The Blend: Röyksopp

Berge and Brundtland are the duo that we know as Röyksopp hailing out of Norway. Experimenting and exploring the countless avenues that one can find in the world of electronic sound design, the two after a break-up had crossed paths again during the Bergen Wave which is about when Röyksopp was actually formed.

The experimenting and exploration of digital sound’s paid off as the duo solidified their place in the electronica scene with their debut album in 2001 dubbed ‘Melody A.M’ released on the ‘Wall Of Sound’ Record Label.

Official video for Forsaken Cowboy and Genero.tv competition winner, by Matt Phantom.

The band continues to experiment, constantly looking for ‘that’ sound with genres pertaining to electronica including Ambient, House, Synth-Pop and ‘Non-Euro American Sounds’ says the duo. Adding to the maturity of their sounds and the package as a whole, the two are equally as entertaining on stage with their live acts featuring some rather eccentric outfits when they are in concert.

The duo have claimed several musical accolades including a number of hits in their native Norway as well as being nominated for a Grammy Award along the way of their career since their debut back in 98. A plethora of content to chose from with the duo famously known as Royksopp so we're adding in some of our favorites with relevant links for you to explore further - (Official Website Here)

Listen to their cover of Depeche Mode's 'Ice Machine'

The Blend on Pulse is about bringing something slightly left-field of the regular content we push daily by showcasing electronic bands and their very unique sound. We hope you enjoy the sounds of Röyksopp.

Carl Cox Returns to DC-10: In Review

$

Despite holding down a hugely successful & long-term residency at Space, when Carl Cox steps behind the decks to do his thing on another dance floor, music lovers around the world flock to see one of their heroes in a new environment. Having already graced the decks at both Music On & Used+Abused, Coxy once again showed the world another side, flexing skills rarely seen by the big man here on the island, stepping foot in to DC-10’s famous terrace for the only time this season.

Playing early doors, Coxy and his promotional team at The Revolution took over the famous red room, bringing the kind of magic that only they can provide, bringing inflatable swimming pool toys a la Elrow, along with Native American headdresses, sequend caps and pirate wear. Even Carl’s management at Safehouse were getting involved, wearing police hats and tossing balloons into the crowd, creating an atmosphere and vibe that defines what Circoloco at DC-10 is all about! One reveler even made sure Sooty and Sweep were dancing the day away – I always knew they loved techno!

As for Coxy’s set, I can honestly say there are few in the business that can work a room like the master. As we’ve talked about earlier this season, whether or not DJ swapping is a good thing from a promotional or monetary standpoint remains to be seen. But from a fan’s perspective, having the chance to watch the Space legend play a four-hour set, ranging from disco to deep house to straight-up house to booming techno with the amount of grace and passion only someone like Cox can provide is an absolute treat. By the time the sun had gone down, the terrace was in its full, heaving beauty from front to back. Early on, as the sun shown through onto the terrace dance floor, Cox kept the feet moving and hands pumping with tracks like Hot Natured and Ali Love’s ‘Benediction,’ and Mike Dunn’s ‘God Made Me Phunky,’ giving the entire place a ‘pinch myself’ vibe, the booth filling up with a who’s who of electronic music.

Famous for his mic work, Carl Cox let out ‘Oh Yes, Oh Yes!’ and ‘Fantastic! Fantastic!’ to whistles and cheers as I spotted Dan Ghenecia joining Shonky (who earlier played in the main room) on the dance floor near the front of the booth, enjoying the festivities. Tom Flynn’s ‘Do You Like Bass’ got a huge reaction, as did many others, making one wonder what gems Carl Cox has stored in that record collection of his.

In the end I stopped with the mental notes, puffing my cheeks and moving my feet as record after record oozed through DC-10’s perfectly tuned sound system. Coxy signed off to a wild ovation as the queen of DC-10, Tania Vulcano, took to the decks with ease. What happened from then on is all a bit of a blur – I guess you just had to be there to find out. This was the fourth time in two weeks that I had seen the icon of electronic music, and with two weeks to go, I thankfully don’t think it will be the last.

