Melbourne artist Griffin James, aka Francis Inferno Orchestra is back with a new mini-album. Fresh from national and international touring, FIO is ready to liven up your stereo with fresh new techno and house jams. An unusual and under-used format, the mini-album will feature 7 original Francis Inferno Orchestra tracks.

Emerging in 2010, the electronic producer quickly announced himself as a cut above in Melbourne underground dance scene. Crafting his sound from classic disco samples and a collection of drum machine beats, FIO gained a following from tracks like ‘Amber Express’ and ‘You’re the One’.

Growing up on soul and disco left an indelible mark on James, who continues to blend classic sounds with cutting edge beats. Now based in London, FIO is looking to expand into a burgeoning European market. Due May 19th, the record will be released through expat crew Voyeurythm.

Todd Terje - It's Album Time

Todd Terje
It's Album Time
Olsen Records

When Todd Terje announces new material, adherents vary as to whether awaiting big room viking disco, synth heavy cosmodysseys or dubby edits of otherwise un-remixable hits. Thankfully for all those anticipating, Terje Olsen, known now to punters worldwide as Todd, has decided ‘It’s Album Time’. A nebulous adventure through new and previously released material, prepare for an ensemble of thick melodies, nimble keyboard explorations and Terje’s unmistakably glossy mosaic of sound.

Statement piece that it is, ‘It’s Album Time’ begins with an intro then an introductory interlude, ‘Leisure Suit Preben,’ though whom Preben is, and at whom Terje aims his double-entendre, it’s difficult to say. It is, however, a gossamer cushion into the debut long-player of an artist known primarily for producing ball-tearers. It swings its relaxed pimp-stick into a hot spring of strings, sighs and schaffel, before ‘Preben Goes to Acapulco’ pirouettes into a sauna of funk – a room Terje visits continually as the album heats up. Next up, ‘Svensk Saas’ sounds like Richard D James choosing ingredients for salsa, injecting lithe kazoos across a scatty vocal spread.

It’s not until ‘Strandbar’ surfaces, with its big splashy kit and analogue rump that a dance floor emerges from the Nordic fog. Block and shaker tangoing through the entirety, it dodges the hype podium that ‘Inspector Norse’ climbed last year by way of a dog leg key change, sounding like what Thor may dance to on his day off. The cliff dive resolution to this, the album mix shows a keen eye for the album audience, and its touches down into the engine-room arpeggio of 'Delorean Dynamite' keeps the steam billowing away. For disco that wears its Italo-heart on its sleeve like cufflinks nicked from a Milano runway, this is versatile stuff. It’s not so much suited for the dance floor, nor even the interstate highway; this one has wings, just like the car it’s named after.

Hearing Terje produce ennobled pop star Bryan Ferry is something else. Of all the tracks presented, ‘Johnny and Mary’ is the only that does not sound principally Todd. This should delight those desperate to see the Olsen boards host some more serious microphone personality. It’s wistful and delicate, but amongst all the energy of ‘It’s Album Time’, is perhaps a stall into nostalgia that may prove over-saturating on an album already nodding repeatedly at the 80s. Bring on more collaborations, Terje, clearly!

‘Alfonso Muskedunder’ rouses things, like Siriusmo necromancing Burt Bacharach from wherever he now reclines (yes that’s a flute, and played, pitched drum skins). ‘Muskedunder’ is Scandinavian for a thunderous, bell-ended shotgun, the Blunderbuss. Terje is adequately blunt and scatterbrained here, but like any Nordic punster, he sprays nice and tight.

Hearing teams of familiar tracks nestled together can ring uncomfortably for fans keen for fresh material. ‘Swing Star’ - which landed with a second fiddle twinkle on the flip side of the aforementioned monster ‘Inspector Norse’ - is framed all the more aptly here, following the octopus circus of ‘Alfonso Muskedunder’. When it materialised, ‘Swing Star Pt. I’ progressed the Norweigan’s sound towards a kraut-trance position so space-aged it forgot that people ever danced outside of their tangerine dreams. Having personally experienced the reaction of a club full of confused Parisians yupping at Mr. Olsen playing ‘Spiral’ (a notable but thankful omission here), it’s great to hear both parts of ‘Swing Stars’ make so much sense on this roundup, shoulder to shoulder with thick Italo disco and oddball inclusions alike.

