Nico Purman's 'Art of Memory'

Running an imprint in today's over-saturated climate is no easy feat - as the internet floods itself with brand new music, more than just a quality aesthetic - and great tunes - is required to stand out. Nico Purman - the Argentinian house music producer who has frequented the likes of Crosstown, Curle and more - has embarked on this adventure with Art of Memory, a new imprint that focuses on the artistic, creative side of music, ranging from vinyl pressing to art work's hand designed by Nico's partner Melina Pecharki. After dropping first release Logan's Dream on the imprint, Nico has weaved together a special mix for us and explains more about his brave decision to  start his label below...

Nico thanks for joining us. What was the motivation for you to start your own imprint? The motivation was all the unfinished music I had that needed a proper home and to combine this with the artworks from Melina Pecharki,my partner, she´s in charge of all graphic works, covers, and also a bit of A&R. I showed many different tracks to her and she selected 4 and I finished those. It took me a while to find the right mixdown for each track and specially with Logan´s Dream, that has so many different sounds, it was hard to make them fit together.

So main motivation was to make something that goes together music and artwork, we also work in the same space, and exchange and discuss a lot the projects we have in mind and then check how we would like to present it, cover materials, finishing’s, how many tracks we put on vyinl, A side or B side.

What is the ethos behind the label? To champion new music? Our idea is to combine good artworks with good music, but we´re not following any trend or style, we just want to release the stuff we really like. Every cover will be different and every release will be different and we try to keep each record very special. And to release a nice package of well done covers and good sounding vinyls. We decided to put 3 tracks on vinyl as the A side Logan´s Dream track sounds better and more open in 45 RPM and takes the whole A side, that´s why we had to leave the track Slow Burner to digital exclusive. We could do 2 EP´s with 2 tracks each but we preferred to do this way, because the 4 tracks together works better than splitted and it tells the whole story that is resumed on the artwork cover.

The first release 'Logan's Dream' is produced by yourself - but what's coming up? Can you reveal anything about future releases and plans? Im working on a second release, We´re selecting the tracks as I did many unfinished stuff and recorded sessions, then I need to arrange them and mix. It will be on a different direction. And next releases could be by other artists but we need to find the right music, it doesn’t matter style and it doesnt have to be on the same sound or direction as the first release.

The new EP is being described as a your most melodic work yet and your influences are cited as New Order and Giorgio Moroder - what is it about this period of music that interests you and offers inspiration? Its not about a certain period that interest me, I always listen music from many different periods so it affects me in a certain way. Every track has a different inspiration, Logan´s Dream has guitar feedbacks atmospheres that could relate with New Order, but not in the same way, really. I was listening a lot to The Smiths, and I became instantly a big fan of Johnny Marr, his way of playing guitar its so melodic, arpeggiated, and beautiful, that really captured me. I´ve always been fascinated by those artists who made everything we hear right now.

Finally, while you're running this label, can we expect to see more productions from you on the likes of Curle and Crosstown? Right now I'm focused on finishing the tracks for the next ep on Art Of Memory but could it be in the future. I never planned too much ok i´ll release here or there, I prefer to finish the tracks and then if it swits certain label I like then i´ll send to them too.

Taking care of the label consumes me a lot of time, also doing the music, and checking every step from vinyl manufacturing, check the masters, check the test pressings, contracts, etc. It´s exciting, stressing and I will learn a lot of this difficult to understand market.

The Blend: Little Dragon

Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion), Fredrik Wallin (bass), Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards) and Erik Bodin (drums) collectively have taken the world by storm since unleashing themselves to the world as the band we know as Little Dragon formed back in 1996. This edition of The Blend series we have Little Dragon and exciting news from the Electronic Soul Synth-Pop band about a new album tour on the way that naturally gets us a ‘little’ excited.

