Under their Dusky moniker, British duo Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman are back to see out the summer with another big room EP, Careless. Continuing in typical fashion, all four songs carry a signature 90‘s US house inspired sound with consistent bass appeal; another fitting release for Will Saul’s Aus Music.
‘Careless’ puts a large emphasis on the bass line, a big, bolshy but easy to follow line. Layered vocals give the track dance floor depth and hints towards a garage influence. Uplifting chords are the main attraction in ‘Rise For Love’, the second track on the A side, shuffling between high-notes, major chords and melodic vocal samples that repeat, “Falling in love with you”, suddenly cut mid way though leaving plenty of room for a heavier, driving beat to take over.
On the flip, ‘Esperanto Juggler’ is mysteriously darker thjat the A side offerings, driven by confusing strings and arpeggiated licks, offering a number that'll appeal more to those that prefer a more stiffer, subdued techno sounding approach.
‘Words Later On’ is the fourth and final production on the EP but it packs a palette of serious noise. Suspended over a repeated bass line and droning single-note tones, the closing cut resembles curious sounds you might hear emanating from a blacksmith's workstation. Clanking & clunking industrial FX die out when a swirling synth, bulbous bassline and swinging half-step groove take over on the drop, going for a full heads-down floor baiter packing serious bottom heavy punch and top line hooks.
More of the same from the boys, then - but nalthough the eclectic dancefloor appoach is becoming an all too familiar sound, there's no denying that Dusky do it with serious aplomb and skill, keeping them firmly perched at the top of the UK tree.
