Just announced are new drug driving limits, which the UK government announced are set to come into force in autumn 2014.
The new limits set forth by ministers include 10 micrograms of cocaine, 20 micrograms of ketamine, 10 micrograms of MDMA, two micrograms of cannabis and one microgram of LSD per litre of blood. The good news is that the government understand that certain drugs break down at different speeds, and will be taking this into account. So if you had a wild Friday and are still feeling rough on Monday, you should be okay to drive.
The government is also including certain prescription drugs into the new law, but has decided that the proposed limits need to be reconsidered so that patients who take medicine for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are not affected. Some of the prescription drug limitations would be 80 micrograms of morphine, 500 micrograms of methadone and 550 micrograms of diazepam per litre of blood.
Violators of the newly set limits will be punished similarly to drink-drivers.
