Pulse Radio Presents KaZantip Bound: Ardalan

Pulse Radio is heading out to the Republic of Kazantip this summer! We're very excited to join in with countless paradiZers, old and new, in the event that marks the freedom of love and expression in the town of Popivka in Ukraine. As we prepare to go, we are chatting with a few of the DJs who are playing this grand gathering with over 300 acts, to find out how they pack for such a trip, hear their KaZantip stories, and see what they have been up to. Read on to uncover more about not just the artists, but the history of the KaZantip Republic as well.

He may be young, but Ardalan is a force to be reckoned with. Not just a remix master, Ardalan has a few anthemic productions that have been already charted by Diplo and Dog Blood, as well as other works that have been supported by underground stars like Maya Jane Coles and Audiojack. His hip-hop flavored house productions are housed on the Dirtybird label, which has always been his dream. Ardalan has received a lot of support from its head honcho and it's become pretty apparent that Claude von Stroke has a knack for picking up young talent right from the start. Originally fromTehran, Iran and currently residing in San Francisco, Ardalan is about to embark on his Kazantip Republic adventure. We caught up with him to see what he has been up to this summer and how would a "dictatorship of happiness" look to him.

Which parties will you be playing in The Republic of Kazantip this season? I will be playing the Dirtybird showcase on the 10th of August.

Have you been before? If yes, everyone seems to have a few memories to share about the experience.  What do you think of when kaZantip comes to mind? I have never been. But my friends used to always talk about it and show me videos and pictures. So every time it comes to my mind, I feel like it's something out of a magical dream.

Kazantip draws paradiZers (as attendees are called) from around the world, but a lot come from Russia.  Have you had experience playing in Russia before? How would you describe the crowd? I have never played in Russia. In fact, Kazantip will be my first in Europe! I'm sure the crowd will be crazy and fun.

Kazantip requires a viZa which concert-goers purchase as you would a ticket.  Is there a time when a visa problem has prevent you from playing a gig or delayed you significantly? Fortunately I haven't had a problem with visas and nor do I hope to have in the future. I hope?!

Kazantip's symbol is its yellow suitcases called chamadans, which when decorated allow paradiZers to attend for free when they apply to the republic.  As a traveling artist what’s a good packing tip you can share with our readers?  If you’re bringing equipment with you, how do you make sure to fit it all in? My advice would be to always travel simple. Bring only what's necessary. I'm sure it would be nice to bring that one extra polo shirt (which you know looks the best on you), but forget it, the ladies/gents will still love you for who you are, don't be a diva. As for equipment, I only bring a couple records and usb's for the most part, thanks to technology.

Kazantip marks the second half of the summer season, what have been some of your standout experiences this season? I just finished university and have been going on a busy schedule since. I just played a festival in the deep mountains of California. Before that I DJed on a boat in Hawaii, which was quite an amazing experience this season.

Kazantip loves music all day and night.  Do you have any releases or albums that you are currently working on? Yes, I'm currently working on a multitude of releases. I have remixes on the way. I also have couple projects I'm doing with J.phlip and Justin Martin, and also my upcoming EP on Dirtybird.

Kazantip first started as a gathering of windsurfers who came together to dance to techno and trance after a windsurfing competition on the Black Sea. Since then it has grown into the republic it is today.  Have you tried windsurfing or surfing in general?  Do you enjoy it? I have never done either but i saw some mad surf dudes riding waves when i was in Hawaii…who knows maybe I'll get lucky and give it a shot whilst I'm there.

Kazantip's political system is called "Dictatorship of Happiness."  Who would you appoint if you were building your own Dictatorship of Happiness? I'd appoint myself as the supreme commander of ultimate happiness and will have a staff of ultra-conservative happiests that consists of Claude Von Stroke, Kill Frenzy, and Justin Martin to help me provide happiness and party time to my people.

Kazantip has over 300 DJs playing this event.  How long will your stay in the Kazantip Republic be and who are you looking forward to seeing play in your downtime? I'll be there for two days and even though there are all those DJs playing, I'll be making sure that I check out all of my crew. The Dirtybird guys are always dropping the best beats. I'll also be playing an official after party with Kill Frenzy and Breach which I think is going to be amazing.. come and check us out.

