This edition we greet Vimo Bhana, Johannesburg based DJ with an exclusive mix he masterfully put together for us here at Pulse. Originally hailing from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, DJ Vimo is well known around the country for his eclectic sets he’s graced many a dancefloor with to date.
Vimo’s intricate knowledge of electronic music was spawn in the UK as far back as 1995 where a record store called ‘Vinyl Junkies’ basically became he’s second home in Soho. It wasn't long until Vimo got his first break. Initially veteran DJ John Paul took Vimo under his wing and before the year you would be able to find Vimo’s name on several bills from trending clubs at the time.
His return to South Africa in 1998 manifested into a two year stint playing in commercial venues which laid the basis to triumph over Port Elizabeth’s renowned and lucrative underground scene. In his hometown he continued to invade Castro’s, The Lennox, XXXtreme and 52 Parliament to mention a few. Heavily influenced by international sensation Armin Van Helden and local PE demigod Munro, Vimo has cultivated and skilled rhythms all distilled down to a pure distinctive sound that never fails to rip dance floors apart.
Vimo in association with USM Records and the legendary The Deeper Sound Series released his cut of ‘Deeper Sound of Vimo’, the only out of that that region ever. He carried on to release a solo project that he had been working on dubbed ‘Vimo presents East Coast Flavour’ that proved to be quite successful. The project featured collaborations with long time SA heavy weights Craig de Sousa and Roger De Lux which pulled an enormous amount of praise ultimately leading to a third album.
The 3rd album came from the Natural Groove Series, ‘Natural Groove III by Vimo’ which was also a fantastic release back in the day cementing the fact that Vimo was indeed in the frontline of the EDM scene with his cutting edge and self-proclaimed “Chutney House” sound.
The list of clubs and residencies that Vimo has under his belt is not short, he’s played some of the best parties to date at venues like Carfax, Truth, Groovebar, Panama Bar, Aruba Lounge, he’s played Splash, H2O the Natural Groove parties you name it, it goes on and on – Vimo is veteran of the scene. Being support to acts like NTFO, Richie Hawtin, Stimming, Deadmau5, Tiesto, Style of Eye and Hector Couto will testament to the fact.
