The South African Music Awards cermony (SAMA’s) took place this past weekend on Freedom Day 27th April 2014 in Sun City. The SAMA’s celebrated in style as it was the 20th annual hosting of these awards aptly on the 20th Anniversary of South Africa’s Democratic Freedom.
The South African Music Awards was created to honour and recognize accomplishment in the South African recording industry. While SA's biggest music & record industry names gathered to celebrate the winners and catch a stellar performances by some of the finest artist in the nation. The event was organised by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).
And the SAMA’s went to….Drum Roll Please!
Mafikizolo sealed their comeback in triumphant style at the 20th Annual South African Music Awards – winning five awards at the main ceremony on Monday night to add to their three trophies at the industry awards earlier in the day. This brings the popular Afro-pop duo’s total haul to an incredible eight awards at SAMA 20. They scooped an armful of trophies for Album of the Year, Duo or Group of the Year, Best Pop Album, Best Collaboration, Best Selling Ring-back Tone, Best Selling Full-track Download and Best Selling Mobile Music Download of the Year. And in the most hotly contested category of the night, the Kia Record of the Year, Mafikizolo featuring Uhuru beat out stiff competition to win the public SMS vote for their mammoth hit song Khona.
During the Ceremonies Mafikizolo posted to its social media platforms - “God is Great, thank you Jesus Christ. We just won 3 awards already. Best Selling ring-back tone of the year, Best Selling mobile download of the year and Best Selling full Track Download of the year at the SAMAs. We still waiting for tonight’s main awards, please continue to vote for us.”
