Carl Cox's Revolution DJ Competition Winners: Deiva & Djos

The final winners of this year’s Carl Cox ‘The Revolution Unites’ DJ competition are headed to Cox’s party on September 3rd for a chance to play the massive and storied venue, so we caught up with Deiva & Djos beforehand to get their reaction to winning such a big contest.

Though sometimes it can feel like we’ve been sucked into a world where house and techno rule all, let’s face it, most of us grew up listening to a variety of music, guiding us in many different directions over the course of our lives.

Such is the case with French DJ duo Deiva and Djos, whose roots lie in styles like metal and hardcore, eventually making the transition to electro and techno, right up the street of some of Carl Cox’s more energetic sets. The two are the third and final winners of the highly competitive and illustrious Carl Cox ‘The Revolution Unites’ DJ competition, who won by displaying more of their diverse musical range, smoothly cascading from dark and dirty Maetrik to deep house grooves like Dusky’s ‘Nobody Else.’ So we caught up with Deiva and Djos ahead of their set at Carl Cox’s infamous party at Space Ibiza, happening in El Salon on September 3rd.

First off, congratulations on winning the DJ competition!

What has it been like to win such a big competition?Djos: Wow, it's incredible! When I received the email, which announced we had won, I read it many times to be sure I understood. It was like a dream come true!
Deiva: Absolutely, when Djos told me we won the contest, I cried tears of joy!
Djos: We have been DJs together for a long time, and we are really passionate about music, so to win such a DJ competition with Carl Cox, it is a true accomplishment, it’s an honor.
Deiva: Yes, because we are totally crazy about Carl Cox! He’s one of our favorite DJs! That's the reason why we participated in this contest.
Djos: Oh Yes! Oh Yes! Carl Cox is the best!

Did you do anything extra special for the winning mix you submitted? Deiva: This mix was a challenge for us because we made a deep house mix to be in coherence with the rules of the contest, but it’s not the style we usually play. Normally, we mix electro and techno.
Djos: Yes, but we are able to adapt our set. We listen to a lot of styles. We love a lot of artists...we are music lovers!
Deiva: Winning with this mix was a really big satisfaction. Nobody knows us for playing this style, and its funny to be where you are not expected.

Has anything changed with your DJ and production careers now that you’ve won? Djos: Only the future will tell, but we hope!
Deiva: We hope to have more gigs in Europe, and we hope to come to play again in Ibiza at Space for the Carl Cox Revolution parties.
Djos: We are producers too, and it can be good if a label likes our tracks and signs us.

Who have been some of your biggest musical influences over the years? Djos: We listen to a lot of music, but especially all kinds of electro, rock and hip-hop.
Deiva: When we were younger, we listened to a lot of hard music (hardcore, metal, hard techno). We started our DJ career in raves and free parties. We used to play hardcore and hard techno. Now, we love to play electro, techno, and sometimes dubstep. Most of the time, our sound is an invitation to the dance floor! We love artists like Boys Noize, Vitalic, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Nero, Orchestrated, Gtronic, Destroid, Proxy, Will Sparks, Knife Party,...
Djos : Chris Liebing, Ben Clock, Maceo Plex, Hedflux, and the pope of techno music, Carl Cox!

Have you been to Ibiza before? If so, when did you visit and what did you think? Deiva: Our first time in Ibiza was in 2011. We fell in love with the island, and since then we’ve come every summer!
Djos: Each year, we organize our holidays according to the Carl Cox Revolution opening! We don't want to miss it!
Deiva: We made the opening last July. It was fantastic as usual.

Playing at Space Ibiza for Carl Cox’s night is a major accomplishment! Are you excited to come play such a big night at one of the world’s best clubs? Djos: You can't imagine how proud we are and especially pleased. It will be one of the happiest days of our lives!
Deiva: I think I will cry tears of joy again!

