Catapulted into the limelight during the summer of 2005 via a collaborative project with Italy’s most sought after events, the DocShow, the Neverdogs were suddenly on the international radar. Relocating to Ibiza the next summer, they began first of many residencies and regular appearances at several Ibiza institutions including Privilege, Space, Zoo Project & Underground.
These days, the Italian techno duo split their time between London and Ibiza. And as residents at Marco Carola’s massively popular Music On over the last few years, Tommy Paone and Marco De Gregorio have firmly cemented their status as some of the island’s most popular DJs. We sat down with Tommy and Marco just after their set at Music On in Amnesia when Carl Cox was the special guest to chat about what it’s like to be a part of such a massive and special event, their new label, and their new Ibiza studio.
So you guys just finished up your set in the main room. How was it? Marco: It was great! Another really amazing night. I love Amnesia and playing for Music On. The system in the booth is amazing, I know the music sounds great in the club, but the sound inside the DJ booth is just incredible. It makes playing there even more enjoyable.
How’s the season been so far? M: The reason is going very well so far. We’ve had the gigs with Music On, a few private events around the island and a many gigs in other countries. We’ve been working very hard in the studio on our new material. We are actually building a studio here in Ibiza and we’re also working to create our record label called Artists and Crew. We are in the process of getting new producers to come on board with us at the moment.
Do you guys live here full time? M: No, just for around six or seven months in the summer. Now that we’ll have the studio we will fly back sometimes during the winter, but we are normally based in London throughout the winter.
Why build a studio here? Tommy: It’s more comfortable here than in London, you know? M: It’s very difficult in London to have a big place where you can make lots of noise and be comfortable. And I’m sure there’s more inspiration here. M: Well not necessarily, London is so work, work, work, and here its more relaxed, so it’s a good balance.
What does it mean to you guys to play one of the biggest nights of the season with Carl Cox at Music On? M: When I saw Carl Cox was on the line-up, it was a big surprise for me. It's also a privilege to play for the same event as him, as in Ibiza he hardly plays anywhere else apart from his own nights..
T: It’s a very big thing and a great experience for both of us.
M: Also played back to back with Marco, so was massive it’s massive, very unique. We really appreciate it a lot.
And it’s recently been announced that you guys are playing the closing party. T: Yes we are, I’m sure it going to be another great night.
M: We were only told just two or three days ago. I was sleeping when I got the message . I went to wake him up in his room and said ‘Tommy, we are going to play El Cierre, the closing party.’ And he said ‘okay, okay,’ but wasn’t realizing! I think he was still half asleep!\
T: We had been playing the night before…
M: Then all of the sudden he was like, ‘wait, what are you talking about?’ (Laughs) We are so happy to be a part of it.
What’s the news on your new record label? T: We’re going to open our record label in 2014 and call it Artists and Crew. Techno and deep house is what we will be producing.
M: But in the future we want to do showcases and parties. We want to do both vinyl and digital releases. Right now we are researching artists and collecting music, whilst looking for other people to join our family. It’s the right time for us now.
I would say so.
Be sure to catch the Neverdogs at tomorrow’s Music On, along with Marco Carola, Stacey Pullen, and Joseph Capriati.
