Loco Dice Shakes Up Carl Cox's Revolution at Space

$

Week after week, Coxy is the main draw when it comes to getting numbers through the doors of Space Ibiza, as Tuesday's Revolution party reguarly proves. But this Tuesday we saw Carl take a step away from the night. Whether it was planned from the beginning or a scheduling conflict noticed later in the season, there was no doubt that when Coxy's away, the team still knows every trick in the book to draw a massive crowd.

Loco Dice and Carl Craig were both set to headline the night. Loco on the covered terrace for the first time ever, and everyone else’s favorite Carl taking over the main room from 2-4am, accompanied by Nina Kraviz and Ben Sims in the main room as well as Anthea and Benny Rodrigues on the terrace. Nina Kraviz kicked things off in the main room at midnight, giving us a dark, hard techno set that was a great warm-up, perfectly segueing into what would be Carl Craig’s techno filled, heavy hitting showcase.

There is no one that can truly fill Carl Cox’s shoes, but if anyone did a damn good job of doing just that this Tuesday it was Carl Craig. Coming straight out with hard hitting techno tunes, the energy in the room was immeasurable. Hands up in the air right where they should be, people dancing from front to back. Whether in a group or alone it was impossible not to move along to the beat. Techno can sometimes take its toll on you in the final hours if not properly executed, but Carl Craig’s years of mastering the technique shined through on this evening. Without every really needing to slow down or pull back he pushed straight through for 2 hours and absolutely hammered the adoring crowd. In true Coxy fashion Inner City’s ‘Good Life’ was dropped at the tail end of his set and to a roaring crowd. The King may have been off that night but Carl Craig definitely kept the spirit of what a Tuesday with Carl Cox is in the main room is all about.

As Carl Craig kept the main room bouncing we headed over to the terrace right as Benny Rodrigues was coming off a funky, soulful like set that had the crowd nicely warmed up for what would be a deep journey through house over the next few hours with Anthea. She took to the terrace and immediately hit everyone in the face with a deep and well curated set of tunes that kept you guessing. Just when you thought you had figured it out, an eerie sound or sample would arise changing the entire dynamic of the room once again. She carried on, churning up old familiar samples paired with dark ominous house tunes.

Those that needed a break could take a step out onto the Sunset Terrace where DJ Callum and George the Sax Man could be seen laying out funky soul driven tunes well into the evening. A nice change of pace to re-charge your batteries, grab a drink, a smoke, or a conversation, and then head back to your respective spot on the dance floor. As the clock approached 3:30 the crowd could be easily seen bolting around the club to find an entrance into the already packed terrace so they could secure their spot for the main event of the evening: Loco Dice on the covered terrace for the first time ever. Loco took stage to a mass of cheers, yelling clapping and more, as girls were immediately hoisted on to the shoulders of the willing to get a better look at the man himself.

Loco kicked it off majorly and without delay the crowd responded, the C02 cannons filling the room. We were off for what would be the final few hours on the terrace with a legend in the making. Constant builds had everyone jumping, clapping, and of course, dancing, all the while throwing there hands in the air. Laying out thick techno to the masses it is safe to say not only is Loco Dice adored by his fans, but is on track to be one of the biggest in the game. The terrace took a beating, and it’s safe to say with the incredible numbers pushed through the terrace doors this Tuesday night, he has a firm grasp on what Ibiza needs at the moment.

Make sure to pick up your tickets to next week's Revolution with Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Umek, Fatboy Slim, Guy J, Charlie Hedges!

Space Ibiza shall be branching out and opening a new club in Moscow, Russia, later this year.

In a move that echoes a similar moves by Sankeys and Pacha, Space Moscow is the latest to follow on in their expanding chain which already holds Egypt, Brazil and further Spanish cities in its growing brand. Further clubs are set to open in Dubai and New York, with NYC's branch reported to be a three level club in the heart of Manhattan that holds 3500 people at the ITC.