Kazantip's official color is orange. in order to add color to life.  Does your wardrobe incorporate a lot of orange?  What’s your favorite piece? I love the color orange. Our city's baseball team (SF GIANTS) consists of the color orange. I had a turtle neck sweatshirt that was orange. I dunno what happened to it. I still miss him.

Turning The Party Up With ATAXIA

Detroit's export Ataxia is comprised of duo Ted Krisko and Eric Hanna. Going against the grain in the city that gave birth to techno with the sound of deep house, these two have been forging a new path in the city's nightlife whether it be playing their cultivated music selections at TV Bar or educating Movement Festival crowds with their sound. Welcomed with open arms by the Culprit family in Los Angeles, Ataxia is just about to release their EP "No.6" on Culprit Records on Monday, August 5th. With delightful vocal work done by Cari Golden and Clarian of Footprintz, the EP is a culmination of all their hard work and dreams combined to create these gems. Although you can't get your hands on the release until Monday, they've prepared an exclusive mix for our aural enjoyment. Be prepared to sit back and float away into your own dreams as they show us theirs via melodies, beats, and a few words.

Where did you guys come up with the name Ataxia? There's a medical definition, but we didn't think it stemmed from there… Ted: We were sitting around with a thesaurus, trying out some things, looking for a word that had a great meaning and wasn’t an obvious cliché. Ataxia really was a perfect word, given the aspect of the medical definition that includes “involuntary loss of muscle control”…I pictured people getting loose, catching a buzz and dancing to our music. It made perfect sense then, and does to this day!

Let's talk Detroit for a hot second. A lot of people don't understand this wonderful city with rich musical history and its current underground scene. Many think that by simply attending Movement once a year, they get it. When you're traveling, how do you explain Detroit to people who are unfamiliar in two sentences. Ted: Detroit is a really strange scene to be from, as it's undoubtedly one of the toughest places in the world. To truly understand the city, and gain perspective on why it’s creative output is so high, it’s important to have someone familiar with its infrastructure and its techno heritage show you around in a car on a tour of Detroit if possible!

Eric: Seasick, stretched thin and strung out. We’re still managing to turn the party up.

Do you foresee yourselves moving from Detroit? Is there a place you've both dreamt of living in? Ted: Detroit will always be the place we call our home! Though, there are plenty of places that we could see ourselves relocating to as we continue further down the path of the life of a musician. We have had visions and have spoke of living in London and Berlin, where so many of our friends live and make music. NYC is another place where I am vastly intrigued by. Mexico would be a beautiful place to live in the wintertime…we shall see where the wind carries us throughout this journey!

Do the two of you often travel together? What is the dynamic between you guys? Ted: We travel together for most gigs, though I frequently like to extend my stay in many places with great energy where I have friends. Eric and I joke around, A LOT! Our relationship is based on lots of laughs, and a ton of ball busting, so to speak. Musically, we see eye to eye and trust each other both in the studio and in the DJ booth, so there is much harmony to our partnership!

Eric: Ted brings a lot to the table on the business and seriousness side of things, i.e. Interviews, talking, more talking, and talking. This comes in handy most of the time because, I feel like I’m floating through a room of holes and don't ever want to talk to anyone. Bah, besides Pulse radio of course! Ha.

You've mentioned in an interview with MyBeatfix that you're going to revive your live set up. Tell us what comprised your live set up before? What spurred you to move onto DJ sets? Ted: Our previous setup included an Allen & Heath Xone 4D, Xone 92, various drum machines, an array of synths, midi controllers, and effects boxes, with two computers sequenced together. After Movement 2011, which was our last live PA, we decided to focus on our DJ sets for the time being, as it was becoming so risky gigging locally in Detroit with that much equipment to manage on a gig to gig basis. Car break in’s are common here, and we’ve previously been victims of robbery loading out after a gig, so we wanted to make things simpler and more compact.

Eric: That previous setup was a disaster. This 2014 live rig is going to bring us back to the fundamentals of musicianship. I need to play some bass, and I’m certain Ted would love to play some guitar.

