Showcase: Joop Junior

Joop Junior’s career is almost as young as he was when he started producing and pushing out Bassline driven and infectious Techno out of the studio. Not to be taken lightly though, Joop’s career has been anything but ‘under the radar’ as Techno-Pioneer Richie Hawtin has been releasing Joop Junior’s tracks under his record label M-nus.

Besides crafting his art and having it showcased by the very top-shelf masters themselves, Joop, the ‘free-spirit’ from The Hague has been busy behind the scenes setting up his own label and organising events respectively. These are the sort of milestones in an artist’s career that enables a very interesting and for the most part successful career, very excited to see what Joop Junior has in store for us in the near future.

Watch this video below of Richie Hawtin banging out Joop's sounds at Tomorrowland.

When we said Richie Hawtin has been releasing Joop’s tracks we never quite said how the proverbial snowball actually got rolling. A little unorthodox but valiantly earned, Joop had thrown his USB stick…in Richie Hawtins direction while the superstar DJ was playing a festival. Soon to follow was a release on album New Horizons, an M-nus compilation distributed by well-known industry magazine Mixmag. With Joops style and quality of production – this is not surprising at all.

Heading back into the past, and into The Hague to add scope to Joop’s success his distinctive grooves, hypnotizing percussions, ringing synths and tight beats caught the ear of Tech-House acts Remy and Patch Park who then soon released his EP on their label Fone Audio.

The EP was well received by world-famous DJs such as Adam Beyer, Joseph Capriati, Karotte and Marco Bailey, it was from this point onwards that Joop Junior’s career started to pick up at a steady pace.

The Hague based producer has been busy lately working hard in the studio and getting good results. After the successes Joop pulled in after the first half of 2012 he decided to put in some time and release something new, and extra special. Not long after bouncing the ‘fresh outa the oven’ tracks with top-shelf Techno DJ Richie Hawtin, Joop Junior presents his SONUS.1 release on MINUS with tracks ‘Triangle’ and ‘Saw’ - Both bangers!!

Joop is nowhere near done with the world, or the world with him.

Six Flags Electric Adventure Cancelled Citing Deaths at Electric Zoo

In light of a series of recent tragic events in the American EDM community, promoters have become more concerned about holding high-profile electronic music events. Electric Adventure at Six Flags New England amusement park was scheduled to be held on September 28th in Massachusetts but was just cancelled by organizers citing the two deaths at New York’s Electric Zoo.

People began suspecting a cancellation when the event decided to postpone its lineup announcement a few days ago:

Yesterday Electric Adventure finally announced that it is postponing the entire event until next year:

Fans reacted very negatively to this decision on the event’s Facebook page prompting organizers to release the following statement claiming that they felt putting on such an event right now was too risky given the sudden cancellation of last weekend’s Electric Zoo.

“Fedde Le Grand, Zeds Dead, Excision, and other marquee talent were all rumored to perform, but organizers felt that in light of the recent tragedy at Electric Zoo last weekend, the risk was too great for the park to take on the event at this time. All fans who have already purchased tickets will be fully refunded.”

Past editions of Electric Adventure have featured artists such as Excision, Dada Life, Dillon Francis, 12th Planet, Seven Lions, and Flosstradamus.

Creamfields Beirut Cancelled Because of Potential Syria Conflict

The first edition of Creamfields in Beirut scheduled for this Saturday, September 7th has been cancelled by its British organizers because of security concerns in the Middle East. The festival was supposed to take place on the Beirut waterfront and would have featured DJs Seth Troxler, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Dash Berlin, Aly & Fila, and more. Creamfields Beirut would have been the biggest one-day musical event in Beirut’s history.

The event was cancelled because the Creamfields Headquarters in the UK feared for the safety of the DJs scheduled to play at the festival. JK58, the creative agency that was hosting the Creamfields offshoot in Beirut released a statement explaining its decision to cancel the festival: “The difficult decision to cancel was made in light of recently updated travel warnings from various governments in North America and Europe and followed by lengthy consultation between all parties involved in the organisation of this year's festival.“

Several DJs who were supposed to play at the festival have expressed their feelings about the situation on Twitter.

