Russ Yallop - 2012 And Onwards

0
0

Russ Yallop; the creator of one of Pulse Radio's most popular and well received podcasts (#55), Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels family member and all round legend catches up with Pulse to recap on the highlights of what was a busy 2012 and what he's got planned for us in 2013, just before he heads to Australia for Finely Tuned and then Mexico for BPM

What were some of your event highlights for the year? Highlight of the year was the time I played before Jamie for PARADISE, at DC10 in Ibiza. Which in itself was another highlight, Paradise that is, every party was incredible.

What are the must go to events for you to be involved with, for career? and for enjoyment? I go to BPM, Miami, and SONAR every year as they all have the winning combo of sunshine and great parties. I was also part of ADE which was also really cool and a great opportunity to hang out with artists you respect but may not get a chance to hang out with that often.

What's been your biggest acheivement this year?
In terms of tangible achievements this year was sparser than last year, however I had a much busier year gig wise and have put in a lot of work 'behind the scenes' which will take me artistically to where I want to be in the near future. But in terms of achievements you can write down I would say my remix of Jamie Jones'"Our Time In Liberty" is something I'll always be proud of, the opportunity and the response.

Is there anything you really wanted to do this year that came to fruition? I wanted to put out another solo ep but there wasn't quite enough hours in 2012 to make it happen.

Who has most impacted your life this year in a positive way? Hmm when I think of this year I think of Luca C and Ali Love actually, the Infinty Ink guys, as 2012 they were a firm part and a great new addition to the gang. I've known them for a while but this year we got to hang out loads and socially and musically they bring a lot to the table.

Is there anything you were introduced to or found this year that you wish you'd found earlier? Not really, I never look back.

Describe your 2012 in 3 words? a good'un

What have you got planned for 2013 so far? Expect a solo ep from me very soon!

Your New Years Resoloutions for 2013 are? To learn spanish once and for all!

The Biggest Mixes of 2012 - Pulse Picks

0
0

The art of the mix is hard to define. There are brilliant sets that are composed of smooth transitions, harmonically matched songs, and rising tempos. Then there are equally brilliant sets which have none of the above - just an amazing selection of tracks, unheard-of edits, and a touch of magic.

At Pulse Radio, sharing mixes is at the core of what we do. Our website is teeming with sets across almost every genre of dance music, from every artist, and every part of the world. For this year-end feature, we asked the Pulse family to tell us about their favorite mixes of 2012. Thanks to the handy Pulse players below, you can listen to each and every one of them, right here. Christmas may be over, but the gifts keep coming. Enjoy!

Nicolas Jaar- BBC Radio One Essential Mix

"The Essential mix could be credited as the "godfather" of the mix series. The show's been running since 1993, spanning and representing dance music's mutations and evolutions in the process. Part of the Essential Mix's appeal is its ability to cover a range of artists - it's not strictly about four to the floor or progressive house these days. Inclusions have come from Calyx & Teebee, an awesome entry from Scottish beat pioneer Rustie, and my personal favourite (and probably everyone else's considering its position as EM of the year), Nico Jaar's excellent, explorative mix. After his superb album "Space Is Only Noise," the Chilean had a lot to live up to. The resulting set certainly delivers, demonstrating Nico's keen musical ear and ability to DJ, even though its a focus that may not have been seen before. Ranging from the likes of Villalobos to NSYNC, and The Field to Beyonce, this brave and superb 2 hour set showcases Nicolas' ambitious musical mantra and ability to take the arbitrary and join them together in fluid unison. Hopefully - on the strength of this - he'll turn out another mix at some point soon."

[Joe Gamp]

Thugfucker + Shaun Reeves Timewave(day)zero Podcast

"Hypnotic river of sound"

"In advance of Damian Lazarus'"Day Zero" 24 hour festival in Playa Del Carmen this December 20-21st Thugfucker and Shaun Reeves teamed up to put together this ethereal workout which we were very proud to offer exclusively to Pulse listeners the week of the show. Both artists prove their mastery of the eclectic here and provide us with something as suited to an afterhours, a pre game drink session or even-as I've found particularly effective-a helpful chill out aid when you need to relax on the plane. It begins with Jim Morrison's prophetic words that essentially forecast electronic music and aspects of its culture and then moves through various types of music that, while not particularly electronic, all feel relevant and worthy of our headphones and stereos. I have yet to play this for anyone who's not enjoyed it immensely and we can now offer it for download to assist with offline enjoyment. Cheers to 2013!"

[Alex Fish]

George Fitzgerald - Pulse 057

"The first Pulse podcast of 2012 was from George Fitzgerald and 12 months later it still sounds just as fresh. Forward thinking to the end, the mix features Trikk and U, two artists ubdoubtedly due for big things in the coming year, as well as MK's classic Jodeci dub. Pretty short at only 30mins long, I actually like the fact that it gets in, packs a punch, does the job and f**ks off. Here's to more big things from George in 2013."