Like a nuclear habanero exploding upwards from the desert, closing track ‘Oh Joy’ is the nebulous rolling synth work that Todd Terje always rejoiced in. It’s a great coming home track, and a perfect garage clicker for ‘Inspector Norse’ to park itself after. It is that much more refreshing to hear a tune that has soundtracked so many moments of jubilance after such a well curated selection of delights; one forgets how long 'Inspector Norse' has been doing the rounds. One also forgets the passage of 'It’s Album Time,' as it progresses. Many artists would dread this. But as James Holden said quite a few years ago, “disco is very much the same as trance.” Floating along with Todd Terje’s first trip, at times it’s easy to forget how many bold releases he has guided into the collective ear with both cheer and compliance. What a joy that he’s chosen now to issue one so rounded, nuanced and unmistakably Terje.

"Villalobos" VS Deadmau5: The Twitter Beef Troll Of 2014?

We all know that Deadmau5 is no stranger to a twitter beef, the outspoken producer having gone head-to-head over the past few years with everyone from DJ Sneak and Jackmaster to Justin Bieber and Madonna.

Whether it was unintentional or not, one of the most celebrated and innovative figures in electronic music, Ricardo Villalobos, has become the Mau5' latest twitter target. Or has he? Villalobos is well known for his aversion to social media, so we're not certain that his twitter account is actually authentic. Regardless, Deadmau5 still took the bait when the @DJ__Villalobos account responded to his tweet about Ultra Miami set troubles. Check it out below.

City Officials of Miami want Ultra Fest Out!

Over the weekend, Miami played host to one of the biggest electronic music events in the States – Ultra Music Festival. Revellers will now be looking forward to the next one.

Miami city officials however are not impressed and might not let that happen. Officials are calling for the end of Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami after Contemporary Services Corporation guard Erica Mack was trampled Friday night while trying to stop a group of people who didn’t have tickets who stormed a fence to get inside. Mack, 28, was listed as “critical” but stable at Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe brain haemorrhaging and a broken leg.

It was this episode that’s finally pulled the ‘last-straw’ for Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado along with City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff as they want Ultra Fest out. “The mayor and I will be proposing a resolution in front of the commission that would deny them the ability to have Ultra in the future,” said Sarnoff. “I think they have overstayed their welcome.”

deadmau5 Trolls Martin Garrix & Avicii at Ultra

In typical deadmau5 fashion, the Canadian DJ/producer included some of his trademark humor in his closing set on Saturday at Ultra Music Festival 2014. Taking over for Avicii who was rushed to the hospital earlier this week for emergency gallbladder surgery, deadmau5 did not hide his disapproval for Dutch artist Martin Garrix, whose hit track “Animals” was played during his debut main stage performance at the annual Miami festival.

deadmau5 took to Twitter earlier in the day to share his feelings about 17-year-old Garrix (as well as Avicii and his chart-topping track “Levels”), and hinted at some mischief to be expected during his set later that night.

It all came together when he mashed up “Animals” with childhood classic tune “Old MacDonald Had A Farm.” He followed this up with another mash-up of his “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” with Avicii’s “Levels.”

Tiesto’s called out deadmau5’s stunt on Twitter questioning whether the “tribute” track was a slight to his friend recovering in the hospital. The two argued back and forth about the performance.

New Wristband Provides DJs with Crowd Analytics

A new startup called Lightwave is developing wearable technology that will provide analytics about the audience at live music events. Started by Rana June who is best known for being one of the first big iPad DJs and the co-founder and VP of marketing at Medialets, the project is a wearable wristband that measures user activity including movement, audio levels, and temperature. The data is provided to live performers so they can more accurately assess the audience.