You have a big release on Monday, August 5th with vocalists Clarian and Cari Golden - your No. 6 EP. It's a beautiful release, really well done - do you mind telling us the story behind it? Ted: Our friend Jozif had been playing and charting our music since last year, so I continued sending him stuff that we finished in the studio. He thought that the music was sounding really great for release, and asked us to sketch out an EP idea for him to pitch to Andrei, Culprit’s label manager. At the same time, our other good friends Safeword (the duo of Clint Stewart and Marc Smith) who had been doing a remix for the A1, sent the music to Justin Sloe from Droog.

Both Justin and Andrei enjoyed the music, and with the stellar vocal work from both Clarian and Cari Golden, it really felt like a natural fit all around. Andrei brought an additional remix to the table from Luca C & Brigante, which is receiving much praise! We are extremely pleased with their version of “The No. 6”, our song with Clarian. Additionally, as a digital bonus, we had Dan Wagner from our New Agenda crew in Detroit do a remix of “Love On”, which is our collaboration with Cari Golden. Dan is really talented and we are stoked to have him on our first EP, and very glad to have Culprit be so supportive of new up and coming talent!

Where can we find Ataxia next? Are there any gigs or festivals coming up that you'd like to highlight? Ted: As far as a gig to highlight, we will be playing the Culprit Sessions rooftop pool party at The Standard, in downtown LA next Sunday, August 11th! We really can’t wait to play this, as it’s got the reputation as being the hottest party series in the US. Sharing the bill with friends like Droog, Inxec and Tone of Arc is really proper for Ataxia’s California debut!

The next festival appearance for Ataxia will be at Burning Man! Very honored to be included in the Nexus Stage programming, which will be graced with performances by Richie Hawtin, Dubfire & more…this will be a life changing experience needless to say, and there is so much energy and excitement over this, as it’s way more than just a gig!

The next gig is in Miami this coming weekend at Gavana Garden in the Design District for a Sunday day party, playing a special sundown set on a beautiful outdoor patio!

What frame of mind where you in when you were mixing this lovely exclusive mix for us? Daydreaming.

Tiesto Announces New Deep House Radio Show "Club Life After Hours" Dropping Tale of Us, Finnebassen & More

$

Tiesto has announced that this Sunday, August 4th he will be launching a new radio show on his Sirius XM Club Life Radio channel called "Club Life After Hours." It's a 24-hour show that will delve into the depths of…deep house and house music starting at 5 a.m. Sundays to 5 a.m. Mondays. Various artists will be invited to host the show, but the first one will be hosted by Tiesto himself.

Lo and behold the track listing does not feature trap or commercial EDM tracks, but artists like Finnebassen, Tale of Us remixes of Audiofly, Monkey Safari, and Luomo. Can you believe your eyes? Apparently Tiesto told CODE, "I really like deep and warm vocal house, and this a perfect addition to my Club Life Radio." Getting excited that maybe his sets will change and the festival crowds will be exposed to a different type of music? “It's a great sound to listen to at home, in the car or while having a Sunday afternoon barbecue. It's perfect listening music." Looks like not quite yet. Tiesto adds, "Stylistically, I don't think [house is] ready for my live sets just yet because I like to play a little more energetic and uplifting, but who knows in the future?”

While we think that house music is more than just "listening music" and it's more along the lines that he's not ready for house music in his live sets - not the other way around, we're not going to look the gift horse in the mouth for this great start. Getting radio play on a widely listened to channel like Tiesto's will only help in exposing new crowds to new sounds. Tiesto playing Tale of Us, who would have thought to see the day!

Here's some more of the track list for Sunday:

Destiny's Child, “Say My Name” (Cyril Hahn Remix)
Framewerk, “As If”
Phoenix, “Lisztomania” (Vanilla Bootleg)
Monkey Safari, “Hi Life” (Cheeky Bold Cover)
Hells Kitchen feat. Irina Makosh, “I Close The Door” (Walkboy Remix)

Stefan Biniak, “The Read All About It Bootleg”
Him Self Her, “Gone Too Long”
Fatso, “Empathy”
Jan Blomqvist, “I Don't Think About You”
Daughter, “Youth” (Alle Farben Remix)
Art Of Shades feat. Soukaina, “All Away”
DSF, “Private Thoughts”
Goldroom feat. Chela, “Fifteen” (Rotkraft Remix)

David Guetta Threatens Website With Lawsuit Over Parody Article

Last week the Wunderground website posted another of their hilarious parody articles. This time they took aim at pop star David Guetta, jesting that the DJ has chorophobia (an irrational fear of dancing) and accidentally cued up a self-help CD at one of his gigs. Guetta was suitably unimpressed and rather than seeing the joke for what is was, he interpreted the article as an attack to try an lessen his ranking in this year's DJ Mag Top 100 poll (see his paranoid tweet below).