[James Huxley]

Marco Carola - Music On Closing Set - Amnesia Ibiza 2012

"Very difficult to decide ... Maceo Plex pulse podcast is such a master piece ... Lee Foss' modern amusement had the most plays according to my iTunes .. But I'm going to have to go for some relentless straight up charging running marathons on the spot with the entire 5 part MUSIC ON closing set from Marco Carola ... BEAST ...

Special note too to Shaded for the most warped mix I've heard this year"

[Wade Cawood]

Dana Bergquist and Andreas Hansson - Oh! @ Ljunggren 21-09-2012 (Part 1)

"There were quite a few solid mixes that were all vying for my pick of best of the year. John Talabot's FACT mix was one, Michael Mayer's RA podcast another, but you can't argue with your itunes play count. This live mix from Oh! Records' two label heads, Dana Bergquist and Andreas Hansson, recorded at their monthly residency at Stockholm's Ljunggren restaurant, was the mix I eventually settled on, mainly because it made it feel like summer whenever I hit play. There's nothing particularly mind-blowing about the mixing, it's just a solid selection of feel-good, electro-tinged house that's excellently programmed."

[Henry Johnstone]

PillowTalk - Louche Podcast 068

"The trio that hail from San Francisco and call themselves PillowTalk are without a doubt one of the best things to happen in my 2012. Officially forming in 2010, the live trio give a fresh face to the underground house and techno scene we all know and love, adding their own style of disco and classic R&B vibes to everything they touch. Their podcast debut for Louche encompasses an immense variety of sound effects, beats and even a couple different languages. The originality in every minute of the live band’s mix gives one the unavoidable urge to explore what else the funky trio have to offer; their unmatchable flare was even enough to catch the attention of hot labels such as Visionquest, Life & Death and Wolf + Lamb."

[Emma Salditt]

Miike Snow - Essential Mix (15.09.2012)

"By far my favourite Essential Mix of the year, the duo of Karlsson and Winbberg (two thirds of Swedish group Miike Snow) produced a two hour journey through genres, and one of the most feel-good mixes of the year. From starting with Style of Eye's whimsical 'Norway' and ending with the assaulting bass of TNGHT's Higher Ground and DIM's 'Go', this mix has absolutely everything. There are tracks from Four Tet, Wolfgang Gartener, Brodinski, Flying Lotus and so many more. It's been on high rotation ever since it aired and I still find it as exciting and surprising as the first time around. Just superb!"

[Anneliese Pomering]

Tone of Arc - Fabric Promo Mix September 2012

"Tone of Arc's Fabric Mix wins it for me this year by far. Really driving mix  -can't fault it. Definitely keep an eye on these two. Killing it!"

[Kristen Marconi]

Blond:Ish - Get Physical on The Bus @ Robot Heart, Burning Man 2012

"Blond:Ish bring back the amazing vibes of Burning Man to me whenever I hear this mix. With the perfect combination of haunting vocals and dancefloor rhythms, the set evokes the dusty, costume filled landscape of the Playa in an instant. It's great to see these girls take off, and this mix is a good indication of why they've been so successful. To more Blond:Ish, and Burning Man, in 2013!"

[Prab Kumar]

Cheers to 2012 - time to give this year a big hug for all the great moments, a big middle finger for all the rest, and look forward with beaming faces towards a bright, sonically adventurous 2013!

RMC Artists Flow & Zeo Bring The Heat

0
0

Brazilian duo Flow & Zeo have been making music individually since 1999. The couple has taken their work to the next level with acclaimed DJ sets, productions on top labels, their own label Tropical Beats, and a series of parties in Brazil. They are one of the artists that will be gracing the Rio Music Conference in February 2013. The conference is set to be South America's answer to WMC, with massive parties, discussions and workshops, and a host of international talent and clubbers. Check out Flow & Zeo's latest mix, an amazing selection of sexy tech house, and read on!

What does Brazil mean to you?
Brasil is the "hottest" country in the world! We were born here and will always be around. We love the people, the weather, and the natural scenery. And the electronic music events are getting better and better!

What is your favorite club in Brazil?  There is a few clubs that we always love to play... Warung, Vibe, D-edge, Deputamadre, Privilege, Fosfobox and 00 Rio.

What was the best party you’ve been to in the last year?  We had a really great time during the 1 year celebration of noon party in Rio. We are a bit biased because we were involved in the production of this event, but the atmosphere was great, full of friends dancing and celebrating life! Just great. We have been booking artists like DJ T., Miguel Campbell, Danny Daze, Maxxi Soundsystem, Tale of Us, Daniel Bortz, Tanner Ross, Laura Jones, No regular play and many others.

Who is your favorite DJ or Producer right now, both from Brasil and abroad?  We like very much all the productions from Tale of Us. From Brazil we could name a few as there are a lot of new talents : Fabo, Gabe, Gui Boratto, Digitaria, HNOO, Funky Fat, Nytron, Rockerr entre outros.

Who helped inspire you to get involved with electronic music?  It was something natural that happened. We were going to parties and this kind of music changed our lives. When we realised that we were already envolved with events, then added djing, studio work, a label... it's totally addictive.