One could expect that the Swedish band will be showcasing their very unique blend of R&B, new wave, Electronica and Experimental Pop in true Little Dragon style – “An alternatively propulsive and delicate sound dictated by strains of electro and striking vocal coo of Yukimi Nagano” said Spin, couldn’t agree more. Here is Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) from Little Dragon.

The band's name was inspired by the "Little Dragon" nickname Nagano earned due to the "fuming tantrums" she used to throw while recording in the studio. "It's a little exaggerated but there is some truth in it", Nagano said.

Little Dragon's successes have had them touring around the globe with their very unique sound and look respectively. The music video's they have released will demonstrate that which include track names "Test", "Twice", "Constant Surprises", "After the Rain" and "Fortune". The video for "Twice" was directed by award-winning Swedish filmmaker Johannes Nystrom. Here is the music video for track name "Twice" which also acts as a pilot for short film "Dreams from the Woods".

DJ Sneak vs. Joris Voorn: More Twitter Feuding

$

DJ Sneak and Twitter feuds have become practically synonymous these days, as the self proclaimed House Gangster has taken to the social media platform yet again  - this time to let off steam at Joris Voorn.

The outspoken DJ has taken to the platform several times before to unleash insults on anyone he feels isn’t ‘keeping it real,’ including a specialdisregard for ‘laptop DJs'. This time it all got started when Sneak, Derrick Carter and Mark Farina were playing a back-to-back-to-back at Pacha Ibiza’s Insane last Friday night. Voorn, a well-known technophile, was slated to take over after the trio had finished. Just a few minutes before he was scheduled to play, however, Voorn’s manager attempted to clear some space so Joris could get set up, and was told exactly where he could stick his artist’s hardware.

Though it didn’t end there. Well, not for fans of Joris anyway, who came out en mass to support their favorite jock, unleashing some very personal retorts at Mr Sneak.

Though being Sneak, he had a few comebacks of his own.

For his part, Joris has tried to bury the hatchet and put the drama behind him, as expressed in a Facebook post (which you can read in its entirety here:)

And while it seems Joris is past the situation, one thing remains clear - Sneak isn't likely to cut 'laptop DJs' slack anytime soon.

Various Artists - NexGen Music 'Northern Lights' EP

$

NexGen Music brings you a four track EP, Northern Lights, with tracks from Faible, Clart & mSdos, Physical Illusion & Sunny Crimea and Reborn.

The EP is kicked off by Faible and his enchanting ‘Northern Lights’. Faible has set himself quite a task in living up to the name of this track but the execution is perfect. The track is highly reminiscent of the sort of sounds that were coming out of the scene in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

This track, like ‘Disco Inferno’, is all about hitting a soulful vibe and really taking things back to basics. No overpowering bass and no overly layered kicks and snares, just a well crafted track using basic instruments. It’s been along time since you would have heard a piano being used in its purest and simplest form like Faible does here.

We are then sent to ‘Disco Inferno’ by Clart and mSdos. Once again the vibe is soulful, the composition is simple and it really hits a jazzy note like ‘Northern Lights.’ The tempo is picked up a lot more by the energetic percussion and use of an amen break which builds up the EP nicely.

You may be forgiven for wanting a change of tempo within both of these tracks but if you’re a pure junglists that won’t bother you at all. You could argue the second drop takes things in a slightly darker direction and that will be enough to please most. However, once again the track uses instruments in a way that is not done too often now-a-days: in the way they were originally used.

Next up Sunny Crimea and Physical Illusion tell us ‘Something About Love’. This track is in many ways very similar to the opening track but with a higher emphasis on the lower basslines. The track follows the pattern that has been set throughout the EP and is all about building atmosphere without losing the energy.

If you were hoping for the energy to be raised to new levels then you may disappointed. However, if you have an appreciation for simple compositions with perfected sounds this again hits a jazz sun-lounge vibe perfect for these summery days.

The last track entitled ‘Mario In Computer Hell’ by Reborn drastically changes direction. A strange hybrid of blippy and glitchy electro stabs with deep whirling bass may leave some listeners slightly confused.

