Love and Light: Liquidsoul added to lineup, with Astrix, Ticon, and Critical Choice

Love and Light is a massive outdoor weekend event taking place at The Mountain Shadows Guest House just outside Cape Town on 20 December. Featuring a line up of the absolute finest in international and local progressive psy-trance DJ’s, including Liquid Soul, Astrix, Ticon and Critical Choice, this installment of Love & Light promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Festivities begin at midday on Saturday, and guests have an opportunity to take in the beautiful mountain views, go for a swim in the dam, enjoy bars and gourmet food stalls, and absorb 12 hours of music.

Liquid Soul

Nicola Capobianco (Switzerland) is a winner of best Beatport artist, best Beatport track and the Dj Awards in Ibiza in psy trance categories, among many others. His label is Mikrokosmos records. Besides solo project Sleek, he also partners Martin Knecht in the duo “Earsugar”. Being behind the best selling albums on Iboga Records as Liquid Soul, “synthetic vibes“, “love in stereo“ and “cocktails“, over 100 releases on top labels and playing worldwide over a decade, made him one of the absolute top names in his genre, constantly sought after all around the globe. Liquid Soul recently released a double CD compilation called “Groove Attack” on Iboga Records, as well as two big remixes on Poul Oakenfold´s Perfecto Flouro label.

Astrix

One of the pioneering psy-trance artists of the millennium, Astrix (aka Avi Shmailov), playing live and spinning his tunes around the world has helped him pave his way to the DJMAG top 100 DJ list and, currently sitting at No. 41, Astrix is one of the few artists in the scene who really makes big waves throughout electronic dance music and gaining universal recognition.

Ticon

With a deep background in the technoscene, Ticon’s unique style walks the thin line between progressive house and trance with crossover excursions on both sides. This gives their music a variation from the floor-filling to the hip-swinging funky, but they always emit the Ticon sound and the message to be happy and losing it to the music.

Critical Choice
Filip Mardberg and Fredrik Gilenholt have been producing electronic music for years under the name Ticon, and Mikael Dahlgaard, under the name of DJ Emok and Phony Orphants. Mikael is also manager of the highly respected label Iboga Records. With their electronic music roots going all the way back to the early 90’s, the guys have helped pioneer the genres within Progressive Psy-Trance and Scandinavian Trance, with many releases over the years on their signed labels; Iboga Records and Digital Structures. Their sound incorporates that big old analogue sound which this trio knows and loves all too well. This foundation is blended with the emotion of the old Goa trance and techno that they grew up with, with a fresh new production incorporating unique musical ideas and live instrumentation and sampling.

Asadinho - Crystal Clear EP

Asadinho feat. Natamiq
Crystal Clear EP
Love & Other

8.0/10

Asadinho is a master at his craft. Traversing the DJ and label game for nearly two decades, the producer and RVS label boss is the latest recruit to join the ranks of UK-based, house label-of-the-moment, Love & Other with a new EP, 'Crystal Clear'.

The EP’s title track lives up to it’s name – a crisply bubbling nine minutes of soft pads and tinkling orchestral synths. It’s a master class in clean and effective deep house production aesthetics. It’s also a track with an underlying moral message (something of a rarity in modern house music), with the lyrics inspired by the widely publicised corruption in Africa’s diamond and mineral mines.

The EP’s B-side sees the inclusion of ‘Haiku’, a bumping, late-night lounge track that first featured on Bill Brewster’s After Dark Nightshift compilation back in July. There’s no doubt that DJ historian and author, Brewster, knows how to pick ‘em. And complete with a sexy, jazz-fusion sax solo, ‘Haiku’ is a testament to Asadinho’s well-honed production style.

Bridging the gap between contemporary house and old school nostalgia, Asadinho has drawn on the full breadth of his varied industry experience to conjure up ‘Crystal Clear’, adding yet another stand out EP to his much-lauded production repertoire.

Joris Voorn - Nobody Knows

Joris Voorn
Nobody Knows
Green

7.5/10

Joris Voorn has been around for long enough to be considered a stalwart of the house and techno scene and his first release back in 2002 now seems very distant. As with any artist, his sound has developed and morphed over the years, from his techno beginnings and flirtations with tech house, now we have arrived at ‘Nobody Knows’ via his own imprint Green.

For some, ‘Nobody Knows’ can now be filed in the ‘long-awaited’ category. Having released his last album, ‘From A Deep Place’, back in 2007, Voorn has been fairly quiet on the production front in the last year or so. Not content to just produce another house and techno album to throw on the seemingly endless pile, this LP sees Voorn veer quite ostensibly away from the dance floor.

Opener, ‘The Monk’, sees simple chords loop and interplay with guitars and synths to create what is essentially an atmospheric and moody ambient track. The following cut, ‘The House’, sees a similar production tack, with the beats largely eschewed for a rich layer of pads and minor key chords. Here Kid A’s vocals cut through and lend a somewhat commercial edge to proceedings, but melody and textured soundscapes are immediately highlighted in the album’s opening salvo.

