Don't Miss: Supplement Facts Presented by Pulse Radio

Party Reminder! Tuesday, January 8th will be a night to remember, as “Supplement Facts Presented by Pulse Radio” lands in Mexico. This particular soiree, hosted in association with our friends Vessel in San Francisco, will unfold at La Santanera, and will truly be one for the record books. Check out their bios and some of their bext mxies below!

Headlining is label boss Guy Gerber, whose hypnotic releases have pushed both his solo career and label into the forefront of underground dance music. With close to 10 gigs over the next month, taking him from Russia to Mexico, he's in high demand, with sets that are consistently innovative and moving. Guy will also be closing out BPM with his "This is The End" party at Mamitas on January 13th, alongside Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson, Danny Daze, Lauren Lane, and Bill Patrick.

Bill Patrick is a core member of the Supplement Facts team, serving as their principle A&R. He also hosts the "Private Stock" radio show here on Pulse on the last Thursday of every month. He's a globe trotting DJ with a long history in the scene, a master of the art of spinning, and a man who is never afraid to voice his opinions.

The Martinez Brothers have been on a tear lately following a big release on Real Tone Records. Look for the New York natives to bring their brand of thumping, classic house to the table. The energy the real-life brothers have behind the decks is infectious, as evidenced by their great season of appearances at Circoloco at DC-10 in Ibiza.

Canadian born Heidi brings her jacking vibes to the lineup. A native of Windsor, Ontario, she grew up inspired by the Detroit music scene. Now living in England for 13 years, she has gone on to host her own residency show on BBC Radio 1 and series of parties called "Heidi presents the Jackathon." Her new label, Jackathon Jams, has released work from Maya Jane Coles and tINI, Miss Kitten, Alexis Raphael and Marc Houle amongst others.

Shaun Reeves needs little introduction as one of the members of Visionquest. His take on techno ranges from downtempo electronica to classic deep house, and he is known for constantly scouring the far reaches of space for the best hidden jams. A virtuoso producer in his own right, Shaun has become known for moving, mind-bending DJ sets.

UK bass, soul and pop producer SBTRKT has just released a new album on the Young Turks label entitled 'Live,' which as you may have guessed is a collection of live recordings, taken from two shows at London's Shepherds's Bush Empire last October, where the masked producer (real name Aaron Jerome) was joined by regular collaborator Sampha and the Heritage Orchestra.

The digital version was released yesterday on iTunes and a vinyl/DVD package will follow on February 25th which will be limited to 500 copies. In the meantime you can check out a segment of the DVD in the below video of 'Hold On' and 'Migration' being performed live.

For anyone who witnessed the brilliance of SBTRKT live in the flesh the past few days at the Field Day or Summadayze festivals, this album is sure to bring back some goosebump induced memories.

Fatboy Slim - Big Beach Boutique 5

Fatboy Slim
Big Beach Bootique 5
[Inertia]

There is no denying that Fatboy Slim is somewhat of an institution. Norman Cook gave us some of the biggest dance music blockbuster hits by way of ‘Right Here, Right Now’, ‘Praise You’ and the inimitable ‘Rockerfeller Skank’, safe to say FatBoy Slim is, and always will be, to paraphrase, kind of a big deal.

'Big Beach Bootique 5' is a recording from his hometown show in Brighton and is everything you’d expect from a Fatboy Slim live set; bodacious, four-to-the-floor, in-your-face dirty house tunes, but there is something about the selection on this live LP offering that seems somewhat out of touch. Featuring cuts from likes of Chuckie, Basement Jaxx and Nicky Romero in amongst his biggest bangers that he teases in and out of the mix, it feels like a set that lulls into predictability and as though he still rooted in the sounds of yore rather than select a set to challenge or even remind us why he was such a forerunner of the dance music scene all those years ago. Throwing in a brief interlude by the way of ‘California’ by Tupac seems a little contrived and dated, and a rework of (gulp) LMFAO’s “I’m In Miami Bitch” is just disappointing; rather than pushing the envelope, he’s gone for filler rather than killer.