As of yet, I’m undecided on my opinion. Although it is well produced, it just doesn’t fit the vibe of the EP and is probably a change of tone too drastic to really work. It is definitely the sort of track that will divide opinion which, in many ways, is a good thing.

A really strong EP from this collection of artists with some fantastic hybrid sounds. Good changes of pace and styles definitely cater for wider audiences and there probably aren’t many people out there who can’t get along with at least one of these tracks. NexGen really could be a force to be reckoned with in 2013.

Miley Opens Up About Controversial VMA Performance

After much speculation, Miley Cyrus has finally opened up about her controversial performance along with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV VMAs. Her motivation was simple – to make history. In an interview with MTV News the week after the awards show, she compared herself to Madonna and Britney Spears, who she claims have also intentionally done outrageous and newsworthy performances in an effort to make a statement and be remembered in the media. At the same time, she acts surprised that people are still talking about her performance days later and claims that she hasn’t even been thinking about it herself.

"I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music? Madonna's done it. Britney's done it. Every VMA performance, that's what you're looking for; you're wanting to make history. Me and Robin the whole time we said, 'you know we're about to make history right now.' What's amazing is I think now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it. They're over thinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it 'cause that's just me."

Dusky: Gratifying Moments

$

Over the past few years, Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell, better known as Dusky, have risen into the international spotlight with the duo having been asked to create an Essential Mix in 2012 and now embarking on a North American tour, playing in fourteen different cities including two festivals.  The London-based duo is known for their original work, which been supported by the likes of Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Disclosure, Diplo, and even Calvin Harris and their remixes of tracks such as Hot Chip's "Night & Day" and Justin Martin's "Don't Go."  We had a chance to catch up with Dusky just as they are starting their tour to discuss some of the stops on the tour they are especially looking forward to playing, their shows in Ibiza this summer, and what they've been working on in the studio.

You will be playing in fourteen different cities as part of your North American tour. Are there any you haven’t been to yet? Which ones are you especially looking forward to playing? Nick: We haven't been to most of cities to be honest. Last time we were over in the states we we're in Miami for most of the trip and only did a few other shows. San Francisco is supposed to have great parties so we're looking forward to that as well as Verboten in New York which has a really good reputation.

You’ve said in other interviews that a variety of factors such as classical and jazz music have influenced your work. What are some of your other musical influences that we might not already know about? Alfie: There are so many it's hard to pick out specifics. You may not know I'm a big fan of Brian Eno and Stravinsky, they have both had a big influence on me.

You played in Ibiza a few times this summer. What was that like? What have been the vibes on the island this season? Nick: Ibiza has been amazing for us this year. Our last show of the season for We Love at Space was one of our highlights of the summer. We were playing on the Terrace and you can get away with playing more classic tracks than you can normally can so it's been really fun. Paradise at DC10 was a great night too, it was totally packed.

What have been some of the major highlights of your summer season so far? Alfie: Apart from Ibiza I think the highlights have been Glastonbury festival and Parklife festival. There's nothing quite like playing Glastonbury. We stayed for the whole weekend and checked out some great music like Portishead and Bobby Womack. Parklife festival in Manchester was amazing too, the crowd had so much energy.

What would you say has been the most gratifying moment of your career so far? Nick: It's difficult to pick one moment but being asked to do an Essential Mix was very gratifying. As a dance music act it's a real benchmark in your career so it's incredibly satisfying to know you've reached that level.

You are well-known for your remixes in addition to your original productions. What constitutes a good remix to you? How do your remixes come about? Are you approached by specific artists or labels? Alfie: A good remix should add something to the original or take it in a different direction that the original track couldn't accomplish. We get sent lots of remix requests from various record labels or artist's managers. We only take on the ones we think we'll really be able to add something to otherwise we're better off spending our time focusing on originals.

