The Warehouse Project hits We Love... at Space Ibiza: In Review

$

The Warehouse Project has been one of the leading lights in the UK’s clubbing scene for a number of years now, rapidly becoming Manchester’s flagship party during the run of events from September until New Year’s Day. After becoming such a giant in the world of dance music it was only a matter of time before the brand expanded to Ibiza. Sunday saw The Warehouse Project join forces with We Love… for a huge Sunday extravaganza at Space.

Nicolas Jaar occupied the main slot in the Discoteca, taking his position at his own DJ booth high above the typical spot – it was a grandiose statement. Jaar looked down upon the crowd from his high pedestal, as he delivered his slow motion, slow burning take on electronic music. His selections featuring that slow down tempo groove which is so instantly identifiable with Jaar.

Jaar’s sound is certainly absolutely unique to him, and despite the slow tempo, he still managed to get bodies swaying and fists pumping. His best selection of the night, however, came when he served up Inner City’s bonafide dance floor anthem ‘Good Life’, possibly one of the most uplifting tracks to ever hit the floor.

Two of the UK’s finest producers of recent years, Joy Orbison and George FitzGerald then took to the decks following Jaar’s performance, delivering bass heavy house and techno tunes, which possessed that extra vitality which translates so easily to the dancers. The punchy dark synth sounds are unique to their British sensibility, such as highlights including Dark Sky’s ‘IYP’ and Scuba’s ‘Solitary Confinement’. The pair continued to lay down some of the boldest and most energetic music of the evening in their short but sweet hour and a half set whilst the comfortably busy crowd showed appreciation by the bucket load.

Over in the Terrace it was deep house legend Kerri Chandler in the booth. Kerri’s sound has developed into something much more in keeping with today’s contemporary house sound, but the man will never forget how to lay down the groove for the revellers. The crowd remained hugely motivated throughout, as they bobbed with relentless energy to the succession of jacking dance floor fare.

Once Kerri had finished, it was time for a somewhat unlikely pairing on paper – Richy Ahmed going back-to-back with Eats Everything. You could never have any doubts about a musical chameleon such as Eats Everything, as he bounced off the Hot Creations mainstay, serving up bumping house tracks with heaps of fun and enthusiasm. The Terrace was teeming with every part of the dance floor filled with joyful bodies. The likes of Butch’s ‘Soul Motion’ and Chris Tietjen’s remix of ‘Bitter Sweet’ by KiNK were two key tracks that had an abundance of arms in the air. As with most back-to-back to sets the intensity between the pair rubbed off on the crowd hugely – the atmosphere was electric.

Of course, there must be a special mention to Ibiza Spotlight for their final hosting session at El Salon – the room that drags you in so easily with the lure of disco hits and in depth conversations that are just so damn tempting.

Watch: A Drone’s Perspective of Burning Man

Have you ever wished to experience the magic of Burning Man from a bird’s-eye view? Drones have been used at many events to capture a different angle of the overall experience, and despite your feeling about the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, it’s pretty cool to see the festival from this perspective.

Set to Tycho’s “Awake,” the video, courtesy of Fest 300, showcases several aspects of the Burning Man experience from the numerous art installations, art cars, and camps to the vast desert landscape and the diverse group of inhabitants who make their way to Black Rock City for a life changing week. Enjoy!

How to 3D Print Your Own Daft Punk Helmet

Halloween will be here before you know it and if you feel so inclined to dress up as DJ duo Daft Punk this year you have a few options – purchase Party City’s tacky costume, spend a fortune on Etsy, or if you have some time (and even more money) to spare you can create your own custom helmet using a 3D printer.

You’ll need “a neopixel strop, a Trinket 5V minicontroller, slide switches, a JST extension, a lithium polymer battery, and a battery charger… and of course, a 3D printer, solder, and PLA filament.”

Adafruit Learning System is even sharing the open-source code and a bunch of diagrams so you can customize the helmet to your specifications. Check out the video below for a summarized version of the process and view the complete guide on their website.

Adventure Club Takes Over Chicago

On Saturday, after North Coast had wound down for the night, I made the trek over to the Bottom Lounge for an after party headlined by Adventure Club. Being roughly three blocks away from Union Park, this had to be one of the most convenient parties to attend. After the second day of a festival, it can be draining to press on past close, but when your after party is a stone’s throw away from the festival grounds you have no excuse!

