Torrential Rain Forces Early Finish at Secret Garden

$

Revelers at Sydney’s Secret Garden Festival had their fun cut short on the weekend on account of dangerous weather conditions. Torrential downpours forced event organizers to pull the plug on the Camden weekender, with headline artists Ryan Hemsworth and Softwar unable to take the stage.

A roof collapse at the Garden Stage proved to be the final straw for the Secret Crew, with the festival subsequently shut down before the finish line. No one was seriously injured in the collapse.

Good-guy incarnate Lancelot reached out to fans over Facebook to apologize for the cancellation:

"Hey everyone - myself and the band are really heart broken that we couldn't debut the live band show for you all last night at The Secret Garden Festival. The relentless rain really got the better of us and made it unsafe for the festival to continue. Not to worry, we will have a bigger and better live show prepared for next time x"

On a weekend which coincided with the introduction of NSW harsh new lock-out laws, a healthy police presence at the Camden Festival ensured proceedings went off without a hitch. Police searches and sniffer dogs were in full force, with 91 people and 33 vehicles searched.

DJ Paris Hilton Ignores Haters: "I’m doing what I love and I’m getting paid a lot of money to do it"

Paris Hilton is a name that stirs up a lot of emotions in the dance music scene ever since the hotel heiress entered the world of DJing, with hate generally being the most favoured flavour. And whether you like it or really, REALLY loathe it, she's become an in-demand name on the commercial and celebrity circuit, locking in a second residency at Ibiza's Amnesia club, performing on the Ellen show and even DJing at a James Cameron-hosted Oscars party this week.

So what does Paris think of her haters? Apparently she doesn't give a flying f**k about them, as was expressed in an interview with V magazine.

"There are always going to be haters in life. I don’t pay attention to those people. I’m doing what I love and selling out shows all around the world, and I’m getting paid a lot of money to do it. I’m passionate and I work hard to keep bettering my music, my sets, and myself. That’s what really matters."

If the bit where Paris bragged about being paid loads of cash to DJ was a little annoying, then her waxing about her latest DJ fashion accessory is really going to sting.

”I love rocking my Chanel fingerless gloves,” she reveals. “I own more than 500 pairs, and I call them my DJ gloves.”

So, what's next for Paris?

"My next goal is to get into producing, and I’m excited to learn more about it. I’m working with some of the best producers in the business and I think it’s important to learn from them and soak in as much as I can."

Deadmau5 Releases on Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 Under Alias

$

Those who have been following Deadmau5 since the early days remember a very different mau5. One who made some pretty wicked house and techno when he put his mind to it ("Faxing Berlin," anyone?). And despite his then crazy mouse head, he was just a skinny, pale Canadian guy with a funny stage persona who made good beats. That was before the Twitter rants, blink-of-an-eye marriages, Nyan Cat wrapped Ferraris, Facebook fan bashing, and all the other tabloid junk he's become so synonymous with these days. But it looks like, at least with this new release on Plus 8, Joel Zimmerman might have finally gotten back to what it's all about. It only took an alias to make him do it. Listen to testpilot's "Sunspot (White Space Conflict)" here.

Though, to be fair he did make the track back in 2012, before most of the drama began. Who knows? Maybe with enough positive feedback, he'll get his head down and make more techno. And just in case you're not sure this is actually a Deadmau5 track, listen to this version uploaded to YouTube in 2012 below, and check out this statment from Richie Hawtin himself regarding the track: "Its been nearly 1.5 years since the last PLUS 8 record, but it seemed fitting that this record in particular, made by a skinny white kid from Canada, became part of the labels collection and history."

Bring on more testpilot.

The Blend: Andrew Winer (Sadhu Sensi)

$

To give you some scope on the series we call The Blend, you have to understand that for this we spotlight artists that are slightly off-centre to that of the DJ/producer’s we normally showcase. One could expect to learn about an outfit that experiments with the fusion of electronic and live extensions simultaneously and for this edition of #TheBlend, doing exactly that, is Andrew Winer.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of spending a little bit of time with him, also known as Sadhu Sensi, I seriously doubt you’d disagree, that after the time spent with this humble man you feel better for it. You get the sense that Andrew is completely in tune with himself and knows where he’s going, so to speak, because he is. On the musical front, an incredibly talented musician that’s not afraid to explore all or any avenue of music that comes from an equally diverse background. From co-founder of 7th Son on the keys, to bass guitar extraordinaire for several other projects, to finally pursuing his solo career as Sadhu Sensi.

