Police Issue Warning Over Dodgy Superman Pills

Something very important for UK clubbers to take heed of: Scottish Police have have issued an alert over pink superman pills currently in circulation in the west of the country, saying that tests have shown that the pills contain PMA (or methoxyamphetamine), a chemical similar to ecstasy but more toxic.

Unfortunately this is not a humourous issue like the batch of 'chicken pills' in Australia last year - pills containing PMA can be deadly and were responsible for a string of deaths across the UK last year. If you are unsure about any pills, best to play it safe with Pill Reports.

Using only analogue gear, the brand new Berlin-based live techno act ,made up of Bloody Mary and Attan dubbed The Jaydes, are quietly but steadily helping bring back the sounds of techno that have been forgotten in the post millennium age. They recently finished up their debut self titled LP, out on February 10th, and are gearing up for their first album tour as a duo. To celebrate, The Jaydes are giving away their track "Hidden Plesure" from the new "Wilde Liebe" LP, which celebrates 10 years of the Wilde Agency, one of dance music's foremost booking agencies. So we caught up wiht Bloody Mary and Attan to find out a bit more about their decision to go analogue, the importance of a good agent, find out about their setup, and the duo reveal more about their upcoming album tour. Read on, and be sure to download The Jaydes "Hidden Pleasure" below.

Why do you only use analogue studio machines for your music production? As we both grown up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, we were at first looking for the particular type of sound that was used and made in this period, and what best than the original equipment?
We discovered then that with analog machines you enter a different workflow that we found more spontaneous, and we finally reached the coloured sound that we were aiming for.

Does this mean you don’t use Ableton or any other DAW? For all those analogue instruments we needed a recorder and did not want to use tape recorder. Ableton Live is doing the job perfectly. We are recording every instrument on a different channel, and re-use these recordings to do our final mix-down.

Can you walk us through your setup a bit? We are both big fans of Roland equipment; we own few TRs and a Juno synthesizer. These are all plugged to a Patch-bay that is connected to our vintage mixer and to our sound card.

I understand you have a tour planed following the February release of your self-titled LP. Can you tell us more about that? Where are you planning on touring, and what will your live setup look like? Our album tour is being planned and confirmed as we speak, thanks to Wilde Agency for their amazing job by the way. We will be going to France, England, America and more. At the moment our set up will look like a Roland TR-909 and 70, Electribe ES1, microphone and MPC 1000, but this subject to change by adding or swapping some instruments to keep the Live surprising depending of the club or festival where we will be performing.

How long have you been with Wilde? Our profile on Wilde agency got introduced to the clubs and promoters following the first glimpse and first release of our album in October 2013. Mary was already part of the Wilde roster for 3 years.

How much and in what way does having a good booking agency help the artist? The booking agency does not matter, there is not bad and good agency, what matters is to have really close bonds with your booking agent. It is teamwork, and to make it successful you need to collaborate with someone who believes in you and support you and your projects.

Did you write “Hidden Pleasure” specifically for Wilde Liebe? We had just finished our album, which is release on the 10th of February 2014 on Dame-Music, when Wilde contacted us about The "Wilde Liebe" compilation project; it was a perfect timing so we started working on it straight away.

What was the thought process behind the track? We worked first on the lead chords and we build up the track around it adding drums and other synthesizers.

The Jaydes debut self titled album will be out on February 10th. In the meantime, be sure to grab a copy of Wilde Liebe compilation, which celebrates 10 years of the Wilde Agency. 16 artists from the roster have come together for the LP with all new material, including artists like Djuma Soundsystem, Ian Pooley, Tiefschwarz and Tim Xavier: https://soundcloud.com/wilde-agency/sets/wilde-liebe

XOOXITY is coming… We’re Expecting Big Things

$

Yes please! A new festival is coming to town and it sounds like something for the stompers. Sure we get ‘festivals’ that pop-up in our news feed every month or so, but the company behind it, is known for superbly organised events and festivals. It’s what they do best.  Thanks in advance, Hilltop Live, but we’ll be expecting big things.  Here’s why…

XOOXITY is pronounced ‘Zoo City’ – that’s the award winning novel by local writer, Lauren Beukes. The press release describes it as characters exploring a grimy, dystopian Johannesburg.  “Through magical-realism and ‘animalled’ people, we experience the primal electricity that statics beneath the inner-city streets.”  Sounds exotic, original and different – I’m interested. Hilltop Live is the force behind Oppikoppi, RAMFest, the Old Mutual Music in the Gardens and many other awesome events – now they’re bringing something special for the electro lovers of Joburg.

Irrespective of whether he’s your thing or not, the UK’s, DJ Fresh has made a name for himself in the techno/electro/drum and bass world.  He was responsible for that overplayed song with Rita Ora – ‘Hot Right Now’ – which was the first drum and bass single to hit number one in the UK.  These days he’s giving us trippy, reggae-heavy gems like the track below… and the music videos, as always, are worth a watch.

