S.A.S.H Australia Day In Review

$

With S.A.S.H having moved from the late Abercrombie Hotel to its new digs of Flyover Bar, we decided to send off Pulse writer Kristen Marconi and S.A.S.H regular to find out how the party is settling into its new home. And what better day than Australia Day with Jesse Rose?

“S.A.S.H for grown ups” was my first impression upon encountering the quiet entrance of 275 Kent St. My cab driver assured me this was the address, though I would never have guessed there was a day party going on inside, until a rather easy on the eye security guard called out, "Looking for S.A.S.H.?" Yes, yes I was. Then I saw the familiar and friendly faces of Charlie and Sean – the always on top of it door legends I know and love. Phew, definitely in the right place! Props to them for handing me a petition to stop Barry O'Farrell's lockouts, too. (It’s worth mentioning that S.A.S.H’s new venue is actually outside the proposed lockout area, but the conscientious in the industry are intelligent enough to know that the scene needs to thrive as a whole if it’s to survive, so well done team for getting those petitions signed.)

 photo SASH1_zps3ee73f85.jpg

Flyover is S.A.S.H’s third venue, initially outgrowing The White Horse and moving to The Abercrombie, where it really found its feet and where you were most likely find all your friends on a Sunday if they were into good music. Some of my favourite sets of 2013 easily came from that famous Abercrombie terrace - Dixon, Heidi, DJ T to mention a few and always the most impressive of Sydney and interstate locals. Promoters Kerry and Matt have also always made sure there was a set for Australian expats on their return holidays to Sydney - Michelle Owen and Claire Morgan being two favourites from memory.

 photo SASH4_zps04913dbf.jpg

The closing down of The Abercrombie saw us lose a music venue we'd grown to love and had the S.A.S.H faithful fretting over where our favourite Sunday party would end up. S.A.S.H. had to go on, but where? Tight-lipped right up until the end, we were kept on the edge of our seats, waiting, until the announcement came: The Flyover. Where? Never heard of it!

Well this Australia Day weekend I finally became acquainted with the new S.A.S.H digs. It was the third party in the new venue, though you'd think it'd been there for years. The early arriving crowd looked fresh, making good use of the pizza, beer and cider specials for lunch as some much-desired house formed the soundtrack of the afternoon, which you could hear clearly anywhere within Flyover thanks to the new Funktion One soundsystem.

 photo SASH2_zpsbf29d9d1.jpg

The mostly outdoor dance floor has plenty of room to boogie, with a few seats and tables on the outskirts for those opting to relax and people watch. But it's obvious that most go to SASH to dance off the week and pretend Monday is far, far away. True to the former Abercrombie terrace, there is plenty of space to chill out and catch up behind the decks as well as the option to just get on the dance floor and enjoy. I must say I did both, and Adriano Migliorino played the perfect mid afternoon warm up that took us into Jesse Rose's set, which was nothing short of awesome. It was house, it was legendary, it was so much fun! I've had a lot of fun dancing over the years, but this Sunday I walked in struggling from a huge Saturday, sipping vodka soda that was just barely keeping me alive, though by the time Rose was 15 minutes into his set I'd well forgotten any struggle, or any need for more drinks. Matt Weir followed on with a monster of a set. I've heard Matt play countless times, but hats off to him on Sunday, I'd dare say that was the best.

 photo SASH3_zps5404295e.jpg

I have to say that Flyover is much more pleasant to dance at than our favourite sweat box, The Abercrombie. Also those who remember the sometimes treacherous, tiny stairway you had to navigate to get drinks will be happy to know that Flyover’s bar is right where you need it to be – adjacent to the main terrace area. They could do with some more bar staff for when it gets busy, but I'm sure they'll learn that soon enough.

It's your Sunday shenanigans sorted in a gorgeous space to relax and catch up with your mates or get your disco shoes on and dance the day away. Big ups to Kerry Wallace and Matt Weir for putting the research in and locking down an awesome venue. If you haven't checked it out yet, get down there this Sunday. The Flyover is the perfect fit for what I'm sure will be a big 2014.

