Psy City: Nano Records doing the draft

$

The Nano Records family tree branches out far and wide around the globe priding themselves on delivering the freshest most cut-killing Progressive Trance and Psy Trance alike. Right in our backyard there is no shortage of unique stomp demanding artist changing the game here in South Africa and making waves in their respective zones abroad with Nano Records making sure they’re at the forefront of this all.

Four names have been drafted and are to become the newest editions to the Nano family. Adding to the quality list of names already releasing under them they present:

Broken Toy who is the brain child of South African DJ and Producer known as James Copeland who is based in Cape Town at the moment. He’s had a successful career for the last decade in the local Psy scene and has earned the respect of his peers and fans through his creative interpretation of trance and electronic music in general, extending out to the rest of the world.

Next up they’ve managed to pull Mumbai legend, and an authentic Indian Goan Trancer by birth right – Groove Addict. He was lucky enough to be born into the world of the Goan Psytrance culture and with that, was utterly submersed and raised in its beauty. It is possibly this background that has allowed Groove Addict to deliver a set that takes the listener on a journey paved on combining the old school with the more modern psychedelic sounds.

Daniel Bernardo AKA Menog who this year decided to explore the more ‘spaced-out’ and slower elements of Psy Trance by forming the Progressive Trance DJ/Producer alter ego more famously known as Skyfall. Skyfall puts together driving progressive grooves that sports a brilliant balance of cybersonic soundscapes and the emotional connection that humans make to music.

Ilan Shemi & Oshry Ben Simon AKA DJ Osho form the duo hailing out of Israel also being added to the Nano ranks is Symbolic. The duo have been working together since 2011 when their first production seemed to find its place on dancefloors around the world. The kind of Psychedelic Progressive Trance that’s being pumped out by the duo comes packaged in massive basslines, crunchy grooves and mechanic rhythms. Symbolic tends to lend its outfit to the more ‘strictly dancefloor’ type sound – also being welcomed by industry moguls Nano Records.

Here is a short video of Symbolic's last track that they played during their Live Set @ Ozora Festival official.

Julia Govor is a woman of many talents, the USSR born DJ/producer got her start performing in a live show in a small military town and ultimately became the cassette-DJ at the town's nightclub. She eventually moved into Moscow to study film and TV Production and it was during that time that her life began to take off. She became an on-air personality for MillerTV and MTV and interviewed some of the industry's top names like Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, David Guetta and even Iggy Pop. She's signed records to Visionquest and Get Physical and recently relocated to New York City where she's working on building her name as a DJ on this side of the pond.

Pulse Radio knows a good opportunity when we see one so we snatched up Julia and her infectious curiosity and energy to host a new radio program for us entitled "Beyond The Booth" during which Julia will chat with various DJ/Producers about more than just what's in their record bags, tackling what moves them when they're not simply making and playing the music we love. Read on to learn Julia's story, and keep it locked on Pulse Radio as we debut "Pulse Radio Presents Beyond The Booth with Julia Govor" in the weeks to come!

For our third episode of Beyond the Booth, Julia chats with Damian Van de Sande, Clement Zenstov, and Jonathan Illel of French group dOP. The trio are in the midst of their September world tour which has already brought them all over Europe with future dates in Brazil, Israel, Germany, and more.  As they joke around in a hotel room, dOP share some of their tracks with us and jam out to Kris Kross. As the goal of the Beyond the Booth series, Julia asks them questions that go beyond their lives as DJs and producers. The four discuss the trials of being on the road, their temptations, living in Paris, the advantages of having an open toilet plan, and the camaraderie that’s kept them together.

Pop princess Britney Spears announced on her Twitter that she has collaborating with Swedish House Mafia superstar Sebastian Ingrosso on one of her forthcoming singles.  The collaboration doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Britney has been experimenting with the genre since her last album ‘Femme Fatale,’ which was almost entirely rooted in electronic music. “Work Bitch” will be the first single off her eighth album and is set to release on Monday at 6pm EST.

