Lawrence Lee, a.k.a. Total Fitness, is a New York-based DJ and producer. He is a rising talent from a new generation of producers coming out of the New York City underground. His debut EP is set for release in May on Curses’ new label, Safer At Night. We had a chance to catch up with Lawrence to chat about how he got started as a DJ, his debut EP and plans for the future. Give his exclusive mix a listen and catch him downstairs at Le Baron on Saturday nights.
For those who don’t already know, can you tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Lawrence and I was born in New York but grew up for the most part in Jersey. I also spent a lot of time in Brazil because my family is from Sao Paulo. At 18 I moved to the Bronx for university and a year later I was in Manhattan and I've been living here since.
Can you explain how the name "Total Fitness" came about? I felt like I was always suited to the type of lifestyle you lead when you work as a DJ, even before I was doing this. Growing up, I never slept at night and was always obsessed with music, spending hours on hours downloading tons of random tracks off Napster. Remember Napster? Total Fitness refers my being naturally suited for the job, I guess. Plus, it's kind of cheeky.
How did you get into DJing? I started DJing because of my good friend, Phil Chung. Phil now runs the amazing label, Basement Floor Records, with Tajh Morris. He was always cool with having people over when we were still in school and he would be playing records. One day, he showed me around the decks and I just never stopped. I started out as a Hip Hop/Open format DJ in New York. It taught me a lot about being a good DJ, about how to cut and scratch well enough, but also beyond mechanics. It taught me about being well-versed in every genre for any occasion.
Have you always been into electronic music or has your style evolved over time? I've always been into all types of music whether it was electronic or not, didn't matter to me… but as a kid growing up in and around New York, Hip Hop was the biggest presence in my life. As a DJ, I think even after making the transition to playing House and Techno, my tastes are always changing and developing.
You’re from around here, how has the scene in New York evolved over the past few years and do you think it’s been for the better or worse? It's definitely gotten bigger, but better or worse? Who's to say?
Where have you been playing recently? I DJ regularly at Le Baron on Saturdays and just ended a residence at TBA Brooklyn with Abu Ashley. In the next week or so I'm also playing at Bossa Nova Civic Club and Le Bain at the top of Standard Hotel. DJing at Marquee on New Year's Day and hearing my tracks on that sound system was great (shout to Mel Debarge…Bx Borough!). It could be one of the best rooms to play in New York and it's a perfect size for a bigger room, with a great layout and great sound.
What are some dream gigs? If i had to name a specific club, maybe Watergate or DC 10. I would really love to play Movement in Detroit.
What labels would you like to work with in the future? Other than releasing more material on Safer at Night - Circus, and Desolat, Pets and Tsuba are great too but I'm not really making music with any specific labels in mind.
You’re debut EP is coming out on Curses’ label, Safer At Night. Tell us a bit about releasing with Safer At Night and how the production process has been. It's a three track EP with the third track being a little more unconventional. That's the format we're looking at for the majority of the SAN releases. "Finger Box" is spooky but still uptempo and dance floor driven while "45th and Broadway" is a wonky modern twist on a more classic house sound. "Everything Positive" is really weird and doesn't have a 4-to-the-floor structure but still takes influence from techno while playing off a hip-hop element. It's my nod to where I'm coming from.
I'm really excited about Safer At Night and I'm blessed to be a part of it. I met Luca (Curses) at a Redbull event we both DJed that my friend Khaled had organized but really started to become cool through DKDS (Alex and Chris...mutual friends of Luca and I) who are releasing the second EP on Safer at Night. We all see eye to eye on a lot of things and felt like there was a gap in New York for what we wanted to do musically. Now the four of us are sailing the proverbial Safer at Night boat together! We're really looking to build something homegrown in New York, with music we believe in. Walker and Royce and my good friend Michael Baltra also have releases scheduled soon! Also look out for Safer At Night club nights coming very soon.
Tell us about your approach on the exclusive mix you made for us. It's a live mix I did in my home studio. I tried to abbreviate a 4-5 hour set I would play out into a 1-2 hour mix.
What else is on the horizon for Total Fitness? Reality TV, and a leaked sex tape! Total Fitness flavored gushers and lunch boxes.
