Anjunadeep 05 (Mixed by James Grant & Jody Wisternoff)

Various Artists (Mixed by James Grant & Jody Wisternoff)
Anjunadeep 05
[Anjunadeep]

The masterful deep house and progressive house label Anjunadeep wades into deeper waters this time around for their newest compilation, ‘Anjunadeep 05.’ Mixed by label head James Grant and the legendary Jody Wisternoff of Way Out West, the highly anticipated Anjunadeep 05 showcases captivating sounds across two discs of ambient electronica, deep house, modern garage, and techno. With tracks from Matt Lange, Andrew Bayer, Universal Solution, and more, the mixes brim with emotional and melodic resonances.

James Grant’s mix on disc one opens with chilled electronica, Croquet Club’s “Cardigan,” which is supported on BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. From that point on, disc one is packed with exclusive original tracks from Dusky, Vincenzo, Tom Middleton, Beckwith, and DAVI. Grant devises a theme of modern melodic deepness that follows through until the end. Andrew Bayer teams up with James Grant in “Living,” a soaked-in groove with percussive fills and a melancholic breakdown. The two also join forces to remix “It’s Cool” by Australian group The Presets, reconstructing the synth-pop original into a stripped-down hypnotic vocal piece, complemented with pianos. Rising talent Universal Solution, aka Gavin Holland, contributes with the dark and spacey “Osheen.” The deep bassline really drives the track throughout this slow-building progressive journey. His other track “Yukon” builds beautifully with ambience and a tough 909 percussion.

Responsible for some of the best deep house tracks of the past year, London duo Dusky make an appearance on the label that released their debut album with tracks “Nobody Else” and “Mr. Man,” supported by Sasha, among other artists. It is a downbeat, atmospheric track with heavy bass grooves and a piano refrain. Concluding the first disc is Solarity’s “Symbols,” summarizing the ambience of the entire mix.

Jody Wisternoff takes up mixing duties for disc two. With over 20 years of experience behind the decks, one cannot simply ignore his flexibility and skill as a producer. He is a musician with an appreciation as well as an ear for quality music. One of the hottest tracks on the list is Lane 8’s “Be Mine,” a sun-kissed, sensual vibe with ambient vocals and lush synth pads. Delving into mid 90s jungle, Jody reworks classic “This Way” by Skanna, keeping the haunting vibes and sophisticated melodies of the original.

Jody’s reconstruction of Above & Beyond’s “Alchemy” might be one of the best on the whole compilation. He adds a deep bass groove around the vocals to create a musically enhanced deep house anthem. Another favorite is Jody’s reshape of Kahwe’s “Driving Me Wild.” He adds layers of melodic feel to create another dimension within the track. Jody’s musical talent throughout his mixing will have you fully submerged into disc two from start to finish.

James Grant and Jody Wisternoff were fine choices to craft the fifth installment of the Anjunadeep story. They understood that Anjunadeep 05 represents the diversity of the label, offering an exploration of the deeper waters of house music.

Miley Talks Molly and Trayvon Martin in Daily Mail

$

After much speculation about what appeared to be blatant drug references in her latest single“We Can’t Stop,” Miley Cyrus has finally admitted that she was in fact talking about the drug in her second-highest charting song. The song, which was released in early June, includes the lyrics “So la da da di we like to party/Dancing with Molly.”

Initially, producers of the song claimed that the correct lyrics were the innocent “Dancing with Miley,” but in a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Miss Cyrus stated that the interpretation of the lyrics depends on your age and experience. “It depends on who’s doing what. If you’re aged ten it’s ‘Miley.’ If you know what I’m talking about then you know. I just wanted it to be played on the radio and they’re already had to edit it so much . . . You can Google me and you know what I’m up to – you know what the lyric is saying.”

The controversial music video accompanying the notorious song was met with mixed reviews and was extensively edited around the world. The UK version in particular was cut down. “They’ve edited the video here in the UK. They put a big X over my mouth ‘cos I was going like ‘this’ (gesture for oral sex) . . . No gyrating, no ***********, there was a lot less. They took out literally everything. I thought the video wasn’t bad, then MTV in the UK sent, like, 18 notes asking for changes.”

In a hilarious example of just how disconnected from reality she is, Miley continued her argument by nonsensically comparing the backlash against the subject matter in her video to the travesty of the recent Travyon Martin case. “I just think the world is so lame because you can shoot people in a movie and you can let people like Zimmerman off on trial but you can’t have someone going like ‘this’ (gesture for oral sex.) That is so dumb to me.” Although we are shocked and slightly impressed that she is keeping up with current events, this comparison between these two completely different ideas is ridiculous to say the least.

