“Club Kid” Killer Michael Alig Released From Prison

After serving 17 years in prison for the murder of friend and drug dealer Angel Melendez, “Club Kid” killer Michael Alig has just been released from prison. Alig’s rise and fall in the ‘90s New York City club scene served as the inspiration for James St. James’ biography ‘Disco Bloodbath.’ The book was later adapted into a film in 2003, the cult classic ‘Party Monster’ featuring Macaulay Culkin.

Alig plead guilty to manslaughter in the death of Andre ‘Angel’ Melendez in 1996. According to testimony, Alig’s friend Robert ‘Freeze’ Riggs beat Melendez to death with a hammer after an altercation about an unpaid drug debt. After this, Alig helped Riggs dismember and dispose of the body in the Hudson River.

Alig has been working on a memoir called ‘Aligula,’ and remained active on Twitter throughout his prison sentence. Since his release yesterday, he has been keeping the world updated on his happenings and readjusting to today’s society.

Since so much has changed in the world in the last two decades, James St. James penned an open letter to Alig to help him adjust to 2014. The letter begins with, “Boys are cuter in the 21st century. And dicks are bigger. These are fact. If you don’t believe me, spend an hour on Tumblr. Another odd thing: EVERYBODY has killer style now. Kids in Peoria are as fabulous as the kids in Williamsburg. It’s all rather dizzying, and kind of depressing. When everybody is fabulous, nobody is.” Read the full letter here.

This Sunday, May 11th, our friends at Babël New York are celebrating an incredible year of music, good vibes and great parties. The massive one year anniversary party will be held on the second floor and terrace of the legendary Bowery Hotel. The event lasts all day, from 2pm until midnight.

Babël New York launched at Marquee last May, and has since served as a home to a creative community centered around music, arts and design. The weekend starts off on May 10th at the always-fabulous SoHo House and finished strongly with a full day of festivities at The Bowery Hotel on May 11th.

At The Bowery Hotel, Babël is collaborating with Whitewall Magazine and Blackbook to celebrate the inaugural NYC Downtown Fair. The Downtown Fair is a new modern and contemporary art fair produced by the ownership team of Art Miami. Close to 600 artists from more than 35 different countries will be on display at the fair from May 8th to 11th, located on 68 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street.

Renowned French artist JR will be hosting the event and per usual, there will be plenty of talented DJs providing the musical soundtrack with Berlin’s Okersounds, We, Nadav Vee & Vanjee, Julio & Holosound and Nicola Zanatta manning the decks.  Come down to take part in the celebratory festivities as Babël enters its second year.  The future is bright!

Droog: 5 Years of Culprit

Culprit is turning five and is celebrating properly with a series of label showcases across North America. With successful parties already thrown in Chicago and Los Angeles, Culprit is keeping the momentum going with three more events this month in Panama City, Albuqurque, wrapping up in New York at Verboten on May 31st, with more stops in the works.  We had a chance to catch up with label owners Droog amidst the tour to chat about building the Culprit brand, some future releases we can look forward to on the label, some of their favorite moments from the last five years, and what they have in store in the coming months including a gig at the ongoing APEX tour's Los Angeles stop.

Firstly, congratulations on five years of Culprit! Since its start in 2009, has the label evolved the way you’d imagined or has it taken some interesting unexpected turns? A bit of both, I suppose. We didn’t have a detailed five-year plan in the beginning, but we had a few goals in mind, of course; releasing nothing but quality music, creating a particular feeling and vibe around us, and spurring a bit of a movement that was distinctly Culprit. Generally speaking, those things have come to life, but we’re always open to possibilities of something unexpected - keeps it interesting.

Culprit has played a huge part in shaping LA’s underground scene. What initially inspired you to start the label? Was it more of a creative venture or were you hoping to fill some sort of void in the city’s music scene? The label’s genesis was in the parties we’d been throwing in LA at that point, a few years of trying to do something fresh and interesting in LA musically, through our parties. Very quickly we sensed that the cumulative creative energy of people who came and played for us and their excitement about the fact that LA was now a place for our kind of music – the best way of capturing that, the most lasting way, was to start a label as an outlet for it. Originally, we did feel there a was a void of sorts here in LA but once the label was up and running, it was more about finding and facilitating great music that spoke to us.

