s clearly quite chuffed with the release, and as well he might be: it’s attracting a lot of attention online, it features a Beatport #1, it’s seeing healthy movement on iTunes and the physical copies (“check this out!” a grinning Daley exclaims exuberantly, flaunting a book-shaped vessel for a double CD and a signed, foil-embossed notebook complete with hand-written sleeve notes and a personal message) sold out rapidly, he reports. A good result, “especially considering it was done in such a short time frame – it’s been a really hectic year, juggling time in the studio and playing shows,” he notes as he readily produces a piece of evidence: a lively snippet of a Hot Natured remix he’s working on at the moment.

But his energy is unwavering. November 30 marks the start of his Australian tour with Stereosonic Festival. “I’ve never done Stereosonic before so I’m looking forward to that. When I played in Australia last year the audiences were cool, there were a lot of Brits there too!” he recalls, ever the patriot. “Some of my best friends live in Sydney and Melbourne so I’m looking forward to catching up with them, getting some sunshine and chilling. It’s a good vibe in Australia and I’m looking forward to getting back.”

The coming months will also see the release of remixes he has on the go as well a couple of EPs, a lusty load of festival bookings and most compellingly the launch of Daley’s own label, Knee Deep. “I’m looking forward to bringing out new music, and bringing up new guys in the same way that I was brought up”, he declares good-naturedly.

little black book

It’s not the first time he describes his peers in a familial light. After playing alongside Green Velvet in Toronto not long ago the pair got chatting. “He was giving me a lot of pointers and advice. I am pretty wise now but he was pointing out that some people in the industry might be trying to shaft you in a way. That’s why I did the album with Moda Black. I’m not the type of person that makes a track and sends it to fifteen different labels. When I make a track I like, I send it to the one label that I want to send it to. It’s a family affair, you know?”

While he’s planning on collaborating with Green Velvet in the near future, he’s also eager to begin exploring new sonic territory. The album’s closing track, ‘The End’ has a moodier, more mature feel than previous Hot Since 82 produce, and is a hint at a direction in which he may travel. “I’ve been wanting to change my sound for a while, even before I was working on Little Black Book. I want to do something a bit more abstract, to experiment with something different. But you have to make it a slow progression, because so many fans have fallen in love with the sound you’ve been producing up until this point.”

hot since 82

Daley’s inclination to carefully avoid alienating his devotees is illuminated particularly by his confident description of 2014 as a year of “doing what I want to do – making new music and playing shows, pleasing all the fans wherever they may be. They’re everywhere, you know? I’m keen to get out there and reach all four corners.” Fitting optimism for an exceptional talent whose future appears undeniably bright.
