Amine Edge & DANCE: 'it’s all about the rave'

Best known as purveyors of the G House movement, French DJ duo Amine Edge & DANCE are a force to be reckoned with. From hip-hop heavy beginnings in their native home of France to sold out warehouse shows in London and Manchester, the DJ and production partners have come a long way in just three short years together, spearheading a new genre and founding their CUFF imprint to house it.

In what would appear a natural progression for the pair, their co-founded label CUFF has announced it will host it’s first ever Ibiza residency this summer, calling Sankeys Ibiza home for the entire 2014 season. On the brink of what’s set to be Sankeys Ibiza’s most successful year yet, Pulse sat down for a quick chat with one half of the duo, Amine Edge to talk all things Balearic, what’s on the cards for CUFF, and the great vinyl versus digital debate.

You were both respected DJs in your own right before you started to work together as Amine Edge & DANCE. Tell us the story of how you met and how the collaboration came about? I was a DJ since I was 13 years old. DANCE was not, but our big passion for music makes us the best of friends. We actually met 15 years ago, but we started to work together accidently around 3 years ago, and boom, here we are!

You’re known as pioneers of the “G House” movement. For someone who has never heard of G House, how would you describe it in your own words? It’s the real house music from back in the street, no fashion shit, no commercial, just raw, gritty, bassy and ballsy.

You both started making and mixing music from a young age, Amine you bought your first vinyl aged 13. What are your thoughts on the vinyl verses digital debate? Do you think a great DJ should be able to do both or is vinyl dead? In the past, we had no choice other than to play vinyl. A vinyl record is a masterpiece, something you have in your hand, something interesting with a cover and some credit info. An MP3 is a sad thing, but it’s our present now. In the past we had no other choice, but now we have millions of ways to play music in club.

A good DJ doesn’t need to know how to use a vinyl turntable - this is a speech from the assholes. I can play with 4-vinyl turntable. I use to do just that when I played a techno set ages ago, and it was fun, but now I use Traktor with Sync mode without any turntable at all. I love Traktor and this is the new way to play and use loops and effects with controllers.

This war between vinyl and digital is just a shitty excuse for stupid people who have nothing else to do than hate. I still use it, but vinyl is only for my old school collection and I have turntables at home also. I respect the DJs who use vinyl only or digital only because when you close your eyes and the mix and the music is perfect it’s enough for me! Who cares about if you can find the tempo of a record? Honestly, it’s 1% of the mix and many idiots make a big deal about it. I respect and love the vinyl and the digital; I hate the war and the idiots.

You’ve just announced that your label CUFF will be doing a residency at Sankeys Ibiza this summer season. Will you personally play all 18 shows, and what special guests can we expect to see along side you throughout the summer? All the artists that we have on the label make me excited. Volac, The Beatangers, ENNIO, Thee Cool Cats, Shiba San and lots more! The full line up is out already but its not 100 percent final. There will be updates during the summer and there will be some very special guests added.

You’ve said in interviews previously that you’re big fans of Solomun, Marco Carola and Jamie Jones, all of whom have their own highly successful Ibiza residencies and record labels. What artists or labels do you look to for inspiration both creatively and in business? Jamie Jones is a big example that we hope we can reach one day. His business is just so well done. Big respect for the man and his team. Also Loco Dice with Desolat is impressive and of course Luciano with Cadenza Vagabundos is one of the most impressive I think. He always surprise people with a new concept, following it through from A to Z without forgetting any of the little details. He is just amazing at the business.

There’s been an amazing response to the CUFF events across the world and particularly in the UK. Manchester’s own Sankeys are obviously massive fans and your London warehouse events have been consistently selling out. How do you think the reaction to your music has differed in the UK compared to in your native home of France?
In UK, they are born with the dance culture and rave, it’s in their blood, it’s all about the rave. In France, it came years after and it is so different. In France, we sell out too, but they don’t have the ticket culture like the UK. People just turn up at the door and you just never know how it’s going to be. When we did our first CUFF party at Sankeys in Manchester, we made a record as the fastest selling tickets in the history of the club! That’s amazing! We also sold out the second CUFF at Building 6 in London. It was a risk as it’s very, very big and far from the centre. Not many promoters dare to rent the venue. But like Charlie Sheen said: Winning!

