As we reported back in August, Zac Efron and Emily Ratajkowski will be appearing in a coming of age DJ drama called 'We Are Your Friends,' and we've got the first look.

Directed by Max Joseph, who's behind MTV's Catfish series, the film centers around Efron, who plays 23-year-old DJ Cole. With the help of an older “charismatic but damaged” DJ named James, Cole is on a mission to create the track that will take the world by storm. Cole then falls in love with James’ younger girlfriend Sophie and has to choose between love and the career he’s destined to have.

In this behind the scenes look, Joseph gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the set and cast, including a skateboarding Efron and his costar, Ratajkowski. Watch here.

Reuters reported last week that Pioneer was looking to sell its industry-leading DJ equipment business for around $570 million in order to focus more resources on its automotive electronics division, but Pioneer claims that this isn’t true. Reuters stated that Pioneer DJ has already identified a potential buyer and the deal was being finalized.

Pioneer Corp released a statement addressing the media that reads as follows:

We wonder if there is still something brewing over at Pioneer’s headquarters in Japan given that the denial is very brief and somewhat ambiguous.

Until now, Aphex Twin fans could only dream about all the equipment that Richard D. James has in his many studios. Another piece of artwork from his highly anticipated forthcoming album show a complete list of studio gear that he used in its production, broken down by track by track.

You may remember another part of ‘SYRO’s album art that included a breakdown of all the costs associated with producing, distributing, and promoting it.

While we doubt that this is everything that James has in his studio, it appears that it’s a solid list of the equipment he used to produce the album. A user on Reddit deciphered the graphic – check out the full list of gear below. 'SYRO' will be released on September 22nd via Warp Records.

North Coast Music Festival Dazzles Chicago

$

North Coast Music Festival celebrated its fifth anniversary this Labor Day Weekend in Chicago at Union Park. The three-day extravaganza consisted of over 50 artists across five stages. Each stage was labeled by a Chicago area code, with 312 and 630 being the big anchor stages. To out-of-towners, these might have seemed like arbitrary numbers, but it’s a subtle nod to the city that’s been hosting this event for the last half-decade.

Building up to Labor Day weekend, the forecast was looking scary. Rain was predicted all day, every day. It was touch-and-go for a few moments leading up to the kickoff but we were treated to a near-perfect weekend. North Coast has been branded as "Summer’s Last Stand," and we were given the right weather to match the season.

Credit: Aaron Engler

The North Coast Music Festival schedule was very cutthroat this year, and attendees were forced to make some difficult decisions when it came to performers. North Coast gave us a strong combination of EDM and hip-hop, but headliners for each genre were set to face off each night. The decisions were easy for some, but brutal for others.

Credit: Aaron Engler

The first night was a battle between stages for Alesso or Bassnectar. Bassnectar is a seasoned veteran on the scene, but the decision was made to see Alesso. I had not yet seen him perform in person and I wanted to see what he could bring. Due to the timing, this meant that other festival goers had to miss out on Bassnectar.

Alesso, the 23-year-old Swedish superstar, definitely held his own with the sea of EDM fans. The crowd stood in awe at the performance of his new single, "Hereos," and then went crazy singing along to an 'old' favorite "Lose My Mind.” This collaboration with Sebastian Ingrosso has been on my playlist for a LONG time and it was an absolute blast to hear. To enjoy this song live with everyone was a fantastic experience. By the end of the night the 630 stage was full of happy people re-energized for the parties ahead and ready for the remainder of the festival.

On Saturday, Union Park had significantly more people and the energy was even higher. One of the benefactors of this day was Adventure Club. They really left nothing on the table and played one of the best sets of this year. Before you even think to ask, they played their memorable remix of "Crave You" by Flight Facilities. This was one of the more interactive and just genuinely great songs of this weekend. The Adventure duo would fade the song at just perfect times, allowing the overwhelming number of fans to sing along through the buildup right before the big drop. During their set, the two also played their brand new song for the first time. It went unnamed, but if the crowd’s reaction was any indicator of this single’s future, it’s going to be a huge success. As is standard with every Adventure Club experience, it was a laser-filled and CO2-clouded party. The special effects did not disappoint and the duo were certainly among the most energized performers of the weekend.

Credit: Chris Monangan

Kid Cudi rounded out Saturday night representing the hip-hop side of the festival, but left some drama in his wake. During his “Pursuit of Happiness” performance, he fainted between the stage and the crowd gates just after signing a quick autograph for a fan. Security whisked him away and he later tweeted that he was alright, and appreciated the support. His performance seemed a little off, but he explained via twitter that he essentially ‘forgot to eat throughout the day.'

