Jeremy Olander knows no boundaries in music. Signed on Eric Prydz' Pryda Friends label, Jeremy has been producing high quality progressive and melodic techno for Adam Beyer's Drumcode under the moniker Dhillon. His work has even caught the attention of Billboard, making it to their Top 10 'Next Big Sound.' We sat down to chat with Jeremy about his upcoming show at Club Space Miami, new releases, and his travels.  This Saturday, August 10th, Jeremy will be joined by fellow labelmate, the Norwegian DJ/Producer Fehrplay, who has been featured on Pete Tong's Radio 1 and has singles released on Pryda and Above & Beyond's Anjuna.  Enter for a chance to win (2) free tickets to see Jeremy Olander play with Fehrplay for Pryda Friends at Club Space Miami on Saturday, August 10th below the interview. Contest ends Friday, get your entries in now!

Your Pryda Friends show at Space in Miami is on August 10th.  Have you been to Miami before?  What are you most looking forward to and what can we expect at the show? Yes, I went there the first time in 2011 to play at a party with Dirty South at Mansion, I had just released a track on his label and I was so excited to go there for the first time especially since I had heard so much about the place. It really is a special place [Miami], especially during those two weeks of conference. Ridiculous amounts of parties to choose from and just a really overall great vibe!

I am really looking forward to playing with Jonas (Fehrplay) because we just have a great chemistry. We played together for the first time not too long ago and it just went off, we just kinda complete each other in a nice way. We have similar taste in music, but not too similar! So it's hard to say what you can expect, but I can promise you that you won't be able to stand still!

You said in an interview with Beatport that you originally didn’t like your music labeled as “progressive house” but now you “can’t be bothered.”  What made you change your mind about having your style defined? Well, at first I felt that the progressive house, which I fell in love with, was being pushed back into the shadow of this big room sound. But now I just think it's a bit too pretentious getting caught up with what genre is this and that. Music is music, and as long as no one labels my music as something completely different, I'm fine with it!

You’re from Sweden, do you play there often now?  What’s the scene like? Its funny actually, but I don't do many shows at all in Sweden, maybe once a year. Shame really, since I love having all my friends with me! The scene is cool, we have a bit of everything, but I don't really go out that much in Sweden. You know, once you get to spend some time home, you just feel like going to a local pub with friends and sit around a table and just talk rather than going out. Might sound a bit corny, but that's just the way I am!

You’ve been touring for a bit now.  What city is the most exciting for you to visit? Oh there are a lot of places to mention here, but I'm gonna have to go with Tokyo, I went there in February and my dad came along. I still feel inspired from going there. It's just so different on so many levels and it has become my number one destination in the world. The people here are friendly on a whole new level and the architecture and technology and just everything!

You’ve released some techno tracks under the moniker Dhillon on labels such as Drumcode that have been heavily supported in the underground scene.  Are you planning to release any more productions under this alias in the near future? Yeah, I will have a release later on this year on Drumcode, which I think will contain four new tracks under the Dhillon moniker that I'm really excited about. I think Drumcode is one of the most influential techno labels out there at the moment, so it's a huge honor to have Adam supporting and releasing my music.

What else have you been up to?  Are you working on any future releases we should keep an eye out for and will you be touring a lot? These past couple of weeks I've been trying to rest myself a bit in time for the US tour, but it's hard to stay away from producing. I've been experimenting a lot with different sounds and such. Release wise, I have a new track coming out on Pryda Friends entitled 'Petroleum,' which features the vocals from a Swedish rock band called Kent and I'm super proud to have their support and approval of the record! I've also done a remix for my friend Henry (Saiz) which should be out in October/November. It is a remix of one of his new tracks from his album, called 'Afraid.' It's definitely the more experimental side of me, but I'm really happy with it!

Besides the interludes of announcing track names and radio program shout outs, our conclusion is not too shabby Mr. Tiesto! If this keeps up, we might find ourselves tuning in (gasp!) on Monday mornings.