[S.A.S.H @ Flyover's new hours are 12pm - 12am. This Sunday is headlined by Lee Brinx supported by French/Sydney expat YokOO playing a homecoming set. Details here.]

Quantum Entanglement
The Effects Can Last Forever
[Vakant]

Sometimes two people are just meant to be linked to one another by the universe because they’re meant to create something beautiful together. Fin Greenall (Fink/Sideshow) and Lee Jones (Hefner/MyMy) are the perfect example of this. From their early days attending the same university playing chess to a soundtrack of Aphex Twin and Future Sound of London, to remixing each other’s material, it’s been clear that some form of collaboration needed to happen. 'The Effects Can Last Forever,' released under the alias Quantum Entanglement, is that collaboration finally happening.

Two sides of the same coin, 'The Effects Can Last Forever' explores the same theme of cosmic connection through two versions of the one track, rather than two completely different pieces of music. This is a release best listened to in its entirety from start to finish. 'Heads' starts off deep, chunky and wobbly with spacious dub chords, a jittery TB-303 bassline and a heavily reverbed percussive rhythm which slowly builds to a crescendo before the track bursts into an uplifting, warm, synth-led peak.

'Tails' follows a similar pattern to 'Heads,' but has a distinctly deeper, more stripped-back and more experimental feel. Whacked-out tape delays turn the formerly recognisable TB-303 bassline from Heads into a hypnotic, brain-bending soundscape while the percussive elements are cut and pasted into a rhythmic shuffle. When it’s time for the lead synth to make its appearance, it’s been skewed into a forlorn, spaced-out series of harmonic blips and bloops that feel more menacing than comforting.

'The Effects Can Last Forever' is a rare example of a concept EP done right: two interpretations of a single theme that at once feel linked by a common concept but also distinct enough to warrant existing as separate entities.

The new licensing laws that were approved by the NSW Government yesterday have already claimed their first victim, with Sydney's newest Sunday party EXIT cancelled as of this weekend. House Of Mince promoter Peter 'Lovertits' Shopovski, who co-promoted the club night with The Spice Cellar, announced the news today via his facebook, directly citing the new laws as the reason behind the party's demise.

"EXIT is closing due to the licensing restrictions being pushed through parliament this week," reads Shopovski's post. "At at time when the night was just starting to build, the unfair and completely irrelevant lock-out restrictions from 1:30am affects so many people and virtually wipes a huge amount of income from our local businesses, licensees, venue owners, managers and all range service staff."

Tiesto returns to the Essential Mix with a special Clublife Afterhours mix, marking his first appearance since 2006. Details here.

Marking his 8th appearance on the world's biggest mix show, Tiesto returns to the Essential Mix with Pete Tong tomorrow night. Last time Tiesto was on the Essential Mix, he was performing live from Global Gathering in 2006, where he played tracks like Booka Shade's "In White Rooms," his own tech driven, progressive trance hit, "Lethal Industry," and of course, big room trance anthems like Carl B's "Social Suicide." Though Tiesto's musical style has changed rather significantly since then – much to the disappointment of some of his older fans – it seems that tomorrow, listeners might get a taste of Tiesto past, as the Dutch superstar will be bringing a special deep mix featuring the likes of Jooris Voorn and Chris Malinchak, according to the Essential Mix website. Tune in tomorrow night at 1 a.m. GMT.

MJ Cole: UK Garage Originator

$

Pioneer, veteran, innovator; whatever you want to call him, MJ Cole has been a defining figurehead in the UK garage movement since it began. Since the early days of his career, MJ Cole, or Matt Coleman, has become synonymous with UK garage, having released an abundance of work in that time. His debut album, “Sincere,” released back in 2000 on Talkin’ Loud, was signed by acclaimed musical taste maker and Radio 6 host, Giles Peterson, and was lauded by both fans and critics alike, becoming nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize. Now, Matt has been nominated for ‘Re-mixer of the Year’ at the 2014 Music Producers Guild Awards, alongside artists like Four Tet and the Freemasons, which will be taking place in London on February 13th. In its sixth year, the Music Producers Guild Awards recognize the enormous contribution made by recording professionals to the success of the UK’s music industry.