What producers have really been impressing you of late that we might not have heard about yet? Nick: Paleman is making some great music at the moment as is South London Ordnance. Definitely check those guys out.

Alfie : Banton AKA Hardhouse Banton has switched up his style as well recently and we’ve been playing some of his new tracks a lot; they really work on the dancefloor.

What can we catch you guys doing in your free time when you’re not touring or producing? Alfie: Just the usual stuff, going to the pub, meeting friends, eating out. We go out raving too though we don’t get the chance to go out so much in London these days as we’re away a lot at the moment.

What’s on the horizon for Dusky after your North American tour? Are you working on any releases we should keep an eye out for? Nick: We've got a four track EP coming out on AUS music at the end of September that we're really excited about so keep an eye out for that.

We Love... September Preview

We Love... Space September Preview

August is finally past us, and here in Ibiza, that means many of the island’s inhabitants are breathing a collective sigh of relief. The mass invasion of tourists has started to subside, the weather is cooling off, and many of the island’s parties are pulling out all the stops for one last sprint to the finish line.

And if it’s a race to the finish, the top dogs in the game are the curators of the island’s longest running fiesta, We Love…, who are headed full bore into the last few weeks of the Ibiza season. With artists like Fatboy Slim, 2manyDJs, Skudge, Derrick May, Clude VonStroke, Jimmy Edgar and an Innervisions Showcase, We Love… are bringing it all home in style.

With just four dates left this season, Pulse goes in depth at We Love…’s massive September lineup to give you a play-by-play breakdown of what’s sure to be the best month of them all.

September 8

Before the dirtybird boss spread his wings to start his own night, Claude VonStroke was a We Love… resident and favorite. We Love… and Claude have been credited for bringing much of the bass sound that’s dominated so much of the island over the last few years, proving once again why this Sunday bonanza is one of the most forward thinking and influential parties around. Claude will be headlining the cavernous Discoteca, while over in the main terrace, headline duties fall to one of the most influential and storied figures in all of dance music, Derrick May.

Known as The Innovator, Derrick was part of the Belleville Three, alongside fellow giants Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson (who will be gracing the We Love… halls on September 15), and over the years has been responsible for some of the biggest innovations in dance music, including the seminal hit, ‘Strings Of Life.’ Derrick will be going back to back with Detroit’s Jimmy Edgar, who’s made massive waves in the Detroit techno landscape in recent years. Probably why We Love… chose Jimmy to team up with Carter for their recent We Love… Detroit two disc compilation. This is a rare opportunity to see one of electronic music’s most legendary figures go back to back with one of it’s newest prodigies – not to be missed.

Always one to bring a wide range of forward thinking artists to the table, September 8 sees Little Boots and company heading to El Salon. Little Boots recently released her sophomore album, Nocturnes, earlier this summer, receiving incredibly high marks from just about every major music outlet there is. Her sound is silky smooth, atmospheric synth pop, and her original vocals shine through, leaving listeners tingling. Not only will she perform in El Salon with Moon Boots, Kitt Proudfoot, Dief and Baker, but as an extra special treat, she’s even giving everyone a performance in the Sunset Terrace too.

Check out the incredible acoustic version of ‘All For You’ from Nocturnes here:

September 15

Like we mentioned above, this week sees another of electronic music’s most notorious figures step up to the We Love… decks in the Terraza, as The Elevator, Kevin Saunderson, returns to the White Isle to spread his magic with us. Though it hardly stops there, as also in the Terraza, hosted by the Just Jack crew for the evening is Heidi, who’s bound to keep the place jackin’ all damn night. If that wasn’t enough, topping things off in the Terraza is Poker Flat Recordings boss Steve Bug. Poker Flat has been one of the most influential techno and house imprints of the last decade, showing no signs of slowing, and Bug is the man responsible for it all. It might be tough to pull yourself out of the Terraza with that kind of a lineup, but in case you’re so inclined…

Over in the Discoteca, hosted by Chew The Fat!, longtime We Love… resident James Zabiela will be keeping it rocking and stomping with friends Simian Mobile Disco and Boddika, but be sure to get there early for Paul Woolford’s Special Request Live, sure to be a real treat. Chart topper Duke Dumont will be handling things over in the Sunset Terrace, still rushing full steam ahead after his bigger than big ‘Need U (100%).’ And for those moments you’re in need of some chill out time, collaborative effort of Michelle Drew and Phillipp Hill, Drew Hill, will be putting on a live show full of summery, ambient beats.