<br>

“When you’re a performer, you have no idea if the guy in the back of the room is having fun or not,” states Rana June. Attendees can unlock certain events based on different activity levels creating unique experiences for each show.

The plan is for artists or brand sponsors to distribute Lightwave bracelets ahead of an event and then collect them back at the end. Rana June explains, “When you enter a concert, instead of putting a paper wristband on someone, you put an intelligent wristband on them.”

The new technology debuted during SXSW 2014 at Pepsi’s “bioreactive” concert featuring A-Trak.

The Spice Cellar Announces April Lineup

$

Sydney’s favourite underground dance hub The Spice Cellar has just announced its April lineup. The team at Spice have booked an outstanding roster of DJs and producers,  including Greg Pepperpot, Myles Mac and Gary Todd.

Greg Pepperpot has been a major player in the French scene since 1992. His CV reads like a what’s what of electronic music, with residencies at Rex Club, I-Boat and The Wood to name a few. With a rep to rival anyone, Pepperpot will bring some old-school credibility to The Spice Cellar stage.

Myles Mac has been at the forefront of Melbourne’s electronic resurgence ever since he co-founded The Melbourne Deepcast in 2009 with good mate Andy Hart. Mac’s sets at Revolver, and New Guernica cemented him as a stalwart of the Melbourne scene, and a pioneer of new disco. After a European tour alongside San Soda, Iron Curtis and Session Victim, the Victorian returns to his native land with some fresh new deep house and techno cuts.

Garry Todd is a man who needs no introduction. While this affable Northern chappy might look like a fish out of water, beneath that quirky exterior is a supremely talented musician and DJ. The UK veteran has built a reputation on original mixes and spellbinding sets, which feature everything from Run DMC to Ricardo Vilalobos. A character in front of, and behind the decks, don’t miss out on the one and only Garry Todd.

The Spice Cellar April Lineup:
04.04.2014 Soft&Slow – Dreems (Multi Culti)
05.04.2014 Spice - Morgan
11.04.2014 Soft&Slow – Matt Trousdale

Golden Plains 2014 In Review

$
0
0

I had planned to make the pilgrimage to Golden Plains festival in 2008 but was always hindered by the ticketing system (a ballot process which favours those who’ve attended previous years), the high ticket cost (in the hundreds) and the Labour Day weekend date, which invariably clashes with something each year.

The line-ups have always been nothing short of brilliant and last year’s Golden Plains line up was a pleasure for the electronic music community and I knew that in 2014 that I had to see this festival for myself. Within a day, ticket allocations for 2014 sold out and for months my Facebook page was littered with those in search of tickets. Little did I know that an illustrious Golden Ticket was soon to come my way…

 photo MiaMalaMcDonald2_zpse171d0ee.jpg

When I arrived at the site, I smiled immediately. So many festivals these days harp on about how they’re some sort of art and freedom-driven communal celebration of life, when in reality they’re just a drug-fuelled paddock bash that got out of hand. Golden Plains is the opposite of this. The festival is genuinely about letting good people have a good time and steering clear of commercialism. While tickets definitely seem expensive for two days of fun, the line-up is a full justification with a healthy selection of world-class acts. In addition, punters are given access to full BYO, well-priced grass roots food stands and permanent on site facilities including showers and composting toilets. I was impressed (and barely spent $150 the whole time I was there).

Saturday lunch we constructed the tent and munched on celery and squashed avocado. Jumpers and layers were shucked of as the uber-balmy weekend began. We made our way to the stage with cold tinnies. Gold Panda was the first act on my hit list. He set the mood with a live Maschine set, combining smooth basslines and dreamy marimbas woven through a warm house set. Getting sine-waves just right might challenge many UK bass producers, yet to Gold Panda, it’s clearly too easy.

 photo TyJohnson_zps96057fdb.jpg

After dancing and playing in the heat for a few too many hours, I decided to nap. This proved a terrible idea. Every 10 minutes I was woken to some form of screaming, shouting, running, laughing, nang expulsion, or my friends’ wondering where I’d gone. Clearly it was awake time and not sleepy nap time. After an outfit change and beer from the esky, it was stage time once more.

