SoundPark: Nacelle – Dancing on the Nile

Over here at SoundPark, we believe that there are amazing and engaging stories from all corners of the globe. We pride ourselves on showcasing great ideas and the minds that bring them to life. To launch our second season of SP, we’re taking a visit to Cairo, Egypt to showcase one of the production agencies that do it right. The underground house/techno scene in Cairo is still relatively fresh but the brains behind Nacelle have been putting together successful events for over four years now. In a scene so young, we had to find out what makes Nacelle stand out from the rest. We sat down with the team to shed some light on the scene in Cairo, the challenges they face putting together events, and what makes them so unique. To soundtrack your weekend, Nacelle resident and a personal favorite of ours, Hisham Zahran crafts a gorgeous auditory story taking you into the smoothest parts of deep house. Welcome to SoundPark.

Many of our readers might not be very familiar with what you have going on over there, what exactly is Nacelle? Nacelle is a concept we started here in Cairo with the intention of being a virtual venue for music that we wanted to play for people. In Cairo, 500 people club nights were generally not very casual until recently. Our events feature many different styles of music night – funk/soul/disco, afro-beat, and of course house, the house music night being our largest and craziest. The weekly Friday night House Sessions take place currently in an incredible space on the Nile named the Temple. It currently is not a club; we set it up weekly as a pop-up club from scratch.

I really feel if you want to present new music or music that’s different than expected, you need to tweak every aspect of the night. So, each week, we play with those tweakable parameters in each venue in an attempt to ensure the music gets a fair shot…and if you don’t like the music we ensure you are comfortable and have a blast anyway. One of the more important parameters is sound. Most cases we reinforce any existing sound system to ensure the sound really hums. If you’re going to listen to music, better hear the entire spectrum of sounds, especially with house music - clear, rich, defined mid-bass and sub is extremely important.

Other things we tweak are the layout, dance floor, menu/specials, and door selection/staff. We really focus on the basics. Decoration has really not been our thing – only what we truly feel is fundamental to a great night…music, sound, lighting, visuals, and a friendly casual atmosphere.

Who are the main people involved? It started off with me and many different friends along the way. Then, after a year, I hooked up with my friend Hisham Nabil (not the DJ) and focused on doing this for real. He is very operationally minded and doesn’t like getting things wrong. House Sessions was born soon after I met Aly Bahgat, who started assisting me performing resident DJ duties. Lastly, an Egyptian/Swiss dude, Moez, joined us in the back end of the first House Sessions season – He’s a big believer and as great person to depend on. My wife has also been a part of our team, and it’s nice to be working together since this business doesn’t really allow you too much personal time. Funny thing is we’re both not party people…well not anymore at least. But since there’s so much serious work that is required behind the scenes to make this work right, it helps when one does not party …well once in a while never hurts at least!

I think it’s unfortunate that more people aren’t familiar with your resident DJ Hisham Zahran, who provided us with one of the better mixes we have in our catalog - how did you two link up? How does he make things special, both with Nacelle and on the dance floor? We both followed each other’s progress from afar, and made contact when he moved to Cairo from Alexandria in the spring of 2012. He played one of our nights and we immediately spoke internally about him joining us as a resident the following season. He’s a great DJ, always does his homework, and really knows how to read a crowd. Not only is there a mutual respect between the two of us, but he really sees the vision in what we do, and vice versa.

Hisham is one of four residents over the past two seasons. The others being Aly Bahgat, Baher, and Aly Goede. They’ve all been great and big believers in the brand. They are among the best in Cairo at what they do, and are very well loved.

There has been a great deal of political unrest in Egypt’s recent history, how has this caused your events to morph, especially through government imposed curfews and such. Well let’s start with the curfew! We have to deal with this when we started our season in last September. We took over the Fairmont Hotel, made some deals with them and threw back to back pool parties two weeks in a row. On Fridays, people had to be back in their houses at 7pm! So, to get around that, you’d check into the hotel and party all night instead. We even rolled out 400 square meters of lawn on the rooftop terrace of the hotel. The first night we have 220 rooms booked – really showing how much people like to party in Cairo.