Miley has promised fans that she will release a "crazier" uncensored director's cut of the video once it receives 100 million views on YouTube. At 92 million views already, the wait shouldn't be too much longer.

Verboten StageONE Returns with Luciano, Carl Craig, Moodymann & Agoria

With sunny skies and hot temperatures, Verboten celebrated the Fourth of July by kicking off their StageONE summer event series in Brooklyn. The event took place on the Williamsburg waterfront with stunning views of the New York skyline for an affair that transitioned from daytime into nighttime. Guests, accompanied by American themed performers and dancers, danced the hours away to the dreamy soundtrack that was provided by Sasha, Guy Gerber, with harder tones coming from Maya Jane Coles, David Squillace, and Bill Patrick. Great sound and visual installations were not the only entertainment available, food venders and games in the name of Fourth of July were to be found there as well.

Check out this video recap of the party:

The fun continues as StageONE returns this Saturday, July 27th at the same amazing waterfront location featuring Luciano, Carl Craig, Moodymann, and Agoria. It's a lineup that packs quite a punch, as European stars and Detroit home heroes connect to bring on a night of exquisite musical programming. Moodymann, the man who musically follows no rules, does not grace New York City with his presence often. His set at Movement Detroit this year could only be described as 'epic' and 'experimental,' featuring some really low vibrations. When Moodymann gets on the decks with his beloved set of vinyl, there is a feeling that comes upon you, that you are present amidst musical greatness.

Carl Craig played right after Moodymann in Detroit, and similarly so this Saturday. From the jazzy and the soulful to the hard hitting techno beats, Carl Craig has mastered it at all. Music is just something that just runs in Detroiter's veins. Is that an earthquake? No, it's Carl Craig's bass.

Heading in from across the Atlantic ocean is France's export Agoria and Cadenza label boss Luciano. Both DJs have a knack of pulling elements from different types of music and tying it in to a 4/4 beat. Luciano has been known to take samples or clips of pop songs, while Agoria loves to bring in beautiful indie electronic tracks to weave in amidst the house and techno.

Musical exploration is on the menu for this Satuday, we look forward to hearing what these four masters bring to the table for Verboten's second installment of StageONE.

Pulse Radio Pit Stop: Dennis Ferrer Avalon Bound

Head honcho of the imprint Objektivity, New Yorker Dennis Ferrer has been a champion of house music since its earlier years. After one of the best sets of the second day of Movement Festival, Dennis heads out west to LA this Saturday, July 27th to turn Avalon in an underground hub for the best house music. Joining him in this mission will be Desolat's Hector. Before Dennis sets foot out the door however, we caught up with him for our 'Pit Stop' to get a feel whether its West Coast, best coast or East Coast, beast coast for him.

The house music scene in New York has been overall, pretty vibrant over the years. Even more so, recently. Throughout your career, what has been your impression of the West Coast house music scene? How was it changed? I don't really have much experience with the West Coast house scene as of recent except for the Dirty Bird Crew. So I'm not too sure if I'm qualified to speak on it. My European scheduling has not really allowed for many West Coast tours of late.

What are your thoughts on the New York music scene today? Do you find yourself playing more in the States or in Europe still? I still play way more in Europe as the scene there has been vibrant for quite some time. It's been a dance culture there for as long as I can remember. Unlike the scene here in the States, that as of late has turned their commercial ears on to EDM. There's always been a strong underground presence here though...so whenever I can I like to play here in the States.

We talked briefly after your set in the artist lounge at Movement this year about how the new generation of electronic music listeners have yet to learn what truly is house music. Do you feel it is your responsibility to help these kids learn? The only thing I'm responsible for is giving everyone, in my eyes, is a proper representation of what kind of genre I came from. In addition to that, I also definitely feel that it is my responsibility to provide the highest quality of production that I can muster. People give up their hard earned money to buy my tunes. It is the least that I can do.

If someone started listening to house music today, for the first time, what track you would recommend for them to hear? Hmm, I would probably say Marshall Jefferson's "House Music Anthem." It is the definition of house for me.

You currently live in New Jersey (Jersey represent!), have you gone out or played there? Do you think its own electronic music scene will ever blossom being engulfed by nearby New York City? I'm actually a New Yorker who moved to Jersey. LOL! No disrespect to Jersey though..but I don't really play much here. I always prefer to play in NYC.