What do you have in store for us that night? Deiva: We have chosen a lot of new fresh tracks especially for our Space's night. We plan to play deep house, house, nu disco and then tech house for the finish.
Djos: We will play evaluative sets adapted to El Salon, the room were we will play.
Deiva: Happy music for happy people!

Other than Space, do you have any big shows coming up in the near future? Deiva: In August, we played 2 times in Paris at a few big clubs - Le Batofar and Le Glazart. And in September, we have another big date, which is The N.A.M.E Festival. It’s the biggest electronic festival in the north of France! It takes place on the 20th and 21st of September, and we will make the opening of the Boysnoize Records Stage with Boysnoize, Strip Steeve, Rustie & Hudson Mohawke!
Djos: September is a fantastic month for us! We will meet two of our favorite artists and we will play in very, very good parties!
Deiva: We hope its just the beginning!

Along with Deiva & Djos, September 3rd sees Loco Dice taking over the Main Room for Carl Cox, along with Carl Craig, Nina Kraviz and Ben Sims, so get your tickets now!

11 Best MTV Video Music Awards Moments 1984-2013

$

0

In light of THAT Miley Cyrus performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which has landed the channel in hot water with the angry and disgusted parents of America, we thought it only fitting to look back on the most memorable moments from the awards show's 29-year history. Band feuds, nudity and some cracking live performances all feature. Enjoy.

#11 Madonna performs 'Like A Virgin' (1984)

The Queen of Pop busts out her hit single wrapped in a wedding gown at the first ever MTV VMAs. She also rolls around on the floor for a while. This is probably what controversy looked like in 1984.

#10 Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' nabs 10 awards (1987)
The former Genesis frontman sweeps the awards with a record-breaking 10 awards for his 1986 hit 'Sledgehammer,' still the most VMAs won by any artist in the one year. Rightly so, too; a stone cold pop classic.

#9 Nirvana trash the stage and taunt Axl Rose (1992)
After performing their hit song 'Lithium,' bassist Krist Novoselic throws his guitar in the air which accidentally lands on his head. He stumbles off stage while Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl then go about trashing their equipment. Grohl then gets on the mic and says, "Hi Axl! Where's Axl?" taunting the Guns 'N' Roses singer due to a fight that had almost broke out backstage earlier in the evening.

#8 Michael Jackson pashes his wife Lisa Marie Presley on stage (1994)
He might have been the King Of Pop, but damn he was an odd fellow. Mikey J brings Elvis' daughter on stage, says something about how people thought their marriage wouldn't last, plants a wet one on her and then walks off. What a smooth criminal.

#7 Eminem disses Moby (2002)
The Real Slim Shady wins Best Male Video for 'Without Me' and has a dig at the electronic musician (who had labeled the rapper's music as misogynistic and homophobic) during his acceptance speech. The majority of the crowd then boo the M&M.

#6 Fiona Apple slams celebrity culture (1997)
What ever happened to this chick? In 1997 she used her acceptance speech to proclaim, "the world is bullshit." Apple must truly cringe at the state of pop and celebrity culture now.

#5 The year of Lil' Kim's breast (1999)
The R&B star rocks up the the awards with her entire left titty hanging out which Diana Ross then grabs and jiggles whilst the pair are on stage presenting an award with Mary J. Blige. Don't you miss the 90s?

#4 The Rose McGowan see-through dress (1998)
The actress attends the awards with goth rocker boyfriend Marilyn Manson wearing a see-through dress, no bra, and a thong. It's an image forever burned into my teen memories.

#3 Madonna introduces Prodigy at the height of their popularity (1997)
After giving a rather moving speech on Princess Diana (who had just recently died in a car crash), Madonna introduces a match-fit Prodigy at the height of their powers, who give arguably one of their best live performances ever. The band's performance did not occur at the awards, but via a satellite stream from V Festival in England. (The first video below is Madonna's introduction, the second a better quality version of Prodigy's performance.)

