US Album Sales Reach All Time Low

$

0

During the week ending with January 12th, album sales in the United States have fallen to their lowest ever with only 4.25 million units (CD and vinyl) sold across the country. These are the lowest numbers since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan first began logging music sales. The previous lowest figure was 4.49 million during October 2013.

Album sales have been hindered by the steadily increasing popularity of digital sales, downloads, and streaming since 2010. American album sales decreased by 12% in 2010, another 4% in 2012, and 8% in 2013. Before 2010, it was extremely rare for album sales to drip below 5 million per week. Last year alone, sales fell below the 5 million mark 18 times.

Deep Dish Set To Return in 2014

Though both Sharam and Dubfire have been hinting at possibly reuniting for some time now, it looks as though the time is finally upon us.

Yes, you read that right. Grammy winning Deep Dish, made up of Sharam Tayebi, also known as Sharam, and Ali Shirazinia, known as Dubfire, are finally reuniting. They've set up a website, www.deepdish.com, with nothing more than a play and pause button, and a clock counting down to the now imminent moment. According to our calculations, the clock seems to point towards 71 days from now (at the time of this writing), or March 28th of this year - just in time for Miami.

Deep Dish were responsible for 1998's "Junk Science" and 2005's "George Is On," several mix CDs, including Global Underground Moscow and Toronto, a Renaissance Ibiza mix, and countless singles and remixes, including a remix of Dido's "Thank You," which netted them a Grammy in 2002. The duo was one of house's favourites for years, until when in 2006, Sharam and Dubfire parted ways, looking to branch out with solo careers, which saw Dubfire develop into one of techno and minimal's top stars. Stay tuned to this spot for more details as they come in.

Robbie Lowe Drops 20 Years Of DJing Anniversary Mix

Australian DJ icon Robbie Lowe is gearing up to celebrate an impressive two decades on the ones and twos next Saturday night at Sydney's Spice Cellar, where he has held a residency for the past five years. 20 years in any profession is no mean feat, let alone the fickle world of DJing, and as Robbie told Pulse today, he aims to mark the occasion not by delving through the past per se, but by throwing a great party for all his fans and supporters over the years, with a strong focus on the next chapter of his career. That said, you can be sure to expect a classic or three in his set.

In anticipation of next week's party, Robbie has recorded an exclusive mix for Pulse. Here's what he has to say about it:

"It’s an easy going mix that grooves along with some nice basslines and melodies. I guess just like with all my mixes I try keep an open mind with the music and direction. Usually I'll get a feeling and vibe then go from there. And this is the case with this one. I'm happy with how this mix turned out, I like the feeling and the tracks are really nice on the ears. Hope you like too."

Stay tuned to Pulse next week for our upcoming interview with Mr Lowe. Until then, enjoy the muzak!

Falls Festival Byron Bay In Review

At the dawning of 2014 Byron Bay’s magic-filled hinterland was graced with the presence of an eclectic mix of international and locally recognised musicians that this planet has to offer. It was the coming together of an abundance of genres in what was Northern NSW’s first taste of the well established and long running Falls Festival, which after a successful run in Victoria has now spread its wings up the east coast, selling out weeks in advance from lift-off.

 photo falls1_zps72d831e6.jpg

On arrival, I was pleased that access from the car park to the festival site - unlike Splendour, which involved an epic trek to the festival grounds – was as stress free and easy as it is for me to stand on my head, a skill I’ve held since kindergarten. The site was also much smaller than Splendour, and I was lucky enough to score myself a spot at Flash Camp; a ritzy option with friendly service, hot showers, clean composting bathrooms, Bloody Mary service and a mini theatre, which made the whole experience a 4.5 star camping adventure in the forest and saved me from what I heard were one hour queues for the regular shower facilities. If you plan on reveling at your next festival and Flash Camp is there, I highly recommend spending the extra dollars.