With the award, and moments like the recent American TV debut of Disclosure, it’s clear that garage is back on just about everybody’s radar, once again becoming a cultural phenomenon. So we sat down with Cole to find out what he thinks about things coming back around, hear his thoughts on modern production methods, and see what the future holds for one of dance music’s core figures.

Hi Matt, thanks for speaking to us, Happy New Year! How was New Year's Eve for you? Yeah it was pretty good thank you. I was in Manchester and London for New Year's Eve, but yeah the New Year is going well so far thank you.

Excellent. You started as a sound engineer, how did this progress to producing? Did you start producing solely garage? Well I grew up mainly playing piano and classical and went to music college, so really that was the beginning to my music career. Then I got into messing around with my Dad’s HIFI, so I got more interested with that side of things. I probably moved into having a little computer at home and listening to dance music in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s, and kind of thought I want to spend the rest of my life in the studio because I liked the studios. Then I went to go and work in the studio. I had a lot of these skills anyway, and they started to come through as I was engineering for other people. I never liked garage or anything at the beginning. I was a drum and bass head and pretty much disliked house music. But after engineering for a few different people, I found out that liked working with music at a slower tempo and I could play piano put my own music in and yeah, it kind of went from there.

Garage, or "future garage" has come back into full force these days. Being a pioneer of the UKG movement is this something you’re happy to see? Yeah, I guess so. I mean for a few years garage was a really dirty word and no one really wanted to mention it at all. I always thought the scene and the music we were producing in the late ‘90s and early 2000s was innovative and lent itself to pop music and was quite a selective genre, so it was little bit disappointing when it kind of got rubbished. But these things tend to happen to all genres. It’s going on with dubstep at the moment. It’s nice to see that it came around (garage) again with the likes of Disclosure. Those guys are reinvigorating the sound. Yeah, its nice to see that its coming around again, but even nicer to know that 18-25-year-olds are really into it, it’s not just like a resurgence of old guys with shiny shoes.

“Sincere” is probably one of the most iconic tracks that you produced, and is still played religiously in 2014. Where did you produce this track, and when you produced ut, did you think it would be so influential? I did it in my bedroom in my Mum’s house in Twickenham on a basic computer and a sampler. I remember the first person I took it to was a distribution place and they said they didn’t really like it. So no, I didn’t suddenly think it was going to be an amazing record, but it just kind of came out; it was very natural the way it happened, really.

Maybe there’s hope for all of us then! How would you say your sound has changed from your bedroom producer days to 2014? It’s just much, much better and a lot louder. I guess I’m constantly trying to have fun in the studio. I’m constantly moving on and trying new bits of this and that. A few years ago I got into the whole UK Funky thing. I went a little bit darker and produced a bit of dubstep and a lot more textual music, and now I’m using a lot more strings with classical influence. I guess I move around the whole time, but I just try to keep it interesting and have fun making music because that’s what comes through at the end of the day. And its what I like doing.

You’ve collaborated with a lot of great artists in the past, both for your label Prolific Records and in general. Who has been your favourite artist to work with? I worked with Jill Scott that was really cool. I’ve had Tom Jones in the studio he’s a really cool guy. I’ve also more recently done something with Dizzie Rascal; he’s a great guy. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some pretty interesting people, and they’re all fun in their own way. But I think I’d have to say Jill Scott would be my favourite pick as she’s just got amazing soul. What can we hope to look out for from Prolific Records in the coming months? I’m working on some new stuff at the moment, and I’m trying to have about three new releases on the label this year and getting that lined up. There’s a lot of new stuff going on in the studio at the moment, so we’ll wait and see what happens. I’ve got a cut on the Katie B album that’s just coming out too. I’m also doing some work with Azealia Banks and with new vocalists like Jimmy Napes. There’s going to be a lot of good stuff coming out.