#2 Miley Cyrus twerks all over Robin Thicke (2013)
Not really much to explain here, we've all seen it by now, but why can't we stop watching it? There have been lots of articles doing the rounds of late defending Cyrus' performance and asking why people have been so shocked. Well, how about the fact that she's gyrating around on stage like a trashy hooker in the name of fame, for starters.

#1 Kanye West reveals he is a complete dick (2009)
The rapper shows up unexpectedly on stage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, grabs the mic off her and proclaims, "Yo Tay, I'm really happy for you, and Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" The next day President Obama calls West a "jackass".

Video: Is This Richie Hawtin's Most Epic DJ Fail Ever?

$
0
0

There appears to be a bit of the old 'tall poppy syndrome' happening to Richie Hawtin at present. The Sabotage Times penned a rather scathing write up yesterday which claims that the veteran techno pioneer is "not longer relevant" and now a video of Hawtin playing Cocoon at Amnesia Ibiza is doing the rounds which makes the claim of an "epic DJ fail".

In the video the music stops several times much to Hawtin's confusion and he pulls friends over into the DJ booth before massively stage-diving into the crowd. He's clearly wasted and enjoying himself, plus word on the interwebs is that at this point it was around 9:30am, so you could probably excuse him for opting to let his hair down and simply chuck on a few tracks, right?

So the question stands: Is the video really the epic fail people are making it out to be? Or is everyone just using it as an excuse to take a legend of the industry down several pegs? Have a watch below and decide for yourself.

Ibiza’s Top 5 Biggest Moments So Far

tINI And The Gang Takeover of Fuse at Sankeys Ibiza

tINI and Fuse go together like butter and toast, complimenting each other’s styles better than most any other artists on the island right now. tINI at Fuse is always one of the most anticipated events of the season, and this year’s takeover didn’t disappoint. Sankeys Basement was made for nights like this.

Marco Carola plays the Flash Gordon theme song at Music On

I mean, really? This guy is absolutely on fire right now. This season, Carola’s been dropping in some of the most random and cheeky edits into his dark, stripped back techno sets, including Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ a few weeks back. To top it off, Carola always waits until close to the very end of his sets for these moments. Proof positive that the Italian techno god is one of the most brave and forward thinking artists of today, getting away with mind boggling moves that most other jocks only dream of.

Black Coffee Debut for Circoloco at DC-10

As one of the world’s most famous and respected clubs, DC-10 has been home to some of the best moments in clubbing history over the years. But so far, South Africa’s biggest electronic music export, Black Coffee, making his debut at Circoloco earlier this summer, remains one of the most talked about and unique events of the season so far. Hell, who else has the mojo to sample ‘Gangnam Style’ at the underground institution and get away with it? This was one for the history books.

Richie Hawtin’s return to Cocoon at Amnesia

As has been talked about on Pulse Radio, this was a big moment for slightly different reasons than the rest. While

Marco Carola vs. Carl Cox at Space

So far this season, this was without a doubt the night to top them all. Two of the island’s biggest techno jocks going back to back in Space’s massive and electric main room until the wee hours of the morning. What more needs to be said? If you missed out on this one, be sure to get over to Music On this Friday, as King Cox and Maestro Carola will be ripping Amnesia’s terrace to shreds. Be sure to grab tickets below, and don't miss Cox's exclusive mix from their back-to-back set, which you can stream here.

This is gonna be HUGE! So make sure to get your tickets to this week's Music On with none other than Carl Cox before it's too late!

Pulse Loves... Ambivalent & Michael L Penman

$

Artists are often known for their affiliations on certain labels and outlets - but increasingly in today's climate, people are starting to branch out further from their comfort zone, in turn exploring the range, depth and ideals of their musical output. And why not?

Deep, minimal techno producer Ambivalent knows all about this - after cutting his teeth for Richie Hawtin's Minus and Plus8 stables, the American born, Berlin residing artist has joined forces with UK house producer Michael L Penman for a release on Ovum recordings. The result of a blossoming friendship, the latest release demonstrates their sound as it crosses paths at various points, connecting at bass heavy, groove laden intersections that're delivered in a state of dancefloor equilibrium. here, the pair step forth for an exclusive Pulse Loves mix and interview, so don't delay: read and listen on below as they shed further light on their fruitful partnership.