That being said, watching the live DVD component puts it all into perspective a little more; once you get past the crowd shots of barely clad punters practically foaming at the mouth in what can only be described as an ocean of gurn, Cook seems more in his element than he has been in the past few years of performing (“trainwrecker” seemed to be a word popping up a lot when describing some of his sets in last five years); resplendent in a Hawaiian shirt and bare feet, he emanates the kind of energy DJs in their twenties only wish they could pull off during a two hour set.

Throw on BBB5 next time you’re entertaining, but don’t raise your expectations past a festival set designed to appease drug fucked punters.

The BPM Experience: Direct from The Playa Pt.1

Our intrepid reporting continues while we're at BPM festival! We'll be updating you regularly on the goings-on of this magical experience in Playa Del Carmen, so stay locked on Pulse for the latest. In the first part of this series, I cover my first two days, Jan 5th and 6th, from touchdown at the airport to sunrise.

When I arrived in Cancun International airport, the first thing that struck me was a feeling of deja-vu. The signs, incomprehensible to me for the most part, and vague musty smell in the air, reminded me of a country much further away: India. There is something exotic about the country so close to the US, something that recalls a much more distant sojourn then a quick hop across the border.

Or maybe I was just a Mexico virgin who got a little too excited about having his cherry popped.

Once I was ushered through immigration and customs with a multitude of forms, and bizarrely enough, asked to press a button that lit up a green "go" sign (what the cosmic implications or usefulness of that button is, I don't know...), I luckily found my baggage and headed to the exit. Seeing no other BPMers except for a few artists like Josh Wink and Dory being picked up with placards (thats the life), a good friend, also an artist, spotted me and invited me to join him in his own rental car. So we drove on, stopping at Mexico's version of Wal-Mart for necessary supplies (mainly cheap Tequila), and then their gorgeous house in Playacar, a resort near downtown playa del carmen. From there I was picked up by none other than Pulse's own Alex Fish for ride into the heart of the jungle for the mysterious and infamous Sacbe party. This party, proceeds for which go to charity, is a unique event and one of my reasons for coming down to Playa Del Carmen early. We can't reveal much about the event, except that an all star cast including M.A.N.D.Y, Shaun Reeves, Mr. C, and others rocked out amidst Mayan ruins in the heart of the jungle. It was a wonderful event.

Following this, many dedicated ravers went to Richie Hawtin's Enter party featuring Magda, but not I. I chose the high road and went to sleep after some amount of hanging around and staying up for no reason. It was a smart move - the No. 19 party at Mamita's was just around the corner (Saturday) and it was easily one of the best parties I've ever been to. Nitin was rocking the stage by the time I arrived and all I could think was "I've waited my whole life for slow, deep and sexy house music to catch hold with the masses...and now here we are." It was truly a wonderful experience to see hundreds if not thousands of people grooving to the soulful, deep, and beautiful sounds of No. 19. Derrick Boyd of Tone of Arc even did a live version of his standout cover "Goodbye Horses." But that wasn't even the end of it - Kenny of Art Department joined No.19 main man Jonny Glasgow and actually sang several verses of what must be some forthcoming tracks. The crowd was all one at the event - it was incredible how many people had gathered from different parts of the world to join forces and create an astounding atmosphere.

After a break to grab some food and rest, we rendez-vous-ed with Ataxia and Pulse's Ted Krisko at Coco Maya for the No. 19 Social Experiment official afterparty. With B2B sets incl. Kenny vs. Lee Foss, Jonny White vs. Shaun Reeves, and more (the announcer at one point said, "what is this, a boxing match?"), the vibe carried on strong from the day party. Around 6am, I caught the sunrise with two of my lovely roomates, Sarah Myers and her sister Elizabeth. The most unexpected surprise of all? While we were up on the rooftop of our apartment, the girls received a message with a picture of their new niece. Their other sister had given birth right at that moment, as the day's first rays trickled over our Mexican paradise.