Avicii Takes Over Ibiza: A Review

Avicii. In just a few short years, the name has become synonymous with packed out festivals, massive club anthems and productions that span every genre and demographic the world over. Having such a wide draw may sound nothing short of positive, but as an artist who’s used to playing festivals that draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands, what can the young Swede do to top himself in Ibiza? Simple – play two of the biggest clubs in the world, back to back, that in total brought us 15-hours of non stop partying, so we headed down to Amnesia to see how the second half of this massive fiesta turned out.

Avicii Ibiza Takeover was the name aptly given to the 15 hour party, which kicked off at the world famous Ushuaia Beach Club in Playa D’en Bossa, where Avicii holds a Sunday residency. The party then made its way over to the infamous super-club Amnesia for a one-off party that brought out the die hard fans into the early morning.

Amnesia resident Brian Cross was kicking things off in a major way on the terrace and when we arrived, keeping the crowd roaring along, packing out the cavernous room with more and more bodies as the night progressed. Brian is an absolute animal on the decks, and can control a crowd extraordinarily well, spanning genres from tech-house to rock, effortlessly tossing in top 40 hits like Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ sampled over Queen’s infamous ‘We will rock you’ beat.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano headlined the main room, and it was clear right out of the gates why that was. Matching the energy in the terrace without question, the duo blasted off with a remix of Breach’s ‘Jack’ that immediately had the room buzzing and dancing. The duo plays hard hitting progressive house, puting their own interesting touch on each track played, giving off a tribal, jungle-house feel that was relentless but well executed. They hardly gave the room a chance to breathe, giving the always-beautiful Amnesia dancers something to really move to.

The time had finally come for the main event on the terrace. Avicii had taken center stage, and the crowd was absolutely up for it. We headed upstairs out of the masses, because by that point, there was sipmly no room on the terrace floor for us. Absolutely packed would be an understatement – there was hardly even space to breathe. Avicii warmed things up with light, melodic house, which was complimented by images of clouds and sky hovering behind him on the giant LED projection wall, working very well with the feel of the music.

He moved quickly into harder hitting tracks, filing the place with energy, putting a a decidedly harder and dirtier twist to his set, mixing in crowd favorites such as his collaboration with Nicky Romero, ‘I could be the one.’ It was an absolute feel-good night that had people truly losing themselves in the moment, not just moving along to the beat. Having brought out a massive range of people from old to young, locals to tourists, it’s clear that Avicii breaks down all barriers, and can bring people together from all walks of life for one big party.

Carl Cox: Back to Back

Tonight for Carl Cox’s Revolution at Space Ibiza, several of its headliners are going back to back for what’s sure to be a marathon of incredible proportions. Davide Squillace will go head to head with Guti, who’ll be playing a live show, and Carl Cox will be trading tracks with longtime Revolution resident, Nic Fanciulli, over in the Discoteca. Over in the terrace, Paco Osuna and Steve Rachmad will be setting things on fire as usual, making for another massive week for this Ibiza institution, no doubt. So we caught up with Carl Cox to find out about the decision to back to back with Nic, the recent trend in major residents playing dates at other clubs and nights, and we find out if Cox has any more big surprises left for 2013.

We’ve seen you go back to back with artists like Loco Dice for last year’s Space closing, and most recently, Marco Carola, which was truly special for us fans. Now you’re going back to back with Nic Fanciulli. How do you choose who go back to back with, and what makes it special for you? Well I had the opportunity to go back to back with Nic Fanciulli at the BPM Festival in Mexico at Playa Del Carmen this year, and we just gelled completely. And of all the times that Nic has played for us at Space Ibiza, he’s always played the terrace, or if I’m not there, he’s played the main room. So I thought for the first time, 'why doesn’t Nic join me with his sound on the main floor and work with us back to back and do what we did at BPM and create that magic?' Because no one’s seen that in Ibiza, no one’s seen that at Space where we actually work together, and we’re both excited by that very much so. I think if we’re excited, hopefully everyone else is excited, and we can create that excitement for the dance floor.