You mentioned Disclosure before. What UK producers are you digging at the minute? Who should we look out for in 2014? T Williams, I’m really into his stuff, people like Shadowchild. There’s a lot of good stuff going on at the minute, however Zinc is still making good stuff, as is Zed Bias. I’m very into his music. There’s a lot of good stuff coming into the UK at the minute. I’m very happy to be apart of it and to make music for a living!

One last question before you go. What’s new for MJ Cole in 2014? Well what’s new is new music that’s going to be coming out. I’m going to be doing lots of DJing in York, Birmingham, London and Sheffield. I try and keep DJing as much as I can as it gives me room to work in the studio as well as have a social life. I like a balance between the two. It’s good to go out and see a crowd. I find you can get a little lost in the studio otherwise.

The Music Producers Guild Awards take place on Thursday, February 13. For more info, head to their website

Watch: Kvadrat Documentary Shows The Realities of Techno DJing

$
0
0

Feature-length documentary Kvadrat aims to realistically portray the lives of touring techno DJs. French/Russian director Anatoly Ivanov uses Russian DJ Andrey Pushkarev as his subject, following him through his daily life as a DJ from the festive atmosphere of nightclubs during his gigs to the aspects of his life that may appear more mundane – checking into hotel rooms, all the flights he takes, and using public transportation in the cities he visits along the way.

The film highlights the differences between the stereotypical perception of musicians and the reality. Instead of focusing primarily on the exciting shows he plays, the film also portrays the other less glamorous sides of the profession – long days with difficult schedules and weeks of track selection.

Shot in multiple countries including Switzerland, France, Hungary, Romania, and Russia, the documentary takes the viewer on the true journey of a touring techno DJ. It ditches formal interviews, voice-overs, facts, and figures for an approach that seems more like a road-movie or music video. Interpretation is left to the viewer.

I want to do some new tunes this year to send to my boss Steve and the label because they've been going 10 years now and have stuck by me. Hopefully by the end of most years I have done some tunes that are decent enough to release. but Dark Souls 2 is on the horizon soon so I'm not sure if I will have many new tunes for a while because I need to play that game a lot. But I'm going to try to get some new tunes together before it comes out.
Also I want to go and find some old tunes I did that still sound alright and never came out.. It would be nice to finally put some of them out on vinyl one day.
Also I want to tell my Mum my Dad my brothers and my sister that I love them to bits. Big shout out to the UK & everywhere else. Cheers & respect to everyone and anyone...be safe & take care"
- Will

In Case You Missed It - Berghain, Discogs, Dodgy Pills and Daft Punk

Once again, another week comes to a close, and with it, another week of big stories you may have missed. Thankfully that means two things. One, the weekend has landed, and two, we recap five of our top stories in this week's In Case You Missed It. This week we had bad pills, a Telegraph reporter get refused entry into Beghain, plenty of Daft Punk Grammy fever, and more. Read on.

Not Getting Into Berghain - The Telegraph Tries And Fails

An intrepid, albeit slightly unprepared Telegraph travel reporter tried to enter the holy gates of Berghain, and was promptly turned away by Sven the Berghain bouncer (pictured), whom he described as looking "like a post-apocalyptic bearded version of Wagner, the Brazilian X Factor contestant who destroyed multiple hit songs in 2010." The ultimately fruitless journey ended without giving readers much of any helpful advice beyond what can be summed up as "don't be an ass." But it was funny. So thank you, Telegraph. You can read more about the reporter's tales from the Berghain queue here.

The 60 Most Groundbreaking Mix Albums Of All Time...According To Discogs

Everybody loves a list, especially when it comes to music. And the fine folks over at Discogs recently took it upon themselves to compile a list of the 60 most groundbreaking mix albums of all time, which included entries like  M.A.N.D.Y.'s "Renaissance: The Mix Collection," Levon Vincent's "Fabric 63" and John Talabot's "DJ-Kicks." So what exactly is a "Groundbreaking" mix? According to Discogs, "Choice tune selection is vital, of course, but the durable mix goes way beyond that. It will evolve and mutate sonically within its own identifiable idiom. It will also, in its sympathetic tapestry of tracks, evoke quite specific moods, atmospheres, places and memories. It will make a definite musical statement." To find out who took the top spot and more, head to the full article here.