Her post is an image of a lyric sheet for her track “Work Bitch” and although the lyrics were blacked out the songwriters can be clearly seen. Britney has also consulted frequent collaborator will.i.am and Otto Jettman better known as Otto Knows.

Major Lazer Speak Out On EDM Deaths: "We Need To Teach Kids How To Do Drugs"

$

There's been a lot of debate in the media of late over drugs and EDM culture in the United States following the overdose deaths of two punters at New York's Electric Zoo earlier this month, which led to the festival's cancellation on Day 3. Chatting to Rolling Stone over the weekend at the Boston Calling Festival, where 21 drug-related arrests were made, Diplo and Jillionaire of Major Lazer weighed in their opinions on the matter.

"It's going to sound weird, but we need to teach kids how to do drugs, the same way we teach them about drinking responsibly and having safe sex," Jillionaire suggested. "If you're going to go to a festival, drink water for six days before you get there; don't drink no alcohol. If you're going to do a pill and a half, don't do four more and then pass out, overheat, and die of cardiac arrest. Instead of acting like drugs don't exist, acknowledge that drugs will be at a festival and address them."

Agreeing with his pal, Diplo then added: "We're such a conservative culture that we'd rather not talk about the things kids want to do, even though they're going to do them anyway. We'd rather ignore it to solve the problem. In Florida, where I'm from, drugs have been a part of club culture since day one. Kids have always been going to raves in the woods. 20 years ago, Orlando was one of the first places to have rave culture, and we learned how to do drugs. It's going to happen; you can't control it. Persecuting a festival is not going to help it because kids are going to do them regardless. Hell, they'll do them in their houses. That's why crystal meth is a problem in America. Drugs are a big problem in America, because we have money to spend and a culture that wants to be turnt up all the time."

Diplo also took aim at the media, claiming music writers and critics are out of touch, "old" and have nothing better to write about.

"I had a lot of friends who died from Oxycontin and heroin overdoses. No one wrote about those kids. When 6,000 kids party for three days and two kids die, it's a story because the writers don't write about electronic music, as it's flat and boring all the time."

Less than a week after Philadelphia beatsmith Knxwledge cancelled on Outsidein due to a family tragedy, the festival has now been dealt an even bigger blow, with headliner Zomby also pulling out of his visit to Australia.

“We received a call yesterday from Zomby’s management stating that he failed to board his flight to Australia due to unforeseen circumstances, which are still yet to be disclosed,” reads a statement from Outsidein. “We are deeply sorry we are unable to provide you with a more in-depth explanation… We still endeavour to bring Zomby out for his debut Australian tour, and will keep chasing those elusive producers who inspired us to start Astral People in the first place.”

Whilst Zomby's cancellation is very unfortunate, it's unsurprsing, with the Hyperdub artist having a notorious reputation for cancelling or simply not turning up to gigs. In the wake of the circumstances, Outsidein have decided to replace the second all ages OutsideIn show which was planned to go ahead on Sunday September 22nd into two triple-header sideshows, details of which are below.

Sound Pioneer Ray Dolby Dies Age 80

$

Pioneering sound engineer Ray Dolby has lost his battle with acute leukaemia and died at his home in San Francisco at the age of 80. The Oscar-winning scientist pioneered noise-reducing and surround-sound audio technologies, which are fundamental to the music and film industries, through his company 'Dolby' that he created in 1965.

"Ray Dolby founded the company based on a commitment to creating value through innovation and an impassioned belief that if you invested in people and gave them the tools for success, they would create great things," said Kevin Yeaman, president and CEO of Dolby. "Ray's ideals will continue to be a source of inspiration and motivation for us all."

After founding the company in his early 30s, Ray went on to spend decades developing technologies that have become the audio gold standard in recording and movie studios.

He held more than 50 US patents, including most recently for his Atmos system, which sends commands to individual speakers so that sounds - whether rain drops, footsteps or explosions - appear to come from specific spots in a movie theatre.

Last year, his firm sealed a deal to have its name on the venue of the annual Academy Awards, rebranding it as the Dolby Theatre after bankrupt camera company Kodak was forced to end its sponsorship of the Hollywood landmark.