Sadhu Sensi, after spending many life times as a recluse meditating in the caves of the Himalayas, he decided to come down from the mountains to spread the wisdom and knowledge of the East to the West, through music. He has played in many of the top festivals and collaborated with distinguished artists. The sounds range from dub, down-tempo, psy ambient blues to experimental house, electronica, and techno.  We managed to catch up with Sadhu Sensi while on tour in Goa. Read further:

Howsit Andrew, or Sadhu Sensi, rather! Tell us about Sadhu Sensi, where does it come from and what does it mean? Howzit cliffy! Well, the name came about through an evolution of my stage name from 7th son, which used to be sergeant Sensi. I got that name because I used to be quite militant about my use of really good mariujana ("Sensimillia" – ‘bud’ that does not contain seeds). When I started to become interested in eastern mysticism and philosophy I changed the sergeant to Sadhu.

You’re incredibly musical. I know this because I’ve personally worked with you in the past and your history says it all. I know your sound expands from dub to down-tempo, psy-ambient blues to experimental house, electronica and techno. That’s quite diverse, to say the least. Do you have a preference? Or is your approach based on the foundation of what you’re feeling at the time? Like you said, my taste and style is quite diverse. I don't think I have a preference. I defiantly just write what I am feeling at the time and use it to build a set that tells a story. It usually starts out nice and chilled and ends up grooving toward something more danceable.

How are we (South Africa) matching up to the guys abroad? Or is it not really like that? An apples and pears type situation, possibly? …know what I mean? It’s hard to compare. South Africa is a very special place with an amazing unique energy.. It’s just that overseas, they have been doing it for much longer so there seems to be more diversity in the music and more support for alternative genres.

I got the sense you were quite excited at the fact that were in fact in Goa, obviously I’d say. I’m sure there is an abundance of inspiration that you’re drawing from the trip. What’s the first thing you want to do when you get back…musically? Yes, I'm obviously very keen to get back into the studio and see what happens. The inspiration is most definitely flowing.

What’s the first thing you want to do when you get back…music aside? Other than music I am really keen to get back into the mountain. I spent a lot of time up there hiking/running/walking, it’s where I get a lot of my inspiration back home.

If there was one, just one musician you could have the opportunity to work with, even if it were for just a track…Who would it be and why? Hmm, that’s a tough one. I enjoy so many styles and there are so many good artist it’s hard to pick one. For the sake of the question let’s just say Ott.

Man, I remember at the last Origin we were hanging out quite a bit, and were still up at the crack of dawn after many a conversation on the water’s edge, there by the second floor. You suggested we maybe clean the litter up on the floor before the people started to arrive for the Sunday. Magic! Do you think that this mentality is growing or dying? What’s it like there in Goa? Yes, it's definitely growing. We actually have it pretty good in South Africa. The litter and pollution here is on another level yet everything seems to still work…

Ok, I’m quite sure you have your hands full exploring the foreign lands. Last thing, when are you due back? And when and where will we be able to come and watch Sadhu Sensi back in South Africa? I'm due back next week. You can catch Sadhu Sensi at Utopia Festival (6 April) and Jungle Festival (26 April). There may be a small album launch as well but not sure when exactly. Will also be performing with a new side project The Ghost Quotes (Sadhu Sense and Taleswapper colab).. Ragazzi (28 March) and Psyche Night (29 March).

Okay, now it’s the last question. What’s your favourite production on your Soundcloud page? For me right now the ‘Feather’ track is the absolute business. Loving it. Fantastic work Andrew! Thanks cliffy, I would have to say the same.. really digging feather.

You heard the dates. Follow Sadhu Sensi to stay up to date with gig and release details of forthcoming works inspired by his world travels.

Sticky Labels: Resonance Records

$
0

Some might think launching a label merely 8 months into your DJ career is crazy. Because, well, it is. But Max Chapman doesn’t regret jumping head first into the deep end. He and label mates AJ Christou and Mark Horsey freely admit they’ve made a lot of rookie mistakes along the way. But then again, no agreement is easy when you’ve got three competing personalities in the mix. Yet Max reasons that the combined trust, expertise and experience he and his fellow Resonance Records’ honchos bring to the table is exactly why the label has been able to cut through the noise, stand out, score chart topping releases straight from the start.

You started Resonance Records along with AJ Christou and Mark Horsey, how do you know each other? The first time I DJed was in Manchester after my first release, which was on a Manchester based label called Electronique Digital. I met AJ that night and kept bumping into him whenever I was in Manchester. As a natural progression, we became friends, and then both developed the idea to start a label. Mark and AJ were already friends who had discussed the idea, so we all formed together and started Resonance Records.