You're playing in one of LA's largest clubs, Avalon, on Saturday, July 27th. Do you play in LA often? If not, what are you looking forward to? I don't play in L.A. very often but when I do...It reminds me of when I used to come and visit family that I had that lived here in Hawthorne. I've always loved L.A. No place like it and it takes a special breed to survive there. I always look forward to going there.

Fairmont picnik electronik interview

Finding Fairmont Ahead of Piknic Electronik

$

I first found Fairmont (Jake Fairley) on Sasha's Metrophonic Guest Mix from November 2008. His track "I Need Medicine" was carefully nested in between Timo Maas' Subtellite and Paul Kalkbrenner's Gebrunn Gebrunn, which brought the mix to a close. We all have certain tracks that call out to us, and Fairmont's track did just that with its dark notes marked by eerie vocals that let me just slip away to a surreal reality. Ever since, Fairmont's work has been on my radar. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, the man has racked up quite some miles in traveling in the last ten years. His truly raw and uncommon sound often accompanied by vocals, allows for the emotional club experience. It is no wonder that he has been picked up by My Favorite Robot and will be playing alongside them this Sunday, July 28th at Montreal's Piknic Electronik. I caught up with him for a chance to find out about the man behind the music, as he tells us about his travels, his studio gear, and who are the "big hearted club misfits."

You grew up with the Toronto indie rock scene, but how was the electronic music scene there before you got connected with Jeremy Caulfield of Dumb-Unit? There was definitely a pretty cool scene in Toronto, but I had zero connection to it until I met Jer. I was really in a bubble while I was first getting in to electronic music. Jer introduced me to a lot people and got me my first good gigs and put out my first 12 inch. He saw me playing live in a pub to about five people and signed me on the spot. I was very shy and nervous back then and was really lucky to have somebody pushing me. For him, I think it was cool to discover an artist that was completely unknown and unassisted with anything else. I think he was also excited by the fact that I approached things differently than people who came up in the scene.

It says in your profile that you have developed a following of "big hearted club misfits." Underground clubs tend to be inviting for all types of people. Could you describe to us what characterizes a club misfit and who are they? Ha! I didn't write that, I think that was Gemma from Border Community that came up with that. I don't think that's in my current bio, but I like it and I should probably start using it again. To me this is referring to some kind of “outsider dance music scene.” Producers, DJs, clubs and their fans who all love club music and clubbing, but not the status-quo stuff that one normally associates with the words “underground dance music.” This is the world I try to live and and the kind of people I choose to be around. Something that is slightly scary to me at the moment is a trend in the industry towards strictly larger events from the 500 person dance club. I prefer small and medium-sized clubs and the kind of community and musical freedom that is possible in them.

My favorite track of yours, "I Need Medicine," I find myself listening to in melancholic moments. The emotion is raw and I often find myself wondering, is there an event in your life that influences such creations?“I Need Medicine” is about drinking cough syrup. There's a ingredient in certain cough syrups that is psychedelic if you drink enough of it. Me and my high school buddies used to drink that stuff all the time. It was cheap, easy to get, and a lot of fun.

Tell us a little about your technical set up in the studio. What are you currently experimenting with? I compose on a computer like most people, but I make all my sounds with hardware. Up until now I have chosen portable stuff, because I move around a lot. This means mostly new gear like the Dave Smith stuff and Moog Minitaur. However, now that I am settling in Barcelona, I plan to start getting some fun and bulky vintage gear. My favourite bit of kit is my Swejman S1 modular and my new TT303.

Do you sometimes wish that you could go back to not being in public's eye, just making music without any expectation of playing it live? I'm right where I want to be. I travel the world and make a good living while I'm at it. I'm recognized for my work, but I would't say that I'm really in the public's eye. I'm not exactly famous, and i wouldn't want to be.

You have chosen a nomadic mindset, living no longer than a season in any given city. How many cities have you lived in so far? Where are you living now, and what city do you have your sights on next? I've lived in over 10 cities in the last few years. Right now I am in Barcelona and I am going to stay for a while, no more bouncing around. I've never been as happy with a place as I am now. I will still visit Toronto when I can, but there's nowhere in Europe where I would rather be. So for once, I am going to put my roots down a bit.

Tell us, how is your label Beachcoma going? Are there any artists you'd like to highlight that we should keep an eye out for? Beachcoma is going really well. Metope, Sid Le Rock and I decided from the beginning that our only goal was to have fun, not to be too serious about it. That being said we are lucky enough to have some amazing artists that want to bless us with their magic. The young and talented Max Farlane has really become like family to us and keeps giving us very inspired tracks. We've also just signed some truly stunning songs from a Dutch producer named Sigward. So although we approach the whole thing in a very chilled way, it's still turned into something that I am very proud of.