Meanwhile, the Promote Diversity campaign is gaining momentum across the world's coolest clubs, with hotspots such as Berghain, Output and Harry Klein putting on nights in protest of Russia's discriminative laws.

The news comes as a number of high-profile clubs—including Berlin's Berghain/Panorama Bar, Output in New York and Paris's Rex Club—revealed plans to host Protest Diversity parties in opposition to Russia's anti-gay laws and propaganda. Is this moved by Space a brave one?

Roan AKA RudeOne got cracking at an early age with his collection, or more specifically his addiction with Jungle and D&B records that has since led him to be the well-respected DJ he is today. Being the co-founder along with Hip Hop DJ – CutKeyLow, their brand dubbed Science Frikshun Movement now plays an instrumental role in the growth of our rapidly expanding D&B scene in South Africa.

RudeOne has worked with the Knowledge Mag crew based in the UK where he was invited to play at their monthly event in Brick Lane dropping his vast and unique blend of Bass bombs which ultimately led his talents to join forces with South African Reflex Crew.

A familiar name in the world of Bass in your face, D&B party frequenters would be well aware of the weekly D&B night in Jozi Town – Addictshun that RudeOne kicked off with formidable success.  This tied the knot between himself and DJ Hyphen for what we now know as the biggest D&B night in Cape Town dubbed Pressure hosting local acts that are now claiming respect around the globe.

RudeOne’s history has been instrumental in the style of set that he plays, a soaked set that keeps the crowds packed in and banging on the floor with massive drops being flung out from behind the decks coupled with a quick mixing style. ‘The Rudeness’ – One of Africa’s finest indeed.

Something to look forward to is forthcoming event Earthdance Cape Town who is super amped to have the biggest D&B Crew involved - Science Frikshun - Drum & Bass presents RudeOne, Mr Green and BenSon on the Ignition Stage there this year - Prepare yourself to be owned!

Listen below to the exclusive mix this rude boy has conjured up for us. Respektah!

Fresh Blood: Bo Keeney

You once said you were not born with a talent for singing. What process did you have to go through to train your voice? I'm neurotic to start with. I'm inclined to analyze and try to control things. So with singing I had to learn to take in information, and form an understanding, then ignore the information and put the song across. And I had to get comfortable with being a freak in public, and not inhibit that.

Is there anyone you base your delivery of vocals on? I wanted to imitate a lot of soul singers like Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding but my voice sits deeper than that. Ray Charles and Glenn Goins influenced me - they had a lower range and used it soulfully.

I based my delivery on just about every great singer I knew of who had their craft down. I've tried to incorporate those sounds into my own style, but I could never imitate anyone convincingly because my voice sits in a strange place. So I've tried more and more to sing the way I speak, just being natural. I don't want my voice to sound like anyone else's.

You strike a good balance between authentic sounds and heavy bass. Is there anyone else out there you think are hitting the same sound? I don't think so. But on this EP - aside from ‘Jump The Gun’, which was me alone - the credit for most of the sound and texture goes to the remixers. They wove my songs into their sounds. I asked them to use as many samples from the original tracks as they could, but the sound of this EP is still dominated by the remixers I chose. I've learned from it by hearing my voice and songs in the context of the sounds they make. It gave me a short cut to hearing what my tracks would sound like if I'd emulated their production styles myself.

You’ve handed a number of artists your tracks to remix. Do you like to work with them in any way or do you just let them do their thing? I only passed on a couple suggestions - keep as much of the lyrics intact as possible, and sample as much of the original tracks as possible. A couple of the mixes had to be shortened so they didn't disrupt the flow of the EP. That aside, each remixer did their own thing.