Ill do a better and make sure to eat properly on show days :) scouts honor!

— Scott Mescudi (@KidCudi) August 31, 2014

Sunday was a very different day than the rest. The crowd was arguable twice the size of the previous days, but with double the talent to match. Toward the end of the night, Wolfgang Gartner brought his refreshing electro-house into the mix. There had been a lot of dubsteppers and trance performers throughout the weekend, and it was a nice change of pace to have some Gartner. It was a thrill to be front and center (well worth the scorching temperatures) for this performance. Throughout the weekend, local news stations flew overhead to get some footage of the festival, but during Gartner’s performance the helicopters must have needed a few double-takes. The choppers made about four separate passes overhead during just the first half of his set. To see this show on the ground was one thing, but I can only imagine what these camera crews were able to capture from the sky.

At the end of the night the big dog himself, Snoop Dogg, put on one of the best performances I've ever witnessed. The man is a professional when it comes to his show, and at 42 he still performs with such passion. He came out playing the favorites, and even dropped in some Katy Perry, "California Girls." It was an entertaining change of pace to go from classic Snoop to a poppy beat, but you were hard-pressed to find anyone not enjoying themselves. Towards the end of Snoop’s performance, you could hear Dada Life across the park playing Prydz’s anthem, “Call on Me,” while the crowd sang along. It was an entertaining way to end the weekend, and I hope someone will get to work on a mashup!

Credit: Aaron Engler

Overall, The North Coast Music Fest had a great fifth anniversary. There was incredible talent, an exciting atmosphere, and gorgeous weather. These are the keys to success for any big festival. If there was anything to improve upon for next year, we’d really like to see more than two fill stations for water. It was fortunate that the temperatures weren’t too bad because the water lines were quite long. Lastly, the performer distribution could have been a little better. It’s always tough to match stages and times with all the big names, but it led to a lot of difficult decisions. If you really break it down it was a non-issue -- there were just too many amazing performers to see. It was memorable to say the least. I take this as a sign for more incredible things to come, and I look forward to what they bring back to Chicago next year.

Meet the Girls of Chinese Laundry

Last month Chinese Laundry began a new cycle of club nights, including two new weekly parties, plus two monthly events. BASSIC Fridays have taken off, with a number of local favourites already making waves, while LNDRY Saturdays are fast becoming an institution.

The changes have come as part of a brand new make-over for the Sydney club, which sees the return of Laundry's popular Garden Parties, plus a whole new music programme. At the centre of these changes are some fresh-faced residents and a brand new host. Pulse caught up with the new team to find out a little more about the Girls of Chinese Laundry.

Elinor photo Elinor_zpsc5905270.jpg

Elinor Williams

What is your role at Chinese Laundry? I am the host of LNDRY, generally making sure the club is running smoothly and the DJs are happy, which is a great role as I get to hear all of my favourite DJ’s set’s every week!

What is your first memory of electronic music? My Dad was a DJ so electronic music has always been a major part of my life. My most distinct memories are of being a young child on a Friday night in the UK watching Top of the Pops dancing around the living room with my mum to 90s house music whilst my Dad would be getting ready to go to whatever club he was playing at that night. I’m pretty sure this is the reason I love classic house music so much. I just wish I had my mum’s 90s rave moves to go with it!

What is the last record you bought? I bought the new Claude Von Stroke track, CaliFuture the other day – I love the splash of acid in it!

What can we expect from Laundry's spring lineup? There’s lots of exciting things coming up this spring, of course the John Digweed garden party is going to be huge! There’s also a few more big garden party announcements to come, as well as some killer line ups including John 00 Flemming, Butch and Tommy Four Seven in September, Jeff Mills in October and a few very special top secret shows. Expect BIG things.

KLP photo KLP_zps8aa89595.jpg

KLP

Who are you? I'm KLP, a Sydney based singer, songwriter, producer, radio host and dj.

How did you get into Djing? I first learned how to DJ on turntables. Friends years and years and years back would play loads of house on vinyl and we would go to a party in Sydney called Mad Racket. That was my first experience with clubs - it's a pretty left of field way to start.

Which do you enjoy more: Djing or broadcasting? I don't want to pick! ha ha. Broadcasting a radio show is amazing because the audience can reach to literally around the world. But singing live or djing is great because you have the crowd right there, dancing in front of you so the response is very immediate.