You're playing Piknic Electronik with My Favorite Robot and Jordan Dare on the 28th, have you played Piknic before? If yes, what are your favorite memories from the Park? What are you looking forward to, playing this time? I've played Piknic Montreal twice before and I had the honour of playing the very first Piknic in Barcelona last year. All of the those gigs were great, it's really a special event. What I'm looking forward to most is playing beside My Favorite Robot. Those guys have become like brothers to me and it's been such a positive experience moving over to the label. It's a family of very funny and genuine people at MFRR and it's been a breath of fresh air for me.

Inside The Beat is a new film series on Pulse that delves into the minds of electronic music's contemporary visionaries. First off the rank is This And That Lab founder Davide Squillace.

In 2007 the Napoli-born Davide Squillace received the phone call of his career. On the other end of the line was the Circoloco team, informing Squillace they'd been keeping tabs on him via his releases and DJ sets, then inviting him to become one of the club's residents. Since then Squillace has become something of a superstar to European clubbers, his name synonymous with a unique brand of funk and tech-driven house that ignites souls and feet. At the centre of Squillace's world these days - aside from the busy production schedule and endless DJ gigs - is his own This And That Lab; a creative outlet which marries art, design and music.

So come with us as we get a little deeper with Davide, going beyond the music and digging down into the man; his inspiration and passion, beliefs and fears.

The Records That Defined Danny Daze

Miami born, Berlin based Danny Daze (real name Daniel Gomez) has been on top of his game recently, slotted for a slew of gigs here in Ibiza over the summer. Daze has seen a string of successful releases and a spot on Maceo Plex and Alta’s Ellum Audio roster, where he’s championed raw, techno funk tracks like “Shake It Mama” as one half of Jupiter Jazz (alongside label boss Maceo Plex), and moody, edgy, dubbed out hits like “The Calm,” leading to high praise among many of the industry’s elite, gigs around the world, and most recently, an Essential Mix.

In order to find out more of what makes Danny tick, and get a closer understanding of his wide range of musical influences, we asked about the five records he feels define him most & those special pieces of music he still can't live without.

Joe Arroyo - Rebellion

"Embedded into my brain. At least once a week I hum this trumpet melody. Joe Arroyo, El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico, Celia Cruz, Hansel y Raul playing consistently at my house. Salsa & Merengue are the first types of music I really ever heard. Still remember running around my house at five years old playing the cowbell."
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F

"This is the one that started it all for me on the electronic tip. First time ever realizing I was listening to "electronic music" was in the opening credits of Beverly Hills Cop. From here I discovered people would break dance to this music and opened up a whole new world to me. The movies “Breakin'” and "Electric Boogaloo" became my next hook."

I-F - I Do Because I Couldn't Care less

"First time I heard this track I asked myself "why does it sound like it was mixed down by a 4 year old?" Then I noticed that’s exactly how its supposed to be. The notion that music needed to be clean and perfect flew out the window. I really started to appreciate nuances in music and this has really helped me out with both production and DJ sets."

Tones On Tail – Go!

"I was never really into bands for some reason…whatsoever. If it didn't have an electronic drum, I just wasn't into it. I never noticed that about myself until one of my friends at summer camp called me an idiot and showed me this track on his Walkman. I immediately wanted to listen to it again. I credit this song for opening up my mind when it comes to music in general. To this day I play this track as the last track of the night in my DJ sets at times."
Biggie Smalls feat. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Notorious Thugs

"First thing that comes to mind with this song is the fact I'd go to my best friends house every single day in order to listen to it. I couldn't find the CD because it sold out in a matter of seconds, and the only one they had was the clean version. I wasn't down with that! I think this might have been my first massive obsession with a song, trying to learn every single lyric on it. Still consider this one of the best hip-hop tracks of all time. Crazy part is, I'm more of a 2Pac kinda dude."

Danny Daze plays dirtybird at Sankeys Ibiza this Thursday 25 July, followed by Carnival Cities at Sankeys Ibiza co-presented by AIR (Amsterdam) on 3 August.

Danish electronic producer Trentemoller has announced the details of third LP 'Lost', due for release on the 23rd September through In My Room.

Anders Trentemøller's latest album shall be the follow up to the critically acclaimed “Into The Great Wide Yonder”, a progression of his previous work and another slab of undefinable, outer-worldy sonic tapestries.

