As everyone knows, these days Sankeys has a stellar underground line up each and every night. However, some nights we are given the opportunity to not only say thanks, but also enjoy a set by the man who helped put it all together. Carnival’s musical director, BONES, throws together an amazing night each Saturday by selecting a handful of DJs from one corner of the earth to the next, giving Ibiza a fresh dose of music outside our little yet amazing bubble.
This Saturday was another one of BONES’ extremely well curated nights, with the likes of William Kouam Djoko, Alexis Raphael, Deniz Bilgic and more. A relative newcomer, William KD is a name getting tossed around all the right circles at the moment. And with sets like that of Saturday’s, it’s only a matter of time before Djoko is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. An absolute belter of a set was thrown down tonight by Djoko, not only giving everyone in the crowd what they wanted, but also taking them on a musical journey to places they didn’t even know they should be. Djoko was toying playfully with the crowd, effortlessly crossing genres that spanned all spectrums of dance music. Djoko tossed in crowd favorites like Ninetoes’ ‘Finder,’ rocking the audience to its core, keeping the crowd packed in tight, knowing no matter what he weaved in along the journey, it would be just right.
Thank God We Are Rebels was hosting the Spektrum side room, and with the likes of Deniz Bilgic, there was very good reason to take temporary leave of the hustle and bustle taking place in the main room. Eclectic seemed to be the theme of the evening as Deniz kicked things off with a jungle influenced sound – bass intensive and energetic, slowly moving into a darker and much heavier techno set that kept bodies moving.
If he’s not already on your ‘DJs to watch out for list,’ Alexis Raphael should be. Signed with Hot Natured, and best known for 2012’s monster ‘I Know’ and 2011’s ‘Skalamoosh,’ Raphael has a true knack for creating timeless tunes that destroy dance floors well beyond his peer’s usual expiry date. A staple within the deep house scene, though tossing in the well timed techno bomb here and there for good measure, we heard an energy filled opening followed by the classic wobbles and samples that keeps us all coming back for the deep stuff.
Techno seemed to be the massive theme of the night as all DJs were laying out track after track of heavy hitting floor stompers. Deep house may not be on its way out just yet, but techno is definitely having its moment this season, as DJ after DJ, no matter their musical background, have all been playing out some of the largest techno tracks out there in their respective sets.