Keeping us in suspense, they’ll be announcing the rest of the line up over the next few weeks. The first local act on the bill is Bittereinder– I’m not complaining, as long as they give us a generous and quality selection of local DJ’s too – it’s not like there’s a shortage. Joining Bittereinder at both legs of XOO XITY will be Cape Town DJ / Producer – Sibot& Toyota. Sibot is a household name both locally and internationally and has set the benchmark, blurring the boundaries between Hip Hop and electronic music, between live and DJ.

Music aside, they’re incorporating art and tech into the festival.  There will be 3D projection mapping, digital-graffiti and interactive live glass – whatever that is, it sounds like the perfect backdrop to a night of good music in the city.

The Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown will transform into XOOXITY in May – a great venue for a gigantic jam at that time of the year when it is less likely to rain. The venue neighbours the Sci Bono Centre, which will host the tech part of the festival.  A conference called Tech4Africa will be hosting workshops for the much-loved geeks (they make stuff like 3D mapping!) while Cape Town gets started with a pre-party, before it all peaks in the dancing city on 3 May.

Sounds like we’d be right to expect big things at XOOXITY – for R500 per ticket, it’d better be amazing. The ticket gets you a cashless card with R50 credit loaded on it to use at bars and food stalls, and another R1000 gets you into the Sci Bono Centre for the conference.

Navigate to their WEBSITE for ticket sales and further info on the event.

1:30am Lockouts Begin In Sydney This Weekend As NSW Government Passes Draconian Laws

If you live in Sydney don't expect to casually pop out from the Andrew Weatherall or Michelle Owen gigs and head over to The Spice Cellar after 1:30am this weekend, because tonight the NSW Government passed the new draconian laws that Barry O'Farrell proposed only last week, which will see 1.30am lockouts and 3am ‘last drinks’ in the CBD and Kings Cross precinct being enforced, as well as 10pm closing times for bottle shops.

The Greens and independent MP Alex Greenwich did not support the proposals but with support from the opposition, the government had the numbers in the upper house, reports news.com.au. Greenwich said that “normal parliamentary process was abandoned to prevent scrutiny of the legislation and time for debate."

O'Farrell claims that the new laws will "make our streets safer."

The Sydney clubbing community has spoken out against these new laws, including DJs, club owners and promoters. Read what they have to say here.

Watch Eclectic Method's 'A Brief History of Sampling'

Eclectic Method, aka Jonny Wilson, is known for his projects involving spliced clips of TV and film set to dance and hip-hop beats that he remixes and mixes together on the fly. Now, he's turned his attention towards the history of sampling in this 3-minute video, which you can watch here.

Starting off with the Mellotron, or the "original sampler" made famous by the Beatles, who used it for the intro of "Strawberry Fields" (watch Paul McCartney run through that process here), the video uses the art of sampling to tell the story of the most famous sample, the Amen Break, heading right thorough the 60′s, then on to break-heavy classics that became the underpinnings of hip-hop during the 80′s and 90′s. Running through several of the most iconic beats, breaks and drum fills, the video illustrates the powerful presence of certain sounds and rhythms that have inspired songs ranging from hip-hop, drum 'n bass, break-beats, big beat, pop and other genres.

Perhaps his most watch project, Eclectic Method also spliced together music, footage and dialogue from many of Quinten Tarantino's films (who himself is highly notorious for "sampling" or borrowing scenes from many old films, books and graphic novels for his movies) in the project above, which again, is performed live.

Cape Town needed a BASSMINT. Within a month of opening the night at Jackal 'n Hide, there were queues running around the block from 9 p.m. something pretty unheard of in a city where venues tend to fill up at the stroke of midnight.

When the draconian liquor law was passed, and trading hours shifted down to close at 2 a.m. instead of 4; some venues suffered to the brink of closure. BASSMINT flourished. Having established itself as the place to start your Friday, people stayed, people danced and they came back for more.

Some of the magical moments captured at previous BASSMINT nights at the Jackal. Event details follow.

Fresh Blood: Total Fitness

Lawrence Lee, a.k.a. Total Fitness, is a New York-based DJ and producer. He is a rising talent from a new generation of producers coming out of the New York City underground. His debut EP is set for release in May on Curses’ new label, Safer At Night. We had a chance to catch up with Lawrence to chat about how he got started as a DJ, his debut EP and plans for the future. Give his exclusive mix a listen and catch him downstairs at Le Baron on Saturday nights.

For those who don’t already know, can you tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Lawrence and I was born in New York but grew up for the most part in Jersey. I also spent a lot of time in Brazil because my family is from Sao Paulo. At 18 I moved to the Bronx for university and a year later I was in Manhattan and I've been living here since.

Can you explain how the name "Total Fitness" came about? I felt like I was always suited to the type of lifestyle you lead when you work as a DJ, even before I was doing this. Growing up, I never slept at night and was always obsessed with music, spending hours on hours downloading tons of random tracks off Napster. Remember Napster? Total Fitness refers my being naturally suited for the job, I guess. Plus, it's kind of cheeky.

How did you get into DJing? I started DJing because of my good friend, Phil Chung.  Phil now runs the amazing label, Basement Floor Records, with Tajh Morris. He was always cool with having people over when we were still in school and he would be playing records. One day, he showed me around the decks and I just never stopped. I started out as a Hip Hop/Open format DJ in New York. It taught me a lot about being a good DJ, about how to cut and scratch well enough, but also beyond mechanics. It taught me about being well-versed in every genre for any occasion.