This year has seen a massive shift in regards to bookings, with Carola playing your party, you playing his, Hawtin playing Jamie’s night, etc. Can you shed some light on how all this came about and why you think it’s important? I think if you think about it, many years ago we never had resident DJs at clubs. We were always asked by a promoter or maybe the club management to book a DJ, and since we have had the rise of the resident DJs, we unfortunately get booked exclusively for that one club. And almost, you’re forcing the public to go and see you in one venue, where some people actually really want to see you in other venues and see you work those venues. If I create the magic at Space, can I create the magic at Amnesia? Can I do that at Privilege? Well I know I can because that’s what I used to do before. And I kind of miss the days where I was able to step out of my own realm and give what I can to the other clubs. Also, give the public something different based on their surroundings. So if I’m playing at DC-10 or I’m playing at Ushuaia or Amnesia, you’re going to hear a different Carl Cox sound based on what the night is about. It keeps me fresh, keeps me on my toes, and hopefully the people who say, 'oh you love Space, you don’t like playing Amnesia,’ will have a different view on that. People can also see there’s a lot of camaraderie between the DJs. I think that’s really important so people can see that we’re not trying to battle each other, we’re in this together for the long haul. We are all friends at the end of the day. It’s not all about who’s got the biggest night or is more popular or whatever. We love our music anyway, and if we can unite what we do, it just makes it stronger.

Now that you’ve kicked off an incredible 12th season at Space, what makes this season stand out from every other season so far? I think what’s really good is that we have had amazing nights at our club over the last 12 years now, and people are clear that when they buy a ticket, they’re going to get what they paid for, and then some. One of the biggest things we have as our asset is our PR team. Our PR team has been brilliant all the way through; they’ve been working really hard. A lot of people don’t know how much hard work goes into this. Not just me being there and basically just getting on the turntables and everyone’s going to just turn up. It’s the fact that we’ve got a good team, and I think a lot of clubs don’t have that.

Anymore big surprises coming down the pipeline for summer 2013? You’re going to have to wait and see on that (laughs)! No, no real big surprises. At the moment, I’m actually working on a lot of new music, and I’ve been playing a lot of the mixes that I’ve been doing. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when they find out a lot of the records I’ve been playing are by me. That notion is something I’ve always wanted to do – just make really good club sounds. And hopefully people don’t just judge it because it’s me, but they judge it because musically, they’re enjoying it. So this is something I’ve been working on, and I’m seeing it now come to fruition. We’ve just had the Pure Intec compilation come out, which I’m really proud of and really into, and we’re doing some Intec record tours world wide as well with Jon Rundell, and they’re looking really good this season. And of course we did the Intec Records night at Space, which went really well, so we’re purely enjoying what we do. We’re working hard, digging deep, and we’re still able to enjoy what we’ve created.

Julien Chaptal: The Honourary Dutchman

Born and raised in Paris but a resident of Amsterdam for the past fifteen years, DJ and producer Julien Chaptal turns in a cracking house mix for Pulse Podcast 137, recorded specially onto 1/4 inch tape. Here Chaptal chats to us about what's been happening in his world of late, along with sharing some insider tourist info on Amsterdam and some personal advice to up-and-coming electronic artists.

[
Download here]

Pulse: Give us a quick rundown of what you've whipped together for this week's exclusive Pulse Radio podcast. Julien Chaptal: This is a mix I recorded on 1/4 inch tape with some of the tunes that have been rocking my world. Some of these i have played for over 10 years, others are not out yet, and some are edits I made to play in my sets. I really like recording mixes on tape, it reminds me of the mixtapes i was making as a kid for my friends. The medium also tends to eat up some of the high frequencies and it sounds round and beefy in the low end so it's all a bit more intimate feeling than digital recordings.

Fill us in on any imminent upcoming releases or remixes out soon. I'll be releasing a few remixes the coming months for Luke Solomun, Mauro Picotto, Felipe Venegas and Pablo Cahn. Unfortunately i have been kept away from my studio for a few months so there is no original music coming out from me very soon. It's probably a good thing though as the last releases on Defected, Supplement Facts and Supernature need space to breathe! I am now back in Amsterdam with a head banging full of ideas so i do expect something will burst out again soon, maybe an album?