Prior to that, honestly, all the unrest and everything actually fueled the party scene. It’s always hard because you never know if you need to cancel the event and maybe lose a bit of money. But, with regards to the situation seen from the outside, it’s never what the news reports as the news generally reports on just one thing.

Why do you feel expression, especially through art and music, is so important to people during such powerful events such as revolutions? Well, it’s very important but it’s also just a consequence. Music and art are cathartic, and during such times many people have their work life disrupted. Either without work, less work, or their business has to make tough decisions. This leaves you in limbo a bit, to either create or support other creations. In Egypt, I’ve seen so many doctors, engineers (myself being one of them), lawyers, or so on just go off and start a restaurant, become a DJ, musician, get into radio or television…or any creative outlet. It was happening as a consequence of Egypt’s socioeconomic issues, and we saw it grow with the revolution.

Cairo is a rather unknown scene, what do you feel sets you apart from others? Any other scenes you think are similar? With regard to our techno/house scene, it’s pretty innocent still. You will not find as many jaded people due over exposure to parties. The DJs that come here from abroad really notice it. They naturally come not knowing what to expect. Our parties feature a dance floor with up to 600 happy feet on it and everyone is just ready to dance and appreciate the DJ. They don’t really need to prove themselves; they just have to play from their heart. The other thing is people do really party here, while I won’t start a pissing contents or anything, but it’s true. Egyptians can be relentless when it comes to partying! The intensity of Cairo itself plays a big role into shaping the scene here.

Let’s talk about your brand a bit, how do you convey the Nacelle brand through your musical selections? We all have very diverse tastes. Lately I’ve been into a lot of funk, and all the house I’ve loved has been funky…which can still apply to a techno track. Aly Bahgat loves melody and the funk. Generally, a lot of our house DJ selections have a bit of an organic feeling, though we also do touch techno still. We feel we are a party that has something to offer for the DJ, so we try to pick DJs that we feel will appreciate and notice that.

In terms of artist selections, we try to be pretty broad. We’ve gone from SUOL (Daniel Bortz, Chopstick & Jonjon, and others) to Noir, Hot Since 82, Maxxi, Crazy P, Matthias Meyer, Smash TV…. On the local front we have a ton of insane talent. Aside from our aforementioned residents, we’ve features Klady, Aroussi, Minus T, Hassan Abou Alam, In2Deep, and Fulltone – we have so much respect for all of them!
Anyways, there is this element of funk that is associated with our brand because of one of our nights, The B-Side. That’s kind of become my home, as I’m a bit older now and don’t play the house nights as often and prefer to carry a groovier tempo these days. All in all we go with what we like, and by just following the sounds we’re into. Doing that has allowed us to bring to Cairo the DJs we’ve all listened to so much over the years.

You have recently been known for your weekly party, House Sessions, which has the seemingly proper, “Go Wild” tagline. What makes this party special? What makes it a Nacelle party? I think it’s special because of the crowd diversity. You’ll find some very dressed up people and you’ll find people in sneakers. We’re not here to judge and we ask (silently) that nobody else does. We do that by our constant attention to provide a musical experience. Cairo has a very big table [bottle service] culture. We keep out tables elevated slightly on the sides, and have a massive dance floor in the middle…which is uncommon here. We also have an incredible entourage of people who keep the DJ are warm and filled with good vibes. We keep the door cool, while it has rules and all, it’s nothing crazy.
Our entry flow is peaceful, our visuals and lighting is not too flashy. We try to avoid labeling the party as underground or anything like that. We are what we are and we hope you like it. Of course, no party would be complete without the loyalty of our fans. We really do have some hardcore fans, both old and new. It’s truly amazing and makes us very thankful.