The 4/4 rhythms do arrive by the album’s third track, as a steady house chug is brought to life by Matthew Dear’s vocals and the percussion gives the track an added sense of motion and urgency. But this certainly isn’t dance floor fare.

Chatting to Joris about the album, he told us about his ambient influences as a youngster, “When I first started listening to electronic music, there was nothing that I liked more than sitting with my headphones on, closing my eyes and listening to these abstract soundscapes” before going on to name-check the likes of Autechre, Aphex Twin and Orbital. The ambient influences on 'Nobody Knows' are much less experimental and complex than Autechre or Aphex Twin, but Voorn’s early explorations of ambient probably have the biggest overriding stamp on the album, with melancholic melodies coursing throughout the LP. ‘Nobody Knows’ sounds like Voorn’s take on elements of ambient and sees him appropriating rich synth soundscapes to different styles – adding vocals and more dance friendly drums to create a body of work that is certainly more accessible to the masses than the niche sounds of artists like Autechre.

‘Sweet Piano’ and ‘MoMo’ see Voorn employing beat-less explorations, whereas tracks such as ‘Fall’ and ‘Left’ feature similar melodic elements, but also introduce propulsive 4/4 beats.

There are elements that nod more strongly to the dance floor – ‘Mugged’ and ‘Ringo’ are certainly not peak-time cuts, but they contain a certain edge and vitality in the percussion which lends itself to more club oriented environments.

What Voorn delivers is a body of work heavily focused on melodic and atmospheric sounds that doesn’t always succeed in being entirely cohesive, but is rich with melody. It’s a welcome attempt to steer clear of the tedium of an album full of dance floor bangers.

Middle Ground
I Don't Get It Feat. Lebo
Soul Candi Records

8/10

Middle Ground’s first big release is a track titled “I Don’t Get It” which features vocals from Lebo Sekhoto. The track is a Soulful, low tempo Deep House track which has been signed to the Soul Candi record label.

A sound draws you into an immediate state of euphoria. This is an upbeat happy summer jam. It’s extremely catchy, with its boarderline tech sound. This track is a great pick-me-upper. Even though the lyrics may take you to an emotional place, the music counteracts it so well that you immediately just want to dance. After having listened to it just, once I had the chorus in my head, thanks to the striking voice that is Lebo. I found myself trying to imitate the sweetness and slight roughness in her voice.

If I don’t hear this track in clubs all around the country this December, I will be very surprised and also very disappointed. A must-have track for that holiday playlist you have been working on, it’s not often we have house tracks that we can find differences in - but I can say, I have yet to hear one such as this. It’s big enough that it doesn’t overshadow what you already know and like. It may be titled ‘I don’t get it’ but I can safely say I do get it and I am amazed. - Bella Pillai.

Middle Ground is an electronic music duo consisting of JonT Schoeman and Cameron Last, residing in Johannesburg, South Africa. As fate would have it, a chance meet in Cape Town in 2010 brought them together The name Middle Ground is the result of Cameron and JonT’s way of working. One member starts a beat, bass, synth, percussion, melody while the other finishes it off. At other times, music is created by the two together from start to finish. No matter how the music is created, it is always the “Middle Ground”. In addition, Middle Ground does not cater to only one specific genre, fan base or demographic. Middle Ground’s main focuses are deep house, deep tech and techno. They and cater for different fans who enjoy house and electronic music.

On top of the music production, Middle Ground is progressively working towards building into a Live act where the first version of this will include the duo DJing with a live vocalist. Live instruments such as keyboards will be used and by the end of 2014 there are plans to include beat pads such as the Native Instruments F1 and Machine. Great ideas from great artists.

Stay tuned for more from these gentlemen.

Josh Wink - Talking To You

Josh Wink
Talking To You
Ovum Recordings

9/10

If there was some kind of “Heavyweight Champion of the World” title for acid house, Ovum Recordings head honcho Josh Wink would surely hold it. For over a decade, the Philadelphia native has made TB-303s, TR-909s and samplers do things no man should be able to make them to, and on his latest release, 'Talking To You', Wink thrusts his trademark effects-driven style into overdrive.

Coming in two flavours, an original and a (relatively speaking) more subdued 'Groove' mix, 'Talking To You' is Wink at his dancefloor-smashing best. The original is based around a simple offbeat acid loop, vocal stab and analogue drum groove, which are run through multiple effects throughout the track’s 9 minute run time and become more and more aggressive as the track progresses. From chopped-up, repetitive stutters to distorted, overdriven tube amp effects, and brain-bending reverb, 'Talking To You' uses plenty of studio trickery to turn a fairly simple premise into a constantly evolving, head-turning dancefloor monster.

The 'Groove' mix retains all the elements from the original, but utilises them in a relatively more restrained way. Instead of totally busting out into complete madness, the 'Groove' mix feels more like controlled chaos, kind of like a chained-up rabid dog. It won’t bite you and give you rabies, but being anywhere near it is still incredibly intense.