The Revolution continues tonight at Space with Nicole Moudaber, Nic Fanciulli, KiNK (Live) and Circoloco’s own Seth Troxler making his Revolution debut. Oh yes! Don’t you just love September in Ibiza?

America's Best DJ Results Revealed with Kaskade, Diplo & Skrillex in Top Spots

$

The results of America’s Best DJ 2013, presented by Pioneer USA and DJ Times Magazine, have been announced with Kaskade taking the top spot, closely followed by Diplo in second place and Skrillex in third. Every year since 2006 DJ Times nominates 100 DJs based in the United States who fans then vote for between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition, voting booths are set up at select shows and festivals.

The results from this year’s competition do not come as much of a surprise as the top three DJs chosen in the poll have been frequently featured in the news recently. Kaskade just released his ‘Atmosphere’ album and has set off on his tour in support of it. Diplo has been setting world records with his twerk wall, making public service announcements about drug use at music festivals, and collaborating with Skrillex as JACK U.

Last year, Markus Schulz took the top place but was not chosen as a member of the top 50 in 2013. Other notable differences in the list this year is the introduction of trap artists Baauer and RL Grime and the improving standing of underground artists such as Claude VonStroke, Dubfire, Dennis Ferrer, Soul Clap, and Maceo Plex suggesting that the American scene has been evolving.  The ABDJ Closing Party and Awards Ceremony will be held at Marquee Nightclub on October 13th.

Take a look at the following list of the top 50 DJs according to the poll and let us know what you think.

Former Publicist Sues ICP for Sexual Abuses Including "Clear Dildos,""Vagina Tighteners,"& More

It’s been a tough year for the ICP. First the drug bridge gets closed down in the wake of a heroin overdose at their flagship Gathering of the Juggalos festival in Illinois and now the duo faces allegations of sexual abuse from a former employee. One day, Andrea Pelligrini is working hard in the office for ICP as their publicist and attorney, which we would imagine is not an easy job given their record of crazy stunts, and the next she receives a “clear dildo” from Dirty Dan after learning she became single on Facebook. She was fired after reporting the alleged abuse to the head of ICP’s record label Psychopathic Records. Below is the full list of offenses reported in the lawsuit courtesy of TMZ.  Andrea is suing ICP for wrongful termination and is seeking compenasation for injuries including "fright and shock" and "horror, outrage, and indignity."

In 2011, Violent J's girlfriend Michelle Rapp glared at her in a hostile manner. When she complained to the president of the record label, he told her Michelle is "crazy" and might beat her up.

Michelle "Sugar Slam" Rapp:

In 2012, on the way to lunch, Dirty Dan, a Psychopathic Records employee, told Andrea he had a "fat c**k" and that "he'd like to f**k her."

In July 2012, Andrea changed her Facebook status to single and soon after, Dirty Dan presented her with a "clear dildo" in the office and told her that she'd probably need it because she's single.

Later that day, Andrea says Dan gifted two other women in the office with "vagina tighteners."

In August 2012, she was told she couldn't use the private bathrooms at the Gathering of the Juggalos and was forced to share restrooms that were "often full with naked male strangers."

As for the guns, Andrea claims she was once asked to obtain illegal automatic weapons for a photo shoot.

Video Game Store Courts Controversy After Serving Lines Of Fake Cocaine At GTA V Launch

A chain video game store on Australia's Gold Coast is in hot water after offering lines of fake cocaine to its customers during the midnight launch sale of Grand Theft Auto V. In a genius move the staff at EB Games in Southport used sherbert to simulate the cocaine, racking up lines on the store counter.