September 22

After four incredible shows last year, the Innervisions crew will be once again returning to the Terraza for a one-off performance of spectacular proportions, with Henrik Schwarz and Âme both bringing their live sets, along with Dixon and Marcus Worgull. Brainchild of Dixon and Âme, Innervisions has been on fire for the last several years. Their ethos rides in releasing only four or five EPs a year on the Innervisions label, choosing to only put out high quality, timeless music, rather than mass produced, forgettable fodder. This ethos shines through in everything they do, as everyone in the crew’s live performances is constantly a sight to behold. Last year saw the Innervisions bunch pull no punches with live back to back sets, taking the night anywhere they felt like, and you can be sure everyone in attendance was happy to follow. Word has it that We Love… have once again given the crew free reign to program the night as they please, so be ready for anything.

Over in El Salon, one of the island’s favorites is getting sent into marriage in style, as Eclectic Avenue Records (E.A.R.) is hosting the unofficial reception for PBR Streetgang’s Bonar Bradberry, who will just have gotten hitched that week. Sure to be a special one!

September 29 – Closing Party!

This is it folks! The big kahuna. The party we look forward to each summer with the most bittersweet regards. Sad to see the Sunday institution wrap things up for a long, silent winter, but thrilled to have one more fantastic go with the whole crew.

For the closing party, We Love… is welcoming the return of Fatboy Slim, who absolutely smashed the Space birthday party (which you can read about here). Fatboy is a born entertainer, and the Discoteca loved him as much as he seemed to love it, as Fatboy jumped up on the decks, blew an air horn, and did just about anything else to get the crowd as pumped as possible, and boy did it work. However this time around, Fatboy Slim is coming to rock the Pulse Radio Terraza, along with 2manyDJs, who are also returning after a smashing birthday show, working the crowd over with an incredibly flawless mix and mash of electro, disco, house, techno, and everything in between, even sneaking in a little classic trance to everyone’s awe. It was a show I won’t be forgetting anytime soon, and it should be an even bigger night for these superstars in the Terraza for the closing party.

Over in the Discoteca, Snowbombing takes over with James Zabiela and his Born Electric label, along with the one and only set from Blawan this season, and an extra special live set from both Simian Mobile Disco and Machinedrum, who’ll be keeping the crowd well on it’s toes with his heady brand of footwork and bass.

So there we have it! Four more weeks of We Love… at your fingertips. There’s no where else to be on a Sunday in September, but just in case you can’t make it to the island, look out for our upcoming weekly coverage leading up to the closing party madness!

Ketamine Users Have Livers Of 60 Year Old Alcoholics, Finds Study

Chinese doctors conducted a study recently which found that regular users of ketamine risk developing liver cancer.

During their research, the doctors discovered two K users suffering from liver fibrosis "leaving them with livers resembling those of 60-year-old alcoholics."

“If it goes untreated [liver fibrosis], say for three to five years, it may have developed into liver cancer by the time symptoms emerge and a transplant may be required,” liver expert Professor Grace Wong Lai-hung told the South China Morning Post.

The study examined 305 young ketamine users (180 of those female) who had taken the drug for six years and found that nearly all had greatly reduced bladder sizes. Despite bladder sizes increasing again amongst those who quit, doctors said "all patients had suffered irreversible damage" to their bladders.

So all those K-heads out there, take heed: Perhaps you need to think twice before racking up a massive line and abseiling down an epic K-hole?