DJs who enjoy mucking around with tools in their set will also enjoy the 'Talkapella', which is essentially just the vocal run through various effects processors. A great inclusion for the creative DJs out there.

Tracklist:
1. Talking To You (Original Mix)
2. Talking To You (Groove Mix)
3. Talking To You (TalkApella)

Skrillex And Diplo Have Produced An EDM Track For Justin Bieber

$

Forget his supposed penchant for deep house, Justin Bieber is now heading down the EDM path and has enlisted the talents of Skrillex and Diplo to help.

No doubt upset that his only claim to electronic music fame so far was being told to "fuck off" by Michael Woods and then kicked out of the DJ booth in South Korea, Bieber is now looking to put that embarassing encounter behind him by gaining some EDM-cred via a new track produced by the Jack U duo.

The news surfaced on L.A. radio show J SKEE’s Dash Radio Recap, who claims the track “crosses over a bunch of different formats” and should “catch people off guard.”

While we have more than enough faith in Skrillex and Diplo's production abilities, we're a little worried about what lil' Juzzy is gonna come up with. Based on his track record, the odds aren't exactly in our favour.

Arno:"It’s a three track EP and it's going down very well. Two of those songs we play in the live show. One is more like a crazy breakbeat song with a lot of crazy synths in it called “Right on Track.” The other one is called “Line of Fire.” That’s the more melodic techy trance-y track. It’s rather rare that we have such good feedback on unknown songs. Very often we play unreleased tracks, but it’s very rare that a song like “Line of Fire” has such good feedback."

Josh Wink, Time Warp, and That Deeper Experience.

We're on the door step of Time Warp USA, and there's no one better that we'd like to share some time with than Josh Wink.

Wink has enjoyed a long and extensive career in making those sonic waves we've been blessed with and perhaps it's been that consistent approach to reinventing himself and fuelling that idea of what electronic means that has been his key to success.

From the age of 13 and from his home in Philadelphia, his idea of what's important to the contributions to electronic music characterized that youthfulness we sometimes forget these days. His own label Ovum justifies that image we've just painted in our own minds. It's definitely that kind of restless pursuit and hard work that has laid the foundations for his irrefutable assault on the global scene.

This is going to be one hell of a ride if we've ever been a part of one.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

First up - you've had a busy year all round. Can you give us a brief on what you’ve been doing for the past 12 months? The same lucky thing I've been doing for the past 25 years. Making music, running a great record label, and traveling the world DJing. Along with celebrating 20 years of Ovum recordings and being a father… It’s been busy and awesome!

Travelling overseas for festivals like Time Warp is very different to playing club gigs in Europe, how do you approach the different scenarios? Festival mentality is an important one to understand. Usually the mindset of the festival goer is to simply have a great time – to party and let loose as it's a kind of a concert.

So, people want to be entertained; big build ups, big songs, big sounds, big lights, big sound! They want it big. So for me, there is a balance between a performance that brings happiness to people in this frame of mind and the other side which is educating people with music where I don't feel I have to solely have the crowd pogo dancing and fist pumping.

To me there is more art to taking people on a journey than simply playing big room tracks to make people go crazy. So, this is the balance for me. And yes, for me, a lot of thought goes into it.

Whilst on the topic of festivals, and perhaps the more accessible tip of electronica, the landscape has changed a lot over the past decade, what's your honest opinion on it? Well, these EDM events simply have become more corporate and more of a money oriented concert. Where in the past there was more of a 'rebel/outlaw' kind of attitude -- where permits, insurance and politics weren't the main concerns.

Social media is another big thing that's not only changed electronic music, but life in general. Everyone is so busy checking their phones and taking videos and photos and sharing the experience rather than enjoying it, and that's one reason why Berghain's no photo policy makes sense. What's your take on social media on electronic music? I like to go out and be in the 'moment'. So, yes, it's a distraction. But, it happens in other life aspects besides clubs and festivals. Movies, dates, dinners etc.

It seems that the technology we use is controlling peoples lives. However, it should be where we control the technology we use. I like having the boundaries of not using smart devices when I am in a social setting like a club or festival, so I can fully connect with people rather than the internet!

Your projects over the years have made up the story of your life. Looking back, what do you think has had an impact on how you have progressed as a person? Simply as you stated. We are made up of our experiences. So, I hope to continue to progress by learning from my experiences in the past. Knowledge is key in evolving.

 photo 7014118e-58f1-4fea-8478-c9739bfd851d_zpsb3ea118b.jpg

Some artists tend to get lost in the industry. Do you still keep in contact with close friends who kicked off this adventure with you? I am happy and fortunate to have good friends in my life who I remain in contact with on a regular basis. People who at one time I didn't know them personally, only their music. Artists, who over 20 plus years, still share the common love of music and friendship. It's amazing and I feel blessed!

So when you get a moment to yourself what's the most important thing to remember? Ones needs.

What are your plans moving forward? I still want to do what I do. Making music, releasing music and performing around the world. I want to be inspired and be inspiring. I want to be happy, and create art that creates happiness for others along with continuing my loving, deep relationship with my son!
