We Love... Pulse Takeover In Review

We Love… has been at the forefront of Ibizan nightlife for many years, hosting the most on point artists at Space every Sunday. So when the opportunity arose for us to team up with the forward-thinking brand three times over the summer, it seemed only right that we put together a line-up that stuck to the same principles. The success of the opening fiesta set the bar very high, which only drove us to aim higher this time.To do so, we hand picked a selection of artists who we believed would pull something special out of the (record) bag for us, including Groove Armada, Jackmaster, Dusky and We Love...residents PRB Streetgang.

After digesting the surroundings of the We Love... and Pulse decorated terrace, attentions were immediately caught by Dusky who were giving the FunktionOne a full work out for the full hour and a half they had to showcase their sound. Every clubber got down to business from the get go, with the centre platform becoming a focal point, as the terrace gathered momentum until reaching its capacity at around 1:30am. Dusky's collection of no-nonsense, deep bassy house was a fine representation of the duo's sound with Dusky's 'Nobody Else’ sealing a raw, tribal feel on the dancefloor.

Before settling in the terrace for a few hours with Groove Armada and Jackmaster, a trip to the main room offered in-demand Americans Pleasurekraft. Compared to the terrace the main room had fewer clubbers on the floor but just as much energy ran though the blood streams of them all. In your face house music is what was offered up from Pleasurekraft who controlled their crowd expertly.  The anticipation surrounding the terrace spilled onto the outside terrace as Groove Armada's arrival drew closer. When their set started, they wasted no time in getting down, manipulating and crafting their classic ‘I See You Baby’ vocal alongside tracks of the past few months.

The marriage of old and new ran consistantly for the duration of their set, with the pair working in tangent stunningly. As if to prove they hadn't lost touch with the standards they set back in their early days, they stepped up and proved how much they have evolved their sound over the past couple of years to something more modern and up to date; playing ‘Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam’ into ‘Jordan Peak – It’s Time (Argy Rude Dub)’ and ‘Nomad – I Wanna Give You Devotion’ into ‘Chicken Lips - He Not In (Groove Armada's Dub Reconstruction)’ which gave the terrace more and more energy as the hours ticked by. The highlight of the night came from the pair’s final track, arguably the best they have produced,  'Superstylin’ which got the credit it deserved with a sit down from the crowd.

As Groove Armada handed over proceedings to Jackmaster, it was time for a cool down and to see what was being displayed on the after dark terrace. The seating arrangements differ at We Love… as the majority of the dancefloor is taken up by lounge sofas creating a smooth and chilled atmosphere. The tracks Mr.Doris, DJ E.A.S.E and Negghead played stayed in line with this attitude; with steady basslines and heavenly vocals rolling all night long, giving everyone time off from the rawness of the indoors.

Nothing all night even came close to the rawness of Boddika. He messed dangerously with the minds of many in the main room as clubbers from other continents got to grips with the sporadic drum patterns and bass heavy tracks Boddika has become renowned for over the years. He seemed to be enjoying his time in the main room playing ‘Joy O & Boddika – Swims’, a track that is sure to be heard again next Monday when the veteran DJ performs at Circoloco at DC-10.

Getting stuck back into the terrace around 4am, Jackmaster lived up to his reputation, bringing a laid-back, party atmosphere to the dancefloor. His encyclopedic knowledge of party starters was on full display as he reached for 80s bangers and unreleased dubs alike. A surprise track in Jackmaster's set came in the shape of ‘DJ Hyperactive – Wide Open (Len Faki DJ Edit)’ a monster track that ensured every clubber was on their toes.

Close friends Foamo and A1 Bassline took to the main room, coming together despite their differing production styles to play a set that found a common ground sonically in the shape of a collection of hard to the floor house music and uplifting experimental house. The late Romanthony's ‘Let Me Show You Love’ went down a treat with the dancers.

With only a few hours of the night remaining Jackmaster was met by a round of applause as he finished his set and let PBR Streetgang take control of the terrace. PBR have made a name for themselves as residents at We Love… booth being respectable artists and DJ’s in their own right, Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe played the chunkier, sexier side of deep house.

We Love… continues to be an essential part of the Ibizan nightlife. With multiple top tier artists being offered up to the Ibiza massive week in week out it’s hard to see where the night will ever go wrong. We look forward to returning to host the terrace again for the closing party on the 29th September with Fatboy Slim, 2manydjs, Groove Armada, James Zabiela, Simian Mobile Disco and many more.