Nacelle aims to provide an outlet for entertainment and genuine fun by bringing talented DJs to play the good stuff. It’s not only about bringing good people together, but also bringing like-minded people together, and that includes the DJs.

You’ve been at this for over 4 years now, what do you have planned to keep things fresh? To keep the most important part of why we all do this, the people, happy? Well, I think if we shut down that would be fresh…hahaha just joking! We joke about that, it’s stressful at times! We actually have a couple of big parties in mind – like festival big. This would be new territory for us as we’ve never done that before. We have an entirely new concept around a festival that will result in a bunch of things that will be completely new to people here…and more importantly new to us. I think as long as you’re feeling challenged you will keep growing and doing it better and better. People feel that and it feels fresh. We are definitely not a group that tries to be original; it’s not about being original or being the first. It’s about being genuine and loving to do it.

Over the weekend that just went by the same guys that started the workshops in Langa, South Africa for improving lives and educating through electronic dance music that is Bridges for Music, joined forces with one of our favourite event organisers on South African shores Kinky Disco to raise funds for a new music school in Langa.

They put together a line-up that had local hero’s playing B2B sets with DJ’s from Langa, ultimately to demonstrate where the music can take you. Music is beautiful like that, music is powerful like that. If one can just harness the creative flow and channel it in the right direction it can take you places. Bridges for Music knows this and is well on the way of making it happen. Take a look at some of the pics taken from people who made it out to the charity event to support the cause.

Tim Green's Disc Over Music imprint have announced the next instalment of their showcases with a triple headlined attack featuring French house trio Apollinia at The Tunnel.

Since launching Disc Over Music last year, Tim Green and his new imprint have gone from strength to strength. Their launch party starred none other than RA top dog, Dixon, and the label's releases have featured the likes of My Favorite Robot and Timo Maas, and have been rinsed and lauded by a who's who of international house and techno jocks. Now, they're swinging another knockout punch with their next blowout, bringing French house trio Apollonia to the Tunnel for what's sure to be a wild night.

Apollonia hardly need an introduction, but in case you've somehow missed them, the trio, made up of Dyed Sondorom, Dan Ghenacia and Shonky (pictured above) are, on their own, some of the most in demand jocks of today, holding residencies at clubs like DC-10 in Ibiza. Together, they become the fabled Apollonia trio, melting minds with sets that defy reality. Recently they've been booked to headline Amnesia Ibiza's opening party, but you can catch them on April 4th at The Tunnel in Kent, along with Tim Green himself, Nicson and Mark Derry.

Disc Over Music presents Apollonia at The Tunnel will take place Friday, April 4th.More info can be found here.

LWE presents Ellum Audio Showcase: Maetrik @ Factory 7, In Review

Maetrik, Maceo Plex, Mariel Ito, call him what you like – the guy never fails to deliver. And this particular weekend, he’d be delivering twice, having already played the night before to a sold out crowd as Maceo Plex for London Warehouse Event's SideXSide Presents Ellum Audio Showcase. But now, it was time for his dark alter ego, Maetrik to come creeping out of the shadows, delivering his best to all the bad boys and girls.

Though before heading to the main event, Maetrik served up a little taste of things to come with an in-store appearance at Phonica Records, where an in-the-know crowd quickly filled every nook and cranny in between the racks and shelves in the dimly light building, some even spilling out onto the Soho curb when none more could squeeze through the doors. Although billed to play back-to-back with Convextion, Maetrik treated the gathered crowd to a 2-hour set alone, as the former had missed a connecting flight.

Starting out with trippy, warped electro soundscapes, Maetrik was highlighted only by the light of a small, pink and yellow lamp, slowly flickering next to him, amplifying the surreal nature of the scene. Gradually he increased the tempo of his set until he had the crowd wrapped around his little finger, his own pointing to the roof in anticipation every time he unleashed one of his signature sonic bombs, sending the amassed crowd into a whistling, bouncing frenzy in the process. The end of the show came far too soon, but thankfully we reconvened only a few hours later at the Factory 7 warehouse venue in Shoreditch, arriving to the sounds of Dexter and Convextion, who had now made it to London.