Daft Punk lover or hater? Give us your take on the most anticipated album release of 2013, if ever, 'Random Access Memories'. Daft Punk has actually been super influential for me over the years. 'Homework' is certainly one of the albums that has given me the inspiration to do what i do today. I still listen to it. This new one sounds absolutely gorgeous, I read they spent over a million dollars on it and I can hear that. However i've only listened to it once so far, I'm sure it needs more listens but it didn't touch me very deeply musically.

Name three records or tracks seared into your soul and etched into memory because of an associated unforgettable moment or milestone in your life. Joe Smooth - 'Promised Land'. This one was a revelation for me. I was a kid when I first heard it, i guess it was at the end of the 80's. It's one of the tracks that put house music on the map and crossed over to the mainstream. Still one of my favorite tracks ever.

Octave One - 'Blackwater'. This is the track I always end the night with when I play at Studio 80. It's such an epic track and Ann Saunderson's performance is just so...I get goosebumps every time I hear it and it's got many memories attached to it.

Talking Heads - 'This Must Be The Place'. This one isn't dance music but has been on heavy rotation at home for years. It's always associated to the start of a great day with my girl. Listen to the lyrics, David Byrne hits right on the spot.

What feeds your soul more, producing or performing, and why? There is definitely no winner in my mind in this contest. It's like trying to ask myself if I have more affinity with wine than cheese! They go hand in hand and are both soul food essentials to my well being. I shouldn't spend too much time out of the studio though, I've realized this recently when I got back in to work on a new liveset, my machines were crackling. These things have a life of their own and need a good share of lovin'.

You and David Labeij have a history of collaboration and quite a firm friendship. How did the two of you meet and give us a little overview of this passionate bromance. David and I met around 2000, we were both working at the Melkweg, a live venue in Amsterdam. I was a sound tech there so when David started making music he asked me for tips and we would spend some time listening to our tracks on the big system. We then went on to release music on the same label and soon formed a band with Kabale Und Liebe, Lauhaus, Boris Werner and Gert Van Veen from Quazar, called Amsterdam 661. Since then we've all been playing a lot together and David and I though it was about time we started a label together last year, MFD. It stands for anything you like: My Favourite Dragon, Music For Ducks, My Friend's Dog. It's a real fun project where we mostly use machines at the heart of the productions and subsequently we have also been performing live together as MFD with a bunch of hardware. You won't find it on beatport though, the music is only out on vinyl.

Blood, sweat, tears as well as many hours of passion, indomitable will and hard work are the cornerstones of longevity in this industry. If you could share one piece of invaluable industry advice with young, aspiring DJs or producers, what would it be? I'd say that it's all too easy to start applying a formula to your productions or DJ sets once you have had a breakthrough with a certain track or sound. Everybody tries to put you in a box and also pushes you to produce a track or a remix that sounds just like that track of yours that everyone was raving about the previous month. If that's what you want, and you indeed enjoy making this one thing only, then by all means, go for it and stick to your guns. But the most of us actually enjoy producing different types of tracks and surely as a DJ there is nothing holding you from playing a Marvin Gaye tune in the middle of a techno set if that's your bag. So i'd say the advice is to keep doing what you love, and only that.

Let's say Team Pulse just landed at Schipol. As an honorary Dutchman who has lived in Amsterdam for almost 15 years, we are assigning you as our official tourist guide. Give us your list of tourist must do's in the city. Checkout Roest - it's a creative space located on a canal in the east of the city where you can do things like watching a film with a cocktail in your hand on the city beach, or being head to head with a cow in the stable while listening to a band playing in the background. If you're visiting in the summer you definitely have to find time to chill in one of the many parks, the Westerpark is a nice place to go to, and there's the Westergasfabriek next to it with cinema, theater, bars and restaurants, and of course the Gashouder, a massive venue hosting events like Awakenings. The Studio 80 is unmissable for any globe trotting club goer, my favorite club in town and where I have a residency. It's a rather small venue with two rooms, and it's all about good sound and quality music. And finally for a nice bite to eat reserve a table at Toscanini in the Jordaan. Yum!