Where does the name originate from? I like alliterated names. I wanted the name to begin with ‘M’ and call it “something Music.” Or to begin with ‘R’ and name it “something Records.” Resonance is one of the dials on a synthesizer that I see every day. It’s also the quality in a sound that pierces you. When something resonates with you, it means something to you, so we thought it was the perfect name.

Between the three of you, what experience did you have with regards to running a label when you started? Absolutely nothing, we went straight into the deep end. From another DJ’s point of view, they’d think it’s quite mad starting a label 5 months into your DJing career. But at the same time, I was very hungry and luckily it’s worked out all right. We had a lot of friends with some great, unreleased tracks, and we just started from there.

What’s behind the decision making process between the three of you? Is there a struggle? [Laughs] One of us will love something, one of us will think it’s all right, the last will hate it. And it’s the same thing over and over again. But we’ve learnt to trust each other. I play slightly techno/house, where as AJ is full on techno, and Mark is deep house, which means we all have our own area to cover when signing tracks. And that is why the trust in each other we have is so important.

What have you come to learn since then and what mistakes if any have you made? I’d be lying if I said we hadn’t made an abundance of mistakes. Jumping in the deep end like that, there were so many things we hadn’t realised we were doing wrong, especially with releases. For example, if you release on a Monday on Beatport, that’s how you qualify for support like banners and getting featured in the must hear tracks section. We didn’t know that for seven releases, so we were releasing on Beatport with hardly any support.

What were the deciding factors around launching your own label a mere 8 months in your DJ career, why not wait a while longer? I was such a hungry person at the time. When I first had my breakthrough, I wasn’t aware of a lot of things in this scene, such as the labels or how anything worked. I was very lucky, which made me excited and hungry for more. Any normal person would have waited a few years to do it; it was crazy and mad to jump in like that, but I’m glad I did it.

What would you say to someone wanting to start their own label? Do your research and have enough information behind you to make it work without a lot of stress, like it was for us. But at the same time, if you feel you are ready, you are going to have so much fun doing it. At the end of the day, the time is right when you think it’s right.

What are you looking for when you sign someone to Resonance? When we sign a track we want it to be a good, solid track. It doesn’t matter what style it is as long as we think it’s produced well and it’s going to get people moving in the genre it’s fit for. One of my favorite things to do is sit and listen to all the demos we get through because it’s exhilarating, especially when it’s an artist I’ve never heard of. They could be the next best thing.

How much influence do AJ, Mark and you have on the artists? The number one thing is I want the artist to be happy. If they sign a record or records to the label, they get treated extremely well. We usually give them a gig straight away and get them on the next available party. We try and treat our artists as we would want to be treated if we were signing to a label.

Your first release was a hit, right? Can you tell us about it? It was a 7-track sampler, all various artists, and the bestselling tracks were No Artificial Colors’ “Girl Get Down” and Clinton Houlker’s “Party 2nite.” They both reached number two and three on the Beatport chart, and that was our first ever release.

How many artists are currently on your roster and how big are you looking to grow? We have 52 that have already been released, and scheduled over 2 years.

What’s in store for Resonance Records in 2014? Any fresh news you can reveal to us? The next release we have is Mark Jenkins EP called ‘Feel You’ with a DJ Leeroy remix and a Baade remix which is myself and a friend, Dave Whall. Then we have Michael Jensen’s EP, we’ve been really lucky to get a Richy Ahmed remix, Him Self Her and Alex Jones.

Defected in the House Returns to Booom! Ibiza for 2014

Defected Records has announced the return of Defected in the House to Booom! Ibiza this season, and is set to host a mega 20-week-long party stint every Tuesday throughout the summer.

After a highly successful first year, Defected Records is ramping up for their second round at Booom!, which will kick off on May 20th just shy of the opening of the International Music Summit (IMS).

In what Defected's Simon Dunmore is calling a "ballsy move," Defected will be taking the normally jam packed Tuesday night slot:

“Recently, DJs have been prioritising the European festival circuit so moving away from the weekend will give us greater access to a broader talent pool and allow us to evolve our line ups. The current House renaissance, along with the fact we are celebrating our 15th anniversary this spring, makes this summer an exciting proposition."

The Defected team has promised the return of Defected in the House residents Sam Divine, Simon Dunmore and Flashmob, as well as multiple appearances from international guests including MK, Kenny Dope, Noir, Deetron, Oliver $ and more.

Riding high off the back of a successful winter season that saw Booom! open every weekend throughout the cooler months, Defected fans can expect further refinements to the venue’s “world first” Pioneer Club Sound System as well as dazzling light and visual installations.

Defected in the House will run every Tuesday night from 20 May 2014 until 30 September 2014.