Although both played interesting, trippy, deep techno, it was perhaps more suited to the afterhours and lacked enough ante to get the packed crowd moving, leaving the atmosphere with a distinct a pre-concert, wait for the main draw feel. Finally taking the stage at 2 a.m., Maetrik took no time to give the crowd what they had been waiting for, immediately delivering some seriously dark, evil, sexy, filthy, brutal techno that your mum would probably disown you for if she knew you were into.

Whilst the in-store appearance at Phonica was more intimate, the East London warehouse setting lends itself perfectly to Maetrik’s unique brand of groovy, industrial, big room techno, and over the next 2 hours he proceeded to relentlessly pummel the eardrums and corrupt the minds of those fortunate enough to be in attendance with ruthless antipathy, like a man possessed. Accompanied by enough strobes, lights, and lasers to send anyone into a fit, Maetrik dropped some of his own monsters like “Bottom Heavy”, “The Reason” and“Crush On Me,” as well as other monstrous, eerie, chugging dark numbers. The entire set went by in a flash, no sooner had it started did it seem to be over, like some kind of twisted nightmare which one awakes from feeling unsettled and unsure of what just happened – except that this was a good nightmare, and one I definitely can’t wait to revisit…

Gatecrasher Creditors and DJs Won't Recieve Compensation After £2m losses

The Birmingham club Gatecrasher, which once aspired to become the greatest club in the world, is bust, according to the Birmingham Mail. According to recent reports, more than 230 creditors were "left over £2 million out of pocket when Birmingham-based nightclub Gatecrasher became insolvent," and will not receive any compensation.

The club initially entered into administration about 6 months ago. However, now it appears it will be unable to pay back those it owes, writing off losses of more than £2 million. Those affected by the write off include "the city council, owed £43,475, Cannock Electrical Installations, owed £42,323 and npower at Kingswinford, owed £133,453," the Birmingham Mail reports. In perhaps the most disturbing part of the story, several of the club's DJs won't be paid for services. An unnamed creditor told the Mail that some of the DJs are owed thousands.

“They kept saying ‘the cheque is in the post’ but it never arrived," they said. “Loads of people have been affected by this. The sad thing is that the law is on their side – millions have been written off.”

Gatecrasher recently took over the super club formerly known as Eden in Ibiza. No word on how the insolvency might affect the new club.

Luminary Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren has announced a new home for his A State of Trance party this summer season in Ibiza, now set to fill the Thursday slot at Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel.

Arguably the worlds most successful Trance DJ, Van Buuren will bring his party brand to the Ushuaïa open-air dance floor with a total of 12 shows, playing a longer set than in previous years, accompanied by two new guests each week.

Van Buuren confirmed the move live on air during his ASOT radio show in Buenos Aires yesterday, signalling a long suspected departure from his two-season residency at legendary Ibiza super club, Privilege. Rumours circulated that the DJ was looking for a new Ibiza home for the brand following the cancellation of the A State of Trance closing party at Privilege in 2013.

The new location will mean a considerably earlier finish time for the A State of Trance festivities, with the Ushuaïa stage closing each night at 12:00 a.m. ASOT fans can expect to see Van Buuren’s signature euphoric stylings fused with Ushuaïa’s unprecedented outdoor production, marking an exciting new collaboration for the party island.

Armin Van Buuren’s A State of Trance party will take place Thursdays from the 26th of June to the 11th of September at Ushuaïa Ibiza. For more information, click here.