In the days leading up to the festival, promoters were doing everything in their power to save the event from being cancelled. They had increased security measures and were expecting a solid turnout from both the Lebanese population and the international community despite heightened concerns about safety. JK58 will be holding a news conference this evening to further explain why the festival was cancelled.

Luciano Returns To Richie Hawtin's ENTER.

In a week that is notoriously tough to sell out parties on the island, the leading light came from a party that’s all built around a little black dot.

Now in its second year, Richie Hawtin’s latest wave of genius, ENTER. has become the talk of the town – so of course it was going to be filled to the rafters! Week 10 brought a very special guest, as Luciano vs Richie Hawtin took place for the second year in a row. Having had my first ENTER. experience last week, I was back for more, this time heading their early to catch Cadenza’s leading man play Enter.’s official pre-party in the Sunset Terrace, renamed the Sake Bar, in keeping with the Japanese theme of the party. There you can find delicious and exquisite sake cocktails in a very Zen setting.

At the time, words failed me to describe the quality of Luciano’s vinyl only performance, though. to say this could go down as one of the performances of the season so far would just about do it justice. Many talk about Luciano and how his sound evolved from minimal techno to an infusion of house and techno with extended build-ups and piano riffs. Last night there was no debate, Luciano and his vinyl collection took me to place I have not been to in a very long time. His flawless and ingenious transitions from track to track, his charisma behind the decks, and the overall vibe of the Sake bar made this an occasion that you felt privileged to be a part of.

Once Luciano finished up, all of Space’s rooms were now fully open for thousands of music lovers who were free to explore Hawtin’s playground. The Terrace packed out very quickly, Andrea Olivia replaced Ernesto Ferreyra going back-to-back with Mirko Loco before Cassy weaved her magic, putting a spell on every human being that stepped foot on to what is my favourite dance floor in the world. She effortlessly upped the tempo, and the British DJ who was making her first appearance at Enter created a silky smooth wave of sound reminiscent of her recent Fabric 71 mix.

It was time to plunge into the main room, where Christian Smith was turning the Discoteca into a sweatbox. Clubbers of all languages and cultures were wrestling for position trying to get the best view possible of one of their favorite techno stars, crowding in ever further towards the booth. After a hard core boogie, we were in need of a cool off before the nights main attraction, going up for ‘Air’ on the roof, chilling out to cool, relaxing beats.

After picking up the pieces and counting my marbles, the night was still young, and one of my favourite underground queens was in control of the Terrace. Madga is a DJ who isn’t too flamboyant behind the decks, instead taking a precise approach to things, so when she unleashes devastatingly nasty bass lines, it can really throw you for a loop, in the best possible way!

Spot on 6am, I made my way through the heaving masses getting a solid spot of dance floor in Space’s main room. Hawtin and Luciano unleashed a fury of big room techno that bounced from wall to wall, rattling our rib cages as we entered darker territory. Hawtin and Luciano traded punches all night, working together magically, leaving the entire cavernous main room packed to the gills right up until close.

Next week, Damian Lazarus returns with fellow Rebel raver Francesca Lombardo while Nina Kraviz headlines the Sake Bar early on. ENTER., I’ll see you early next Thursday for the addictive house sounds of the Russian goddess that is Nina Kraviz!

Grab tickets to next week's ENTER. with Richie Hawtin, Paco Osuna, Ambivalent , Damian Lazarus, Mathew Jonson, Barem, Francesca Lombardo, Nina Kraviz and more!

"Mothers Against Molly" Is Illiterate, Quite Possibly Real And Created A Petition To Ban EDM

$

If you've been monitoring your Facebook feeds or kicking it old school by watching the news recently, you've no doubt seen some glimpses of the uninformed hysteria that has followed in the wake of the highly publicized deaths at New York's Electric Zoo Festival this past Labor Day weekend. The majority of it has been a result of the drug blamed for the supposed overdoses officially entering the middle American zeitgeist with television shows as unrelated to EDM as Access Hollywood Live devoting an entire segment to it.