Pulse Loves...collaborations. How did you first come to collaborate with each other? What do you feel you both bring to the table in terms of sound and style? Michael: I guess we have known each other for a while now. So when we finally found ourselves in the same city together with a studio at our disposal it was inevitable. Once in the studio I found we just clicked and worked on a lot of ideas and the Shimmer release was the result.

Kevin: We met after I’d been listening to Michael’s music for a while. When he was in Berlin, I invited him to my studio, and things just flowed. The music really came from just being open to whatever worked for each individual idea. We didn’t filter things by a certain sound or style, we just followed each idea to its own completion. That might be the reason for why the release is such a unique mix of sounds. It was fun to pursue a different set of techniques each time we had an idea to work on.

Michael: I feel we both have an openness to try new things and to go with the flow. If I bring a slightly weird musical idea to the table it doesn’t get shunned straight away, Kevin embraces it and we just go from there. I would say we just let the music take us on a journey and don’t fight it.

Pulse Loves... Ovum. Tell us about the collaborative project you've released on Josh Wink's label. What is it you like/love about Josh's influential label? Michael: Once we finished the EP, Ovum was our first thought. And thankfully Josh got back to us very quickly. For me it’s always the quality with Ovum, I would buy something on Ovum without even listening to it because I have never been let down.

Kevin: Josh and I have known each other for a while, and I’ve always had enormous respect for him musically as well as personally. I had always told him that “some day” I’d send him music. So when we had a few tracks we liked, Michael and I just really naturally felt Josh would be the first person to approach. He has been wonderfully supportive and that’s great for both of us. Equally as exciting is how the response has been to the release so far. We’ve gotten such amazing feedback from other DJs and listeners. Fans of the label, artists we admire, people who otherwise might not have heard it say such great things about it, and of course they love that it’s on Ovum. We’re both as happy as we could possibly be.

Pulse Loves... the mix you've made for us. what's the special ingredient? Did you both mix it and in what format? Kevin: Because of the nature of our schedules and locations, it was something we couldn’t do together in person. But we wanted to continue the heterogenous approach that the EP has, so there’s a mix of a few different styles on there. Michael and I have both played in clubs together, so we knew what kind of things the other would want, so we put them in an Ableton session and shared it back and forth until we were satisfied with the result. Live mixes are nice, but timezones can prevent that sort of thing. Ultimately a podcast is made any number of ways, as long as it’s good on your “pod”...?

Michael: I added a few of my favorite unreleased tunes, and apart from that we kept it simple and let the music do the work. It’s nice to keep mixes simple without overdoing it.

Pulse Loves... Berlin. Kevin, what are your thoughts on the scene there after the GEMA scare? Are berliners and clubbers unified? Kevin: I’m not in Berlin clubs enough these days, as I travel a lot. When I am, I don’t really notice any new inhibitions or attitudes. But it’s something that definitely comes up when you talk to people outside of clubs. There’s a general consensus that the GEMA situation doesn’t benefit anyone’s interests except a small, powerful group of people, and that definitely will not be agreed to kindly. I think the people who make our living in clubs are the most informed about it, I’m not so sure about the general clubbing population. However, Berlin clubs are not always full of people from Germany, so it’s hard to measure.

Pulse Loves... creative freedom. You must feel happy to be in the position to release different styles for different labels? Are you both still going to be releasing on Mnus/Plus8? Michael: It’s first and foremost about writing music for me. Then once the tracks are finished it’s about finding a home for them where you feel the music will be well represented. We will just have to see what the future holds.

Kevin: I’ve made a decision to open my horizons this year, as I’ve worked exclusively with Minus and Plus 8 for the last 6 years. Working with other labels has been really fun for me, and I really enjoy changing things up a bit. I certainly won’t rule out anything in the future, like Michael said, we will just have to see where the road takes us.

