It has been alleged that a number of significant laws will not apply to the new Crown development, as they were not written with the Casino in mind. Reports have surfaced on The Guardian which claim the Barangaroo development will be immune from several major pieces of State Government legislation. Even though the Casino will not open for some 5 years, concerns are already being raised about exemptions the new Packer casino might enjoy.
Recently introduced lock-out legislation will apparently not impact the casino as it is not part of the targeted area. Indeed, the Barangaroo site is a full 5 metres outside of the area in question (acutally). While other venues have been forced to abide by the 1:30am lockout and 3:00am last drinks rules, the new Crown development will be free to pour themselves rich (wordplay!).
The casino will also enjoy immunity from indoor smoking regulations. Punters inside the VIP area of the Packer establishment will be free to light up as they please. The same smoking exemption also exists at other Crown venues around the country.
In addition to these, recently implemented environmental regulations will also not apply to the Casino. The Casino will not be required to uphold the green energy standards which all other businesses are expected to meet. This is arguably the most significant of the exemptions considering the amount of energy the development will be using.