Facebook now has a "Ban EDM now" fanpage which states, "The EDM scene is filled with junkies, rapist and sinners. It must be stopped at once." The posts it creates are riddled with CAPS LOCK, misspellings, hyperbole and speculative analysis of song lyrics that are flat out hilarious. They've even created some memes in support of their cause. It's so ridiculous that we're still thinking it's very likely fake - with their Twitter account @BanEdmNow currently suspended.

Now comes word of a petition over at the Whitehouse.gov website that aims to ban all genres of electronic music because, as its creator's gramatically incorrect prose reads : "After the recent deaths at New Yorks Electric Zoo weekend. I firmly believe we should ban the the manufacturing of electronic dance music. It is turning our children into drug addicts and murderers." The petition has a whopping 34 signatures and only needs another 99,966 in order to actually be addressed by the Obama Administration.

Regardless of whether this whole thing is an elaborate 4chan troll or an actual pathetic attempt to ban something uninformed Christian America doesn't understand, people are certainly getting swept up in the movement by thinking its real.  It's a telling reminder of how resistant our country can be to something it doesn't entirely understand and how much the mainstream media can affect public perception in alarming ways. As recently as yesterday the fear mongering that's been part and parcel to all the news surrounding "Molly Deaths" and EDM's responsibility for them has resulted in the cancellation of Six Flag's Electric Adventure in New England.

Daniel Sanchez on His South African Debut

$

The Amsterdam based artist with Spanish roots is always about thinking forward and creating a buzz with every project he starts. From making waves in early 21st century Amsterdam nightlife to headlining gigs at the biggest events and festivals around the world like Awakenings, Nature One, Time Warp, A Day At The Park and Welcome To The Future and tours through Europe as well as North and South America, Daniel Sanchez has grown out to be a familiar force in today's electronic music. He is also known for his Bla Bla nights in the Wester Unie and studio80, his record label Bla Bla, and of course his hit record 'Mumbling Yeah' which dominated clubs and festivals throughout '07 and '08.  We had a quick sit-down with Daniel, ahead of his South African debut, a first not only for him, but also for Sensation as its “Innerspace” is also visiting South Africa for the first time.

There are some comments people were dropping on mention of your Tour to SA requesting you bring back some wild life. Jokes of course, or maybe not, it’s a common misconception that we have the wild on our door-steps. What are your expectations being your first time out? Thanks for the question, it's simply just amazing. I have been on to many places in the world but this will be my first time in South Africa and I’m honoured to let the people hear my music.

You do a lot of traveling, a lot of the time. How do you manage the married life and being on the road as often as you are? You need to find a good balance between traveling and staying in your own city to spend time with your family and friends. Otherwise your social life will be gone. I get a lot of energy from my private life and I'm blessed to have it.

What do you have planned after Sensation? Do you plan to stick around and get a taste of the scene out here? Yes for sure. We always try to make a good afterparty.

Just recently you played an abstract live-set at the ‘Old Honig Fabric’ in Nijmegen on the 31st of August. Can you tell us what inspired you to play a set inspired by Cosmic noise and Plasma Rain? What’s behind that? I’m a big fan of ambient music. When I was starting to produce music I was fascinated by ambient music and started to make it myself. The ambient scene is a completely different experience than all the other parties we have nowadays. Once in a while I try to do a live set on an art festival, for my own inspiration. It keeps me sharp!

Have you ever had your hand at producing? Do you think it’s the next step for a DJ to go in one's career? It’s all a combination and it has to fit! Right time, right moment.

A lot of DJs are against the idea of a DJ reality show based on it exploiting and trivialising the industry. What’s your stand point on that? Do you share the same sentiment or do you think it would be a good thing to have these reality shows enter the realm of EDM? That’s nothing for me either, but everything is changing these days and the young people are now deciding. If a reality show comes up, you can’t do anything about it. Just keep your stuff close to you, that will bring you further.

We Love... Jimmy Edgar

If there is a ‘normal’ way to begin a career as a DJ, it’s probably safe to say that Detroit born, Berlin based Jimmy Edgar’s initial foray into the world of mixing in front of a live audience was not it. At the tender age of 15, Edgar was doing his thing at a brothel, called simply, The Whore House, back in Detroit.