Traditionally the home of house and Balearic, how do you think die-hard Ibiza fans will respond to a whole night devoted to the relatively new genre of G-House? Have you got any surprises up your sleeve?
A whole night with only one style of music is boring! All our DJs have their own identity and unique playlist. And yes, we will have some surprises to announce soon!

Aside from Ibiza, what’s next for Amine Edge and DANCE? Any upcoming record releases or new artists you’d like to tell us about? Who should we look out for? With CUFF, we’re set to release two EPs a month and a compilation with 10 original tracks called CUFF Vol. 2 in June. We’re also going to do tw CDs to give away for free at the Sankeys parties in Ibiza that will feature many of the CUFF tracks, as a special megamix. We’re working on a new four track EP for release in October with some amazing singers and rappers too.

Chris Lake Calls Out Art Department: “Absolute Fucking Idiots”

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth between members of the DJ community recently. It all started when Laidback Luke, normally praised for his DJ skills and modesty, posted a video of him performing b2b with Sander van Doorn and Steve Aoki during Miami Music Week. It was heavily criticized and was transformed into a parody video called “What DJs Do These Days.”

The video got plenty of hate from critics including Art Department, who had a few choice words for the trio (“They can lick their own vaginas.”). Then, a similar parody video of an Art Department performance popped up and further fueled the fire.

Chris Lake made waves when he posted a rant on Facebook:

Now, he explains the motivation for his rant to DJ Mag. “"I like Art Department's music but it's a completely different genre, they're bringing something completely different to the table but at the same time - I straight away went to YouTube and typed in 'ART DEPARTMENT live' and the first video that comes up is a live stream of them performing a Beatport event. It was an hour long video of Art Department performing, putting their hands up in the air doing the whole quote and I challenge anyone to go look at that video and see if there is any difference between what they’re doing and what Steve, Sander, and Luke were doing in that minute and a half video with their arms in the air."

"I'm not sticking up for these guys [Luke, Aoki and Sander] at all. I’m not sticking up for the video. I'm not saying that it's all some sort of skill. I just don’t see why people have such horrible manners. It's all music, it's creation - there should just be positive vibes. I don't like seeing people call people 'fucking assholes' or 'shit' because of the music they make."

"It’s like calling someone a cunt because they’re Christian. It’s no different. That’s not fair. Judging someone because of his or her sex, it’s no different- I have no tolerance for it.”

"Art Department come across as absolute fucking idiots. So rude, so derogatory - completely unneeded."

Watch Sven Vath Stage Dive in Lima

While rowdy stage behaviour can be fairly common in the EDM world - Aoki and his cakes, for example - it seems far more rare to see techno jocks lose themselves in the moment, instead opting for the more usual fair of rigid faced, stoic reserve.

Though not always. And to make things even stranger, it seems to be the older techno jocks who get wild on stage these days (we all remember Richie Hawtin's famous "epic fail" at Amnesia last season). And now Cocoon ringmaster and label boss Sven Vath joined the ranks of the techno DJ crowd surfers, though to be fair, Vath has always had quite a large stage personality. Watch here.

We love seeing Sven like this. Who knows, maybe we'll be lucky enough to get a Papa Sven stage dive on the Terrace at Amnesia Ibiza for Cocoon this summer?

ID Scanners Arrive In Kings Cross

ID Scanners will be put into action in high-risk Kings Cross clubs, pubs and hotels starting next month, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

The scanners were originally to be rolled out across 35 Kings Cross licensed venues in December, but will now be used from June, Hospitality Minister Troy Grant said on Thursday.

''This is a vital tool for the police,'' he told Parliament during question time. Mr Grant, who spent 22 years in the police force before entering Parliament, said the Baird government was focused on combating alcohol-fuelled violence.

The scanners capture the name, date of birth, address and photograph of patrons entering the venues. They alert staff and police if a patron on a banned list tries to enter high-risk premises.

