A new startup called Lightwave is developing wearable technology that will provide analytics about the audience at live music events. Started by Rana June who is best known for being one of the first big iPad DJs and the co-founder and VP of marketing at Medialets, the project is a wearable wristband that measures user activity including movement, audio levels, and temperature. The data is provided to live performers so they can more accurately assess the audience.

“When you’re a performer, you have no idea if the guy in the back of the room is having fun or not,” states Rana June. Attendees can unlock certain events based on different activity levels creating unique experiences for each show.

The plan is for artists or brand sponsors to distribute Lightwave bracelets ahead of an event and then collect them back at the end. Rana June explains, “When you enter a concert, instead of putting a paper wristband on someone, you put an intelligent wristband on them.”

The new technology debuted during SXSW 2014 at Pepsi’s “bioreactive” concert featuring A-Trak.