EB Games has apologised for the incident via a statement:

“Regrettably, one of our EB Games store locations in Queensland set-up an unauthorised display within the store in support of the launch of the Grand Theft Auto V video game. The display included a white powdery substance that appeared to be some form of an illegal drug. We can confirm that the powdery substance was 'sherbet', a type of fizzy candy, and at no point did the store attempt to give any of the fizzy candy away. This was an isolated incident, and we apologise for any offence this may cause.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 has clocked the record as the most expensive video game ever made with a rumoured budget of $265m. The game's soundtrack also features an experimental hip hop show presented by Los Angeles beatsmith Flying Lotus.

Carl Cox Goes Head to Head With Nic Fanciulli and Nicole Moudaber at The Revolution

$

0

I wasn’t quite sure why, but when I left to go to Space just a little bit earlier than normal last night, I had a feeling it might be a wise decision. After walking into the Discoteca and adjusting my eyes several times, I realized the man himself was in fact warming things up – the first unexpected treat of the night.

Like DC-10 the night before, the king of Space was getting the fire stoked with plenty of relaxed, funky house grooves, finishing with Chiapet’s ‘Westworld’ (Skylark Remix), it’s unmistakable rhythm edging its way in to cheers galore before the track’s tantalizing bass line pushed the masses even further, Coxy echoing the tune out to infinity before Troxler took to the decks, beginning with slow and hypnotic beats.

Though his reputation for being one of dance music silliest characters, Troxler was not messing around for his Revolution debut, expertly building up with sexy funk, keeping the packed Discoteca bouncing right along, heading into darker tribal territory, edging the tempo ever higher with spaced-out yet upbeat grooves as Seth danced to the beat with his unmistakable DJ wiggle. By 2:30, Troxler was on full blast, ripping the crowd to shreds with a massive disco house remix of Kelly Charles’ classic anthem ‘You're No Good For Me’ before heading straight into dark, clunky techno before Moudaber, who kicked things off with creepy, murky, rolling techno. While Troxler did his thing in the Discoteca, Spain’s newest techno and tech house darling, Uner, was keeping it right in the sweet spot over in the Main Terrace.

Making huge waves as of late, Uner had us right where he wanted, locked right in synch with jumping house, expertly balancing between hip shaking grooves and laid back rhythms, warming up perfectly. Moving into chunkier territory mid way through his set, Uner slowly began picking up the pace, trickling out minimal melodies track after track before slamming into The Martinez Brothers’ remix of Green Velvet’s ‘Bigger Than Prince,’ blasting the room to bits. From there, Uner got his creep on with one of the season’s hottest tunes, 'Another Earth' by Tale Of Us, getting into the full swing of things, the Spanish jock pumping and jumping as hard as anyone, while funky drum fills brought the beat home.

Up next it was time for Saved Records boss Nic Fanciulli to take stage, but not before Mr. Cox came strutting into the booth, sending the room into a fit. The two traded punches with stripped back, sleazy tech house, throwing out a massive reggae-house tune before Nic tossed in the Joris Voorn edit of his brother’s massive anthem ‘The Tide,’ Carl by his side loving every minute of it, giving his friend massive respect as Nic laid it on thick with build after build, Coxy rejoicing along with the packed room. From there, the duo kept it moving right along with tracks like ‘Let Yourself Go’ by Todd Terry & Simone Vitullo Feat. Vjuan Allure, and the inspirational ‘I Am Somebody’ by Technasia, its twisted rhythms melting faces throughout the room as CO2 blasted everyone back into reality.

Over in the main room, Nicole Moudaber was ripping the pace up with techno so hard it was bulletproof, leaving many club goers shaking their head in disbelief at what monster beats the Queen was throwing down, and the final back-to-back of the night hadn’t even come. After a quick change of shirts, his new tee aptly reading ‘DUES PAID,’ Carl joined Nicole just after 4am, confetti blasting overhead as a sea of smartphones recorded all the action.