The ID scanners are part of the NSW government's crackdown on alcohol-related violence, which includes the implementation of 1.30am lockouts and 3am cesstion of alcohol sales for venues in the CBD and Kings Cross, which were put into effect in March.

Watch A Dutch EDM Group Attempt To Sing Their New Single Whilst Having An Orgasm

If ever there was a canny way for a fledgling EDM group to get noticed, surely this is it.

ADAM, an electronic group from Holland consisting of five female vocalists who write, sing and perform their own music, were trying to come up with a clever video concept for their single 'Go To Go'. So, in a rather ingenious move, they landed on using vibrators whilst attempting to sing the track, all while being filmed.

The results are hilarious and enough to send staunch feminists into fits of keyboard-warrior rage. Have a watch of video below where the girls try to keep a straight face whilst reaching, erm, orgasmic heights.

EXIT Festival Tour: FACT at The Loft With Marko Nastic, Jaymo & Andy George, Angulo & Se7en

With the 15th edition of EXIT Festival taking place this year, the world famous Serbian party has many surprises up its sleeve. Along with one of the biggest back-to-back lineups of any festival in the world (and could quite easily be the biggest), EXIT is once again heading on a world tour.

The next stop on this epic tour of music and madness takes place tonight, May 9th at The Loft in Barcelona, which is hosted by FACT. Born and headquartered in Barcelona, FACT doesn't bill itself as a promoter or agency, rather human group that lives and breathes dance music. This ethos has seen FACT become a worldwide leader in the industry, throwing parties around the globe with the biggest and most well respected names in dance music since 2010.

So it makes perfect sense that an organisation such as FACT would team up with one of the world's best festivals, EXIT, which also sets itself apart from the rest with a history steeped in human freedom and expression. We caught up with FACT resident Rick Maia, ahead of tonight's party at The Loft to find out more about the history between FACT and EXIT, their relationship, and what's in store for the future.

Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with EXIT and what you do for them? Our relationship with EXIT is a close one. This year we are working together on two EXIT events in Barcelona as well as running the official after party for them during the festival, which is called Flowthing.

How did the relationship between FACT and EXIT come about? EXIT has always been an important destination on the world-clubbing calendar, so 3 years ago we decided to go and be part of the action. We setup an after-hours on the Danube, which has been running every year since. The success of the first 2 years lead us to partnering with EXIT last year and making it the festival’s official after party.

What are some of your best memories of EXIT? The dance arena is always incredible. I remember being there last year when the sun came up during Dixon and Amê’s set, and at this point of realisation, the whole crowd went mad. We’ve also had some unforgettable experiences on the FlowThing boat parties with some unexpected back-to-back sessions in the mix too.

What does EXIT mean to you, and why do you think it's an important festival? EXIT is a chance for a multicultural crowd to meet and celebrate all types of electronic music in an incredible location. And let’s not forget the sunshine too. What else could you ask for?

Can you tell us a bit about what you've got planned for FACT's part of the EXIT tour? The first event is this weekend and we’ve invited Serbian legend Marko Nastic to headline. Marko has been resident on the EXIT Dance Arena since day one, so it made sense to have him as a special guest. We’ve also invited Jamyo & Andy George from the UK to play alongside our resident Angulo and EXIT Tour resident SE7EN.

Classics: Erol Alkan – A Bugged Out Mix / Bugged In Selection

$
0
0

Classics is an interview series that takes an in depth look at some of the most influential and best loved albums, tracks and mix compilations in electronic music by chatting to their creators.

Erol Alkan is perhaps the most lasting exponent of the electroclash scene that burned brightly for a few post millennial years before succumbing to the cyclical nature of dance music trends. His pioneering indie-electro night, Trash, was where he honed genre-splicing DJ skills and booked fledgling bands like The Klaxons and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who he would go on to remix.

Though it’s his relationship with promoters Bugged Out that took Alkan beyond the London scene, as after filling in for a flight delayed David Holmes at one of their Fabric nights, they offered him a residency on the spot. Such was his ensuing popularity that they commissioned him for a compilation album, following in the footsteps of legendary residents like Justin Robertson, Felix Da Housecat and Ivan Smagghe.