Over the years Dolby and his company won 10 Oscars and 13 Emmy Awards for its groundbreaking achievements.

Mobilee Series: Part 1: Anja Schneider - Do I need to say more?

$

Anja Scneider and Ralf Kollmann started Mobilee Records in 2005 and we are so glad they did. The label serves some delicious, classic house and techno. Celebrating their fifth year in 2010, they marked the milestone with a tour that crossed all six continents. Mobilee throw mental parties including their annual draw card event at Barcelona's Hotel Silken Diagonal during Sonar.

Mobilee's artists include Anja, Schneider, Sebo K, Pan-Pot, Rodriguez Jr., And.Id, ralf Kollmann, Miss Jools, Dan Curtin, Marcin Czubala,Martin Landsky, Ray Okpara, Christian Smith, Slam and their extensive release catalogue includes productions from artists such as Daniel Stefanik, Maya Jane Coles, Re.You, Safeword, Miss Kittin, Vincenzo and many more.

Pulse Radio's writer Hayley Illing catches up with boss lady Anja Schneider on Mobilee and talks about what makes this label one of the best in the world.

How did you guys come together and what was the motivation behind Mobilee? I was sent a lot of music from young artists sending their demos to me as I was a Programme Manager at Fritz Radio in Berlin and subsequently went on to host my own show Dance Under The Blue Moon (still to this day).  It was a natural progression plus I was already in the scene and hooked into the music and produced a track with Sebo K. for PIAS (Play It Again Sam). Word And Sound offered me to start a label one night at Panorama Bar (if memory serves me right) and it was a dream come true. The primary idea was to utilise the stream of new music from people already sending me their stuff for the radio show and my burgeoning 'prominent name'. I thought it was the perfect platform for mobilee's inception. We started to work with Sebo K. and Pan-Pot and the rest they say is history.

Where did the name 'Mobilee' originate from? It was actually from an idea I had in the car. It has a few meanings but its mainly about my idea of business and my character. Perpetual motion. As a separate piece, a 'Perpetuum Mobile' can be defined as a composition where (a large part of) the piece is intended to be repeated an (often not specified) number of times, without the 'motion' of the melody being halted when a repeat begins.

How do you find/sift through new talent for Mobilee? Do you get mailed tons of promos? We get loads yes but first we have to have a connection or know each other or at least they come to us from someone we know. For Ralf and I i.e. mobilee; personality, friendship simpatico and respect is paramount. The rest usually falls into place. But its hard sometimes to choose - we have so many great and talented friends!

You currently represent a range of unbelievably talented artists. Do you believe your live artists like Rodriguez Jnr. and And.ID gain more support/exposure because they are playing live as opposed to just those artists that produce and deejay? Do people know the difference or are they just there for the good tunes? Unfortunately there still seems to be a lot of people who don't know the difference. Its quite shocking. It seems to be because all the energy is put into marketing and promo of the artist but not necessarily the music, which is what it should be about. For me its all about the music first and foremost.

How do you promote/market your artists uniquely compared to other labels? Always be authentic and love what you are doing.  Support your artists and make the best music you can as a label. Marketing for us is just one of the tools to share our wares with like minded souls. Of course we run a business but not at the expense of what we put out. No point marketing things that aren't interesting to us. Waste of time.

What has been one of Mobilee's greatest achievements in the last 8 years? Our logo! And that we are still going strong with our feet firmly on the ground with an undiminished love of music.

Thanks Pulse Radio, see you somewhere on the dance floor. Anja

On the back of her highly acclaimed “Diagonal” EP at the start of summer, Anja Schneider returns with this stunning two track EP. Direct from the Riverside Studios complex in Berlin, Anja Schneider presents us with “Hey” and “Rio”, two differing tracks which stay true to her distinct sound. “Hey” was written as she prepared for the Mobilee rooftop summer parties in Barcelona this year.