How many hours would you say you've wasted in airport lounges across the globe over the course of your career? Do you have a favourite boredom curbing activity to kill the time? I seriously can't count the amount of hours I have spent in airports waiting for a ride but I can tell you it's not my favorite thing to do, surely not when i'm on my way home. I do actually like to make music when going to a gig or listen to new tracks to put in my sets, I do that very loud on the headphones. From the looks on peoples faces around me, I'm not making many friends when i do that.

You seem to have cemented quite a strong South African fan base in the recent past. Any memorable moments from your previous visits to share with us? And any plans for a return visit to in the near future? Yes, I feel super lucky to have had such a good connection with people there. I was there the last time for the new year parties this year and I couldn't think of a better place to be. It was my second time playing at Truth in Johannesburg and these were both memorable moments. Being jumped on by a young lion at the lion park the morning after a night out was another thing I won't forget! Seriously though I think all the parties I played at there were freaking awesome, everybody I met and saw there on dancefloors lives for and breathes electronic music from a young age, and it's everywhere. It's a very passionate affair. I'll be back next month at the end of September doing a tour with a few dates in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Tell us about your most bizarre encounter with a fan. This guy came up to me in Newcastle once after I played a live set. He was asking me questions and telling me how much he liked the set, obviously he was having a good time...maybe too much of a good time. A photographer came by and took a picture of us and when she showed it to me I saw the guys had actually taken his pants down!

I'm sure you heard the urban myth that DJs don't dance. Fact or fiction? Does Julien Chaptal ever embrace an undeniable urge to get down and dirty on the dancefloor to a random DJ's set? For mosts of the time it's true, I wouldn't call what I do dancing, I guess bobbing would be more accurate. It does happen though - last week I danced my ass off at the Welcome To The Future festival listening to my buddies Eric De Man and Aron Friedman, aka, Musclefarm. And that felt gooood!

Major Lazer Cop The Worst Interviewer...Ever?

$

Musicians are often known for being an irritable bunch at times and often not in the mood for their 322nd interview of the day. One such example that sticks out clear in the mind is when the Aussie VJ known as Jabba interviewed a surly Mike Patton during Tomohawk's tour with the Big Day Out festival many moons ago (watch the video in all its awkward glory here).

On the other hand, you can't really blame the musicians when their interviewer is a painful sort, and poor old Diplo and co, aka Major Lazer, definitely copped just that during the recent Lollapalooza festival. A tip to the interviewer: When things aren't going so well, mocking the artist usually doesn't help. Banter yes, mock no.

Avicii takes Over Amnesia Ibiza: In Review

Black Asteroid's 22 Tracks For Mysterland

Brian, tell us about your times playing at mysteryland festival... What keeps the event special? I played once in 2007 with my band MOTOR. i recall being overwhelmed by sunlight, colors and smiling faces. its a stark contrast to the usual club experience. Mysteryland is always the most anticipated outdoor festival in holland- and this will be my first time as Black Asteroid.

You've made a special mix containing 22 tracks from the Electric Deluxe camp - is this selection very dance floor focused in nature? When visiting the EDLX catalog, i realized how the label's sound is not focused purely on the dance floor. EDLX allow artists to experience with sounds and textures that you don't hear as much at other techno imprints. so with this mix, you have the option to dance or geek out on headphones.

What's been your best - and worst - festival experience? The most memorable experience was last year's Amsterdam Dance Event.  I remember waking up at 8 am, getting a coffee and going to a sweaty after-hours rave at Melkweg to debut my new DJ set between Len Faki and Speedy J. it was the most intimidating and rewarding experience so far.

What have you got coming up release wise in the coming months? I will have 2 new EP's coming out on Electric Deluxe and CLR. also a slew of remixes for artists such as Depeche Mode, Huoratron, Bloody Beetroots, Brian Burger, Erphun, Bunker 44& Jeaven, Go Fight, and Martyn Ware's B.E.F. project