What can we expect from your residency? Tonnes of new and classic tracks to get you dancing and working up a mighty sweat. I might even pick up the mic and sing a few tunes as I go :)
Nine photo ninelives_zpsa58098a2.jpg
Nine Lives

Who are you? My name is Jac Frier. I'm 22 years old, and I'm a Sydney based producer/DJ

How did you get into Djing? I entered a DJ competition with my friend a few years back, we didn't win however a few months later I decided to get back into it. My eldest brother is a Producer/DJ and was running a night in Sydney last year with a few people. He decided I would play the opening set so I spent about three whole weeks preparing. It was a fun night but looking back it's pretty interesting how much my music taste has changed. From that night I started getting gigs here and there around Sydney and just under two years later, here I am! At the start of this year I started producing, so I'm currently focusing on honing my skills in that area and hopefully by the end of the year I will have a few decent tracks under my belt

Name 3 tracks you'll be playing at Chinese Laundry:

DVS1 - 'Black Russian (Original Mix)'

Cottam - 'Relapse (Cosmin TRG Remix)'

Beesmunt Soundsystem - Close to Me (Amir Alexanderâs Body to Body Deep Dark Excursion! Remix)

What can we expect from your residency? I play a mix of house and techno, usually depending on who is headlining on the night, how the crowd is reacting and also my mood. I'm always searching for new tracks every day, whether old gems or new releases.I read a quote once that made complete sense to me, yet blew my mind nonetheless - "A good DJ plays what the crowd wants to hear, but a great DJ plays what the crowd didn't know they wanted to hear". I try and remember this every time I play.

GG photo GGMagree_zpsc0e6cf85.jpg

GG Magree

Who are you? GGMAGREE the baddest kitty cat out!

How did you get into Djing? Djing kind of found me. I was at a party one night, didn't like the music decided i would take control of the decks after watching a 4min you tube "How to DJ" video and off i went.

Name your 3 biggest influences: Baauer, Flosstradamus and of course Diplo

What can we expect from your residency? A lot of Ass and Twerking from me and the patrons!

Matador: 'It’s always nice to win'

$

Last time we spoke with ENTER. resident Gavin Lynch, AKA Matador, he seemed to still be reeling from his blast onto the world stage. Now up for the DJ Awards in the Live Electronic Performance category alongside the likes of Ame, Disclosure, Bonobo and Recondite, and with a fresh Essential Mix to his name, Matador seems much more accustom to his success. Though never one to rest on his laurels, Gavin continues to tour heavily and hit the studio in his new home of Berlin every chance he gets, with a long-anticipated artist album set for a tentative spring 2015 release date, according to its author.

We caught up for a quick conversation with the Irish techno producer to talk his ENTER. residency, partying and food on the White Isle, his DJ Award nomination, and his Essential Mix.

You’re now an ENTER. regular. Has Ibiza played a big part in your career over the years? For sure, this is my third season at ENTER., and it’s got better and better with every year. ENTER. has been an amazing team and family to be part of, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Have you spent much time partying as a punter on the White Isle? Yeah, myself and Nicola came to island for many years every summer for the standard 2 week experience! To be back on the island playing at one of the biggest parties is a very special thing.

You’ll be playing alongside Gaiser at ENTER. next week. What’s the dynamic between the two of you? How do you play together? We'll play an hour each, everyone thinks were doing some sort of DJ back-to-back thing, but that’s not the case. Sure, you'll see something different – we’ll play different stuff from our usual set. See, it’s quite rare we play one after another as 'live acts', but when we do there's a pretty electric vibe!

You did the Essential Mix alongside Gaiser this summer. Were you pleased with the reaction? Big-time, it was something that’s been on the list for many years, so to be able to tick that off was a 'back of the net' moment!

Last time we spoke to you, you had just moved to Berlin – how have you found it there? It’s almost a kind of pilgrimage for electronic artists. Has Berlin inspired any more creativity in terms of production? It’s a great city, I only wish I had more to explore it as I'm only home a few days a week, and when I am, I'm in the studio.

Do you have any releases in the pipeline? Yes, just finished a bunch of new work, coming soon…

Earlier in the year you mentioned the possibility of producing an album – has there been any progress on that front? Before summer 2015!

You’re nominated in the electronic live performance category alongside the likes of Guti, Kink and Recondite at the DJ Awards – how does that feel? I’m amongst some very good company, that in itself says enough.

Are awards like this important to you? Sure, it’s always nice to win.

