Ultra Imposes Age Restriction for 2015

Ultra is the next festival to implement age restrictions for future editions of the festival, perhaps in response to the recent drug deaths at events around the country and the fact that it was almost kicked out of the city of Miami following an incident where a security guard was almost trampled to death by a crowd of gatecrashers.

Starting next year, the new age requirements will be 18+ to attend Ultra Music Festival. An official announcement hasn’t been made yet, but recent flyers have advertised presale tickets with the new restrictions.

The text next to the 18+ stamp reads: “The safety and security of our attendees, artists/performers, and personnel are our utmost priority and concern.”

NAOME - Belly Of The Beast EP

NAOME
Belly Of The Beast
My Favourite Robot Records

8.0/10.0

Known for his hard hitting, no nonsense techno DJ sets, American selector Andrew Grant has been an integral part of DC-10 since the early days. Naturally, he branched out into production, these days often working with partner Lomez on dubbed down techno and house, releasing on Andrew’s label, EDEC Music Outlet. However, his long talked about alter ego project, NAOME, has finally come to fruition, with a forthcoming LP due on My Favourite Robot Records, and it was well worth the wait. The first taste comes with the ‘Belly Of The Beast’ EP.

The original mix is a down tempo, leftfield slice of electronica possessing a sensibility, which seems to hark back to ‘80s and ‘90s electronic music. A driving synth line, drones and sparse percussion allow the track to chug along as the eerie vocal of Sutja Guiterrez floats above the mix. The echoing vocals lend an airy melancholic tone to the whole EP.

Jori Hulkkonen uses layered trance-like synth textures and clean-cut piano on his version of the tune, which underpin the track’s sultry mood. This is the most dance floor ready version on the EP, with a more conventional four to the floor rhythm, yet it still maintains the subtlety and soft touch of the original. The vocal is employed in the same way as its original counterpart and allowed room to breathe to create a moody cut, with an obvious nod to the groovier side of proceedings.

The second of three reworks is the Villanova Fretless remix, which again sees another moody and contemplative rework. The tempo remains on the slower side of things as minimalistic percussion is combined with a thick bass line and a simple yet effective echoing loop. Subtlety is important again as Fretless urges the track towards a considered crescendo, injecting a sublime air of euphoria.

Villanova’s Sigma remix sees another minimal four to the floor beat, this time served up with a manic amalgam of crazy bubbling and squelching synth sounds that drive the track’s trippy feel. Filtered white noise washes over the mix manically as Gutierrez’s vocals are used more sparingly, allowing the unusual sounds to push to the forefront.

Each remix serves nicely to provide tracks that are more dance floor ready, but it is the original that remains the most striking, with its sparse and moody form of electronica. It will be interesting to hear what else Grant conjures up on the full LP, due out soon.

Have Sydney's Lockout Laws Curbed Violence? The Jury's Still Out...

A Parliamentary Inquiry into measures to reduce drug and alcohol related violence was held at the NSW Legislative Assembly today. Submissions came from a number of organizations, including the Bureau of Crime Statistics, the City of Sydney and NSW Police. The hearing canvassed a variety of issues related to drug and alcohol violence, discussing a range of initiatives and measures which have been introduced by a number of different groups. The inquiry focused primarily on the effects of lock-out legislation. A parliamentary inquiry into measures to reduce drug and alcohol related violence on the streets of Sydney was held at the NSW Legislative Assembly today. Submissions came from a number of organizations, including the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the City of Sydney and NSW Police. The hearing canvassed a variety of issues related to drug and alcohol violence, focusing primarily on the effects of the NSW Government's conroversial lockout legislation.

Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Fuller spoke in detail about the intelligence his department had gathered since the lock-out was introduced. Mr Fuller concluded assaults in the CBD has decreased in the period since the lock-out came into action. Assistant Commissioner Fuller claimed his officers had observed an overall decrease in intoxication in the Kings Cross precinct, arguing “the lock-out has been a positive move towards a safer environment”.

A report from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research however could not confirm this view. Don Weatherburn, the Director of the Bureau stated it was too soon to make any substantive conclusions about the efficacy of the lock-out legislation. He would not be drawn on whether the latest raft of legislation had been effective in addressing the problems in Kings Cross. With only four months of data, Mr Weatherburn said he was not yet able to make any concrete claims to evaluate the lock-out’s achievements.

Mr Weatherburn did predict a decrease in violent assaults, but he could not attribute this to any legislative change. Using data from previous years, Mr Weatherburn argued violence decreased with a change in the seasons, as overall traffic in Sydney’s entertainment districts declined in the colder months. This point was reiterated by City of Sydney Representatives, and the Assistant Police Commissioner.

Representatives from the City of Sydney outlined a number of issues with the lock-out legislation. Using the controversial Newcastle model as evidence, representatives claimed it was reduced trading hours, not the lock-out which proved the most effective measure in reducing violence. While the CoS were satisfied that Sydney laws had reduced violence, they expressed concerns over costs to business and tourism. The representative asked that laws be reviewed after 12 months.

