Festivals are widely considered one of the toughest businesses to succeed in, but not for promoters of the highly lucrative US event Coachella which this year set an all-time record for gross ticket sales, reports Billboard.
Just how much cash are we talking here? Oh, just a cool $78 million earned across both weekends in 2014 with sold-out attendances totaling 579,000. The $78 million gross was $11 million higher than last year’s $67.2 million and is the third year in a row that the festival has set an all-time record for gross ticket sales since it expanded to two consecutive weekends with identical lineups back in 2012.
Among the big names that performed at the festival this year such as Outkast, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Pharrell, Lorde and Skrillex, were a long list of cutting edge house DJs such as Hot Since 82, Davide Squillace, Nina Kraviz, Dixon, Maceo Plex, Solomun and more, proving that house music is beginning to give EDM and rock a run for their money in America.
