H-Foundation & David Durango
Paint It Black
Supplement Facts (Release: 15/07/2013)
The recently reformed H-Foundation have been making quite the splash over the last few months, exciting long-time fans with their comeback and winning over new fans in the process by retaining their raw, stripped-back West Coast house vibes from the early 2000s but injecting them with contemporary European techy flavour. On Paint It Black, the duo team up with equally seasoned David Durango for two classy cuts of deep, chugging goodness.
Surface is tailor-made for dark rooms with low ceilings and crowds that don’t mess around and just want to dance. A driving, stabby bassline and precise percussive grooves propel the track and give it that unmistakable H-Foundation “roll’, while Durango’s input becomes clear once the quirky effects, warbled vocals and haunting synths make an appearance. It’s an interesting meeting of sounds that on paper might sound incongruous, but it definitely works once Surface pounds out of the speakers.
On the flip, Canvas takes a deeper approach. A sultry, slow-burning tech house jam, Canvas shines thanks to it warm, funky chords, breathy vocal samples and shuffly hi-hat rhythms. Every now and then the chords will burst out of the mix thanks to some handy filter work, which adds a sense of dynamism and fluidity to the track without killing its hypnotic, inviting groove.
Paint It Black is a great collaboration which highlights each of its contributor’s strengths and plays up to them.