But Guetta didn't stop there. Instead, he took it up several notches, with his lawyer issuing the website with a first summons and take-down request (read below), claiming that the facts contained in the article were "totally non-existent and a pure lie.” Umm, that's what parody is, David.

So, in rather legendary fashion, Wunderground editor Mikey Maguire has refused to take down the article and responded to the threat from Guetta with a lengthy and hilarious letter, which you can read in full below.

Respect, Mr. Maguire. Our hat goes off to you!

Nicole Moudaber: In the MOOD For Sands Ibiza

$

0

To put it mildly, Nicole Moudaber has been on fire of late. In more colourful terms, the techno DJ and Drumcode signee has ripped the techno world apart, ordering us straight to the dance floor with the most ear catching, dark room techno around, with one of the best stage presences in the business. Once you hear Nicole, your only thought is that you want more. A lot more.

So it makes sense that the Nigerian born, Lebanon raised promoter turned international DJ and producer would kick start her own imprint, MOOD Records, which launched just six short months ago. Though with such a whirlwind tour schedule, and releases by both Nicole and hit makers like Nathan Barato, releasing some of techno’s most played tunes these days, it’s hard to remember a time before there was a Nicole Moudaber, or a MOOD Records for that matter.

We caught up with Nicole just ahead of her monstrous free beach party at Sands Ibiza on Wednesday, August 7, which will feature some of the best names in techno, including Anja Schneider, Carlo Lio, Alan Fitzpatrick, Just Be, Nathan Barato, the queen bee herself, Nicole Moudaber – even the legendary Danny Tenaglia. Did we mention this party is Free?

First off, congratulations on the first 6 months of success for MOOD Records. What have the last six months been like in regards to running your own label? The last six months have been very creative actually. I'm dabbling between house and techno with loads of amazing records coming through, which are totally my vibe. I have been playing loads of them and the reaction nails it for me every time.

Any highlights or big lessons learned? Yeah…tame my excitement. I can't sign everything unfortunately.

What made you decide to throw a free party at Sands here in Ibiza for the celebration? I just wanted to taste promoting again, and have the pleasure of booking the DJs I respect and the DJs whose work I love. It is as simple as that. And because I get to listen to great music that I want to share it with everyone.

You’ve got some amazing talent coming out to support, including the legendary Danny Tenaglia. How did you go about selecting who would be playing alongside you for this special occasion?  They're all involved in MOOD in some way, so it makes sense to invite them. Unfortunately I couldn't have everyone and hopefully can get these people on the next party. Danny is great friend of mine and we have played a lot together worldwide. He will be doing a very special set for us on this occasion, and the party will be live on Ibiza Sonica radio in case you can't join us on the island, then at least you can tune in!

What can we expect to see from MOOD Records over the next 6 months? My release “Give Me Body” featuring my vocals and Anja Schneider on the remix duty is set to drop on August 12. The response on this EP was beyond expectations really. It’s the second release from myself on MOOD. I also have a collaboration with Carl Cox that's set to be a mega bomb, I'm way too excited about this project. I also have bit from various established artists like Carlo Lio & The Junkies, Gary Beck, Alan Fitzpatrick and Guti.

Anthony Middleton: Inside The Beat

Inside The Beat is a new film series on Pulse that delves into the minds of electronic music's contemporary visionaries. This And That Lab founder Davide Squillace kicked off proceedings with our very first edition, now one half of the esteemed Audiofly duo, Anthony Middleton, stars in our sophomore episode.

The production and performance duo of Audiofly was born in 2002 when Middleton met Luca Saporito. Fairly quickly their groovy, melodic and undulating take on house music started to create a huge fan base which saw them releasing on esteemed labels like Get Physical, Renaissance and Moodmusic, before starting their own Supernature imprint. With a seemingly never-ending gig diary that sees regular slots at the likes of Fabric, Warung, Amnesia, the pair are also becoming synonymous with their own Flying Circus parties which have become the highlights of the WMC, Sonar and BPM festivals.