As the name suggests, she wanted to make a statement – to get people’s attention and to have a track of her own that no one else had. “For me the track had to leave you with a big smile and an open heart”, says Schneider. “Hey” manages to do just that and more. As a tribute to Chicago legend Ron Hardy, it pulsates with energy and is heavily aimed at the dance floor. Schneider’s passion for early Detroit sounds also shines through towards the end as the subtle acid lead builds. “Rio” on the other hand, presents more melodies yet still manages to maintain energy with its pulsating low-end. “Rio” was inspired by the good times Anja had in Ibiza with family and friends this summer, and more specifically, by the island’s unique sunsets. Enjoy!

Bo  Keeney is a young multi-instrumentalist talent, hailing from California but now living in London. Described as a Musical Polymath, Bo Keeney crafts abnd writes heartfelt, emotionally strained pop tracks that consumes the listener in a mesh of soul, funk, jazz, bass and electronica. after experimenting on his first EP Don't You Worry, mixing the element of field recordings into his tracks, he;'s returned with Versus, featuring Throwing Snow, My Nu Leng and maximalist Bobby tank to give his lyrics an extra dimension. Here' Bo has mixed us our latest Fresh Blood mix and delves deep into his intricate thought processes and songwriting prowess. Read on.

[Read on for tracklisting]

You once said you were not born with a talent for singing. What process did you have to go through to train your voice? I'm neurotic to start with. I'm inclined to analyze and try to control things. So with singing I had to learn to take in information, and form an understanding, then ignore the information and put the song across. And I had to get comfortable with being a freak in public, and not inhibit that.

Is there anyone you base your delivery of vocals on? I wanted to imitate a lot of soul singers like Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding but my voice sits deeper than that. Ray Charles and Glenn Goins influenced me - they had a lower range and used it soulfully.

I based my delivery on just about every great singer I knew of who had their craft down. I've tried to incorporate those sounds into my own style, but I could never imitate anyone convincingly because my voice sits in a strange place. So I've tried more and more to sing the way I speak, just being natural. I don't want my voice to sound like anyone else's.

You strike a good balance between authentic sounds and heavy bass. Is there anyone else out there you think are hitting the same sound? I don't think so. But on this EP - aside from ‘Jump The Gun’, which was me alone - the credit for most of the sound and texture goes to the remixers. They wove my songs into their sounds. I asked them to use as many samples from the original tracks as they could, but the sound of this EP is still dominated by the remixers I chose. I've learned from it by hearing my voice and songs in the context of the sounds they make. It gave me a short cut to hearing what my tracks would sound like if I'd emulated their production styles myself.

You’ve handed a number of artists your tracks to remix. Do you like to work with them in any way or do you just let them do their thing? I only passed on a couple suggestions - keep as much of the lyrics intact as possible, and sample as much of the original tracks as possible. A couple of the mixes had to be shortened so they didn't disrupt the flow of the EP. That aside, each remixer did their own thing.

The thing about this EP is that it's transitional. It's an intermediate step. Up to now, I've always had total control of every aspect of my music. The whole idea of this project was to let people in, and let go a little bit. It was an experiment. I chose four artists whose sounds I liked the best, and suited the tracks the best. I handpicked one for each track, and they needed to have styles that would complement each other. The biggest challenge for me was finding the kind of artists I trusted enough to hand tracks over to, then release myself. That's weird. It's at odds with the way I would normally work, but it's part of a transition. When I make music I like to do the opposite of what I've done before, then find a middle ground that suits me.

http://www.cannonballpr.com/wplivecab/wplivecab/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/bogallery.jpg

You’ve said before that you enjoy working in an isolated environment – does it take a lot of personal reflection to write the sort of tunes you do? At this point, I'm done with working in isolation. I did that for a long time, but the future for me is to collaborate. I'm more able to be my own musician when I'm not trying to handle every role. As far as writing the sort of tunes I do - apart from ‘Jump The Gun’, I personally couldn't call this an EP of my tunes. It wouldn't be fair on the original songs, or the artists who remixed them, because the songs changed a lot in the mix. The material I'm working on now is different from those original songs too. It'll probably sit somewhere between the remixes and the songs that were remixed, with the style I've been developing ever since I started making music.