For its debut year in Byron, Falls had a line-up to please ear drums of all different shapes and sizes. The best of Australian hip-hop was represented by Hermitude, who on the final night had the crowd heaving, their arms up and waving in delight. There was the up-and-coming and totally infectious local Byron Bay band Tora, whose sound is akin to with that of Whitest Boy Alive (Erlend Oye, if you’re reading this, take these guys on your next world tour!). Bonobo’s gorgeous rhythms and textures was the perfect soundtrack for the late afternoon, grass-filled amphitheatre, which became a roly poly hill of giggles and delight, and you couldn’t help but look to the sky in awe when Cyril Hahn’s electric bounce with ‘Perfect Form’ made your hips shake. As Cyril performed, the sun set and the sky became textured with pink and orange hues above the Forest Stage, appropriately titled due location on the outskirts of the site. Indeed, musical appetites were undoubtedly satisfied, as seen by the state of the crowd throughout the three-day extravaganza; arms endlessly up and roars echoing through what I believe is some of the most beautiful land this planet has to offer. We were even treated to a spectacular lighting storm on the final night, mimicking the electric atmosphere resonating from the feet stomping below.

 photo falls2_zps4a529bc7.jpg

All the greatness aside, whether it’s my experience with unique German festivals such as Fusion, Nation of Gondwana, Melt, or my recent involvement in what I understand are becoming titled ‘transformational’ festivals around Byron - such as the inspiring Uplift festival - I couldn’t help but feel that something lacked from the overall experience. These festivals seemed to have a crowd with a real focus on the music and the spectators all seemed entirely engaged in the sound waves (or brain waves) that rippled in, over and throughout their limbs. There didn’t seem to be this same kind of vibe at Falls.

Perhaps much of this came down to the artists’ relatively short set times - an unfortunate but necessary aspect when trying to cram in a plethora of acts on the bill to satisfy the masses, which left most bands unable to make personable connections with the crowd. Or maybe it’s because the small and vibrant scene in Byron Bay and its surrounds is difficult to replicate in such a large festival environment. Though high-fives to Rufus, who did stop to thank and praise independent radio which has helped them to the heights at which they now stand. With a roar from the crowd it was very well received, except for the guy wearing pink undies and a cape who stumbled past me whilst bumping into other onlookers, did a few circles then stumbled back up the hill. He must have lost his marbles and forgot they were being compressed inside his bulging panties.

 photo falls3_zps28f5fcc9.jpg

Besides these words of gratitude, though, I could not find that sense of mind-opening inspiration or positive reinforcement towards community or sustainability, and had to settle for ear-tantalising rhythms and basslines instead. Is it greedy to expect more? I mean if you are there for the music and the 76 beers then great, you’d be blown away, but I couldn’t help but dream that this amazingly powerful platform - with thousands of humans seeking fulfillment in one way or another - could not be better utilised by inspiring and enlightening young minds. There are plenty of amazing and creative revolutions occurring right now and I think we’re ready to embrace times of creation, inspiration and revolution. Wouldn’t it be awesome if festivals like Falls were ready to open their minds to the power that lies in their hands? There is a plethora of people wanting to share out there and platforms like this have the space to make it happen!

Intro

After playing the closing party in 2012, you became a full-fledged resident at Jamie Jones’ Paradise at DC-10 this past year. That must have made for one hell of a summer… Yeah the summer was crazy, although I wasn’t there the full season, it was nice to just pop in and out and not get too caught up in one day being a 5 day party! I played sets alone, and a couple back to back with Burnski and then wAFF, really enjoyed all of them and it was good to get some variety and adapting to playing with different people. Paradise on a whole can only go from strength to strength and with some of the artists and DJ’s they’re lining up for 2014, I don’t doubt it will be another massive hit.

I know it’s early, but any word on a return for the 2014 season? Yeah, I have just been confirmed by Jamie whilst at BPM this year, which I’m very excited about, and it’s given me a massive kick up the rear to get my shit in order and make some special little treats!