But let's put aside the resume for a minute and get a little deeper with Anthony, as he shares with us his thoughts on spirituality and how it's intrinsically linked to music, what he calls the 'digital media goldrush,' and other personal givings.

Tiesto Promises New Trance Album - But Only if he 'Wins' Top 100 DJ Poll

$

Flying Dutchman Tiesto - the highest earning EDM DJ on the planet - has been the subject of numerous stories and initiatives from weddings to deep house radio shows of late.

Surely, it's all to do with the Top 100 DJ poll rolling around for its annual shake up and it seems the DJ has gone one step further in an attempt to gain the all-important top spot. In exchange for votes (to see him beat arch top 100 rival Armin van Buuren), Tiesto will make a fresh LP of trance smashers - leaving his newly found course of EDM and electro behind him - but under one condition: that he is voted the greatest jock on the planet. Yes, gang, it is true - see for yourself underneath (and the rather upfront comment left by a disgruntled Tiesto fan of bygone days). Was it a joke?

After auto-generating the same post on Twitter, it seems that "No.1 DJ-troll with beef on Twitter, Deadmau5", got involved with his two pennies worth too.

Los Angeles' HARD Summer Festival have confirmed that an unnamed man passed away shortly after suffering from Cardiac Distress on Saturday 3rd August at the festival site.

The man - rumoured to have been taking substances by authorities, but still unconfirmed - was allegedly found alone on the edge of a field before being rushed to hospital, where he passed away shortly afterwards. An official statement from festival owners Live Nation reads:

"During Saturday evening’s event held at Los Angeles State Historic Park, a patron experienced cardiac distress and sadly passed away at the hospital. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

"Our guests’ safety and well being is of paramount importance at every Live Nation event. We have skilled EMT’s, police, and security staff deployed on site to respond to any emergency situation and last night members of this emergency team were with this patron and administering CPR within two minutes of notification. We work closely with local health and safety authorities to plan for emergencies and set the appropriate staffing levels for each event."

Flying Lotus was also unfortunate enough to witness the tragedy before starting his set, saying: "Damn. I saw a guy die before I played my set. Heavy." on his Twitter feed.

Our thoughts go out to the man's family and friends during this difficult time.

Video: Grandma Sue Teller Shows Us How To Do A Mash Up

Who is Sue Teller? Sue Teller is the hippest grandma you'll ever meet. Rocking black nail polish and an appetite for trying new things, Sue Teller is not afraid to try mashing up music on a pair of turntables with some street cred on her show "DO Your Own Adventure." Heck, you might even learn a thing or two from her.

We'd love to point out the awesome product placement of the Mountain Dew can which Sue Teller constantly sips on with a straw, as well as how this is a perfect example of a soft sell campaign in the earlier days of viral videos, just to brush up on your Marketing 101. "DO Your Own Adventure" spins off of Mountain Dew's other marketing slogans, such as "Do the Dew" and "Just Dew It!" The Sue Teller campaign for Mountain Dew was thought up by the company 86 the onions, whose website emanates a 1997 vibe.

The video itself, appears to have been first released in January 2007. According to the book "Leadershift" by Emmanuel Gobillot, Grandma Sue died at the age of 84, after only recording two episodes of her show. Believe it or not, she had over 80,000 fans and when she passed away, cans of Mountain Dew were poured out onto gardens in sympathy, "Pour some Dew out for Sue."

Whether it be rooftops in Dalston, alleyways in Shoreditch or now, a giant-sized yacht in Ibiza (of wedding-class standard of course), the brothers know a thing or two about pulling in top-draw names that slay seriously cool settings. For their latest Ibizan vessel excursion (their 4th to date), they play a set themselves atop the 110 foot yacht (the largest in ibiza), whilst joined by eerie house duo Audiofly, plus a secret special guest signed to Mnus / Items & Things.

It sounds like the most fun one can have on the high Spanish seas. Check out some of the photos from one of last year's boat bashes below - try not to feel too envious now.

Further information and a link to tickets is underneath the flyer for your perusal. Don't delay as these are expected to fly out, fast!