Pulse Loves... the underground. Michael, your trajectory over the last few years has grown massively. What's been a defining moment (or highlight if you will) of your career? Michael: Hmm, a defining moment, thats a hard one. There is no real defining moment but I guess its just about lots of hard work and slowly but surely things start to click into place. I’m a firm believer that everything happens at the right time. It just all just adds up and gives you new skills and experiences which set you on your path. There have been a lot of highlights along the way which have helped with my musical development, like working for Photek, connecting with Kevin, having Richie Hawtin playing my music, the Ovum release of course and the feedback we’ve gotten from that.

Pulse Loves.. the future. What's next for you both individually - and just as inquisitively - as a collaboration? Michael: I have my music in the hands of a few people and just waiting to hear the final word. I’m also working on new tracks everyday. Kevin and I are working on some music which we just need to finish up.

Kevin: I have a number of things coming, as well as special projects I’ll announce next year. It’s already been the most productive and inspiring year ever for me, musically speaking. I have lots more to share, as well as more music with Michael coming. I can honestly say I’m more excited than ever.

Shimmer is out now through Ovum Recordings.

The Erotic Discourse creator has always been a stand fast figure in the world of techno and receives plaudits from big names in both the techno and bass worlds. The album follows on from four hard line EPs  and continues the theme of the raw energy and taste-making ethos of pirate radio and underground, dance music aesthetics. Paul has kept the spirit of analogue, pirate radio transmission alive through the use of a studio built primarily from vintage hardware, of which he uses to capture and sample his own music as it's broadcast through an FM Transmitter. Twerkers delight! The Oxford English Dictionary has chosen to officially add the word, among several others, to the dictionary this year. Other modern words that were added this year include selfie, bitcoin, vom, derp, emoji, fauxhawk, FOMO, geek chic, girl crush, jorts, and selfie.

The twerking phenomenon was popularized by Diplo’s “Butter’s Theme” and Major Lazer’s “Bubble Butt” music videos.  You may remember the video that followed of three women in San Francisico twerking all around the city.  Miley Cyrus further reinforced the scandalous dance move in today’s popular culture with her controversial VMA performance this past weekend and her music video for the single "We Can't Stop."  Diplo is adding to the twerking movement's momentum at this weekend’s Electric Zoo, where he will break a world record with a twerk wall with the help of 50 female dancers.

To justify the addition of the new word to the dictionary, English buff and Oxford Dictionaries’ Katherine Connor Martin stated, “By last year, [twerking] had generated enough currency to be added to our new words watch list, and by this spring, we had enough evidence of usage frequency in a breadth of sources to consider adding it to our dictionaries of current English . . . The current public reaction to twerking is reminiscent in some ways of how the twisting craze was regarded in the early 1960s, when it was first popularized by Chubby Checker’s song, ‘The Twist.”

The Road to Vegas: Worthy

San Francisco based DJ/producer Worthy is perhaps best known as the head honco of Anabatic Records or as one of the founding members of Dirtybird's famous parties in San Francisco.  Originally from the East Coast, he moved to San Francisco in 2001, where he began DJing in the local electronic music scene.  Since then, he has toured across the globe from his home base of San Francisco to Vancouver to Ibiza and more just this summer alone.  He has worked with several labels such as Dirtybird, Discobelle Records, and Alive Records, with his releases supported by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Sven Vath, and Diplo.  We sat down with Worthy ahead of his show this weekend on Saturday, August 31st at Artisan in Las Vegasto discuss getting his start as a DJ in San Francisco, what he has been working on in the studio this summer, and why he's looking forward to his show at Artisan this weekend.

When you began DJing, Vegas wasn’t a destination for dance music. Over the past few years, it’s become known for it but far more for commercial artists than the underground scene. Are you excited that things are starting to change? I think it’s a great thing that the underground is finally really getting to take a hold in Vegas. I think it was only a matter of time that the underground got a better hold in Vegas. I mean it has been there for years but it is nice to see a lineup like the one Artisan has this holiday weekend. It makes me want to stay and party it up all weekend with them.