Along with the series of label showcases you’re hosting all over the country, you’re releasing remixes by Francesca Lombardo, Daniel Bortz, Signal Flow and PBR Street Gang. How did these come about? It’s a quartet of artists we’ve been fans of and friends with, but who haven’t been parts of Culprit yet. Once the idea of picking a song off each of our “Above the City” compilations and remixing them came about, these were four acts on top of our wish list. We’re very happy that all four wanted to be part of the project as well.

Can you give us any hints as to whom else we can expect releases and remixes from on Culprit in 2014? There will be quite a few returns to the label this year – we’ve really been focusing on a selection of artists who’ve released with us before and really hit the mark, those who are part of the core group. People like jozif, Edu Imbernon, Justin Jay, M A N I K, and Adriatique. But we’re also spicing it up with some fresh Culprit faces, like Bambook fellas and Greg Pidcock. We have something in the works with Clarian who we are huge fans of and who’s done things for us though not a full release yet. Also, Maxxi Soundsystem – he’s remixed for us and has been playing some of our showcases so we have our eyes on him for a full EP.

What have been some of your favorite moments from the past five years? So many, of course. The day our first release came out – Hot Natured’s “h.e.a.d.s.” – like any first, that’s a feeling not to be replicated. All of our showcases in Barcelona, during the off-Sonar week, have been very memorable. The way the Culprit Sessions parties at the Standard Hotel really took off and became something that we are known for…some of those parties have been truly epic. You know, every release we’ve had out is a special event in its own right, a reflection of ourselves and our musical (and not just musical) sensibilities. We love them all, and those that really seem to make the mark out there, that’s a great validation.

Are there any artists you would like to work with that you haven’t yet? Of course! Probably best not to put them on the spot in advance, but let’s just say that getting a DJ Koze or Isolee remix would make our decade.

What has been the most challenging hurdle you’ve had to tackle in regards to the label? The label needs and deserves a lot of care and attention, which means time. Sometimes time is a luxury because there is DJ touring, own studio time and promotion that competes for that time. And you can’t let up and fall behind at all. But the trust and appreciation from the people who follow Culprit and from artists are motivators enough.

What else is on the horizon for Droog and Culprit? Mo’ better music! This year will see a lot of touring with anniversary showcases, which is exciting. Some fantastic releases are in the works. Droog has been in the studio a bit more too so more music from us as well.

Droog was recently added to the APEX tour's LA stop, where you'll be playing with Tale of Us and a number of talented artists. How did this come about and how does it feel to be a part of the tour? Liaison is behind this exciting tour and they’ve asked us to be part of it. I think it’s a reflection of our standing in the LA scene. We are thrilled, that’s one of the best line-ups to be put together in quite some time.

Aussie favourite Helena has just confirmed a residency at Las Vegas nightclub 'Drai's'. The local girl locked in the spot after inking a deal with Sony earlier this year.

"I'm so excited to be joining Drai's as a 2014 resident. I love playing in Vegas, it's always so much fun. I've see the plans and pictures of the nightclub and am absolutely blown away. This venue will really be the gem in the city!"

SASH 3rd Birthday At Flyover Bar

Sydney’s favourite Sunday kick-on SASH is celebrating its third birthday. After counteless benders and blow-outs, this iconic Sydney party brand have put together an event which is sure to blow the socks off any other third birthday you've been to before.

Like any good third birthday, SASH’s bash is an ‘Excessive Dress Up Party. As anyone who has been before will tell you, these guys aren’t kidding. The flyer explicitly states ‘No Dress Up, No Entry’. Don’t tell us you weren’t warned.

 photo SASH_zps0a1c3d5d.jpg

Few parties have had the longevity and resilience of SASH. While many wondered what the future might hold for SASH after the closure of the Abercrombie hotel, the crew’s relocation to Flyover Bar hasn’t slowed them down a bit. The crew have revitalized their brand, bringing a whole new audience of party hungry ravers into the realm. These guys have proven no matter what gets thrown their way, they cannot and will not be stopped

The calibre of artists at SASH is no doubt a major determining factor in its longevity. SASH has always been able to attract big name internationals, with global superstars like Ian Pooley and Desyn Massiello gracing the decks in the past. At the same time, SASH has always made a conscious effort to grow the talent pool at home. The crew have supported home-grown talent since day one, giving local DJs opportunities offered by few other venues.