Go Behind The Scenes At Daft Punk’s Grammys Performance

Daft Punk swept this year's Grammys by a mile. But they also spun the US into Daft Punk mania, especially when rumours started flying around that the French duo were mimicking their performance with Pharrell and Stivi Wonder on the Grammy stage. So shortly thereafter, behind the scenes photos were posted to Hollywood prop-specialist Jim Logiudice's Tumblr showing that not only the duo's setup was fully functional, but really kick ass, too. Chalk one more victory up for The Robots. Check out the rest of the mind blowingly awesome photos here.

Daft Punk Robots Caught Without Their Helmets

We told you there was Daft Punk fever. Apparently the sight of Daft Punk looking like, wait for it, humans, is so incredible it warrants a paparazzi bonanza. Okay, we get it, they're The Robots and all, but really, they're two incredible French musicians who use the ultimate persona to try and remind listeners that it doesn't matter who is behind the music by wearing masks. But hey, who doesn't want to see what Guy and Thomas look like these days, right? For the rest of the pics, head to the full article.

Police Issue Warning Over Dodgy Superman Pills

On a more serious note, Scottish Police have issued an alert over pink superman pills currently in circulation in the west of the country, saying that tests have shown that the pills contain PMA (or methoxyamphetamine), a chemical similar to ecstasy but more toxic. Please be careful and try to stay aware of what's out there. Also, we hope for the swift arrest and eventual ass-kicking of whoever made these bad drugs. Because really, that's pretty messed up.

Also, Sydney's lockout laws claimed their first victim with Exit At Spice Cellar, Darkside dropped an incredible eclectic mix for the Modcast series for download, you can watch Daft Punk's Grammy performance, and Pulse Ibiza are hiring interns for summer 2014.

Max Vangeli is a force to be reckoned with from his extensive tours hitting some of the worl'd biggest festivals and arenas to his output of popular House anthems and well-received remixes of Ellie Goulding, Pendulum, and more.  Described by MTV as "one of the most promising artists for 2011" he has undoubtedly proven his talents and abilites in the realm of DJing and production.  We had a chance to catch up with Max just after the release of his latest track "Grim" along with Danny Ray to discuss the collaboration, making music and touring with his good friend AN21, how he got started in the electronic music scene, and what else he has planned for 2014.

You used to play rock music in college. What initially sparked your interest in DJing and producing and how did you get started? I always came back to Moldova during summers to visit my relatives, and dance music was always big there and I slowly started clubbing and realized how much I actually loved it!

How did you get into progressive house? Do you have any interest in exploring other genres of electronic music when it comes to production? I was always sort of a melody guy because I like to feel that emotional vibe in the club, but yeah, I'm always interested in trying new things as long as there is still a little bit of melody involved.

You and Danny Ray teamed up to produce your new single "Grim" - how did this come about? Have you two worked together in the past? I've known Danny for many years - all the way back to the Laidback Luke forum. We have been friends for a long time and always planned to do something, and it sort of finally came about. Danny is a very talented producer and I was happy to be working with him.

You've been working with your best friend AN21 for years now – what have been some of your highlights DJing/producing as a team? I would say traveling together because we had so many fun moments and memories. It's crazy how many shows we actually did side by side. I feel like we know everything about each other now.

What would be your dream collaboration? I would love to collaborate with The Prodigy for sure! I have always loved them so much!

If you had to choose one, what would you say has been the most gratifying moment of your career so far? Doing a a full length album on SIZE this early in my career. I sort of got that out of the way!

What is on the horizon for Max Vangeli? Lots of solo work on SIZE and a lot of releases. Focusing on my Radio show as well, "CODE" Radio.