Unfortunately, there's no update for Monday because I caught some version of Montezuma's revenge and spent the whole day and night in bed. But I'll be back and ready to deliver the latest juicy tidbit's of playa magic to you asap. Stay tuned!

Mark has always been known for a quality production output and a solid, yet understated skill behind the decks - 2013 sees the Fanciulli brother step the gears up, looking the continue the massive success of club favourites Sacrifice and The Tide. Ben UFO doesn't produce records. He is a DJ, and a very fine one at that. After spending the last 6 years helping to mastermind the output of infamous UK label Hessle Audio, the crate digger and selector remained pretty quiet on the mix compilation front, until last year when his Rinse mix exploded and topped many end of year lists. Now (and about high time in our opinion), Mr UFO returns to mix the latest installment of FABRICLIVE's flagship mix series; in celebration, Pulse have got a tidy competition to bag yourself one of two free copies of the mix, released on the 21st January.

Originally hailing from Ealing, Ben is regarded as a DJ's DJ, able to create an eclectic and exciting set that aims directly for the the dancefloor, without compromising Ben's unapologetic style that flits between house, techno, dub and everything in between. For FABRICLIVE 67, Ben includes the likes of Juniper and A Made Up Sound to Night Slugs' Jam City and house production legend Herbert. The album launches this Friday, alongside Hoya: Hoya and alternative electronica bible Sonic Router heading up rooms 2 and 3 respectively.

To bag yourself one of two copies of the FABRICLIVE mix, plus one of two pairs of guestlist entrance to the club this Friday for the launch party, email contact@pulseradio.net sporting the subject line "BEN UFO" to be in with a chance of winning. The successful entrant shall be contacted on the afternoon of Thursday 10th January. Good luck! See below for a full tracklisting for the mix, plus the full line up for Friday night.

Summafieldayze 2013 In Review

My previous experiences of Future Musicʼs events (although over half a decade ago now) had me envisioning a somewhat splendour of character-filled, jaw-chewing, buffed-up blokes and chicks in heels scampering around dusty fields, potentially to be seen in the scene, rather than shaking their hips and grooving their feet to their favorite artists’ musical delights. I must admit, this somewhat narrow perspective had been passed aside by the time I got to the gate and rightfully so as I was to learn from my day reveling the Gold Coast way.

With little expectations and a lot of dancing juice the idealistic weather welcomed us to Doug Jennings Park deep inside the coastal township. The police presence once again proved that lots of blokes in blue suits and a video camera could deter a bunch of happy go lucky young adults to have smiles on their faces as they anticipate the rhythms and bass-lines that would soon run through their veins. Instead some were searched, lots were questioned and tax payers’ money went to those stuck to the capitalistic rule, who would probably be reveling in their takings later in the evening (as many including myself insist on believing).

Inside the conglomerate of vibrational frequencies that ran throughout the venue, you could see nothing but adults letting out their inner kid, ready to have a good time. The mixed bag of stereotypical humans gathered to shake, to groove, to enjoy a musical experience braced by some of the worldʼs leading electronic artists. There was no aggression, no cause for concern, no pretentiousness, just a sunny day of tents filled with lights and grooving people (and lots of eye-roll-to-back-of-head-double-time).

In the sparsely-filled Cross tent was where my dancing boots first found their segment of earth to grind into, where Paul Rose, AKA Scuba, although not drawing much of a crowd to his mid- afternoon set, had a small party of people recklessly absorbing his grooves. I couldnʼt help but close my eyes and feel the atmosphere of Berghain run through my blood as Scuba technoʼfied the small crowd into fits of frenziness and during breakdowns applauded the crowd, somewhat thankful that those present were getting right down to his tuneage. Sticking to the very short one hour time slot proved difficult for Rose, in this instance giving a few shakes of the head to who I assume was the production manager when told it was time to wrap up. In a cheeky move, he let a breakdown run until he could give us one very last taste of deep, rolling techno.