You used to be a chef – have you got any favourite eateries in Berlin and Ibiza that you can share with us? Good grub at Lips, and of course The Fish Shack.

Finally, what’s next for the rest of 2014 and beyond? Touring, writing, and performing!

Matador is nominated in the Electronic Live Performance at the 2014 DJ Awards, which take place at Pacha Ibiza on September 22nd.

Ibiza Closing Party Preview 2014

All good things must come to an end, including the Ibiza season. Luckily, we get some of the biggest and best bashes to make up for it. The list of closing parties is extensive to say the least, with a huge number of huge events crammed into a couple of weeks, so we've got a comprehensive selection of the can't miss parties you need to consider before the season is over.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

Amnesia

Together Closing Party – Tuesday 23rd September

Together has been somewhat of a mixed bag in terms of musical programming, with UK foundations and a blend of all things bass music and some of the accessible sides of house. The closing party will see the Main Room taken over by chart invading drum and bass giants Chase & Status, Sigma and Netsky, whilst completing the line-up is B.Traits and a special guest who’s yet to be announced.

Over in the Terrace the eclecticism goes yet further, with house selectors EatsEverything, Justin Martin and Waifs & Strays supporting the in-your-face style of Fatboy Slim.

Cream Ibiza Closing Party Part 2 – Thursday 25th September

The giant of Ibiza, this larger than life trance and EDM night sees the 20th season finale bringing trance legend Paul Van Dyk to the main room, with the Mixmag Terrace presented by Super You&Me with Benny Benassi and Laidback Luke. Euphoric moments and lasers will be plentiful.

Music On Closing Party – Friday 26th September

This is bound to be a big one. Early morning sunrise sessions on the Terrace are the norm at Music On, so we can certainly expect one last massive blow out as Marco Carola’s party comes to an end for the season. Having partied at Music On until past 10am this season, there’s always going to be the possibility of an extra-long session. Don’t forget your sunglasses.

Cocoon Ibiza Closing Party – 29th September

Sven Vath and Cocoon have provided some of the most special moments of the season, providing the island's premier early morning techno sessions. The closing sees Sven take to the Main Room alongside Adam Beyer, who has had a huge season with Cocoon, Henrik Schwarz and Mathias Kaden.

Amnesia Closing Party – Saturday 4th October

Possibly the most exciting of all the closings on paper with (take a deep breath) Carl Craig, Eats Everything, Joris Voorn, Joseph Capriati, Luciano, Maceo Plex, Ricardo Villalobos, Seth Troxler and tINI all gracing the bill. Add a huge chunk of daylight partying on the Terrace and we've got the prospect of a monumental party. The opening lasted until after midday, this time we're looking to go even further.

Benimussa Park

The Zoo Project Closing Party – Saturday 27th October

The Zoo Project has continued to be a firm favourite day party this season, providing the stage for underground artists who you're unlikely to see anywhere else on the island. The UK's Maribou State will be headlining the closing alongside the full array of Zoo Project residents. Quality music, sunshine and a perfectly relaxed atmosphere are the order of the day.

Booom

Suara Closing Party – Wednesday 24th September

Cat-loving Coyu returns to Booom for the last time this season. Be sure to catch the Catalan alongside the likes of Pleasurekraft, Tube & Berger and more.

Glitterbox Closing Party – Saturday 27th September

A change from the usual house and techno sounds is refreshing, so when Glitterbox entered the fray with heaps of feel-good disco spirit, there were smiles all round. The final Glitterbox disco extravaganza in the suitably plush surroundings of Booom will include highlights on the line-up such as Dmitri From Paris, Joey Negro and Late Nite Tuff Guy

Defected In The House Closing Party – Tuesday 30th September

Defected was the first party we hit way back in May and now it comes to an end for the season with a selection of the summer’s mainstays. Guti will be present and ready to lay down some funky grooves alongside a host of regulars including Noir, Nick Curly, Oliver $ and Sam Divine.

DC-10

Paradise Closing Party – Wednesday 24th September

Paradise has enjoyed a particularly strong season in 2014, with more special Terrace and Main Room shows than ever before as the party continues to grow and mature. The line-ups have paid particular attention in bringing top quality underground talent to the White Isle and the closing is no different. The huge line-up so far will include the likes of Dixon, Cajmere and KiNK as well as Jamie and the usual Hot Creations crew.

