If there is a ‘normal’ way to begin a career as a DJ, it’s probably safe to say that Detroit born, Berlin based Jimmy Edgar’s initial foray into the world of mixing in front of a live audience was not it. At the tender age of 15, Edgar was doing his thing at a brothel, called simply, The Whore House, back in Detroit.
From there, Jimmy ventured out into photography and design, as well as music, while gaining a reputation for having a bit of a wild side. Though when your early days as a DJ are spent in whorehouses, it’s likely going to be an interesting ride.
These days, Edgar has put most of his extreme habits behind him, instead opting for meditation and balance, giving him more peace of mind, especially when it comes to making music, releasing on such lauded imprints as Get Physical, Hotflush, K7 and Gruuv over the years. He recently mixed disc two of the recent We Love… Detroit compilation along with fellow Detroit native Derrick May, and came to We Love… Space with Machinedrum as part of the duo JETS. He’s now returning to We Love… tomorrow night at Space for a back-to-back set with Derrick, which is sure to be a real whopper!
So we caught up with Jimmy to chat We Love…, his relationship with Derrick May, his recent We Love… compilation, and find out a little about what he’s got in store for us tomorrow night.
Hey Jimmy! Thanks for taking the time to talk with Pulse Radio today. I am grateful to be here, thank you for having me.
This will be your debut at We Love… Space, yet you were selected along with Derrick May to mix the We Love… Detroit compilation. Who contacted you about doing the mix, and how did the whole thing come about? Yes my debut as myself, but I played a few weeks ago with JETS, my group project with Machinedrum. The guys over at We Love... hit me up with the idea, and it was hard to refuse. I feel very much a part of the evolving history of Detroit in my own way since I didn't really follow any heritage or lineage. I got to where I am not by piggy backing on these artists, but I gained respect from them from doing my own thing. Derrick and Juan were my biggest supporters after I signed to Warp and Derrick always said I was Juan's ‘long lost cosmic twin brother.’ I love how Derrick said this because I always felt such an affinity with Juan; with his whole style, approach and most of all his music. The compilation was just our chance to show our vibes complete.
How closely did you work with May, if at all, in putting together your respective mixes? Unfortunately we didn't work together at all. He did his and I did mine. Though he probably didn't want any of my input in his history and I sure didn't need anyone interjecting into what I had going on. We tried to clear some amazing songs that couldn't make the cut.
How did you go about selecting tracks for the mix? I basically just asked my friends and chose the best. My tracks that made the cut were my home town anthems, personally. The songs that gave me this vibe about Detroit, mostly driving around the city in the morning, early rave days, getting into all types of trouble. I miss Detroit a lot but it just doesn't make sense to live there.
What’s it like to have the opportunity to play back-to-back with such a storied and prolific figurehead in electronic music such as Derrick May at a party like We Love…? I've known Derrick for a while. He does intimidate me a bit because he is so charismatic and sarcastic, but he is really cool to hang out with. I'm from Detroit so I never saw him as Europeans do... to you guys he is almost godlike. I have so much respect for Derrick and what he has done musically and socially. I am completely rooting for my city when I see him play. It makes me proud.
Has the island been high on your list of places to play? I'm so excited to come back. Last time was fun.
Do you have anything special in store for the We Love… crowd for Sunday? Yes, I’ve been planning my set for weeks because this is a special night for me. Derrick and I playing again together after 10 years, so this tour with him is sort of like loop that is being complete with my new statement as a DJ. I suppose I’m seeking approval from Derrick, but not by giving into expectations by really impressing everyone. I plan on playing tons of new music of my own as well.
You can catch Jimmy tomorrow night at We Love... along with Derrick May, Claude Vonstroke, DJ Hell, Agoria, Technasia, Jimmy Edgar, Little Boots Discotheque, Lottie, Kitt Proudfoot and many more. Get your tickets now!