This weekend’s lineup features Inxec, Mike Callandar, Owen Howells, Matt Weir, plus a special High Tea Set from Kerry Wallace.

Review: Recondite In Melbourne

Recondite: A Must-See Live Show In 2014

$
0
0

After witnessing Berlin producer Recondite perform in Melbourne back in March during his debut tour of Australia, Sonia Miles-Khan came to the conclusion that he is one of the must-see live shows of 2014.

Despite little more than a few years on the international touring circuit, Berlin-based Recondite is one of the world's most sought after underground artists in 2014. After seeing his incredible live show in Melbourne courtesy of Novel Touring, I can attest to the excellence of his craft. Before taking you through the show, it’s interesting to uncover how Recondite shot to prominence so quickly in the first place; a name that came from literal obscurity to being on so many artist and journalist's lips.

Lorenz Brunner is hard working by nature. Maintaining his profession as a personal trainer whilst being a touring electronic musician, the work serendipitously lead him to wider acclaim when he realised that Paul Rose - a.k.a. Hotflush head honcho Scuba - was a client at his gym. One of Scuba’s 2011 Sub:stance parties at Panorama Bar became his debut performance and the rest, as they say, is history.

The relative duality between the physical and the emotional features heavily in Brunner’s compositions as Recondite, so too do many of his subconscious and conscious ponderings on other things. The nature of Bavarians, longing for natural surrounds, and the translation of melancholy through the electronic music medium are all subjects that Recondite has explored. This existential take on his music, very separate from club and common music culture, is what makes Recondite stand apart from so many other producers and is possibly the source of his success. He only uses his own stems and whenever he feels that his set needs something new, he relies on making it himself. This pushes the creativity of the self-sufficient artist even further, inspiring him to make things that stand so independent from the majority.

When looking at Brunner’s entire discography to date right up to his most recent EP, attempting to describe his tracks by genre is pointless. His live sets are just as diverse and each is largely exclusive to a genre his music has favoured. In a similar fashion to Donato Dozzy, sometimes it's a techno set, another ambient.

With that in mind, I didn’t know what to expect when I went to witness his live set for myself. Would it be ambient, with favourites like ‘Riant’? Would he bring a darker styling with the ferocity of ‘Cleric’? Would everything magically appear?

The upstairs of Melbourne’s Brown Alley was as good a place as any to fit such a solid crowd. The brand new Outline rig fitted into Blights Bar that day was well tuned and made all the difference when penetrating the wall of bodies. While Recondite did begin on a slightly ambient note with some immense pads and stems from his downtempo work woven in, it was definitely a techno set. ‘Cleric’ practically set the room on fire and new beat structures worked over epic chord progressions made sure that emotion was still in the air.

It’s quite amazing that despite how commercial his sound can be (and often meandering in the tech-house sphere), Recondite still gets the chinstrokers seal of approval. Well-deserved too, because Recondite understands how to appeal to our sonic needs as human beings; our longing for conventional melodies, interest in unusual rhythms and subconscious love of classic form in composition.

‘Felicity’ was his encore and worked limbs as much as heart strings. When it was over, all I wanted to do was see him perform again to see what new magic it might hold.

Slam: 25 Years and Growing

$

Slam are synonymous with cutting edge, quality underground electronic music, making them the perfect headline act for the UK’s Noisily Festival, held in Leicestershire on 11-13th July. Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have been a constant and dominant presence on the electronic music landscape for over 25 years, powered by an uncompromising passion and love for truly underground electronica.

Forget fashion, fads and fickleness, Slam stay true to the cause and it shows. Their legendary Soma record label has been described as ‘Scotland’s finest musical Export’, releasing over 400 singles and 100 albums worldwide. Relentlessly busy with the label, Slam Radio, T in the Park preparations and a new Slam album in the pipeline, Orde found some time to chat with Pulse about Festivals, Frankie Knuckles and all things Soma...

First and foremost, can you give us some insight into the Slam secrets to success? You guys have been blasting dance floors and delivering top-quality productions for over 25 years. No real secrets – just a honest love of underground electronic music, strength of conviction, and a wish to always be ahead of the curve with what we play, produce and sign for release on Soma Records.