Circo Loco Closing Party – Monday 6th October

Of course, the line-up won’t be revealed for a while yet, but we know exactly what to expect from Circo Loco. The Opening Party was mammoth, packed full of the most exciting artists and all the DC-10 regulars. Expect to see the residents in full-force in what will be a line-up showcasing the world’s preeminent underground talent.

Ibiza Rocks

Ibiza Rocks Closing Party – Wednesday 17th September

Ibiza Rocks have been offering solid alternatives to the standard Ibiza dance floor fare for years now. Indie kids Bombay Bicycle Club will be treating the San Antonio crowd to some live music to mark the end of another successful season for Ibiza Rocks.

W.A.R.! Closing Party – Friday 19th September

Although Ibiza Rocks provide alternative sounds, in W.A.R.! they also cater to those looking for some more electronic leanings. The season finale will see Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe join forces along with Friend Within, Doorly and Anushka.

Pacha

Flower Power Closing Party – Tuesday 23rd September

Seeing as Ibiza was built on hippy subculture, it's only right that Flower Power is experienced at least once before the end of the season. Get your best ‘60s hippy attire out for this extravaganza of peace, love and nostalgia. The soundtrack is strictly ‘60s, ‘70s and '80s rock, soul and disco - a refreshing change from the thump of kick drums and heavy bass lines. Dress up, have a few drinks and have a sing along.

Insane Closing Party – Friday 3rd October

John Digweed and MK are two veterans from vastly different backgrounds, with vastly different musical taste, but the two have played alongside each other on a host of occasions this season. The pair return to say goodbye to the summer along with Dennis Ferrer who has been a mainstay at the party this summer.

Solomun +1 Closing Party – Sunday 5th October

Solomun +1 has been a great success this season, with the big German bringing in a host of top guests to play alongside him. The closing however will just see Solomun hit the decks on his own for an all-night session delivering his brand of chunky melodic house.

Ibiza Rocks House Closing Party – Monday 6th October

Ibiza Rocks brought some of their house party spirit to Pacha, whilst representing a strong selection of British talent. The closing sees Basement Jaxx, George Fitzgerald and Doorly hitting the decks.

Privilege

Privilege Closing Party - Friday 3rd October

Although the line-up hasn't been confirmed yet, the world's biggest club is sure to stage an enormous summer send-off, with Main Room and the Vista Club set to host an extensive array of artists. The opening was a big one, rolling through into the next day comfortably, so expect the same and more.

Sankeys Ibiza

Flying Circus Closing Party – Friday 26th September

Talk of high quality house offerings from Audiofly, M.A.N.D.Y. and Martin Buttrich should whet the appetite for this Friday night shindig.

Magna Carta Closing Party – Saturday 27th September

Magna Carta promises a selection of fine underground heads on offer with dubby selections bound to be plentiful with acts such as East End Dubs, Samu.l and Chicks Luv Us & Medeew.

VIVa Warriors Closing Party – Sunday 28th September

Steve Lawler’s unstoppable force of a party has been a huge success this year and with three rooms open to accommodate the huge popularity, sheer madness is sure to ensue. Lawler will be joined by a special guest in the basement whilst Mathew Jonson will bring his live show to the Lab.

FUSE Closing Party – Tuesday 30th September

FUSE had big competition from Carl Cox and Defected, but they held their own as standard bearers for truly underground sounds on the White Isle. Enzo Siragusa’s FUSE round off a massive summer of Tuesday nights at Sankeys, with the main man Enzo joined by Julian Perez and the residents who make the party what it is. Be prepared for some raw energy in the basement.

Tribal Sessions Closing Party – Wednesday 1st October

Tribal Sessions is somewhat of a chameleon, with Detroit luminaries, contemporary chart house players and Berghain heads mentioned in the same breath when talking of line-ups. For the closing, this breadth of taste will be manifested via Cadenza– the likes of Argy, Mirko Loko, Cesar Merveille, Michel Cleis and Gianni Callipari will appear as well as a special guest...we wonder who that could be?

CUFF Closing Party – Thursday 2nd October

French purveyors Amine Edge & DANCE crack out the G-house lean for one last night, with bonafide UK garage star, DJ EZ.

Next Wave Closing Party – Tuesday 7th October

Ricardo Villalobos’ visit to Sankeys early this season went down a storm, this will be no different as he’s joined by Romanian power trio [a:rpia:r] (Raresh, Petre Inspirescu and Rhadoo).