The EP project was an open collaboration, it took me and my music out of isolation, I learned from it, and some great sounding tracks came out of it. That's the best thing that could have happened at this point. With the next batch, yeah there'll be some personal reflection, and I've created the blueprints in isolation, but there'll a lot more looking outwards than before. It'll be a much more collaborative process.

Is there any particular story you try to tell through your EPs? No. But I guess they tell a story about the past couple years for me musically. The whole lead-up to those couple years has been left out - I want to tell some of that with what I release next: where my music has come from, and what it's now led to. Neither of those two things have been exposed on the two EPs.

That's what the 'Versus' cover is about. It's a before and after photo. The songs have been roughed up and bruised and stitched onto new sounds, and you can't hear what's behind the curtain. The first EP and this 'Versus' EP have just been an introduction really, a way in. It's like a movie where it opens a few years into the story, and then you're led up to that point, and then past that point.

What process do you go through when writing your vocals? Do you have an idea in your mind first or is a little more spontaneous than that? It's hard to explain because the way I put songs together right now is very removed from the current EP. The tracks that were remixed for this EP were originally put together as songs, not as vocals. The vocal was just another ingredient in the arrangement. I put the arrangements together extremely meticulously. Almost all of the original small ideas, melodies and things came spontaneously, but then weaving them together into songs, and fleshing them out and sculpting them into tracks, was the hard part.

At this point, though, the music I'm making is minimalist, and I've only been working on the spontaneous end. I make blocks of audio, sections of songs, with just vocals and a chord progression. And I make licks that link in with those. All of the blocks are linked, and with the right collaborator I'll turn those blocks of audio into tracks that make sense./

If you were to categorise your music where would you place it? You clearly don’t want to be pigeonholed to one genre. I don't think it's ready to be categorized, because it hasn't arrived yet. It's up in the air. The first EP was eclectic - 'Don’t You Worry' had mariachi, drum and bass, vintage rock and electro. The other songs had bits of funk and r&b too. Bobby Tank, My Nu Leng, SpectraSoul and Throwing snow contributed their sounds to this new EP. I could label each of their sounds but I'd probably be vague or off the mark. My music is still on its way. Once it's arrived and gone, someone might put a label on it and that will be that. Right now it's not stapled down.

Are there any production techniques you use that are unorthodox at all? To be fair I think this whole EP production process was unorthodox. I recorded ten tracks piece by piece. I created arrangements for months; I even sat in with the mixer for three weeks while the tracks were mixed. Then I released one of those tracks with a couple demos, on my first EP in 2012, and on this EP I'm releasing another track, which I remixed myself, and four of the remaining nine, remixed by other people. And the original tracks are coming out afterwards. It's fucked up really but there you go.

You’ve done a Fresh Blood mix for us, what styles and sounds have you included, what can we expect? It's all new music, this year or end of last. Most of it I guess you'd call electronic. All the tracks are full of chords and melodies. There's one track in there that doesn't fit the electronic mould, but I couldn't not put it in – ‘Ode To Viceroy’ by Mac De Marco.

What are your plans/ expectations for the rest of 2013 and where would you hope to be by next year? I'd like to finish the material I'm working on and turn it into an album and release it. I want to put the unreleased material out, possibly across a few EPs. So as long as nothing gets in the way, I should have at least a couple albums' worth of music coming out within a year from now.

I'm gigging a lot too, so that'll play a big part. The live thing has gotten stripped down and really natural. I've got two guys I'm working with on it that are amazing. We'll be gigging and touring a lot this year. But mostly, I'd just like to arrive as an artist and a writer. All the material is there; I've got a lot of music in my back pocket. I just want to find the right balance and create something new that makes people excited. And then I want to open up the vault and have the rest of the music heard. In the meantime, I want this EP to go down well. There are some amazing artists on board so I know it should be up a lot of people's street. Hopefully some people will put it on repeat, which would be amazing.