What have been some standout appearances for you on your summer touring schedule? My two favorite spots I have played this summer have to be at Lightning in a Bottle and Shambhala. Lightning in a Bottle had the craziest stage that I have ever gotten to play on. It was like a nest that was built up into this tree about 15 feet off the ground. I don’t think they even put a single nail into the tree. It was crazy and the crowd was even crazier. And then Shambhala had such an amazing vibe to it as well. It was a festival I have been hearing about for years and it lived up to all of the hype that everyone gave it.

What city did you get your start playing in? Was there a local club or party that you feel a particular kinship with? Is it still going these days and have you had a chance to visit it recently? I got my start in San Francisco as DJ. I played a couple of times in NYC but I give it really to San Francisco for when I got really into it and decided to make a career of it. There was one Sunday night party in San Francisco at this club on Haight Street called the Top that was amazing. It always was packed and everyone who was super into house music and techno would be there. It was a spot for the heads and a place where a lot of us SF heads got our early inspiration from, including Justin and Christian Martin, and Derrick from Tone of Arc was there as well as were some of the guys from Pillow Talk. It is crazy to think back to that now. Unfortunately the Top closed years ago. There is still a club at the same spot but it is just not the same as it used to be.

What sounds are you excited to share with the people of Las Vegas? Any producers who've particularly impressed you in the last couple months we should be keeping our ears open for? I have been really busy in the studio this summer when I have not been on tour or finishing up an album. I have a bunch of new tunes that I can’t wait to play in Vegas and I plan on having at least one more new one to test out on the crowd there too. As for people to keep an eye on, I would say Mark Starr, Lux Groove, and Look Like. They are all making some wicked tunes that I can’t stop playing and I can’t wait to see what other sounds these guys are going to be making in the next year.

Have you been to Vegas before? If so, what do you think is the appropriate ratio of love/fear? I have been to Vegas once before to play about a year and half ago, and after that time I had a bit of fear. Before then I did not fear. Now I am at about 75% love to 25% fear.

Apple Patents Silent Disco Technology

Apple was awarded a patent yesterday for a way it has developed for iOS users to organize a “silent disco” experience using only their Apple devices. The system provides a way for participants to listen and dance to music with similar characteristics by sampling songs from one device and playing similar songs on another.

U.S. patent No. 8,521,316 is for a “coordinated group musical experience” or “sharing of a music experience amongst a group of people each using a personal communication device .” It is Apple’s take on a silent disco, where participants come together and listen to a show using headphones instead of speakers. Silent Discos have become popular alternatives when noise is a concern and have been held at several prominent music festivals such as Coachella, Camp Bisco, and Creamfields.

The difference with Apple’s technology, however, is that participants don’t necessarily have to be listening to the same song or even the same musical genre. Mobile devices are able to determine important musical characteristics such as tempo from the “roving DJ,” which are then sent to the other devices on the network selecting songs to play for every other individual that have the same characteristics.  The system only plays music that is already downloaded on the mobile devices.

Participants don’t even technically have to be together geographically. The technology will work over Bluetooth, the Internet, or cellular networks. Apple says the whole system will be downloadable in a single app.

Pulse, We Love…and Boutique Hostal Salinas are offering you the chance to come party at the We Love…closing fiesta with an all expenses paid trip to Ibiza, where you’ll be staying at the beautiful Hostal Salinas for two nights, along with tons of great other prizes with our We Love Pulse photo competition!

Earlier this week, we talked with Hostal Salinas owners Duesi Wolfmeir and David Phillips about why their incredible hotel is one of the most special places to stay on the island, along with friend and We Love…Director, Darren Hughes. In the interview, we not only got to discover much more about the history and serenity of Hostal Salinas, but wound up having a candid conversation on why We Love…remains one of the top nights of the island, DJ swapping, the VIP crowd, market oversaturation, and the uncertain future of Space. Read on for all the details, and at the end, find out more about how to enter and and all the great prizes you could win.