The thing about this EP is that it's transitional. It's an intermediate step. Up to now, I've always had total control of every aspect of my music. The whole idea of this project was to let people in, and let go a little bit. It was an experiment. I chose four artists whose sounds I liked the best, and suited the tracks the best. I handpicked one for each track, and they needed to have styles that would complement each other. The biggest challenge for me was finding the kind of artists I trusted enough to hand tracks over to, then release myself. That's weird. It's at odds with the way I would normally work, but it's part of a transition. When I make music I like to do the opposite of what I've done before, then find a middle ground that suits me.

http://www.cannonballpr.com/wplivecab/wplivecab/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/bogallery.jpg

You’ve said before that you enjoy working in an isolated environment – does it take a lot of personal reflection to write the sort of tunes you do? At this point, I'm done with working in isolation. I did that for a long time, but the future for me is to collaborate. I'm more able to be my own musician when I'm not trying to handle every role.

As far as writing the sort of tunes I do - apart from ‘Jump The Gun’, I personally couldn't call this an EP of my tunes. It wouldn't be fair on the original songs, or the artists who remixed them, because the songs changed a lot in the mix. The material I'm working on now is different from those original songs too. It'll probably sit somewhere between the remixes and the songs that were remixed, with the style I've been developing ever since I started making music.

The EP project was an open collaboration, it took me and my music out of isolation, I learned from it, and some great sounding tracks came out of it. That's the best thing that could have happened at this point. With the next batch, yeah there'll be some personal reflection, and I've created the blueprints in isolation, but there'll a lot more looking outwards than before. It'll be a much more collaborative process.

Is there any particular story you try to tell through your EPs? No. But I guess they tell a story about the past couple years for me musically. The whole lead-up to those couple years has been left out - I want to tell some of that with what I release next: where my music has come from, and what it's now led to. Neither of those two things have been exposed on the two EPs.

That's what the 'Versus' cover is about. It's a before and after photo. The songs have been roughed up and bruised and stitched onto new sounds, and you can't hear what's behind the curtain. The first EP and this 'Versus' EP have just been an introduction really, a way in. It's like a movie where it opens a few years into the story, and then you're led up to that point, and then past that point.

What process do you go through when writing your vocals? Do you have an idea in your mind first or is a little more spontaneous than that? It's hard to explain because the way I put songs together right now is very removed from the current EP. The tracks that were remixed for this EP were originally put together as songs, not as vocals. The vocal was just another ingredient in the arrangement. I put the arrangements together extremely meticulously. Almost all of the original small ideas, melodies and things came spontaneously, but then weaving them together into songs, and fleshing them out and sculpting them into tracks, was the hard part.

At this point, though, the music I'm making is minimalist, and I've only been working on the spontaneous end. I make blocks of audio, sections of songs, with just vocals and a chord progression. And I make licks that link in with those. All of the blocks are linked, and with the right collaborator I'll turn those blocks of audio into tracks that make sense.

If you were to categorise your music where would you place it? You clearly don’t want to be pigeonholed to one genre. I don't think it's ready to be categorized, because it hasn't arrived yet. It's up in the air. The first EP was eclectic - 'Don’t You Worry' had mariachi, drum and bass, vintage rock and electro. The other songs had bits of funk and r&b too. Bobby Tank, My Nu Leng, SpectraSoul and Throwing snow contributed their sounds to this new EP. I could label each of their sounds but I'd probably be vague or off the mark. My music is still on its way. Once it's arrived and gone, someone might put a label on it and that will be that. Right now it's not stapled down.

Are there any production techniques you use that are unorthodox at all? To be fair I think this whole EP production process was unorthodox.

I recorded ten tracks piece by piece. I created arrangements for months; I even sat in with the mixer for three weeks while the tracks were mixed. Then I released one of those tracks with a couple demos, on my first EP in 2012, and on this EP I'm releasing another track, which I remixed myself, and four of the remaining nine, remixed by other people. And the original tracks are coming out afterwards.

It's fucked up really but there you go.

You’ve done a Fresh Blood mix for us, what styles and sounds have you included, what can we expect? It's all new music, this year or end of last. Most of it I guess you'd call electronic. All the tracks are full of chords and melodies. There's one track in there that doesn't fit the electronic mould, but I couldn't not put it in – ‘Ode To Viceroy’ by Mac De Marco.