Sankeys Closing Party – Wednesday 8th October

As Sankeys celebrates 20 years in the game, this is nailed on to be one last huge party for Sankeys and for revellers on the island. The line-up so far includes Sankeys favourites Duke Dumont, Amine Edge & Dance, Shlomi Aber, DJ Sneak, Sidney Charles, Just Be, Jozef K, Andy Baxter, Manu Gonzalez and some very special unannounced guests. With it being part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, however, we suspect whoever else is announced will make your mouth water.

Space

Carl Cox – Music Is Revolution Closing Party – Tuesday 23rd September

If it wasn't already in the diary, Carl Cox's closing must be pencilled in after Loco Diceabsolutely smashed Space alongside Coxy for Dice’s birthday takeover at We Love… This will only be Dice’s second appearance on the White Isle this season, adding that last touch of extra-special sentiment. Not to be missed.

Kehakuma/Elrow Closing Party – Saturday 27th September

This combination of Spanish fun and bombast with deep underground austerity has been an interesting one this season that has often seemed a litte mismatched. Each party in its own right is brilliant, however, and with Elrow you can guarantee wild entertainment without a shadow of a doubt. Fritz Kalkbrenner mans the decks in the Discoteca to soundtrack the brilliant circus-like madness of Elrow, whilst Kehakuma will host Levon Vincent and Trevino for some true underground quality.

We Love… Closing Party – Sunday 28th September

A huge and long-running British favourite, We Love… brings the big guns for the closing. Chart-topping Rudimental will be DJing along with James Zabiela, Gorgon City, Bicep, Skream, Paul Woolford and Ben UFO. Undeniably some of the biggest artists the UK has to offer.

ENTER. Closing Party – Thursday 2nd October

Richie Hawtin’s mind-bending techno extravaganza has been one of the biggest nights on the island for the past few years, bringing a forward-thinking and bespoke experience to White Isle revellers. Berghain heavyweight Marcel Dettmann will join Richie in the Discoteca whilst Tale Of Us, Maya Jane Coles and Nina Kraviz feature in the huge Terrace line-up.

Space Closing Party – Sunday 5th October

One of the biggest line-ups and an absolute must-not-miss. The bill includes some genuine giants of dance music including Carl Cox, DJ Tennnis, Josh WinkDeep Dish and Disclosure. The car park will be open, making the party a truly huge event.

Ushuaia

Ushuaia Closing Party – Saturday 4th October

The luxurious outdoor haunt will host Marco Carola all day long, a rare occasion to see the Italian away from his home on the Amnesia Terrace.

Once again, Marco Carola joins Hot Creations co-boss Jamie Jones for what's sure to be one of the summer's biggest events.

Along with Carola, tonight sees Dirtybird honcho Claude Vonstroke, up and coming duo Dungeon Meat, Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey, Paradise resident Robert James, and rising star Patrick Topping.

Cassy: 'I’m thankful that there’s always changes happening'

When I finally get UK-native and global expat Cassy Britton on Skype for a chat, she’s taking some much needed downtime at her home in Ibiza. When asked if it’s a “much needed vacation,” to which we both laugh, she replies, “As if Ibiza could be considered a vacation.” But for Cassy, a DJ and producer who has spent most of her life jumping between Amsterdam, London, Vienna, Berlin, and beyond, a half-year stay in Ibiza is as close to a vacation as it gets.

This weekend she's set to Play Sankeys Manchester for VIVa Warriors with Steve Lawler and Nick Curly, so we caught up with Cassy to talk about moving people with music, embracing change, artistic therapy, and the magic of Sankeys.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

How does it feel to be celebrating Sankeys’ 20th anniversary among such esteemed artists like Steve Lawler and Nick Curly? It’s a privilege! It’s an honour that they would think of me for this gig...and 20 years is a milestone to be celebrating! I’ve played with both of them before.

You’ll be playing as part of Steve Lawler’s Viva Warriors – what are you a warrior for? What is something you’ll always rise to the occasion for? If you look at the world and you’re an observant person, then you’ll inevitably be a warrior of some sort. Hopefully you’re the good kind of warrior though. [Laughs] But I think everyone stands for something, so maybe you can call that being a warrior. Maybe standing for your ideas makes you a warrior.

Are you a lover or a fighter? Both. I think I’m both. Anything too one-sided is boring! Obviously you can’t always fight but you can’t always agree either. You won’t always have the same opinion as everyone else.

Share with us your favourite Sankeys memory over the years, whether as a clubber or as an artist? Every time I’ve been, I’ve had such a good time playing, and now that the club has been rebuilt with a new setup, it’s so nice. I haven’t spent so much time there as a clubber, but every time I’ve played, the gig has been so much fun.