Your newer productions like “You,” and your remix of Evans’ “00.6” seem to gravitate towards the darker, edgier end of the deep house spectrum, and “I Am” is no exception. What do you think pushed you in that direction? And is this something you think we can expect more of (especially considering the title of your newest EP)? I don’t really have a set direction, I tend to have an idea at the time. Certain things come into my head, and I try to stick with them. I suppose I just want to make people dance, but at the same time I do like the old school deep house – the kind Daso and Pawas used to make. I’ve started a project with TBOY, which I’m really happy with, and it’s kind of in that direction. There is a time and place for all sorts of music so I think you have to have a range to suit the mood. So whilst I’ll be making more dance floor tracks, I’m going to be producing tracks with a bit of variation too.

You just played at BPM in Mexico. Was that your first trip down there? And how was it? Yeah this was my first time at BPM and it won’t be my last. It rained a lot, but I still had an amazing time! I didn’t get to go to every party on the line up, but the ones I experienced tell me that it can only get bigger and bigger. One of my favourites was the Paradise party – it was rammed from the word go, and everyone played there hearts out. The modern love affair party where I played was very much the same, and even though half the sound system blew later on, people were still on the floor, which says a lot. And of course the Circoloco party was a typical Circoloco party – loads of fun, and immense tunes!

Any big projects you’ve got in the pipeline for 2014 you can tell us about? As I mentioned, I’ve got the project with TBOY to finish, I’ve also been doing things with Clive Henry. Clive is one of my all time favourite DJs and a very close friend, so to do something with him is an honour. I’ve also got an EP out on Left Room due out in a couple of months, which is a collaboration with Inxec and has been getting some very good attention from people like Eats Everything. I’ve got to know Inxec really well over the last couple of years so there will definitely be more from us! I have an EP on Resonance Records for my good mate Max Chapman out in March, and it includes a DJ Le Roi remix, which is quality. Finally I should have my Hot Creations EP due out in the near future – I just need to tie it up and be content with it. There’s also a couple of other sneaky collabs in the mix, but it’s too early to really say anything as they’re just in chat phase at the moment.

Thanks, and hope to see you on the island this summer!

Though he's relatively unknown, Spanish DJ and producer Affani's chunky, tech house remix of Daft Punk's 'Technologic' made the rounds at BPM this year wtih everyone from Chus & Ceballos to Roger Sanchez to Technasia (video below). It's also seen support from the likes of Yousef, Groove Armada, Loco Dice, and Claude VonStroke. Not bad for this Barcelona newcomer. Listen and download here, then check out his other quality remixes and productions at his Soundcloud page. We're just glad someone decided to take a crack at remixing a Daft Punk song that wasn't "Get Lucky" this year. Judging by the crowds reaction to Technasia dropping Affani's remix at BPM, I'd say we've got a winner on our hands.

Study: MDMA Might Have Therapeutic Uses

$

0

We've already talked about the fact that MDMA could be a prescription drug by 2021. But now there's more good news and good evidence that the precursor to Ecstasy may be able to help in therapy.

In a study by the Imperial College London, 25 volunteers underwent brain scans on two occasions, once after taking the drug and once after taking a placebo, without knowing which they had been given. The volunteers were then asked to recall their best and worst memories while inside an MRI scanner. They described their favourite memories as more vivid, emotionally intense and positive after MDMA than the placebo, and conversely, described their worst memories less negatively. According to the study, this is because MDMA causes reduced blood flow in regions of the brain linked to emotion and memory, which is likely what leads to feelings of euphoria when on the drug.

This means that MDMA could be useful in helping those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, something that's common in veterans of war or victims of child abuse, recall highly traumatic and painful memories in psychotherapy much more easily, as they'd be less likely to be overcome by negative emotions.

From 7pm to 7am on Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th, BBC Radio 1 will have all-female presenters in celebration of International Women’s Day. The two 12-hour slots will be filled with the station’s first-ever female DJ and its longest serving broadcaster, Annie Nightingale, as well as Annie Mac, Heidi, B.Traits, and Monki among others. Check out the full DJ lineups below.