What are your plans/ expectations for the rest of 2013 and where would you hope to be by next year? I'd like to finish the material I'm working on and turn it into an album and release it. I want to put the unreleased material out, possibly across a few EPs. So as long as nothing gets in the way, I should have at least a couple albums' worth of music coming out within a year from now.

I'm gigging a lot too, so that'll play a big part. The live thing has gotten stripped down and really natural. I've got two guys I'm working with on it that are amazing. We'll be gigging and touring a lot this year. But mostly, I'd just like to arrive as an artist and a writer. All the material is there; I've got a lot of music in my back pocket. I just want to find the right balance and create something new that makes people excited. And then I want to open up the vault and have the rest of the music heard. In the meantime, I want this EP to go down well. There are some amazing artists on board so I know it should be up a lot of people's street. Hopefully some people will put it on repeat, which would be amazing.

Gear Watch: Samsung Reveals Galaxy Gear Smartwatch

$

Yesterday in Berlin, Samsung revealed its highly anticipated Galaxy Gear smartwatch.  Along with Apple, Samsung has already proven itself as a key player in the smartphone market with rumors about an accompanying watch in the works. The introduction of Samsung’s watch will undoubtedly spur the development of competitors including Apple’s rumored iWatch. The Galaxy Gear watch acts as an extension of your smartphone or tablet and provides several additional capabilities and features.

The watch is a way for users to read texts, notifications, emails, and news stories the exact moment they are received instead of having to fumble for their phones in their pockets or bags. The watch and phone are heavily integrated and synched so that anything displayed on the watch is automatically brought up on the screen of the phone as well.

The features don’t stop there, however. The watch also includes a 1.9-megapixel camera, which allows you to do much more than simply take photos. The Galaxy Gear watch will even translate languages for you if you take a picture of foreign text.  The built-in microphone allows the user to draft emails and texts, set alarms, add calendar entries, and much more, using voice commands. Instead of using a Bluetooth device and looking like you’re talking to yourself, you can talk into your wrist. But is that really any better?

The watch contains an accelerometer and gyroscope to record motion and exercise. Sound like using all these features will quickly drain the battery? Samsung claims that a single charge of the battery will last over 25 hours.

A Gear app store will be available for users to download additional programs that expand the uses of their smartwatch. The watch will be available in October and will start at $299. It will be available in the following colors: “Jet Black,” “Mocha Gray,” “Wild Orange,” “Oatmeal Beige,” “Rose Gold,” and “Lime Green.”

From Ibiza to New York with DJ W!LD

Although he has only broken into the international spotlight in recent years, French DJ W!LD has been a hero of the underground scene in France for much longer.  In the last few years alone, DJ W!LD has become a resident at the legendary Ciroloco at DC10 Ibiza and has made his way onto the Cocoon roster.  He has a long history with the city of New York as he played all over the city in the 90s including a memorable set at Twilo and will touch down again this weekend.  We sat down with DJ W!LD ahead of his appearance at the Parisian Ball on Saturday, September 7th on Governor's Island to discuss being a DJ in 90s Paris, what he likes to do when he visits New York, how he spends his free time, and what he's currently working on in the studio.

Be sure to get your tickets to the Parisian Ball on Pulse Radio!

Your sound has been described as deep, dark, soulful, and sexy. How would you describe your music in your own words? It’s difficult to define as my influences come from everywhere but I would say sexy and powerful but it depends on my mood and feelings.

Has your style evolved over time? What are some of your musical influences that we might not already know about? Yes, and my style will continue to evolve! As for musical influences, I’d say hip hop and disco but you know that already. Jazz, soul, trip-hop…

You are originally from Dijon. What was the scene like there? At the time it was huge. We had the best French club for many years called l’Enfer where Laurent Garnier was a resident and they invited all the best techno acts from Detroit and Chicago. That’s when it became clear that I wanted to start mixing.