Do you remember your first time playing there? I was just trying to think of that but actually no, I can’t remember [laughs]! It was a long time ago.

For our readers who have yet to grace its dancefloor, tell us a bit about what makes Sankeys so special? I guess it has its tradition. It has certain energies and certain vibes that when you walk into the club, you can feel it immediately. It’s very fetching, the way it’s set up. You become enthralled and it’s so easy to get moving and dancing.

For you personally, does how you play your set depend on the crowd, on the vibes, on how you’re feeling, on the venue? It’s a mix of those things, for sure. I never know what to say because I’m not sure until I get up there. It’s an of-the-moment thing, it depends on the energy in the room and how I feel and how I’ve prepared. It all goes together.

Since you’ve lived in so many cities around the world, does it feel like coming home when you play in the UK, particularly at a mainstay like Sankeys? Manchester doesn’t feel like home, but it definitely feels familiar. I love it up north in the UK, everyone is super friendly and has great energy. I was born in England, but I’ve only really lived in London and not for very long. I’ve spent most of my time, like you said, living elsewhere, so England doesn’t really feel like home, no.

Does anywhere really feel like home in a physical sense, or are you a “home is where the heart is” kind of girl? There are some places that feel like home, definitely. Places that feel very familiar or where I feel very at ease. England is great and I love going there but the weather is so heavy! The older I get, the more I like nice weather and I start to really see the difference that nice weather makes.

Despite very much being a “child of the digital era,” so to speak, you seem nostalgic for a simpler time. Are we losing sight of where we started in dance music? No. I mean, there are so many changes happening all the time, that of course I could name some people who have lost sight or who are losing sight. There are also people who never had sight to begin with [laughs] but I’m not losing sight, no.

Do you think those kinds of changes are inevitable with any creative field? I’m thankful that there’s always changes happening! We wouldn’t have development otherwise. You can’t be afraid of change – it takes time for things to develop in a good way. Maybe it takes a negative turn along the way, but that’s how you grow. I’m not afraid of any of this.

You seem to resist stagnation – you’re not restricted to a certain crew, a certain label, a certain city, even a certain sound. Is there anything that will ever tie you down? You know what? I’m actually looking forward to settling down soon! The way I’ve been living costs a lot, and it takes a lot out of you. It’s tiring! Being on the move all the time – not just DJing every weekend but living here for three months, going somewhere else for three months – it takes it out of you, you know? It’s nice to stay put all the time, to not have such a hectic schedule.

Do you think that desire to settle down is growing with age? I was settled down, too, before, but I didn’t like it. It comes and goes in phases. At the time, being settled wasn’t what I wanted for myself but my life is different now. I think it has less to do with getting older and more to do with the way I am now that I’m older.

You’ve talked previously about not trying to be a missionary with your music. It’s funny because everyone I talked to about this interview had the same thing to say about you: that you give back so much with your music and your presence. Maybe you’re a natural missionary? Oh, that’s sweet. A natural missionary [laughs], that’s great! I think music just speaks for itself. The people that make these tracks, they spend so much time and love and energy. There’s nothing much left to do except play it with that same amount of love and energy. We’re just up there trying to do justice to the tracks we’re playing, to make them shine.

Do you think that by nature of being music practitioners, DJs are providing some kind of emotional or therapeutic service to fans and listeners, or is that kind of thinking taking it too seriously? No, no, no! You’re definitely rendering a service. You’re a servant to a cause. People come and pay for what you’re doing. It doesn’t stop with the music, it’s about the experience. So definitely, in that way
you have to be involved, and you have to take it seriously. People are there for you, for this moment.

Needless to say you’ve come a long way since your early days doing vocals on “Music Takes Me Higher,” which has become something of a classic. Despite how long you’ve been involved in the scene, does music still take you higher? Music is the only thing apart from friends, family, or loved ones, that still takes me higher. It always takes you higher, it always takes you away.

Being on the dancefloor can definitely be an emotional experience for me, and you’ve mentioned that it often is for you – that you want to touch the crowd or move them in some way. What kind of music moves you? I guess that in a physical way, I can be moved by anything. I can dance to all sorts of music. I can enjoy hip-hop or Elvis Presley or whatever. I can be easily moved in that way, but to move my whole being, that is more difficult...that’s even more. Certain songs, certain genres take it a step further for me, where you know, your whole being is moved. That takes something special.

