So here’s the deal. Red Bull Studio Live Opening Act will be selecting a DJ to play on one of the most devastating sound systems out there at one of South Africa’s biggest social events that dons one of the best stages in the country. If you get selected, you will have to ‘own it’ for 2 hours from 13:00 to 15:00 on the Thursday 8th of August – that would be day 1 of Oppikoppi Bewilderbeast in Northam, Limpopo.
Now it’s easy for you to think ‘great! I’m going to smash out the most rocking high energy set and get the people amped to the max’ kind of set, nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with that at all, keep in mind however, that they want to see, or more specifically hear that you understand the slot, understand that it’s the ‘opening’ of the stage – they are looking for a careful blend of music that transgresses genres, the winning set must showcase a love of music….obviously, it must be the set that lays down the foundations for the day/night that follows. Set the tone. Create the space.
In order to enter you need to:
Answer the following questions in an email (these are to help us to get to know who you are so answer honestly):
What is your current DJ name? If you had to choose another DJ name, what would it be?
Name your top 5 tracks of all time (these are not necessarily tracks you would DJ)
Name one song that has made you cry before (if a song has never made you cry name one song that could make your cry).
What South African artist, aside from yourself obviously, do you think the world should know about and why?
Record / put together a DJ demo mix that best showcases your opening DJ set skill. If you have a mix that is already complete you can submit that i.e. you don’t need to create a mix specifically for this competition but it should showcase your ability to play a great opening slot. Please submit a full track listing of your mix - mixes submitted without track-listings will not be accepted.
Please send a soundcloud / mixcloud or download (wetransfer, mediafire) link of your mix along with answers to the above question, your full name, contact details (email and phone contact) and location / physical address to studio@za.redbull.com by no later than 9AM Tuesday the 23rd of July.
Please take note: Although the winner will be provided with complimentary tickets to Oppikoppi they must supply their own transport to the festival and accommodation at the festival and must take this into account when entering this competition.
If you are unable to get to Oppikoppi on the 8th of August by 11h00, please do not enter.