The duo kept things rolling along, dark as ever, with huge bangers like ‘Vertigo’ by Roberto Capuano, out on Nicole’s label home, Drumcode. It was big, it was relentless, and not a body in sight wanted it to end. By the time Nicole made her way off stage at around 5:30, the Space Discoteca was in a pure, devastating techno love fest, with no signs of slowing until well past the Ibiza sunrise. One can hardly believe there’s only one more Tuesday to go before Carl gives his final ‘Oh Yes, Oh Yes!’ at The Revolution. I know I won’t miss it.

Grab your tickets to the massive closing fiesta of Carl Cox's The Revolution today as this will be a sell out event!

Quick Fire: Lung

$

Having just turned 21, Welsh born James Ellaway, AKA Lung, has risen in a phoenix-like manner to firmly make his mark on the drum and bass scene in 2013. Following up from his first debut EP 'Why Does Anybody Really Do Anything?', a typically emotive, clinical and fresh offering from Med School, he's just  the followed this up with full-length LP 'Wait Less Suspense' which came out on Monday through the Hospital-affiliated imprint. Shorrn X sat him down for a quick grilling about High Contrast, Soundcloud and playing Hospitality Brixton on the 27th September.

Debuting your whole album 'Wait Less Suspense' on Soundcloud  is a bold move (although we're really liking the sound of it and your radio voice). I'm always really embarrassed listening back to my voice when recorded, even more so when it's a video recording! Always worried I may come across a bit 'Alan Partridge'. But, yeah, it was exactly that! We wanted to get the album heard by as many people as possible - one way to get people listening was to put the album up in it's entirety for streaming. So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive - I couldn't be happier!

Is there a particular theme or concept behind the album? Generally a debut is a pretty personal thing, and of course an epic milestone in the life of any artist. Not a concept as such. It was just really important to me to try and reflect what it is I'm about as accurately and naturally as possible in terms of my music. As it's my debut album, I really wanted to make a mark, for myself mostly - I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it - it's been one of the most challenging but enjoyable things I've ever had the opportunity to do!

You've built up quite a name for yourself in a relatively short amount of time and have received props from all over the industry. Do you feel like you're 'there' yet? No, never! And anyone who thinks that "they've made it" is kidding themselves! We can always learn more and do better, at least that's my opinion! Also people may define "there" in different ways. I'm certainly not interested in being famous or anything like that, frankly I enjoy my own company in a hermit-like state far more than the attention of others. I'm most comfortable on my own writing music. It's almost therapeutic! I'd much rather define "there" in artistic fulfillment, but anyone who's somewhat involved in any form of art knows that such a thing doesn't exist, we'll always want to do something better, and nothing is ever finished!

Are there any past names you feel were an inspiration to you? I want to mention High Contrast but I'm guessing you're probably pretty sick of everybody bringing up that guy just because you live in a somewhat similar area... No, not at all! Linc's a great guy and a lot of his early Hospital releases got me interested in d&b. A personal favourite of mine is 'Return of Forever', I'll never tire of hearing that tune! Alongside Linc, some other names within d&b that really inspired me, especially early on, are Noisia, Bungle, Marky, Random Movement, etc. One of the things I loved about d&b was the difference in sounds across the board, it was refreshing to hear so many different takes on the same core "formula", if you will! I liked it all, the dark and heavy and the melodic and minimal!

I guess you two must be buds now, or did you know each other before? Sorry, won't mention him again. Promise... I met Linc through our mutual friend (Dave Shaw) DroneBoy. They'd been close friends for years and through gaining a residency at Aperture in Cardiff (at the time, DroneBoy's night) we were introduced. He's been really helpful over the years and it was great being able to work with him on a track for his last album. I don't see anywhere near enough of those two as I'd like to!