Just shy of its 25th anniversary, we have the mighty Soma Records, the label you co-founded in 1991, described by many as ‘Scotland’s finest musical export’ and notably, one of the longest running and most successful independent UK labels. How are things at Soma HQ, and what do you guys have in store for 2014? Soma Records was started because we couldn’t find anyone else with our vision or belief in the then emerging genre of “dance music,“ and to find ourselves honing in on our 25th anniversary is as much a surprise to us as it will be to many others. Soma has had many new signings recently to add to our established artists roster and we have a great team of people working at Soma HQ.

2014 is turning into a really exciting year for us. We’ve had a fantastic album release by Lewis Fautzi and singles from new artists such as John Barber, Roberto Clementi, 04LM, Charles Fenkler and Woo York to name a few. We also have a new Slam album in the pipeline due for release in September or October, and singles from Jeff Derringer, Secluded, Petrichor and the long awaited return of Funk DVoid to name but a few.

Also, we have a new series of Soma Nights due to start travelling to the world’s best clubs towards the end of the year.

With Soma’s reputation, the label has seen many big name releases over the years, yet there is always an emphasis on homegrown talent as well. Is this something that is important to the label, and to you personally as label owners? Soma has always had a very eclectic musical release policy and has always been very aware of home grown talent and the need to offer the encouragement and knowledge to help these artists develop and emerge onto the global dance scene, but we are always on the look out for great music regardless of where in the world it originates.

What does Soma look for in its new artists and their music? Not sure we’re able to put into words what it is exactly that makes Soma choose a new artist. It is a democracy though, with all of us adding our views to our A&R meetings – but strangely there is a fantastic amount of agreement

Can you tell us a bit about the Soma Skool project? Soma Skool was started as a way of passing on some of our acquired knowledge of the business to people wishing to make a career out of music. Not just in the areas of production and marketing, but also in areas that some people may be unaware of when first considering a job in music, such as law, promotion, management, and may other avenues. Information we found very hard to find when we first stated the label. All put together in a one or two day experience

At the moment we have a music production course run by Simon Stokes that allows people varying degrees of Ableton tutoring – a very popular course indeed

Slam hold residencies in 3 of the UK’s best nightclubs – The Arches and Sub Club in your home town of Glasgow, and Fabric in London. How do the two cities compare in terms of the clubbing vibes? Pressure at the Arches is a three room extravaganza for about 2500 people – a monthly event in Glasgow hosting some of the worlds biggest underground dance DJs alongside up-and-coming performers that are on our hit list of people to bring to our crowd in Glasgow – always a fantastic atmosphere and rapidly becoming a favourite with many of our guests. The Sub Club is the venue for our mid-monthly residency, Return To Mono, an intimate 400-500 basement venue often used as a testing ground for DJs who’s productions we love but haven’t had a chance to catch their performances, and artists that we can’t always get due to diary clashes for the bigger events

Fabric is just Fabric – probably one of the best clubs in the world. The guys always afford us a 4 or 5-hour set from the start of the night, allowing us to indulge our eclectic love of electronica. The crowd are always super enthusiastic – we just love it. To be honest, the vibe of all three of these residencies is always fantastic – a good club is just a good club regardless of locale.

2012 saw the launch of your weekly Slam Radio broadcast on Soundcloud, showcasing all things techno. What gave you the inspiration for the project? How have people reacted - peers and fans? Slam Radio has now reached its 80th episode and we couldn’t have ever have realised the popularity and reach of the show prior to launching. The inspiration came from listening to other DJs on our travels, and from various mixes we would hear in cars and on various social media sites. We felt that some off these mixes we’d hear needed to be brought together under one heading and put out in a recognisable and easily found format. Now we hardly have to ask for shows as artists come to us asking to do a show. We’d just like to thank all the contributors for the great music. and for making the site so internationally successful.

Is the electronic music industry a better place with sites such as Soundcloud and Mixcloud? Absolutely. Sites such as Soundcloud and Mixcloud have a fantastic diversity of music and mixes. As long as you’re willing to spend a bit of time honing your searches, there’s always something to be heard for the first time.

