Andres Zacco
Novasor EP
Airdrop (Release: 17/07/2013)
Argentina’s Andres Zacco has earned himself a reputation for effortlessly combining elements of house and techno into his own interesting four-to-the-floor sound that varies from deep dub excursions to blissful, uplifting dancefloor burners. The Novasor EP continues this tradition with three tracks of intricately crafted house and techno.
The title track feels strongly reminiscent of the early Strictly Rhythm releases which focused on rugged beats and swung basslines, but also features a healthy dose of Detroit soul and warmth. A stomping kick drum, slightly distorted TR-909 percussion and a bouncy TB-303 bassline set up the groove, which is filled out nicely with filtered organs, stuttered bleeps and squeaks and a charmingly weird, wobbly lead synth.
Ocho is Zacco in dub techno mode. Up-tempo and pacey, but deep and sublime, the track brings back memories of early Basic Channel releases. Seamlessly blending an energetic groove comprised of shuffly drums and a deep, rolling bassline with spacious, reverbed atmospherics and lush dub chords, Ocho is perfect for those early morning bliss-out sessions.
Rounding out the release is Sweet (an apt title if there ever was one), a chugging, melodic trip that feels like the moment the sun hits your back when the clouds finally part after a week of rain. The deep, chunky bassline and subtle, off-kilter percussion have just enough punch to keep the track moving, but also give the real stars of Sweet – the delightful chords and washed-out pads – plenty of room to grab you and never let you go.