“People wanted something similar to the last album, but if you’re getting to the point of listening to people and what they think of your sound...Well, that’s not for me” he said in statement. 'Lost' sees the producer step further from the dance-floor, keeping the club roots in tact but experimenting more with live instrumentation, songwriting and guitar melodies than soundscapes..

The album is due for release in September. No preview available as yet.

Pulse Loves... Sam Russo

Sam Russo has been a long serving DJ within the East End of London's buzzing dance music culture - in fact, he started long before the hype machine had geared up a cog, beginning his DJing career at the age of 18 around the Shoreditch circuit. the ex-sound engineer has since become a regular fixture on Matt Tolfrey's Leftroom Records imprint, working on his debut album and also collaborating with Huxley and Craig Richards in the process. Not bad for a talented young Londoner who's been releasing music since 2010. Nowadays he's playing globally, delivering world class EPs for the likes of 1Trax, The Nothing Special & Classic and of course, stepping up to the plate for Pulse Loves, mixing a bespoke electro set that explores sounds not usually within his deep and techno led remit. Read on and enjoy the mix as Pulse gets acquainted with Sam further.

Pulse Loves... behind the scenes. Tell us about your time as a sound engineer? I never set out to become an engineer, it just sort of happened. I remember Matt Tolfrey asking me who helped me with the studio or was it me at the controls. From that we decided to hang out and see if anything good came of our time in the studio. It started with a remix of Silicone Soul and finished with an artist album Matt put out on Leftroom. It's really strange to see you name in the credits of such big project. I think the album project gave me the confidence to work for and with others, and like most things, word spreads and the phone starts ringing!!

Pulse Loves.. artists in their own rights. What made you decide to step out and start putting your own music out there? Like I mentioned previously I didn't even consider engineering until I was asked. I always wanted to release music. Having been involved in the club industry for some time, it gives you the hunger to strive for more, you see trends come and go, as you do artists and DJ's. I think the combination of your peers and newcomers releasing amazing records makes you want in. For me putting music out there is nerve racking! The promo building up to the release date then boom, its out to the masses to judge. I guess thats the beauty of it.

Pulse loves.. Leftroom records. Tell us about your relationship with them; is it a family vibe? I would consider Leftroom as my 'home'. Matt is very open to new and interesting music and I feel that suits me down to the ground. I find it very hard to place my music on labels, as do most producers I imagine. With Leftroom I really can do what I want, to a certain extent haha. Losing things is a good example of a record I sat on for a year or two, I really had no idea where to place it, Matt heard it and took the risk. It sold out too!! The label has regulars that are all friends, we sometimes share line ups for other parties and of course represent for the Leftroom parties that take place across the globe. It's totally a family vibe.

Pulse loves... Your mix for us. Could you tell us a little about the flavour you've gone for? When given the opportunity to record a podcast I always like to give something to the listeners they might not expect. I thinks its good to show that you don't just listen to house and techno. The tracks on the mix are very old electro & breaks records. I have always loved the early Carl Finlow, Drexciya, Underground Resistance etc etc and I think its important to recognise this as timeless music.

Pulse loves... vinyl. Are you still a champion of black wax and do you see it making a comeback? Of course, I will always buy records. Its a hobby and a passion. We are already seeing a rise in sales, so fingers crossed. For me it never went away, we just lost a few good imprints.

Pulse loves... the future. What's going to be keeping you busy for the rest of the year? Studio work. I have a few projects I'm finalising at the moment, I have a release coming out on The Nothing Special around September time and then a steady flow of music seeing me into the new year.

Manchester's legendary club series The Warehouse Project have announced their 2013 line ups, featuring Richie Hawtin, Four Tet, Seth Troxler and more from Friday 27th September.

After moving from their beloved Store Street venue to the gargantuan Victoria Warehouse, WHP crowned their new venue in style last year bringing some of the biggest DJs and acts from across all of dance music's genres to the world-famous season. For 2013, they've pulled out the stops yet again for another twelve-week series of unique events in Manchester. Jamie Jones brings Paradise to the Northern city, featuring guests Maya Jane Coles, Art Department and more, while Swedish dark wave pop act The Knife also play. The likes of Chibuku, Hospitality, Circo Loco and many more all take up special residency across the season too.

This year, they also invite the like of Julio Bashmore, Disclosure and Rudimental to curate their own evenings, plus appearances from Major Lazer, Chromeo, Diplo, Loco Dice, Carl Craig, Joy Orbison and many more big names all season long. The closing parties take place across New Years Eve and New Years Day.