At that stage Alkan had mixed a Trash compilation and a free CD for Muzik Magazine, but when Bugged Out offered him the opportunity to get his musical message across over two discs, he jumped at the chance.

“The reason I hadn’t done a proper commercial mix album before was that I wasn’t sure how to transpose what I was trying to create live in clubs to hundreds of people into something that was just going to speak to a single person or a few people at a house party,” he explains.

“I’ve always been so focused on the moment as a DJ, rather than creating a lasting piece of work.”

Split between club set ‘Out’ and the morning after ‘In,’ the mixes were laid down semi-live, working each track into the next using ProTools. The party mix was focused on bringing together all the different corners of electronic music Alkan was into at that point.

“I based it on the kind of set I would play to a perfect, open minded audience,” he adds.

While electroclash had boomed and bust by 2005, it was still a fertile period for the kind of tough techno Alkan specialises in.

“It was a really interesting time, because it was essentially pre-Ed Banger electro, although I did manage to get some of their artists on there,” he explains, pointing to a compilation debut for SebastiAn, alongside tracks like ‘The Theme From Vicarious Bliss’ and the acapella of Simian’s ubiquitous ‘We Are Your Friends.’

Elsewhere on side one, songs like Etienne De Crecy’s ‘Fast Track’ and the Nite Version of Soulwax’s ‘E Talking’ really stand the test of time, but when we get too nostalgic, it’s worth remembering that Roman Flügel’s irritant ‘Geht’s Noch’ was popular enough at the time to warrant inclusion.

“It’s a funny one isn’t it? When you listen to it now it just sounds like derivative Dutch house, but I still think it’s such a strange and unique track,” Alkan comments.

The perfect house party mix is finished in fine style with one of Alkan’s best mashups – at that stage not such a dirty word – his layering of The Rapture’s ‘House of Jealous Lovers’ vocal over Josh Wink’s always incendiary ‘Higher State of Consciousness.’ From that high, the compilation changes pace entirely, with Alkan remembering that the Bugged In mix was all about re-creating an atmosphere conducive to getting some kip after a big night out.

“I wanted to make a record that people could fall asleep to,” Alkan remembers. “I always used to make compilations for myself to put on when I would come home from a night out, so it was just an attempt to make a perfect version of that,” says Alkan. “It was also really important for me to get both sides of the music I love across. Plus there were so many great records I wanted to share with people.”

Fast forward to 2012, and such was Alkan’s enduring popularity that Bugged Out asked for ‘Another Bugged Out Mix,’ which was duly approached with similar ideals, but this time showing the musical evolution he’d experienced with the club night. It followed the same two-mix structure, with the ‘Out’ just as banging as before and the ‘In’ similarly eclectic, both full of cutting edge music culled from his formidable collection.

“I try to keep things as fresh as possible. I’m always excited about new sounds and ideas in electronic music, I don’t ever really want to go to Bugged Out and play a heritage DJ set at all,” Alkan states.

While he can’t be called on the probability of a third instalment in another decade’s time – pointing out that, “I don’t think 10 years ago they would have thought they’d be around for another 10 years” – he is full of praise for Bugged Out’s mission in this their 20th anniversary year.

“They just seem to be really consistent, probably because they do everything from a really instinctive perspective. That’s what gives them the edge,” he suggests. And that respect is reciprocated through to Alkan in being one of the first on the team sheet for any of their events.

“It’s an honour to have been a resident and to still play fairly regularly for them and with them; they are literally like family to me.”

Origins by Luciano at Cocoon First Acts Announced

Ibiza mainstay and Cadenza boss Luciano will deliver his all new Origins project on the 9th June at the Cocoon party at Amnesia. After many years at the forefront of the Ibiza scene, techno pioneer Luciano will join forces with Cocoon for a true celebration of underground music.

Luciano’s relationship in Ibiza began in the heart of the underground scene with Circoloco at DC-10 before he held a free part at a then little-known beach bar, Ushuaia. After the success of this party, which also kick started Ushuaia’s growth, Luciano went on to hold a Sunday residency at Pacha with his legendary Vagabundos parties. Having had close ties to these Ibiza institutions, Luciano will embark on yet another sonic journey as he brings his Latin flair to Amnesia.