Networking is always a big part of getting into any scene, did you happen to know a lot of decent people or was it a case of relentless e-mailing people with demos and such? Touching on my previous answer, it took me a long time to start getting my music out there. It was through networking at my local night that I met all of the aforementioned and I realised just how important networking is. I've known plenty of great producers and musicians with so much talent, but unfortunately don't like to put themselves out there. Luck plays a huge role as well, you can't forget that. I've been very lucky. But, at the same time, you have to be prepared to get put down or told 'No', you grow a thicker skin, but all in all it can only benefit you and I'd advise any budding producers out there to choose their best tracks and send them to specific people they really want to work with, otherwise, not only are you wasting the time of others for the sake of it, but you're also wasting your own time.

Any big reveals for the forthcoming year? Not really, at least certainly nothing at a stage to talk about. We do have some plans blooming, though! Best way to keep up to date with all my goings-on is at my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/lungdnb and all will be revealed over time!

Thanks for your time - before you go, where can we catch you live and in effect next? No problem at all, thanks for the questions! I'll be playing at Hospitality at the O2 Academy in Brixton on the 27th September, Hospitality Bristol and Birmingham on the 4th and 5th October, Falmouth on the 10th, Med School's brand new stand-alone night in Brixton on the 11th and Brighton on the 12th!

What it’s like when Everybody Loves Everybody

E.L.E – Everybody Love Everybody stands out amongst other events as it supports a movement where all proceedings are donated to an orphanage called St Janes De Chantal Home which takes care of HIV positive and abandoned children.  The funds that have been raised from the party so far have helped so many of these children, and all the attendees have made this possible. Beats in the Bush is a party with a purpose that brings the love, hope, and light to so many.

We were taken slowly into the magical Friday evening as we explored our playground in the bush and noticed how the night-floor came to life with the extraordinary cluster of colorful umbrella’s that were illuminated over our heads. Ric Norte stirred us into his soulful sexy tunes inviting us into the Techno beats that followed into the dark hours. We gathered to jive under the moonlight, through the rainfall, and the last of us carried on jamming as ‘Good for Us’ (Cam with a K & Hurtmurphy) took us into the morning sunrise from 05h00-07h00.

After a power nap we were awakened to the scent of fresh rain from the night before which filled the air with an earthy aroma on Saturday morning. Many more smiling faces graced the party to enjoy the special treats ELE had to offer, not only visually, but we were also entertained with many games as well as beer pong, which I enjoyed taking part of. The day was glorious and filled with endless surprises.

The music moved onto the beach-floor in the daytime and we settled into the tasty Tech/House melodies under the sunshine in front of the jazzed-up mosaic mirrored bus - decorated by the E.L.E crew so beautifully, where the DJ’s played behind the decks. Justin Miller closed the day-floor with his deep and groovy underground sound. From then on, the night unfolded with Emma X bringing life to the evening floor with her progressive trippy Techno beats. Suffix set followed, capturing our souls and enlightening us through the journey he creates with his well thought out sound which bridges the gap between Techno and Psychedelic Trance.

Delirient hyped-up the dancefloor and captivated the crowd, taking us on a ride into his brilliantly thought out leads breaking into the high-powered energy of his dynamic bass lines and lively drops! The positive energy radiated amongst the crowd as we all let loose and explored the vibrations of the bass-grinding, psychedelic electro styles played by Slax.

A pleasantly hot sunny Sunday brought the party back to the beach with Progressive/Tech House beats dominating the dance floor with a line-up including our very own Jozi DJ’s, Metroticket, Prefix, and all the way from Cape town – Deadbeat FM and Dean Fuel. Party goers were sipping on their refreshing slushies poolside or breaking it down to the last of the banging beats. The music carried on way past the time it was meant to as Deadbeat FM took over the decks once again till sunset! This was such a treat, and the most satisfying way to end off the party.

E.L.E brought the freshest of vibes to such an intimate party. There was something for everyone. They have built a community which I am now proud to be a part of. It is evident how much love, passion, and the utmost attention to every little detail they put in to make this unforgettable experience stand out from all the rest. From the décor, the set-up of the 3 different dance floors - including the soothing beats coming through the campsite on the Reggae floor, the memorable Doctor Seuss quotes on signboards arranged around the bush, and the mini-lounges and hammocks settled in the shade under the trees.