The majority of the hearing focused on alcohol related violence, however steroid and amphetamine violence was a major concern for some committee members. The Committee Chairman grilled the Assistant Commissioner over police incompetence in drug testing violent individuals, alleging police assessment of drug use in assaults was not sufficient. The police commissioner countered, stating an assailants drug intake had no bearing on police charges.

Disney Goes up Against Deadmau5 and the mau5-head

Deadmau5 and Disney may finally be going head to head.

As Rolling Stone reported back in April, Disney began investigating a trademark registration filed by deadmau5 over his logo.

Now the children's entertainment giant has taken it one step further, as Joel Zimmerman found out upon returning to Toronto from the iTunes Festival in London.

landed home to some interesting news: looks like Disney officially just filed in opposition of my trademark... lawyer up mickey.

— deadmau5 (@deadmau5) September 3, 2014

According to TMZ, Disney filed docmuents on Tuesday to block Zimmerman from a US patent on his trademark, which he's already established in 30 other countries, because the "logo is too similar to their famous Mickey ears."

Zimmerman has since voiced his opposition to the claim via Twitter, also bashing Disney's 'Frozen' and commenting on the general irony of the situation.

Disney thinks you might confuse an established electronic musician / performer with a cartoon mouse. That's how stupid they think you are.

This one-day music conference offers attendees an impactful, industry experience featuring local and international speakers, panels and ‘on the couch’ interviews. Aimed at music students, artists, professionals, media and anyone keen on learning more about the industry, the public is urged to purchase their tickets quickly as space is limited. They’re priced at a reasonable R195.00 so that the conference is accessible to everyone.

Delivering the keynote addresses are Terry Weerasinghe – Beatport’s Vice President of Music Services, along with SA’s maverick radio pioneer Gareth Cliff.

Founded in 2004, Beatport is the largest music download store for DJs in the world, with Terry being one of the most connected and well-respected figures in dance music. Based in Berlin, Terry will address delegates on the boom in dance music worldwide and how Africa can tap into it.  He’ll also outline how the digital retailer is transitioning to a new future whilst highlighting how labels, artists and others can participate in building a global community that makes music available to a broader audience and deepens the relationship between artists and their fans.

As one of the most recognised radio DJ’s on the African continent, Gareth Cliff will talk about the future of radio in South Africa and his experience launching his own online radio portal, CliffCentral.

Recognising the need for national events that facilitate networking, knowledge-sharing and artist empowerment, the conference comprises various panel discussions aimed at encouraging engagement and collaboration all aimed at building the industry.

Whilst the full agenda is still in development, two panel discussions have been announced:

The Management Vacuum in the African Music Industry: Understanding the management role, what can be done to improve and develop better management skills and how do we attract more high calibre professionals into the game.

Confirmed panelists include: Graeme Gilfillan – Nisa Global Entertainment (PTY) Ltd, Zakes Bantwini - Head of A&R Sony, Raphael Benza - AKA Management, Refiloe Ramogase - Dreamteam Management, Franie Kotze - Clear Entertainment, Amaru Da Costa – Soulistic.

Soul Candi records will present a panel focused on ‘Taking South African House Music Global’, touching on themes such as how to compete in a highly competitive international electronic music industry, realizing our true global potential, and empowering artists to prepare them for international success.

Confirmed Panelists include Black Coffee, Allan Nicoll - Soul Candi, Nomndeni Mdakhi  - Edits Communications (Kalawa Jazzmee), DJ Clock - AM-PM Productions, Jullian Gomes, Kavir Magan – Pulse Radio

The popular ‘on the couch’ sessions will include global speakers, two of whom are renowned international booking agents from the UK’s Coda Music Agency; Paul Buck and James Whitting.  Coda looks after Imagine Dragons, Ellie Goulding, Bastille, Rudimental, Disclosure, The XX, The Vaccines, Bon Iver, John Newman, Jay Electronica, Jamie Woon, Faithless, Macy Grey, Mr Scruff and new teenage sensation Jake Bugg, just to name a few.

With indie rock festival Vodacom In the City (VITC) taking place at neighbouring Mary Fitzgerald Square on the same day, it’s likely that the international contingent in SA for VITC and Rocking the Daisies will make themselves available to attend parts of the conference too.

Seed Experiences, the company behind VITC, Rocking the Daisies and a host of other top festivals, recognized the need to support the industry that supports them.   By partnering with Black Mango, the founders of Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference, the two parties created Breathe Sunshine Engage.

