Marco Faraone is one to watch out for. He's had a productive and successful year as a regular at VIVa Warrior this summer in Ibiza, playing at some of the world's biggest nightclubs and festivals like Panorama Bar and Tomorrowland, and releasing on labels like Drumcode and Desolat.
We had a chance to catch up with Marco during his busy schedule to chat a bit about how his relationship with Steve Lawler and VIVa began, some highlights from his European tour, re-releasing his 'I Will Wait' album, some of his lesser known musical influences, and what he has in store for the fall. Check out his all vinyl Pulse Loves... mix below and keep an eye out for details about his upcoming US tour.
Pulse Loves... VIVa MUSiC. You’ve been featured several times at VIVa Warriors at Sankeys in Ibiza this summer. How did your friendship with Steve Lawler begin? Well everything started really easily. I meet Steve personally for the first time in 2012 when we were playing together in Barcelona during Off Sonar Week at the East Ender festival on the same stage. I had been following him for years. When i started DJing he was already in the music scene and I played many of his productions. I still remember an amazing EP he released on R&S Records in 2009 called 'Kalimba' including an amazing remix by Shed. I actually just told him about that a few days ago in the car, when we were driving to Sankeys. I still play it sometimes. I have it on vinyl.
When we meet for the first time, I just recognized him and introduced myself, and I still remember that he was very surprised and gave me a lot of compliments about my music and what I was doing. In fact, before that moment I remember seeing his feedback a couple of times for my music and I think that he also played some of it before we met.
Then last year he asked me to make a remix for his own label, VIVa Music, and I was so honored by the request. I have such a big respect for Steve, what he's accomplished so far and what he is still doing. It's been such a pleasure to collaborate with him. He also invited me to play at his party for the Warriors. So, really I feel that our friendship started very naturally. We didn't meet because of a friend or someone in common. It was like when they say "being at the right place at the right moment."
This summer Steve's agent sent me a request to play at all VIVa Warriors on Sundays in August. I was performing in the basement for the closing set after him. During our dates in Ibiza we spent more time together. Steve is a really friendly and a humble person and this is probably one of the reasons he has been such a staple in our scene over the years. As you can imagine, I am thrilled with my season in Ibiza. Each Sunday was such an incredible experience, and hopefully I return next season.
Pulse Loves... Europe. You’ve also been touring a lot around the rest of Europe recently. What have been some of your highlights from this year? For sure, one of the best gigs I did was my set at Panorama Bar in Berlin. I really love that club. I also played in some other amazing places like Cafè d’anvers in Antwerp, Toffler in Rotterdam, Tenax in Florence, and Amnesia in Milan. There are so many good clubs in Europe.
I also performed in some amazing festivals like Tomorrowland and Extrema Outdoor in Belgium. Can’t forget Barrakud Festival too in Croatia, and of course the amazing gig I did at Watergate in Berlin with my Moon Harbour family. I feel that this year is the best one I have had so far in my career.
Pulse Loves... Festivals. We loved your set at Tomorrowland! What was it like playing at one of the world’s biggest festivals? It's something you can't describe in words. It was a magical experience for me as I have been a DJ for many years and working hard to grow and do good things. It was very satisfying achieving something that was a dream yesterday and suddenly it's come true. Like most producers, when I started I had so many dreams about the future and the things that I wanted to achieve and now some of them have come true.
I'll tell you something. A few years ago, I didn't expect to play outside of my hometown! Things just happen if you work hard for it. It gives me the motivation and energy to chase my dreams and keep working.
Pulse Loves... New Releases. So you recently re-released your album 'I WIll Wait' with new remixes. Can you please talk to us more about the recording and writing process behind the original album? How did you pick the remixes? The birth of this album comes from the desire to experiment, trying to find a way outside the lines, embodying different musical shades with new sounds and rhythms, and assembling these with the purpose of a new musical idea in which House, Techno, Pop, and Electronic live together in one atmosphere. The purpose of producing fourteen tracks is not only led by the need for a new musical project but it is the symbol of an important bit of life - sensations and emotions, sad days, departures and new arrivals, fun delights, waiting for a new experience, or for a new love...
The album represents fourteen tales of life. It included the collaboration of a special friend Piegaja, the young Tuscan man who walks together with me in this path through feelings, experiments, fun, trusts and new research, and so the obvious outcome has been a great synergy. It's been almost a year since the release.