From there, Jimmy ventured out into photography and design, as well as music, while gaining a reputation for having a bit of a wild side. Though when your early days as a DJ are spent in whorehouses, it’s likely going to be an interesting ride.

These days, Edgar has put most of his extreme habits behind him, instead opting for meditation and balance, giving him more peace of mind, especially when it comes to making music, releasing on such lauded imprints as Get Physical, Hotflush, K7 and Gruuv over the years. He recently mixed disc two of the recent We Love… Detroit compilation along with fellow Detroit native Derrick May, and came to We Love… Space with Machinedrum as part of the duo JETS. He’s now returning to We Love… tomorrow night at Space for a back-to-back set with Derrick, which is sure to be a real whopper!

So we caught up with Jimmy to chat We Love…, his relationship with Derrick May, his recent We Love… compilation, and find out a little about what he’s got in store for us tomorrow night.

Hey Jimmy! Thanks for taking the time to talk with Pulse Radio today. I am grateful to be here, thank you for having me.

This will be your debut at We Love… Space, yet you were selected along with Derrick May to mix the We Love… Detroit compilation. Who contacted you about doing the mix, and how did the whole thing come about? Yes my debut as myself, but I played a few weeks ago with JETS, my group project with Machinedrum. The guys over at We Love... hit me up with the idea, and it was hard to refuse. I feel very much a part of the evolving history of Detroit in my own way since I didn't really follow any heritage or lineage. I got to where I am not by piggy backing on these artists, but I gained respect from them from doing my own thing. Derrick and Juan were my biggest supporters after I signed to Warp and Derrick always said I was Juan's ‘long lost cosmic twin brother.’ I love how Derrick said this because I always felt such an affinity with Juan; with his whole style, approach and most of all his music. The compilation was just our chance to show our vibes complete.

How closely did you work with May, if at all, in putting together your respective mixes? Unfortunately we didn't work together at all. He did his and I did mine. Though he probably didn't want any of my input in his history and I sure didn't need anyone interjecting into what I had going on. We tried to clear some amazing songs that couldn't make the cut.

How did you go about selecting tracks for the mix? I basically just asked my friends and chose the best. My tracks that made the cut were my home town anthems, personally. The songs that gave me this vibe about Detroit, mostly driving around the city in the morning, early rave days, getting into all types of trouble. I miss Detroit a lot but it just doesn't make sense to live there.

What’s it like to have the opportunity to play back-to-back with such a storied and prolific figurehead in electronic music such as Derrick May at a party like We Love…? I've known Derrick for a while. He does intimidate me a bit because he is so charismatic and sarcastic, but he is really cool to hang out with. I'm from Detroit so I never saw him as Europeans do... to you guys he is almost godlike. I have so much respect for Derrick and what he has done musically and socially. I am completely rooting for my city when I see him play. It makes me proud.

Has the island been high on your list of places to play? I'm so excited to come back. Last time was fun.

Do you have anything special in store for the We Love… crowd for Sunday? Yes, I’ve been planning my set for weeks because this is a special night for me. Derrick and I playing again together after 10 years, so this tour with him is sort of like loop that is being complete with my new statement as a DJ. I suppose I’m seeking approval from Derrick, but not by giving into expectations by really impressing everyone. I plan on playing tons of new music of my own as well.

You can catch Jimmy tomorrow night at We Love... along with Derrick May, Claude Vonstroke, DJ Hell, Agoria, Technasia, Jimmy Edgar, Little Boots Discotheque, Lottie, Kitt Proudfoot and many more. Get your tickets now!

Never one to shy away from sharing his political views, Thom Yorke has made his opinion on Australia's newly elected Prime Minister Tony Abbott clear (he, erm, doesn't like him). The Radiohead and Atoms For Peace frontman recently tweeted a link to an essay titled "Abbottalypse Now" by journalist George Monbiot which states that Tony Abbott “intends to trash Australia on behalf of the super-rich.”

The essay, originally published in The Guardian, also puts forth the view that under Abbott's rule:

“The country will be run exclusively for the class to which Gina Reinhardt, Clive Palmer and Ivan Glasenberg belong: the one per cent of the One Per Cent. Forget the pious rhetoric and nationalistic bombast. Abbott’s policies are really about removing the social and environmental protections enjoyed by all Australians, to allow the filthy rich to become richer – and filthier.”