While the opening DJ was warming up the decks, I walked in to see dozens of Coasties slumped along the walls of the venue resting their feet. The spirit was willing, but the legs were weak from a long day. However, the moment Milk N Cookies stepped up to the stage the exhausted festival goers got back on their feet.

Milk N Cookies played a great opening set to the night. One of the highlights came when they took to the mic to make an announcement, “This is what we listened to in the 90’s, and we’re ready to bring it back!” They quickly transitioned into a Backstreet Boys remix and this got the remaining wall-sitters back on their feet. As we moved to the end of their set, Milk N Cookies played their new remix of Sum41’s “Fat Lip.” It took the crowd a minute to catch the tune, but the song was followed by a roar of approval. Finally, it was 12:30am and the wait was over. It was time for Christian and Leighton of Adventure Club to take the stage.

Adventure Club killed it. They did an amazing job earlier in the day performing on the 630 stage, so expectations were high. What really stands out in an intimate indoor music scene is how immersed you can become in the space. Lasers, lights, and smoke are so much more intense indoors, and Adventure Club was able to completely take advantage of this in their performance. They brought their own handheld CO2 cannons into the space and completely clouded the room. Floodlights would flash illuminating the fog flowing across the crowd. Towards the end of the night, Christian took it upon himself to dive into the crowd and (successfully!) surf the cheering fans. There were no Aoki-style mistakes here, and he made it back behind the decks without a problem.

What a night! Bottom Lounge proved a memorable place to be. It was hot and exhausting, but absolutely electrifying! I look forward to the next time the duo makes it to Chicago.

Avicii Cancels All Upcoming Performances

It appears that Avicii has decided to cancel all of his future performances due to growing concerns about his health, including his appearance at TommorowWorld later this month. Dancing Astronaut reports that he will not perform for the foreseeable future after wrapping up his summer residency at Ushuaia in Ibiza.

The news follows the cancellation of his Miami Music Week shows back in March due to a gall bladder issue that required immediate medical attention. It seems that Avicii’s busy touring schedule this summer has not allowed him the proper time to recover. There has been no word from the DJ himself yet, but keep your eyes open for more details as they become available.

CWS - Untitled EP

CWS
Untitled EP
Struments Records

9/10

Already well-respected as solo producers, Cardopusher and Nehuen join forces on the 'Untiled EP' under a new moniker CWS (pronounced “Classicworks”), which sees them continue to spread the gospel of analogue, rave-influenced techno madness.

'Untitled 01' is a grinding warehouse jam, drenched in distortion and '90s hardcore attitude. A scratchy, overdriven TB-303 provides the basis of the groove, relentlessly wibbling and wobbling its way around pounding, distorted kicks and claps. The addition of some classic rave stabs (anyone born in the '90s will recognise them) and choppy vocal samples help to give the track a welcome cheeky edge which balances out the gritty seriousness of the acid line and drums.

'I' blends old school electro flavours with industrial drone/noise aesthetics, creating a unique track that has dancefloor appeal but isn’t just your standard sound system fodder. Jacking, syncopated beats and a quirky bassline are offset by a gravelly vocal sample and incessant washes of grainy noise, making the track confronting and somewhat difficult to listen to, but rewarding if you can stick with it.

On the flip side, the music heads back into to ball-tearing, ravey acid techno territory with 'Untitled 02,' which feels almost like a “Part 2” of its A-Side compatriot. Slightly cleaner and more precise sounding than Untitled 01, but no less energetic and aggressive, Untitled 02 is another excellent hark back to a time that many wish had never ended.

DMX Krew offer up a chunky breakbeat interpretation, recalling the days when artists like 808 State ruled the dancefloor. With everything you need in a breakbeat rave track, from distorted syncopated rhythms to eerie pads, evil stabs and of course loads of acid, DMX Krew’s remix is a fine addition to an EP that harks back to the golden years.

Watch The Trailer For The Upcoming Film About Daft Punk

We already know lots of details about 'Eden', the new film tracing the explosion of French electronic music in the '90s. We even know the actors who will be playing Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, aka Daft Punk. But today we finally get a glimpse of the film via the first official trailer.