Charles Bradley’s set was arguably the best at the festival (see Cut Copy). He ignited the crowd with soulful lyrics and wild dance moves and moved us with his speech about love and peace. ‘Why Is It So Hard’ was supernatural to watch. West coast beatsmith Flying Lotus followed and has definitely levelled up his live show since his last Australian tour and brought a cutting edge visual suite; projections layered over a micro LED super screen. He was followed by a DJ set from JPS, head honcho of Melbourne’s The Operatives crew. FlyLo fans settled easily into the beats and 808 jams.

 photo MiaMalaMcDonald_zps5461c83c.jpg

An aim of my night was to make it to see Spacey Space’s closing set (I think the last time I saw him was 2009 during a fateful Halloween spent between Korova Milk Bar and Revolver). However unfortunately I was out cold in my sleeping bag before he started. Serendipitously I was woken in the wee hours by some deliciously low-slung house. I checked my watch and it was 5 minutes till close, alas, I was not going to make it to the stage in time. “Rest for tomorrow,” I told myself... “You’ll see Cut Copy tomorrow”, I told myself…

 photo TyJohnson3_zps37b0e814.jpg

Sunday reared its head and I couldn’t believe that the fun times were almost over. I think I’m far to acclimatised to four day festivals and non-stop music. I pulledon my long pink silk sun dress and headed to the stage. Perhaps I’ve also been spoiled by other festivals with multiple stages and big brand-name sound systems, but the one thing I thought could have been done better was the sound. If you’re going to have a big crowd interacting with only one stage and so many trees around the place, a relay PA system could work well. While the acoustics of the festival was the only noticeable flaw, I’m positive they will improve (and it’s an easy area to sharpen, anyhow).

Finally Sunday night arrived. Fat Freddy’s Drop set the right tone of soulful groove, while Public Enemy got the crowd excited for a raucous night. However I’d seen both acts before, so instead decided to light my mouth on fire with every bit of chilli sauce I could find at the food stands (definitely head to the Gumbo Kithcen & Taco Truck if you get the chance). With delicious fire mouth – I was ready to dance.

 photo GPHighlights_zps25198890.jpg

Cut Copy were my absolute favourites of the festival. The band has re-branded themselves well with their latest album ‘Free Your Mind’. They’ve ditched the pastel shirts and altered their performance formula. Seeing this band evolve over time has been a complete pleasure. Their stage craft was spot on and you could feel the electricity everywhere. Strobed lights highlighted the frenzy with Dan Whitford singing while standing on the kick drum and Ben Browning running out to the crowd to during his guitar solo. I don’t think anyone has seen them quite like this before. While the crowd went crazy for 2007/08 hits ‘Hearts on Fire’, ‘Lights and Music’ and ‘Out there on the Ice’, there was also a big response to newer material ‘Need you Now’ and ‘Free Your Mind’. A few of us were a bit sad that they didn’t play ‘Saturdays’, but I suppose it’s time for us to move on.

 photo TyJohnson2_zpsebcd7ada.jpg

Later I wiled out to CDR Australia founder and Warp Records artist Mark Pritchard, who created serious movement on the dancefloor with his Serato matched jungle riddims. Then the final instalment of the night was Melbourne’s stalwart of desert house and C-Grade/Animals Dancing Don, Tornado Wallace. The all vinyl set was an interesting one, touching on Turkish disco, Australian rave (Gapirri Mix of ‘Djapana’ by Yothu Yindi) and the well-awaited and as yet unreleased ‘Kookaburra Track’ (a forthcoming record by Coober Pedy University Band coming out on Animals Dancing's first release!) The closing melody of Doobie Brothers’ ‘Long Train Running,’ made for smiles and sing alongs; such a happy end to a long weekend of delight.