The first Origins party will be held on 9th June and each of the events will be headlined by Luciano himself, with support coming from the new Aether Artists imprint, which is dedicated to providing a platform to a selected group of artists affiliated with Cadenza.

The first of these artists supporting the main man at Origins will be long-time member of the Cadenza crew, Michel Cleis. After huge support from Luciano, Michel Cleis’ track ‘La Mezcla’ became a hit, propelling the Italian further into limelightt, starting a strong relationship between the pair.

Also in support will be Berlin based Canadian, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, again bringing more of the minimal leanings to Origins.

With Origins set for eight dates at Cocoon at Amnesia over the summer, be sure to check back for further details about who will be joining Luciano on this new project.

Pure Groove: From NASA to Miami Music Week

There’s a new sound system in town and it’s already begun making some serious waves. Pure Groove Systems recently joined forces with Danley Sound Labs in an exciting partnership that seems to be raising the already sky-high bar in sound engineering by bringing space-age audio technology to the music and nightlife industries. Tom Danley launched Danley Sound Labs in 2005. He holds 13 Aerospace patents, including being the first to demonstrate acoustic levitation for space research, and 17 loudspeakers patents. His products are used by Cirque du Soleil, IMAX and major sports areas.

Damian Murphy of Liquified is the founder of Pure Groove and has been producing dance music events for the last 25 years. He played an integral role in the burgeoning nightlife scenes of Atlanta and Los Angeles. Combined, the two make a stellar and seemingly unstoppable team. Pure Groove debuted at Miami Music Week at the Ice Palace, Surfcomber and Cafeina, providing sound for Armin van Buuren, Circo Loco, dirtybird, ENTER., Get Lost and Paradise. We had a chance to chat with Mr. Murphy about the partnership, Danley’s history with NASA, highlights from Miami and more. Read on!

Pure Groove Systems and Danley Sound Labs recently announced their partnership. How did this come about? I have been an event promoter for over 20 years and Danley Sound Labs reached out through a mutual friend that they wanted to expand to music. We arranged a demo and I was blown away by the clarity and power of the sound. I knew that there was nothing like this sound system in the nightlife and festival industries. Not only is their audio technology superior to anything I had ever heard, I respect and appreciate the Danley team's passion for sound, and the partnership was born.

What do you hope to achieve with this partnership? We want to be the new global industry standard of sound through innovative technology.

The Danley Sound Labs crew has a very interesting story. You guys used to work at NASA manufacturing sound as a weapon. Can you tell us more about this? To clarify, Tom Danley was the former Director of Electroacoustic research with NASA. He holds 13 Aerospace patents including being the first to demonstrate acoustic levitation for space research. Additionally, he has been a research leader in the uses of acoustics in the military and industrial applications specifically related to active noise cancellation. Tom Danley also holds 17 loudspeaker patents.

Pure Groove had quite the introduction at Miami Music Week this year, handling sound for the dirtybird BBQ, Deep Dish’s Reunion and Richie Hawtin’s ENTER. You redesigned the entire monitor system to suit Richie’s specific sound needs. Tell us more about this. We can’t reveal too much at this time, but that’s what is great about the Danley team - they love challenges and always seek to create new things. That's why they're innovators.

What were some MMW highlights? It was great to have legendary artists such as Richie Hawtin, Deep Dish, Armin van Buuren and Pete Tong test drive the systems, but for me it was brilliant to hear people’s positive reactions to the systems.

Was there any monitor in particular that was used at most of the MMW events? We used our SM80 over TH118 monitor system.

What has been the most difficult obstacle you have faced so far? Changing people’s opinion on what great audio should sound like without having first experienced our systems. One of Danley Sound Labs' mottos is “Hear it. Believe it,” which is very true because once I heard it I knew this was something special.

Which events, festivals, artists, etc. would you like to work with? We would like to work with everyone who appreciates and cares about quality audio. You would be surprised by how many people in our industry actually don’t care.