Have you always been into electronic music or has your style evolved over time? I've always been into all types of music whether it was electronic or not, didn't matter to me… but as a kid growing up in and around New York, Hip Hop was the biggest presence in my life. As a DJ, I think even after making the transition to playing House and Techno, my tastes are always changing and developing.

You’re from around here, how has the scene in New York evolved over the past few years and do you think it’s been for the better or worse? It's definitely gotten bigger, but better or worse? Who's to say?

Where have you been playing recently? I DJ regularly at Le Baron on Saturdays and just ended a residence at TBA Brooklyn with Abu Ashley. In the next week or so I'm also playing at Bossa Nova Civic Club and Le Bain at the top of Standard Hotel. DJing at Marquee on New Year's Day and hearing my tracks on that sound system was great (shout to Mel Debarge…Bx Borough!). It could be one of the best rooms to play in New York and it's a perfect size for a bigger room, with a great layout and great sound.

What are some dream gigs? If i had to name a specific club, maybe Watergate or DC 10. I would really love to play Movement in Detroit.

What labels would you like to work with in the future? Other than releasing more material on Safer at Night - Circus, and Desolat, Pets and Tsuba are great too but I'm not really making music with any specific labels in mind.

You’re debut EP is coming out on Curses’ label, Safer At Night. Tell us a bit about releasing with Safer At Night and how the production process has been. It's a three track EP with the third track being a little more unconventional. That's the format we're looking at for the majority of the SAN releases. "Finger Box" is spooky but still uptempo and dance floor driven while "45th and Broadway" is a wonky modern twist on a more classic house sound. "Everything Positive" is really weird and doesn't have a 4-to-the-floor structure but still takes influence from techno while playing off a hip-hop element. It's my nod to where I'm coming from.

I'm really excited about Safer At Night and I'm blessed to be a part of it. I met Luca (Curses) at a Redbull event we both DJed that my friend Khaled had organized but really started to become cool through DKDS (Alex and Chris...mutual friends of Luca and I) who are releasing the second EP on Safer at Night. We all see eye to eye on a lot of things and felt like there was a gap in New York for what we wanted to do musically. Now the four of us are sailing the proverbial Safer at Night boat together! We're really looking to build something homegrown in New York, with music we believe in. Walker and Royce and my good friend Michael Baltra also have releases scheduled soon! Also look out for Safer At Night club nights coming very soon.

Tell us about your approach on the exclusive mix you made for us. It's a live mix I did in my home studio. I tried to abbreviate a 4-5 hour set I would play out into a 1-2 hour mix.

What else is on the horizon for Total Fitness? Reality TV, and a leaked sex tape! Total Fitness flavored gushers and lunch boxes.

Get Lost Releases Full WMC Lineup

One of Winter Music Conference’s most infamous parties has finally released its full lineup. For the first time ever, the party is going for 24 hours. Doors open at 5:00am on March 29th and partygoers will be greeted with an opening set by Sasha. Year after year, Crosstown Rebels’ Get Lost boasts one of the biggest and best lineups on the WMC event roster and this year is no exception. Like last year, it is being held at Ice Palace West (former Karu & Y), an amazing venue that has both outdoor and indoor space. A personal favorite, Ice Palace’s outdoor patio is a tropical dream and the indoor section is all about dark basement vibes.

This year’s lineup includes all-stars like DJ Harvey, DJ Three, Heidi, Kevin Saunderson, DJ Tennis, Sasha, Subb-an, the Martinez Brothers, Thugfucker, Tiga, and many more. The ninth annual Get Lost is looking like the biggest and best one to date. DJ Harvey's After-Hours Discotheque is a new addition to the party. One of the indoor rooms will be transformed into an all night disco and Harvey will be playing a five-hour set, starting at midnight. I was lucky enough to attend Get Lost last year and couldn’t be more excited to be heading back for round two. With all the overlapping events this year, it’s pretty damn essential that you make time in your busy schedule to get lost.

Lineup:
Ahprohead
Bill Patrick
Bob Moses (live)

BBC Radio 1 host and genre-defying UK artist Mosca is making his way to Australia this March and April, playing a series of club shows in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, thanks to Finely Tuned.

A purveyor of deep house, tech-house, techno, grime, bass music and everything in between, Mosca, real name Tom Reid, first came to attention via his debut 'Square One EP' on the Night Slugs imprint and since then has released tracks on esteemed labels Rinse, 3024, and his most recent 'A Thousand Years' Wait' on Delsin Records in October last year. His style on the decks is just as free and wide-ranging as his productions and he's been known to drop everything from 2-step to hip-hop to slo mo house. Reid also hosts his 'In New DJs We Trust' show every second Thursday on BBC Radio 1, showcasing the best new undergound dancehall, grime and garage sounds.

Reid is also an in-demand remixer - check out his recent reworking of Trus'Me's 'Somebody'. Dates for Mosca's tour are below, with venue details still TBC - stay tuned to Pulse for info coming soon.