Pulse: You guys recently had one of the biggest bookings of the summer come through with Underworld. How did the night end up going? Did it meet or beat your expectations? Dave: It was a peak for everybody. We had a friend who has celebrating her birthday, and so it brought an extra push for our room so it was packed. We were happy with that. I actually booked myself on at the same time as Underworld! (Laughs).

Duesi: I went in for the last half hour and it was fucking brilliant.

Darren: It was a great show. And they were absolutely delightful. I worked with them once before for a festival maybe 10 years ago but never got to meet them. It was a difficult party in terms of floor numbers, I won’t lie to you. But they were so delightful; it spread this nice feeling around what would have been a very difficult party. So yeah, they were beautiful people to deal with, the whole team.

P: There’s more competition on the island than ever this year, yet We Love…seems impervious. Why do think that is?Darren: Hmmm. I don’t think it is. As with many other things on the island, you have your center, you core. Right now, what Ibiza’s known for is that high end thing. Blue Marlin, Ushuaia, not just them, but that’s the culture. Where as 12 or 13 years ago, it was at the opposite end of the spectrum. It had this reputation of being a San Antonio, beer drinking, Northern England, male dominated island. Both of which don’t do any good for us. What happens somewhere in between, is it changes. It’s a cyclic thing. It has it’s own way of moving on, you know? So I think we’re doing okay. Things aren’t easy, but if they were, everyone would be doing them. Which means it’s even more important to work with people that are your friends, that’s where the collaboration lies from with Lo Cura.

P: That being said, do you think things will eventually swing back in the other direction away from the VIP? Darren: I don’t know in terms of when or how, but it always does. It just does.

Dave: It takes a few years though. I arrived here in 1992, and it was kind of a quiet time on the island, though I don’t remember like that. But it built and built and built through the ‘90s. You had parties like Manumission, promoters come in, guys like Darren with Cream, and TV came…then it would level off, and another phase comes, internet comes, things like that come and change it. So this bubble of VIP, I don’t know if it will burst, because these people are rich, they’ve got loads of money, and that’s probably not going to change massively.

Darren: No, I don’t see that changing.

Dave: But what I think might happen here is that there are a lot of businesses here – restaurants and huge complexes – and they need a lot of people and a lot of money to work, and that could go a bit wrong.

Darren: The thing is, the expensive Champaign-drinking crowd, at the moment with EDM in America, Guetta and the Swedish House Mafia and Avicii – whatever – has given that Champaign crowd access in to dance music. But they don’t really like it. It’s just where they think they should be. And that’s what will change.

Dave: They could get bored of it. I think they’ll get bored of the hangovers and the headaches and the loud music, the lifestyle…the scene. And they might go back to what they know, go somewhere else. It might take a few years, but it probably will go in a cycle.

Darren: Well there are only two types of people: Nice people and not nice people. It’s like, if they’re rich, are they all not nice? No, probably not. For me, I remember when this VIP thing first started – this type of VIP thing – it was Puff Daddy. There was no one like him on the island, no people like him. I just remember he’d bounce up with his crew and take over the booth, I’d be so angry. But it’s happened, you can’t close the door.

Deusi: Paris Hilton is now a DJ of her own party! (Imitating Paris Hilton’s Pulse Radio interview), ‘What are you going to do tonight?’ ‘Yeah, I will play some records, make some mixes.’ (Everyone laughs).

P:In the same sort of regard, the ‘underground’ seems to be dominating the island this summer.

Dave: I don’t think it’s underground though. The underground is now the general fodder.

P:Exactly.