There was a magical element that filled the air at this party. If you missed out on this one, be sure to be a part of the next E.L.E and party for a purpose! Thank you to the organizers and all involved in making this party so special. I feel rejuvenated from such a happy atmosphere and my heart is touched deeply.

The Records That Defined Medlar

Debut albums are, to the most part, a big deal. When it's the debut for both artist and label, however, then you know it's going to be something a little special offered for such a landmark occasion. Medlar and WOLF Music are embarking on such a journey together through forthcoming album 'Sleep'.

A core part of the WOLF family alongside KRL and Greymatter, the UK producer is taking his usual alternative, moody and subdued dancefloor sound to more intricate and introverted territory, by combining his output with the world's of instrumental hip hop & ambient electronica. A musical magpie if we ever did see one, Medlar's rich musical inspirations and sonic palettes are vast - so we asked him to pick and explain the 6 most inspiring, defining records that helped shaped him into the artist he is today. Over to you Ned...

Pixies - Trompe Le Monde

I owe my older sister for introducing me to a lot of music when I was growing up, and this is one of the few bands that I still go back to, and seem as relevant as ever. One of those records where the opening seconds of each track recalls lots of memories. I need to go back to this kind of stuff after listening to lots of music made on computers, it was a toss up between this and Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. People will argue Surfer Rosa is a more important album but this is the Pixies record, and the record which defines that part of my youth that I'm most fond of. I must give my sister her CD back..

Photek - Modus Operandi

I remember buying this not long after discovering jungle and drum and bass and not really knowing what to make of it for a while. So ahead of its time in terms of both style and production. There are so many jungle/drum and bass records I could have included in this list as I spent most of my youth that scene, so it was a tough choice!

TRG - Broken Hearted (Martyn's DCM remix)

Dubstep opened a lot of things up as it showed it was possible to combine elements of disparate scenes and sounds of different eras to make something fresh, which is what is propelling this "house revival" or whatever you want to call it. Dance music was very fragmented at the turn of the century. I have such vivid memories of hearing Kode 9 play this what felt like a year until I heard it again. A masterclass in soulful minimalism! 'For Lost Relatives is my joint-favourite Martyn track, which I often close sets with.

Mr Fingers - Can You Feel It

Perhaps an obvious choice, but I thought about it and it wouldn't feel right leaving it out. It has the balance of emotion, raw sonics and an interesting structure that sum up what I love about the deeper end of house music. For years I thought "maybe I'll get into house one day", and when I finally decided to give it a chance I started with the early Chicago stuff. I almost immediately found this track which totally sold it to me, it was very refreshing. The classic house record, and deservedly so.

Rufus & Chaka Khan - Masterjam

It took me a little while to figure out what I liked and disliked within disco. Within that time I picked up several Rufus/Chaka LPs as they're quite common and pretty cheap. This is my favourite of theirs and one of my favourite albums that I've discovered in recent years. As well as 'Do You Love What You Feel', it has the cover of Quincy Jones''Body Heat' (Quincy produced the album) and the monster 'Any Love'. And that's why it's pretty much always in my record bag!

Tammi Terrell - All I Do

I sampled this off of a BBE compilation to make a hip hop track with a friend, a year or 2 before I found the recording again and used it in 'Terrell', which is the first track I released as Medlar and the start of me working with Wolf Music. At the time I was unaware of the history of Stevie Wonder writing the song as a teenager and Tammi Terrell's tragic death (and how that affected Marvin Gaye). Discovering this after the Wolf 12" went out, combined with the opportunities that have opened up for me since deciding to make house music, and how it's my favourite Motown record, make it a very special record to me, with many layers of appreciation. I really should get a 45 of it!

Medlar releases 'Sleep'on October 7th through Wolf Music.