“The African music industry is one of the fastest growing music industries in the world but the continent still lacks the skills and network of our international counterparts. Through our Breathe Sunshine conferences we aim to address these challenges and put South Africa on the map as
a global music hub for African music,” comments Trenton Birch, founder of Black Mango. “With strategic partnerships with Kenyan Music Week, AFRIMA (All African Music Awards - Nigeria), Reeperbahn Festival (Germany), Europe’s largest music conference and CJM (USA), we have opened up an international network with the world’s top global conferences,” concludes Birch.

The team has taken their international alliance one step further by being invited to represent Breathe Sunshine South Africa at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival in September where they will host two panels and a showcase celebrating 20 years of democracy.

Of course all great initiatives need great partners, so big thanks to SAE Institute and Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) for their support.

The Martinez Brothers, Luciano, Cassy & Nicole Moudaber Takeover Carl Cox at Space Ibiza: In Review

$

While Carl Cox may have had a well deserved night off from Music Is Revolution at Space Ibiza, the likes of Luciano, Cassy, The Martinez Brothers and Nicole Moudaber made sure the party blasted on last  - and boy did it ever...

With Luciano’s presence looming over Space for one night only, Cadenza heads Argy and Mirko Loko were involved on the warm-up duties. The Terrace was pretty much empty on arrival, but it didn’t take long at all for revellers to be drawn in by the thumping sounds of the Argy. His driving tech-house sounds sound-tracked the steady trickle of dancers until the Terrace was rocking by 1.30am. Keeping the groove very alive and filling the dance floor with vitality, Sonny Fodera and Bontan’s ‘Reach Out’ stands out as one of the more memorable selections.

Over in the Discoteca, the other Cadenza face, Mirko Loko, was laying down some rough and ready grooves, which were perfectly suited to the cavernous main room. Fat kicks and skipping rhythms were the ideal fare for the build-up of pace. The sounds of Gerd’s ‘1 In The Morning’ caught the room’s attention undoubtedly, and even at this early stage the atmosphere was full of excitement.

After this suitable warm-up, the infinitely likeable Cassy stepped up to the plate and proceeded to push out an excellent selection of techno, which sounded all the sweeter blaring from the Funktion Ones.

As a former Hard Wax employee in Berlin, we know Cassy has impeccable taste, but this showing was just what we needed to hear from Cassy. Thunderous kick drums, scattered percussion and the odd vocal thrown in just for good measure on tracks like Delano Smith’s ‘Hypnotise’ and Jerome Sydenham’s ‘Seed’ made the set one on the most pleasurable you’ll hear on the White Isle. Her selections proving to really get the sparks flying as the crowd anticipated Luciano’s arrival.

Meanwhile the Martinez Brothers were doing their thing as they know best – get the party jumping like few others can. Bouncing off each other, and the crowd, the pair continued to lay down some infectiously groovy cuts whilst looking like they were having the time of their lives as always.

As the teeming Terrace bounced and swayed with vitality, DJ Sneak could be seen in the background. Before long he was at the decks for an impromptu back-to-back with the Brooklyn brothers. Mad acidic lines burst from the speakers as the trio stepped things up a notch. Tough break beats with chest pounding bass pulsed out onto the dance floor and more acid bubbled away.

As with most back-to-backs it was an intense back and forth display, with each selection inducing a room full of arms in the air. It was a particularly hard set from the Martinez Brothers when you think of the groovy DC-10 Terrace sets that they’re so well known for. This hard edge was typified by a pure analogue techno stomp, complete with rasping hi-hats and a thudding kick and Lil Louis’ classic ‘French Kiss’ to close things out before handing duties over to Nicole Moudaber.

Nicole brought what you’d expect to the party – a series of layered techno and tech-house cuts, full of pulsating bass lines. The draw of Luciano in the Discoteca proved very tempting for a lot of the Terrace crowd as the numbers thinned and crammed into the main room, but Moudaber kept the energy flowing with an impressively cohesive journey of peak-time dynamism. I can’t help but think that her big-room sound is obviously more at home in the Discoteca, but she served up the goods nonetheless, with Maceo Plex’s ‘ENTER.Space’ hitting hard.

The chance to see Luciano at Space however, was evidently a hugely popular prospect as I squeezed my way onto the dance floor. Luciano’s name was emblazoned on the huge LED screen behind him as pure energy pervaded the room and dancers filled every part of the floor. Two guys even couldn’t resist the temptation of jumping up on the podiums, only to be swiftly returned to the floor by security and replaced by the actual dancers strutting their stuff.

Luciano was coming to a room full of revellers fully prepared and ready to lose themselves in the party and his set exploded into life from the very first track – a relentless booming groove hit the party-goers full on as the Chilean toyed with huge build-ups and delivered energy by the bucket load. You know the Swiss-Chilean is happy when he busts out his trademark head-down whistle and clap moves. With that amount of electric energy spreading throughout the room the feeling is nothing short of infectious. It was a triumphant performance from a man who is certainly returning his focus this season.

The guests proved with conviction that Coxy’s absence was well and truly covered.
