We ran a piece on Cape Town’s James Copeland who is PsyTrance DJ and producer showcasing a video of James Copeland’s escapades in France for the Hadra Trance Festival, or more specifically, demonstrating how he completely obliterated the French partygoers with his set - watch video here.
James has a healthy respect for the old-school as we’ve mentioned before, but the fact that he is not only a DJ, but is pushing out his own superior productions as well, the understanding he has when behind the decks adjudicating the stomp is phenomenal.
Nano Records has just recently signed Broken Toy, albeit BT having already released a few numbers under that label, its official that BT has joined the ranks of this industry leading Trance Label. However, being the musician that James is, with his finger on the pulse and always pushing to extend his talents, James on top of all this, gave birth to a project you and I know as Sad Paradise.
Broken Toy is a decade old, or new, whichever you prefer – but over the last few years you’d probably agree that there has been somewhat of a divide in the Psy scene. There is a kind of modern updated progressive Psy sound that is dominating of late which is not exactly Broken Toy. James completely picking up on that, formulated, launched and is gunning forward with this project ‘Sad Paradise’ so not to jump the proverbial ship of BT.
Listen to Sad Paradise Mix (1000 Downloads available)
This week Sad Paradise is approaching its 6 month mark since launch with immaculate timing as this weekend at Earthdance Cape Town, James will be performing both Broken Toy (10pm Saturday Night) and Sad Paradise (closing on Sunday) which is also, “my first party on home soil - literally the SOIL, as I haven’t played it outdoors yet” – James on Sad Paradise. A man of this calibre isn’t spoilt with many ‘firsts’ anymore in music so this coupled with the fact that Sad Paradise has hit 6 months, energy levels will be soaring.
Last week sometime Sad Paradise had reached 1000 recorded fans and being the stellar gent that he is, has made the mix above available for 1000 downloads, well, 999 now – thank you Sad Paradise! The mix previews some of his own upcoming releases focusing on the wide diversity of tempos as well as moods with Sad Paradise, James adds “It’s not a one trick pony project that’s just rinsing out one kinda sound - there is some more traditional uplifting progressive in there , some grindy modern progressive and a few slower techno influenced tracks too.”
Having already released on 3 of the top labels for Progressive Psy, Iboga, Iono and Echoes Records, pulling away from BT for the new sound has definitely proved a very wise and insightful move. Sad Paradise is booked on the international level to play Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Mexico and also Brazil, many more pending.
Follow Sad Paradise closely, it's very exciting times.