William Kouam Djoko Returns to Carnival at Sankeys Ibiza

As everyone knows, these days Sankeys has a stellar underground line up each and every night. However, some nights we are given the opportunity to not only say thanks, but also enjoy a set by the man who helped put it all together. Carnival’s musical director, BONES, throws together an amazing night each Saturday by selecting a handful of DJs from one corner of the earth to the next, giving Ibiza a fresh dose of music outside our little yet amazing bubble.

This Saturday was another one of BONES’ extremely well curated nights, with the likes of William Kouam Djoko, Alexis Raphael, Deniz Bilgic and more. A relative newcomer, William KD is a name getting tossed around all the right circles at the moment. And with sets like that of Saturday’s, it’s only a matter of time before Djoko is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. An absolute belter of a set was thrown down tonight by Djoko, not only giving everyone in the crowd what they wanted, but also taking them on a musical journey to places they didn’t even know they should be. Djoko was toying playfully with the crowd, effortlessly crossing genres that spanned all spectrums of dance music. Djoko tossed in crowd favorites like Ninetoes’ ‘Finder,’ rocking the audience to its core, keeping the crowd packed in tight, knowing no matter what he weaved in along the journey, it would be just right.

Thank God We Are Rebels was hosting the Spektrum side room, and with the likes of Deniz Bilgic, there was very good reason to take temporary leave of the hustle and bustle taking place in the main room. Eclectic seemed to be the theme of the evening as Deniz kicked things off with a jungle influenced sound – bass intensive and energetic, slowly moving into a darker and much heavier techno set that kept bodies moving.

If he’s not already on your ‘DJs to watch out for list,’ Alexis Raphael should be. Signed with Hot Natured, and best known for 2012’s monster ‘I Know’ and 2011’s ‘Skalamoosh,’ Raphael has a true knack for creating timeless tunes that destroy dance floors well beyond his peer’s usual expiry date. A staple within the deep house scene, though tossing in the well timed techno bomb here and there for good measure, we heard an energy filled opening followed by the classic wobbles and samples that keeps us all coming back for the deep stuff.

Techno seemed to be the massive theme of the night as all DJs were laying out track after track of heavy hitting floor stompers. Deep house may not be on its way out just yet, but techno is definitely having its moment this season, as DJ after DJ, no matter their musical background, have all been playing out some of the largest techno tracks out there in their respective sets.

Chart baiting disco house crew Azari & III are to mix the latest edition of Get Physical's Body Language mix series.

Azari & III made a huge impact on the popular music consensus, with their music and high profile remixes making their way outside of the electronic music scene. The duo - Alixander III and Dinamo Azari - turned their act into a four piece live band and released a lauded debut album. For the 13th edition of the series, the two producers helm up a disc each , with both discs dropping the more house styled output of Get Physical and their own disco funk leanings for a surprising focus on techno and leftfield electronica, featuring the likes of Plastikman, Shed and Moire. Scuba, Locked Groove and Tommy Four Seven also appear.

After being debuted at Coachella last year, holographic technology was once again used to resurrect some of hip hops most loved deceased stars at this weekend's Rock The Bells festival in the US.

This time, the holograms weren't so much as a surprise as they were when wheeled out at Coachella, being hinted at in mainstream media such as the LA Times. And true to word, NWA member Easy E made a posthumous appearance at Rock the Bells touring hip hop Festival, coming on stage for a cameo during Bone Thugs N Harmony's set on Saturday night, treating fans to renditions of  ‘Straight Outta Compton’, ‘Boyz-N-The-Hood’ and ‘Foe That Love Of $'. Check it out above.

And that wasnt the only star to receive the holographic treatment either; Wu Tang's ex-resident badman, Ol' Dirty bastard, also performed with his former bandmates last night at the festival. According to the L.A Times, both families of the deceased had been contacted to approve the desicion.

Is this new technology  - and method of bringing back sorely missed musicians - going to become more commonplace in future years? Or should deceased musicians be left to rest in peace? Leave us your thoughts in the comments section below.