Who have been your biggest influences over the years? The list is endless – Kraftwerk, Can, Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Gorgio Moroder, George Clinton, The Clash, Afrika Bambatta, (a lot of reggae artists), Yello, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Lil Louis, Bam Bam, Phuture, Mr Fingers, Jeff Mills… These are only a few, the list is truly endless. Then there’s labels – Celluloid, Trax, R&S, Trojan, Warp, Sleeping Bag, FNAC, Nu Groove, Transmat...

What was your reaction to the recent death of Frankie Knuckles? A real tragedy – to lose such a great talent so young – a real pioneer whose torch burned so brightly, an icon within the dance scene. A first we couldn’t quite believe it – then the sadness set in and the memories flood back.

After spending such a large proportion of your lives dedicated to music, can you envisage a time when you say, ‘That’s enough’? If one of you was ready to stop and the other wasn’t, do you think Slam would function as a solo project? No idea – we’ll cross that bridge if we ever have to cross it – we tend not to look that far ahead and both feel there’s just so much more to be achieved – we’re still just enjoying the journey too much.

The weekend of 11-13th July 2014 is going to be a busy one for you guys. You are hosting the legendary Slam Tent at T In The Park, alongside a small detour to the rolling hills of Leicestershire to perform at Noisily Festival. Do you enjoy getting your feet dirty and performing in a field? Summer festivals are just the best – such an all-encompassing experience. We’ve been doing T for over 15 years, and it just gets better and better – the Slam Tent now runs over 4 days Thursday to Sunday – and we have the same crew of sound and lighting guys with us for all of that time – so its like a long camping trip with your best mates, add in some of the best DJs (now friends) and bands in the world – what’s not to love?

Noisily Festival is a far more intimate and underground affair compared with T in the Park. What are you expecting from the festival? What can we expect from your set? We’re both look forward to the appearance at Noisily – hoping to make some new friends. Slam now play on two laptops, eight decks, drum machines and samplers – almost a live remixing set up - so anything could happen.

With the explosion of festivals across Europe and sunnier climes, do you think it is important for the UK to continue to cultivate and embrace its outdoor festival legacy? Absolutely – its imperative that all UK festivals, large and small, continue to thrive, prosper and push the envelope. They’ve almost become a right of passage for most young people. Not everyone has the budget to travel abroad and shouldn’t be deprived of that special outdoor experience.

What are your all time top favourite pieces of music?
1- Manuel Gotensching – E2 E4
2- Mantronix – Ladies - 10
3- Slam – Positive Education – Soma
4- Lil Louis – Blackout - FFRR
5- Jeff Mills – The Bells - Axis

Diplo’s Working in the Studio with Madonna

Yesterday, Madonna instagrammed two shots of herself working with American producer Diplo in the studio. This isn’t the first time that Diplo has dipped into the pop world with high profile collaborations (He worked with Justin Bieber last year on an R&B track).

The first image Madonna posted shows the Mad Decent main man working on a laptop.

She then instagrammed a rather seductive photo of herself with a caption claiming that “Diplo is a slave driver.”

Throughout her storied career, Madonna has consistently experimented with dance music. She brought Alesso and Nero along to support her 2012 MDNA tour, and revealed that she was working on “great songs” with Avicii back in March. You may remember when she exclaimed “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” at Ultra Music Festival during his set.

Paul Oakenfold on Trance Mission: “Fuck The Boundaries”

In the midst of his ongoing massive Trance Mission tour, Paul Oakenfold is happy to announce that his forthcoming Trance Mission album is set for release next month on June 20th on Perfecto Records and Armada. Instead of featuring remixes, the album is full of covers of twelve of the biggest trance records of all time by the man who helped to make them so popular in the first place.

Songs like “Café del Mar,” “Adagio For Strings,” “Touch Me,” and “Hold That Sucker Down” have been remodeled by the legend to fit the aesthetic and style of today. Paul chose to approach each song as a blank canvas instead of simply reworking all of their elements.

Paul explains his motivation for the project, which has taken him six months to finish. “This album is called Trance Mission – because its filled with a selection of my favorite trance records from the last 25 years and it’s been a bloody mission to finish, but I like to think there’s something for every one of my fans – including those who see me as a trance DJ, those that see me more lined with house and those that know me for my background in film and score. Let’s cut to the chase – f*ck the boundaries, f*ck genres and the f*ck rules and regulations. Your Mission is to just listen."