Dave: DC-10 and that kind of thing is partly responsible, but there’s a lot of artists over here that are not that deep house DC-10 thing (or) the trendy German Berlin stuff. It’s stuff that you guys (We Love…) have booked, Claude Von Stroke and the big bass line stuff, lots of new techno. I think there’s a lot of confusion with nights now with people who aren’t really versed in it, they don’t really know which to go to. There’s been a lot of cherry picking with ‘let’s have a little bit of that, let’s have a little bit of Cadenza, a little bit of Steve Lawler, let’s get a little bit of this, and just throw things out and see what sticks.’ There are nights that don’t really have a concept; it’s just a bunch of agent’s rosters, with no real concept to it.

Darren: There’s more than enough room for DC-10 and Circoloco, for us, and other good parties. A few years ago when DC-10 struggled with the whole licensing thing, I really was unhappy about it, because you really don’t want that place to go.

P: After doing what you’ve done for so long, are you still challenged by any aspects of your job? Dave: No, because of the people behind, the team. I mean Mark (Broadbent, musical director) is a huge music lover. He’s applied his trade now for quite a few years, and with his wife Sarah, his partner, it’s a family thing. I said it earlier, it’s especially important now, when things are difficult in a time of change, to feel confident in your friends.

P: Why do you think that helps so much? Darren: If you’ve got the right people around you, in good or bad times, it’s alright.

Dave: They’re the most organized promoters I’ve ever come across. They get things done when they say their going to do it, and you’re expected to do the same. It’s a red-hot organization behind the scenes.

P: There seem to be very few successful nights built directly around a big name DJ. In fact, this year DJs have more power than ever, playing for each other’s nights throughout the season. Do you see this as a good or bad thing? Darren: Bad thing. I saw Sven on at Ushuaia and I was like,’ what? Fuck that.’ I mean, there’s a bit of me as a promoter that’s a little jealous they’re that powerful now, truth be told, but the trendy techno based DJs, five or six of them, are all wiping each other’s asses.

Dave: I just find it odd. You would think that if you were aiming at people who are generally here for a week, who are going to spend this amount of money to see X guy, why does this guy play another day of the same week, in another club, for a fee? It might be a massive fee. But he’s just chipping away at his own audience. I don’t understand it.

Darren: What they’re doing is giving each other’s DJ bookings for free. So Richie will go to Jamie, Jamie will go to Richie, and there’s no money. Most of the swaps, that’s what goes down.

Dave: But they’re chipping away at their own base. I don’t get that.

Deusi: Bring somebody new in instead, maybe your friend from Chicago or Australia, not your friend from across the street.

Dave: I mean if the big guys have that much pull, they’ve got, I wouldn’t say a responsibility, but it would be nice if they could bring new people in.

Darren: And to be fair, that’s where Cocoon is failing, you know? They have not brought the next Dice or Ricardo through. They did it a little with Raresh, there’s a couple of things they’ve done, but not really. They used to do it. I mean early on, the first 5 or 6 years, they’d play around with shit. I guess things come to you so that you don’t really have to though. They got lazy. They just got lazy. They stopped looking. I understand Sven’s a DJ not a promoter, but Johannes (Goller), I’m surprised at in a way.

P: So what do you see for the future of We Love…? Darren: I just hope there’s a future and the club stays open. That Matutes, who runs everything in Ibiza, doesn’t somehow pull the wool over Pepe (Rosello)’s eyes and take it (Space) off him before 2016, and we can carry on.

Dave: Yeah, that would be a blow if that place goes.

Darren: Well it (Space) will go from Pepe to Matutes in 2016. There’s nothing we can do about it. I tell you what I was really happy about was Hard Rock. When I heard Matutas was going to turn Don Toni into Hard Rock (Hotel), I was happy about that, because I think this summer, they’ll realize they haven’t got it all their own way, and even with all the money they’re throwing at the DJs, the only one who’s really slamming it is Avicii. And who’d have guessed that Luciano would fall from the perch he was on to where he is now. So therefore, I’m now a bit more hopeful, really, about maybe doing something with him when he takes it, because it isn’t going to be all about Ushuaia, for him (Matutes) I mean. He just wants to build his portfolio. Build golf courses and the lot. (Read the first part of our interview with the guys here).