The DJs will feature the work of both established and emerging female producers during their radio shows, and the network will also play a special Essential Mix by Magda on March 8th.

Annie Nightingale shared her excitement for the idea. “I am looking forward to celebrating the array specialist dance DJs on Radio 1, who are female. Gender is, welcomingly, not an issue nowadays when Radio 1 appoints new DJs and it has been demonstrably supportive of women. We all desire to be judged on our abilities alone in this very competitive field and we all thrive on the respect of our peer group, and our audiences. The lineup shows our individual styles and genres from garage, house, drum n bass, R&B, hip-hop, trap, grime and techno, and we shall have a lot of fun over the weekend.”

Ben Cooper, the Controller of Radio 1, stated: “It’s fantastic that Radio 1 and 1Xtra has such a wide range of female specialist DJs. We are committed to giving opportunities to the best DJs in the world and you are going to hear something very special to celebrate International Women’s Day.”

Recently, we at Pulse UK put together a playlist of the artists we think will be moving and shaking in 2014. So we put together an easy to listen to playlist on Soundcloud with one track from each of the 11 artists we picked so you can judge for yourself. We picked each artist based on what we saw them do in 2013 - play several new and highly credible venues (many of them), get signed to big name management (La Fleur), release on bigger and better labels (Patrick Topping, among others), burst on to the scene (Fango), or put such a new and unique twist on electronic music that they simply cannot be ignored (Darkside). So kick back, relax, and enjoy some of the finest tunes from some of our favourite artists for 2014.

Got any that you think should be on the list? Don't agree? Let us know, and maybe we'll add a few to the list.

Atoms for Peace aren’t the only ones lending their talents to the fashion world. The Martinez Brothers provided the musical soundtrack to Givenchy’s recent Fall/Winter 2014 Men’s Show in Paris. The New York-born brothers’ performance complemented the fashion house’s vision for the show – an urban setting with a basketball court made of neon red lines surrounded by a mesh metal fence.

Designer Riccardo Tisci told the New York Times backstage at the show that his inspirations were “Basketball and Bauhaus.” “It’s a collection about freedom, about lines and blocks; very luxury and elegant.” Check out video from the show below.

Catching Up With AN21

Antoine Josefsson, better known as AN21, was born into a very musical family. As the brother of Steve Angello, AN21 naturally became a key member of the SIZE family and has since produced a series of well-received releases and played at some of the world's biggest festivals and arenas. We had a chance to catch up with him just before the release of his new single "Rebel" with Demitri Vangelis & Wyman to chat about working so closely with family, the dream gig that's at the top of his list, his thoughts on the exploding EDM scene around the world, and what else he has in store for the New Year.

Your track “Rebel” with Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman was played during your brother Steve Angello’s BBC Radio 1 residency debut and is set to release on January 20th on SIZE Records. What is it like working so closely with family? Do you always get along? It is absolutely incredible - everyday I hangout with my best friends. Size stuff is always on my mind and I can’t picture a different life than that. Me and Steve always get along. We grew up being really close to each other and even when we disagree we do it in a nice way so to say.

Having toured around the world so much, what are some of your favorite cities to play? It's just too hard to name a city... each city has its moments!

On the other hand, what are some of the cities, festivals, and events that you haven’t been to yet that are high on your bucket list? I'd love to do Coachella!

How have the US and global electronic music scenes evolved in the last few years from your own experiences? It has become a lot more mainstream, which attracts new fans that don’t necessarily understand it. But it's our job to educate!

You have a huge following on your social media channels – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. What is the key to interacting with all your fans and keeping them engaged online? To be honest, I think I'm terrible on socials, but I just try to be myself.

Who are some emerging producers who have been inspiring you lately? Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman are absolutely incredible. Other than that, we have a duo coming up on Size called ‘Still Young’. But I can’t say more than that! Big mystery.

What else do you have planned for the New Year? I'm going to be focusing on a lot of solo projects which is a lot of fun since I haven’t really done that in the past.