But then you moved to Paris. Tell us a little bit about the underground electronic music scene there in the 90s. What eventually prompted you to focus internationally instead? In the 90s the scene was good. There were many parties where I was a resident such as "Le Palace," a huge club which had been famous for almost 30 years. But as the French saying goes, “no one is a prophet in his own country.” French people don't have this mentality to push and support their own artists, only when they’re starting to become famous. But in the end, it was great to experience other cultures and types of music.

What are you most looking forward to about returning to New York for the Parisian Fashion Ball? Besides playing, what else do you like to do in New York when you visit? I’m looking forward to a big party with elegant music and nice people. I hope to see my burner friends and get the vibe I’m used to from the 90s in New York when I played for my first time at Twilo. Besides that, I love to play street basketball in New York. Also shopping for sure!

Can you tell us a little bit about your Circoloco residency at DC10 Ibiza? What have been some of the highlights this season so far? It was an amazing season, super packed! For my part I’ve been really happy especially when I get good reactions on the dance floor. It’s the best compliment ever to see people going crazy! Recently, I’ve been in more of a techno mood so I went through my vinyl collection to play some techno shit at Circoloco and it worked perfectly.

When you’re not touring or producing, what can we find you doing in your free time? Painting, sports (basketball, tennis, running), cooking, sex, smoking big joints.

What else have you been working on? Any big plans for the rest of the year? I have many new productions coming on w, 2020Vision, Robsoul, and Rekids. Two albums are almost finished, one really motherfucking sexy and mellow and the other trip-hop, jungle, and hip-hop.

Mexico’s biggest dance festival will be back in January! The BPM Festival will run in Playa Del Carmen from Friday, January 3rd to Sunday, January 5th and feature several A-list artists. Last year alone, the festival brought Art Department, Cassy, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, and many more to the beautiful beaches of Mexico. Although the lineup for the 2014 edition of the festival has not yet been released, we are confident that the festival will draw the same high caliber of talent. The BPM Festival is the perfect winter getaway for those of us lucky enough to spend ten days soaking in the sun and listening to some of our favorite DJs. The festival has released a teaser video getting us even more excited for the seventh edition in January.

Super Early Bird Ten-Day VIP Tickets will go on sale on Friday, September 6th at 9am EST. As always, our friends at the Techno Tourist are on hand to take care of all your travel arrangements.

Pulse Radio Pit Stop: andhim

andhim, the self-described "new boys in town" have made waves with their signature sound, a new genre for which they have coined the name "super house."  anhim started when Tobias and Simon, two friends with impressive musical backrounds came up with the idea after a tense competitive moment against each other at a Bavarian sausage eating competition.  The rest is history.  Hailing from Cologne, Germany, andhim's ever evolving sound has brought the duo all around the world from Germany to Ibiza to the United States.  We had a chance to catch up with the guys just as they are embarking on their US tour including a stop in New York at the TBA Brooklyn and Bespoke Musik boat party on Saturday, September 7th to discuss some of their summer tour highlights, why they love playing at Bespoke parties, and their thoughts on Miley Cyrus.

Be sure to get your tickets to the New York event on Pulse Radio!

You’re backstage at the VMAs and no one’s looking. Which one of you takes down Miley first?
We would team up for that and do a Spike Tombstone with her. By the way, is she trying to compete with Gene Simmons? What's up with her tongue? Is she a dog?

Bespoke Musik was the first promoter to bring you to New York and you have played for them several times since. What are your favorite aspects about their parties? Well, we like the fact that they've booked us three times so far. But seriously, Bespoke is awesome. We love the idea behind their parties and bookings. It is and was never about making money. Bespoke really wants to do something for the people and the scene, which is why they brought us three times so far.

Your Bespoke Musik podcast has only been up for four days and has already generated over 2,100 plays. Can you tell us a little about what went into this mix? What went in all of our work: Jizz, tears (from laughing) and a lot of beer.