As Your EDM points out, 'Eden' is based on the experiences of director Mia Hansen-Løve’s brother (and co-writer), Sven - one of the pioneering DJs of the French rave scene in the early 1990s - and his friends (Daft Punk). Sven's fame as DJ outfit 'Cheers' with his best friend is short lived and descends into drug addiction, money mismanagement and relationship issues, while Daft Punk, as well know, go on to change the course of pop music.

Check out the trailer below which features the French robots' hits 'Da Funk', 'One More Time' and the more recent 'Within' from 'Random Access Memories', and plenty of partying, drug use and general awesomeness.

Video Fail: What A 'Model DJ' Does Behind The Decks

$

Dance music's rise to stratospheric levels over the past several years has led to some amazing things for the scene, but also some not so amazing things. One of those would without a doubt be the rise of the so called 'model DJ' phenomenon.

A hot chick spinning tunes...what's the problem, you ask? Well if you like a bland, pre-recorded, synch-button inspired Traktor set that involves a lot random knob-twiddling and cue-button tapping for no apparent reason, then nothing. But if you're a fan of DJs with actual skill and talent, then Colombia's DJ Natalia Paris is probably not for you.

DISCLAIMER: Pulse does not have anything against female DJs who can actually DJ.

Joseph Capriati Joins Marco Carola at Music On: In Review

$
0
0

Marco Carola is on fire this season and Music On at Amnesia Ibiza, so we returned to one of the summer's biggest parties for an early morning session with the Nepolitan selector.

Music On has become one of the preeminent chic hangouts for the international rich and famous, with the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Paris Hilton and P Diddy frequenting Amnesia for the Friday night techno extravaganza.

Musically, it’s not what you may expect the celebrity elite to go for, but with the ‘underground’ there often tends to be undeniable air of cool in wafting about. The island has had that allure for many years, but certainly in recent times the A-listers and the European social elite have seemed increasingly inclined to immerse themselves in a party, which is ostensibly, ‘all about the music’ – music which, for the most part, is tough dance floor fare.

Whilst I didn’t spot any celebrity glugging from enormous bottles of Grey Goose, the party was packed to the rafters as usual, all there to see the night's curator take us on a journey from start to finish, certifying the notion that Music On is ‘the place to be’ on a Friday night on the White Isle. One of the most internationally trendy hotspots, for sure.

Stood in the middle of the crowd you’re surrounded by the European style elite - it’s all about tattoos, monochrome and retro sunglasses on the Terrace dance floor.

Behind the decks the Neapolitan don, Marco Carola oozed nonchalance as he delivered his unique brand of raw tech-house and techno. Recently he has become increasingly fond of the biggest tracks and even bigger build-ups, pushing the crowd to the point where the only thing that will suffice as a sign of pure appreciation is a sea of hands in the air. Musically it’s uncomplicated, but it’s the delivery that makes Carola the DJ he is. The music he played hit the spot with everyone – from the growling bass lines and shuffling rhythms full of groove to the vocals that very occasionally creep in to grab yet more attention. It’s always a slow build journey towards those sunrise hours that revellers usually dread, but give the Amnesia Terrace its magical feeling.

Over in the Main Room, the diminutive Joseph Capriati was laying the kind of gritty tech-house and pumping techno that suits the dark room so perfectly. The room was full from front to back, certifying the rapid rise of Capriati and his increasing ascendance into the upper echelons of techno.

Maceo Plex’s ‘Crossfade’ remix went down a storm, as it has done all season, before Capriati settled into more of his accessible yet pounding techno in the vein of close friend Adam Beyer and his Drumcode label.

It’s hard to stay away from the Terrace for too long though and as always, Carola was keeping a straight face for the most part, reserving hands in the air for his biggest of selections. Carola's biggest moments – the early morning moments – come when he’s liberally cranking the knobs on his delay effects like a mad professor before dropping a huge bass line, sending the throng of party-goers into hysteria until the party ends in the Ibiza morning light.

The intensity built towards this point steadily, but powerfully, as Marco found himself in the zone to compelling effect. He remained a picture of calm, sunglasses on and concentrating intently on delivering music which controls your body, coaxing the dancing out of you. There was nothing forced, people’s bodies and minds were just induced into this uncontrollable dancing state.

It was wild, it was busy and Carola did what he does best – caused ecstatic reactions with consummate ease.