Private Lifeis Cape Town’s finely tuned house and disco night held every week at the much loved Waiting Room. Reminiscent of clubbing culture in its most authentic state, Private Life has become home to a family of avid and  educated house and disco enthusiasts.

This Saturday the 10th of May, Private Life is headlined by international cohorts Justin Miller (DFA/HAKT/NYC) and Tyson Ballard (Voyeurhythm/HAKT/Australia).

Justin Miller (DFA / Have A Killer Time)   Mainstay party conductor and overall cool guy, Justin Miller is the quintessential New York City DJ. Mixing the classically cool with the always-cool and the brand new, he’s a selector whose tastes spread across best of techno, deep house, and disco new and old. Part of that diversity likely comes from his tenure at DFA Records guiding the seminal NYC label through one of its most fruitful periods.   The Wolf + Lamb cohort has fostered a reputation as an international taste-maker with globe-spanning gigs, from Fabric, Cargo, and Plastic People in London to Social Club, Scorpitone, and Le Baron in Paris to the humble War Room in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

These days Miller is his own boss. From running his own label, Have A Killer Time, to taking on spontaneous side projects like managing Nicolas Jaar’s label, Miller has set a high standard for himself.

Tyson Ballard (Voyeurhythm / Have A Killer Time)
Born and raised in Adelaide but now settled in Berlin, music is in Tyson Ballard's genes, his neurons sing to each other, every beat of his heart is like a kick drum, each footstep a snare. His only motivation is love for the art with a firm focus on the highest quality.  His music career began as a percussionist for The Fuglemen, a Hip Hop group that achieved underground acclaim and toured extensively. At present, Tyson presides over his own successful imprint Voyeurhythm releasing four of his own EPs as well as a handful of other brilliant records, a DJ and production career spanning over two decades and a sideline in producing some of the world's very best rotary DJ mixers.

Seminal Cape Town DJ/producer Erefaan Pearce hooked up with Private Life protagonist Terrene Pearce for this quick fire interview ahead of their big night out this Saturday.

Who or what is Private Life? TP: Private Life is a weekly Saturday night party run by a group of friends namely myself, Julz Sanchez, Dario Leite and Pierre Estienne. The idea is pretty basic, we started the night to play the music we wanted to listen to with no real intention of making piles of cash. If your not finding what your looking for in a certain scene music its better to create your own vibe than to moan for lack thereof I guess.. The night lends itself towards more forward thinking music styles. Leftfield Electronica and Disco as well as Disco and House underground Classics. Basically whatever we're feeling. We also have a strong emphasis on playing hard to find music and of course vinyl. Vinyl appreciation is something that has grown with Private Life. There is so much amazing music that can only be found on vinyl and there is always something special about watching a DJ play it.

The inspiration behind Private Life? TP: Exciting fresh music, new vinyl, great sets, great dance floors and the loyal following we attract to Private Life. We may not have a 1000 people at our event and I like it that way, I prefer 100 amazing people who are truly feeling the experience to 1000 people there just to be there.   What are your thoughts on the present state of Cape Town’s music scene? TP: As with any scene you have to take the good with the bad, the contributors with the rapists. I think we (Cape Town) as a community need to start valuing unique events with unique music. Deep House alone has so many different facets. Why not exploit that and make it exciting to go to different events? As oppose to going to some events where you would  hear the same music over and over and over again. We need to take risks. I'd much rather go to a party playing music that is fresh from a different genre than to a “Deep House" event playing the same shit I hear everywhere. Dig deeper! Talk about your guests this weekend and how you guys came to know each other. TP:Well Matt Hessletime who runs Tief Music and has an extremely succesful night at Corsica Studios linked me with Tyson and Justin. I obviously jumped at the opportunity to host them as I'm a big fan of DFA Records, Voyeurhythm and of both Tyson and Justin in their capacity as DJs and producers. Their sound and vibe is perfect for Private Life. If Private Life was a record label what would you be looking for? TP: I guess just great, interesting music. It would be about the music regardless of the artist’s profile. If the music is good they will listen.