You recently headlined Summer Session with Zombie Nation in Germany. What was that experience like and how did it feel to be listed above an artist best known for a hard trance anthem that's generated almost 23 million hits on YouTube? His sound has changed greatly in the time since its 1999 release, no? We actually didn't see him perform since we had another show before. But it is great to have the chance to play with many different artists. We met Woodkid, Alt–J and The Knife on our summer tour this year. It's interesting and inspiring to see all those artists performing.

It seems like you had a pretty great tour in July. What were some of your favorite parties that month? Not only in July. The whole year was awesome so far. But we had the chance to play at the Montreaux Jazz Festival which is the coolest music festival we've ever done. From David Bowie to Prince there are so many great artists that it was just an honour to be part of it. We also had our Ibiza debut this July with the Get Physical crew.

Fuse Ibiza Does It Again: Fuse In Review

Entering September, the last full month of the infamous Ibiza season, there’s a buzz in the air. The weight of August has left, and the excitement and anticipation for the beginning of the closing parties is now truly palpable, giving everyone a renewed bounce in their step, including the masters of deep tech, Fuse and company.

Rossko, Fuse DJ resident of two years and producer for the Fuse label, has long been making his mark in the underground scene. Finding his place in the afterhours arena. His direction is fitting for Fuse, developing organically with cutting edge sounds, blending well with the main man Enzo Siragusa and his other resident DJs. Entering Sankeys at 1am, Rossko pulled the crowds early, filling the red and black Sankeys basement with an excited audience who were already raring to go. Starting smoothly, his sounds have a minimal build with spacey effects, creating an interesting dub-house journey. Rossko presented himself as the quirkier DJ of the bunch, as his tracks were more abstract, hovering over big, basey beats. Working with the crowd, Rossko took his basement of ravers through two hours of his unique and innovative ‘Fusic’ music. Lifting the tempo and moving to a more pumping baseline, the crowd reaction grew in excitement, sending revellers searching for more space on the dance floor so they could really let loose and get down with the sound. Nearing the end of the set, he left his audience with their hands in the air with atmospheric, minimal beats, clearing the path for Fuse’s lead resident, Enzo Siragusa.

At Sankeys Ibiza, It’s Wednesday again, and we headed down for another hit of the weekly underground party, Fuse. A long standing institution on the London clubbing scene, Fuse is continuing to make its mark on the underground house and techno scene, managing to keep their offerings fresh and unique, delivering some of the most innovative and exciting sounds on the island. But what makes this party truly special is its ability to draw one of the best crowds week in and week out, all without the need to fluff its line up with big draw headliners - save for the rare, special occasion - instead keeping the focus squarely on the Fuse residents, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

When Fuse founder, Enzo Siragusa comes to the decks, you can feel the anticipation running high on the dance floor. From the Fuse regulars who hold their residing space in front of the DJ booth, to the new additions throughout the low ceiling Sankeys Basement, Enzo Siragusa lifts the tempo ever so slightly, while maintaining the flow like the pro he is. Enzo brings big base flowing dub-techno to all his revellers. With chunkier baselines and his innovative blend of dub-house and techno, which the Fuse faithful have labeled ‘Fusic’, he always keeps the club full of intrigued listeners, remaining locked to the dance floor week after week. Lifting the crowd with vocal samples like Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good,’ Enzo Siragusa is consistently innovative and fresh, encompassing the Fuse brand in both ethos and style. Boss.

The Fuse loyal got an extra special treat for the closing party this week, with a two hour back to back journey from residents Seb Zito and Rich Nxt, who are both long standing members of the Fuse family. Both mixed it up, complimenting each other’s sound with low slung, dirty baselines, infused with soulful vocals, creating a hypnotic projection of sounds. The Fuse boys have once again smashed it, keeping the dance floor packed right up until closing, making Sankeys the only place to be on a Wednesday night.

Until next week.