Hardwell to DJ at the Indy 500

Just like the X Games, the Indy 500 is another example of a major sporting event that is embracing electronic music performers. Following in the footsteps of Afrojack and Diplo in past years, Hardwell will DJ in the event’s “Snake Pit.” The world’s number one DJ, as declared by DJ Mag this year, will play alongside NERVO and Dillon Francis making this year the most EDM focused yet. The Snake Pit is location inside turn three of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the party kicks off at 7am, running until the completion of the race.

The Snake Pit is a five-year-old revival of a tradition that became popular in the 1970s and 1980s before things started getting out of control. Today, it is a fully sanctioned event complete with an inflatable slide believed to be “the world’s largest,” volleyball, corn hole, body painting, and food trucks. Admission to the Snake Pit requires a race ticket as well as a $10 Snake Pit ticket, which can be purchased on the Indy 500’s official website.

The American fast food chain Arby's recently won Pharrell's now infamous brown fedora in an auction. The burger chain, who have a strikingly similar logo, paid for $44,100 for the hat, which became something of its own celebrity when a Twitter account in the hat's name popped up during the Grammy's, where Pharrell first wore the oversized brown Vivienne Westwood hat in January.

Luckily the money wasn't spent in vein, as the cash will go towards Pharrell's charity From One Hand to Another, which aids with learning programs for at risk youths across America. If you ask us, the resemblance is uncanny.

He pratices juggling and scratching for three to four hours each day (depending on how much homework he has) and spent ten months rehearsing his DMC routine. He’s learned a lot of his skills by watching videos on YouTube. Learn more about DJ Dwells by reading the full interview here.

San Francisco-based producer Tycho has slowly revealed bits about his forthcoming album ‘Awake’ over the past few months. He shared the title track back in October followed by more bits earlier this year. Now, the new album is available for streaming in its entirety, thanks to our friends at NPR. Listen in here.

The album is set for release on March 18th via Ghostly, and has been met with great reviews so far by fans and critics alike who have likened the eight-track experience to “the soundtrack to a sunbaked road trip, capturing the inexplicable nostalgia you feel imagining a new life in a new town glimpsed from the highway.” Let us know what you think!

Tycho is also about to embark on a major world tour kicking off on March 19th in Santa Cruz, California. Running until mid-May the tour will hit several cities including London, Paris, Berlin, Chicago, Montreal, New York, Washington, DC, Austin, Los Angeles and more.

What Do Tree Rings Sound Like When Played on a Record Player?

Barholomäus Traubeck has combined music with science by custom-building turntables that “play” slices of tree trunks. The art installation is called “Years” because of the rings' ability to date trees. The record player uses a PlayStation Eye Camera and a stepper motor to read the rings on the trees’ cross sections just like a record player reads the grooves on a vinyl record. Although the tree rings don’t sound musical themselves, they are translated into music by a computer which converts data gathered by the record player into a piano track using Ableton Live.

Despite the fact that the custom system “interprets” rather than “plays” the trees, the song produced varies with each piece of wood. Listen to one of the recordings, below!

James Murphy: "Commercial Dance Music Makes Me Want To Vomit"

LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy has expressed his distaste for the current state of commercial dance music at the by:Larm festival in Norway, where he was interviewed on stage during a Red Bull Music Academy session.

"What I see in the commercial side of it I find repellent. It makes me want to vomit," said Murphy.

"I just don't like it, it’s not for me, but it’s also not designed for me. I’m old and it’s very maximalist and I’m not a maximalist guy. I'm not excited about new stuff that much."

Murphy then added: "This past month I've been really hoping that there’s two people DJing to a room full of 150 people that think what I did was stupid and are making something awesome and having a great time. I won’t hear it until they do a shitty sell out track and I never hear what’s great about them, but that’s what I’m hoping.”

In other LCD Soundsystem news, a five-LP set called 'The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live At Madison Square Garden' is due for release on April 19, a four-hour recording of the band's final gig in New York. The recording will be an unabridged version of the band's final gig, coming in at almost four hours long.