Sankeys opens on Friday, September 12th with a 5-hour set from The Martinez Brothers at Tribal Sessions, and Cassy will be playing VIVa Warriors at Sankeys Manchester on Saturday, September 13th alongside Steve Lawler, Nick Curly and System 2, with Oli Furness and Music Is Love in Spektrum. Fantasma is a unique and diverse set of local musicians who along with Spoek Mathambo include traditional Zulu instrumentalist Bhekisenzo Cele, forefather of Bacardi House sound DJ Spoko and psychedelic rock guitarist Andre Geldenhuys. Maintaining a distinctly South African flavour, Fantasma drives an electronic pulse and forward-thinking futuristic vision with their sound.

The fresh and talented electronic rap duo PHFAT is shaking up the South African music landscape with their “homemade” electronic mish-mash rap sound. With influences ranging from glitch hop and punk to rap and folk music, Smooth Mike and Narch are best known for their current blow-out hit single ‘Lights Out’, which play-listed on more than 12 radio stations across the country. The prolific pair have been busy: In 2011 they released ‘Dinosaur Blood’; ‘You are going to Die’ in 2012; and most recently the 17-track full-length album, ‘Happiness Machines’.

La Familia Opening Party at Ushuaia Ibiza: In Review

$
0
0

After a number of shows in partnership with ANTS at Ushuaia, Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli kicked off with the first of four shows as they boldly branch out on their own with La Familia, happening every Sunday in September.

The ANTS and La Familia parties were still very much ANTS affairs – with giant scrapyard ants, dancers and production sticking closely to the ANTS theme. However, with La Familia’s break away show the party came into its own, showcasing their own unique production.

On the whole, La Familia was more stripped back than ANTS. On stage, a city skyline formed the backdrop and there were a number of nods towards a retro feel. The DJ booth was adorned with a sign reminiscent of an old school theatre marquee, an old street lamp stood beside the booth, and the sparkling outfits, feathers and white gloves of the dancers gave an extra sense of the nostalgic and historic production to the party.

Musically, similar paths were trodden as well, with Chicago house legend Derrick Carter serving up an array of solid house music. As with many of the old school heads, his sound has become heavily influenced by contemporary music and many of his selections aired towards the big room tech-house side of proceedings. In the relaxed Ushuaia surroundings the plentiful nature of the big vocals and solid bass lines went down ideally.

As Carter proceeded to serve up a high energy set, full of jacking percussion and touches of acid, Voorn and Fanciulli took to the Ushuaia stage and picked up on the energy left by Carter with huge kick drums and an all-round big stage feel. Celeda’s ‘The Underground’ provided joyful accessibility as more bouncy tech sounds were accompanied by the obligatory jets of flame, smoke, sparkling bursts of fireworks and showers of confetti.

Patrick Topping’s completely ubiquitous summer smash, ‘Forget’, rang out across the poolside area, inducing the most excitable reaction of the night amongst the crowd. A remix of ‘Benediction’ garnered a similar reaction as the pair continued to provide the huge tracks – there were smiles all round.

Sparkling dancers swung on trapeze swings whilst Voorn and Fanciulli continued to shape their easy-going brand of tech-house.

Ushuaia certainly delivers a different option to clubbing elsewhere on the island, bridging the gap between a party and a concert. For casual music fans visiting Ibiza and going in search of bombastic spectacle, then Ushuaia is the place to be. It’s also refreshing that parties with a decidedly more underground musical feel such as ANTS and La Familia are given the chance to spread their wings in such a fine arena.

If you’re looking to be visually impressed with a decent helping of house music making up the sound track, look no further than Ushuaia and La Familia.

Kicking off with a commercial for Zedd’s Shave N Rave, the just released trailer for HARD Day of the Dead is hilariously spooky and is getting us pumped up for the festival. Called “The Last Mustache Ride,” it tells the story of “The Terror Mustache,” which wreaks havoc around the city of Los Angeles tearing up the iconic Hollywood sign, getting into food fights, and terrorizing residents along the way. Best of all, it features some of your favorite DJs, who will take part in the event.

HARD Day of the Dead is set to take place this Halloween weekend on Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd at Fairplex in Pomona. Headliners include Knife Party, Pretty Lights, Diplo, deadmau5 vs. Eric Prydz, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Bassnectar and many more.  View the full lineup here.

This isn’t the first time HARD has put together a festival trailer of this quality – be sure to check out last year’s edition featuring some of the usual suspects.