It was presented in June 2013 at Panorama Bar in Berlin and was supported by important national and international DJs and producers like Laurent Garnier who are considered icons of the electronic music world. After this excellent outcome, I decided to release some remixes of the most requested and popular tracks, but for such an experimental album I chose very special remixers to surprise people. That’s why I selected amazing producers like Jay Haze, Locked Groove and Dana Ruh - they brought the remix somewhere very special.
Pulse Loves... Art. What was the inspiration behind the unique artwork and title? At the time I was producing it, I met my girlfriend which had a really good impact on my musical inspiration, and she was 99% of my album inspiration. I asked her if she wanted to design the cover representing something that connects love, nature, the time running and the figure of the woman as you can see on it. At the end, everybody in life is waiting or believes in something. Like me for example, I was waiting for love or the right moment, the right inspiration during my travels, something that would make me realize my dreams. That’s why the album is called 'I Will Wait.'
Pulse Loves... Touring. We hear you have an upcoming US tour this fall. Is there anything about it you can share with us? I’m really excited about it! It’s my first “real” tour in the States. I've played around in the past but not as a tour! The music scene in the USA is really growing and every major city seems to have a good party and a different vibe. I really can't wait to be back there.
I am really excited to play in Output/The Panther Room in Brooklyn as I have heard such amazing things. I'm also really looking forward to being back in Miami, this time at The FDR at Delano.
Pulse Loves... Bucket Lists. Are there any cities/venues you haven’t played yet that are high on your list? I would love to play in New York, and I'm really excited to play there. But like a lot of producers, I dream about playing in Detroit because this is the place where most of the underground Techno scene was born, and I am very curious about the vibe there.
Pulse Loves... Inspirations. What are your musical influences? Since I was a kid I have been listening to all kinds of music. My father was a radio DJ back in the 80’s so he was already collecting vinyl and music of many genres. For example, I was listening to legendary electronic producers like Jean Michel Jarred since I was ten years old, with a good background of listening experience as a result. This has also influenced my DJ sets; I play a little bit of everything, from deep to Techno to House and even great classics. Sometimes I even play old dubstep records and hip-hop. It's important to fit the right record in your set at the right time and surprise the audience with it.
Pulse Loves... Mixes. Tell us a bit about the exclusive mix you made. What was your approach? The set was done 100% vinyl. I wanted to do something special and experimental for Pulse Radio. I didn't want to do the same podcast with a computer - you know just pressing play and mixing. I like to think people appreciate to hear the "live mix," and maybe the error of the DJ which is somewhat hard to find with all the laptops around. Just to be clear, I have never refused the technology. I have tried to play with everything, Tractor, vinyl, CDs, external effects, etc, but at one point it's good to play that one way the excites you, and vinyl does that for me. As I say, "It's the risk of the direct, but it's real." It's not the "perfect" mix made with sync, but it is special.
I like to say that I'm really eclectic. I don't like to catalogue the music in one style and make the same wave. I always strive to do dynamic sets. It's important for DJs to fit the right record at the right moment, surprising the audience. I started DJing with hip-hop and drum ’n’ bass, listening to music like Run DMC and 2 Pac and that's how I learned to play with turntables.
I started DJing when was 14, with the influence from my father like I mentioned before. Now I’m 26, and through the years I evolved and grew up moving from that point to different styles of music but never forgetting my roots. I still have my background in mind, so even I can never anticipate my DJ sets... I always prefer to let the music speak more than just a few words.
Pulse Loves... The Future. What else do you have in store for the fall? Well I have a lot of upcoming solo projects. I have had so many releases in 2013, including my album and various EPs on lables like Desolat and Drumcode. I have my mind set on creating a new album soon, hopefully this winter. Since the begining of the year I have released a lot. For example, my track "Overvision" on the Desolat sampler, and the new EP out on a new vinyl only label "On Edge Society" called "EAtna" which included remixes by Trucante aka Audio Injection and Andre Kronet who are two of my favourite Techno producers at the moment.
I have a new remix for my friend Sven Tasnadi on Moon Harbour, and I’ll also mix the new winter compilation on the label soon which includes a new track. I have many plans for the winter. A new remix for the amazing duo Groove Armada wlll be out in a few weeks, and I can’t wait for that! I also have a big surprise coming soon!! Don’t worry, something hot is always coming.