Post Scubaʼs thump-filled hour, Carl Craig brought the now even smaller crowd into a synth-driven, treble-filled spook expedition which although beautiful did lose some of the energy of the tent. 23 minutes into his set with only about 16 beats of bass expelled I wondered about his choice of journey, given that he only had but one hour with which to indulge our senses. With Aeroplane playing in the sunshine just a short stroll away my chords were pulled in that direction where there was once again a small music-loving crowd; guys in dresses and the likes of such. Aeroplane’s tastefully selected, bouncy, deep basslines and vocalised poetry definitely created an even warmer atmosphere than was already abundant.

Maya Jane Coles back in the Cross tent as expected pulled a larger crowd and her full-sounding, somewhat spooky rhythmic house had arms flying in the air and smiles on faces galore. Layered, textured and awesomely danceable, the tent heaved. To follow, Booka Shade and their enlivening performance continued the flow of freaky frenziness, starting with the somewhat newer ʻCharlotteʼ and running through their hits with seamless, energy keeping tactics. Running behind schedule a bit led Booka Shade to only play for about 45 minutes, but it was 45 minutes of blissful dancing that left me and my fellow revelers in awe. Itʼs nice to know that tunes like ʻIn White Roomsʼ and ʻBody Languageʼ still fit perfectly into the festival scene some 5 years on from their initial recording. Having them blasted out on a blissfully soulful sound system allowed me to hear another 30% of the tune which had been absent from my memory.

As the day became evening, my dancing fizzled out to walking about the grounds, wherever my lobes wished to settle. Erol Alkan had a small crowd reveling, MIA had a full stage of dancing folk getting ushered off the stage and the Chemical Brothers’ tent was a heaving mass of lasers and lights, tweaks and peaks and mind-boggling warped-ness…all a bit hectic for this groove monkey. So instead Hot Chip enthused for a spell, with the highlight of the three tracks that I stayed for being the female drummer who donned a t-shirt that said ‘LOVE’. Damn straight to that!

Leaving with LOVE imprinted in my mind was the perfect way to end a thoroughly enjoyable day that exceeded expectations and let dancing shoes that had been hung up for a while get right back into the groove. Thanks Gold Coast, thanks Summafieldayze and thank-you fellow revelers. See you next year for more fun in the sun. Over and out.

Gold Coast loses Big Day Out

In recent news, Big Day Out organisers have revealed the Gold Coast is more than likely to no longer host the Queensland leg of the festival, due to the decision by Queensland State Government to redevelop the Parklands Showgrounds - the Queensland home of Big Day Out since 1994 - into an athletes’ village for the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The departure of the festival from the Gold Coast is a move that has outraged Queensland tourism bodies, according to The Music Network, as the loss of the famed and long-running festival will result in a major reduction in tourism for the area. Other Queensland cities vying for the opportunity to host the festival include Cairns, Townsville and the 365-acre Woodfordia site, although at this stage the future of the Queensland leg of next year's Big Day Out remains uncertain.

This year’s festival features The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Killers on headlining duties, along with Kaskade, Nicky Romero, The Bloody Beetroots, Crystal Castles, Pretty Lights, BT and Morgan Page representing on the dance side of things.

Vinyl Sales Hit A New Record In 2012

According to new figures put forth by Nielsen Soundscan and posted on Digital Music News, vinyl has once again shut down it's detractors and reached another modern-era record in 2012 by shifting 4.6 million units in the USA. Check out the graph below.

Granted the sales are more heavily in the rock field, but still, these new figures surely give weight to the argument that the format is far from dead. Perhaps in the electronic music world it's time is nigh, though? What are your thoughts?