If you could get involved with any label at the moment who would it be and why?  We admire labels that are in our opnion breaking some boundries, ie. Life and Death, Visionquest, Hypercolour, Hot Creations, Circus Company, Crosstown Rebels, amongst others. At the moment we are focused on our own label Tropical Beats, for the release of our first Digital V/A, called Tropical Treasures, that will be out on mid January 2013 and will deliver some of the unreleased tracks we've been playing during the last months.

What are your thoughts on RMC?  We've participated since the first year, playing and with our label Tropical Beats. We think it is very important to have an event in Brazil that showcases culture and information about the scence, not only the parties but a big meeting for networking too.

Where would you like to DJ that you haven’t yet had the chance to?  We would love to go to Japan and Australia. Every year we do a tour around Europe, and in the beggining of 2013 we will play in a festival in Panama and some gigs in Mexico.

What can we look forward to from you in 2013?  We've been playing all around Brazil and releasing on many labels like Electronique Digital, Kote Records, Nurvous, Disclosure Crew, Sprout, Kling Klong. In January we will have our track "Missing" out on Warung Recordings and there is much more to come. LISTEN: Death On The Balcony's Gorgeous 41 Track Mix

Catz N Dogz are more than artists and DJs. Their label, Pets Recordings, has been influential over the last several years, breaking artists like Eats Everything onto the world stage. Known for their playful aesthetic, the duo has established a podcast series called the "Petcast," often accompanied by a fun video.

This episode of the Petcast is one of the most interesting yet, with a selection of rock, downtempo, house, reggae and more from the UK's Death on The Balcony. Known for a hazy mix of deep house and other things, their productions are rich in melody and this mix reveals some of their inspirations. In a world dominated by electronic music, this mix is incredibly refreshing. Acoustic guitars and underproduced tracks reign supreme, each song a part of the journey. Check out the teaser vid, mix, and unbelievably varied 41 song tracklist below. We're really happy you're sharing this with us.

The Nightclub Experience: Viewer Discretion Advised

0
0

We've all been there - you're at the club, hanging out, not too smashed, having a chat, a laugh, whatever. Then you look across the room and notice something that makes you say "dear lord, I hope I wasn't like that last week." Well, you probably were, and here at Pulse we don't like to make fun of people, but for a light hearted Friday laugh let's have a look at this week's most ridiculous pictures to emerge from nightclubs around the world (thanks to EmbarrassingNightclubPhotos.com). Remember, we're laughing with these people, not at them, mainly because sometimes we are them (well not in all cases). Warning: some are not for the faint hearted.

10. The oompa loompa.

He was hoping (in vain) that the neon-orange of his spray tan would not be visible in the dark corners of the club. Unfortunately, he met the fake tanners worst enemy - camera flash!

9. The Cheeky Drinker

More clever than embarrassing, this dude shows he really wears the pants in this threesome by taking advantage of the unexpected free-drink situation. Either that, or the woman he spent all night patiently seducing has clearly fallen for another man, and he's taking revenge however he can.

8. Love at First Slobber

We at Pulse really do believe in love at first sight, and encourage public displays of affection where and when possible. What you're seeing below appears to be some sort of alien mating ritual, and is currently being studied by NASA.

7. Ibiza's Next Top Model

Flattery is an important element of friendship. However, we're wondering if there's a subtle way to answer "does this make my butt look big?"

6. Sometimes We All Gotta Go.

5. Maybe If I Make A Wasted Face I Can Get Away With This

It's unclear who would be more embarrassed after the fact.

4. Impatience Is a Virtue

This couple demonstrates one of my favorite positions - "public spread eagle on the ticketing table." We're pretty sure he got in for free after this.

3. It's Only Funny Because It's Not You

Another passionate couple caught in a hot moment, these two appear to be slightly off balance. Ah, love.

2. Screw Waiting

This gentleman is likely going far, as his out-of-the-box thinking shows. Rather than waiting for everyone in the bathroom to finish powdering their noses, he goes for what he wants, no hesitation. We need more people like this in public office.

1. Not The Kids!

Is there nothing sacred left in this world? Do we really need a whole world of honey-boo-boo childs?! These women apparently think so, and I'm having a cry.

Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more things to make you feel better about your life...

Happy New Year From Horse Meat Disco

0
0

Horse Meat Disco have had another unstoppable year in 2012, as the quartet of disco-purveyors and DJs continue to push their fun loving, musically conscious brand of disco and house to crowds around the globe. Taking a unique spin on modern genre traits and fusing them with hard to find classics and obscure gems, HMD's musical flavours and dedication to sharing the music they love have helped make them a trusted name of underground dance music. Plans for further compilations are in the making, besides plans for a debut artist album, further productions and remixes and of course, continuing their long-running night currently housed at The Eagle in London. Pulse thought it a mighty fine idea to ask Jim Stanton and Severino - half of the gang - to mix the very last podcast of the year for Pulse. Made up of some of their favourite tunes (old and new) and the tracks receiving love on the floor, get yourself ready for the big night ahead through this luscious and fragrant mix. Happy New Year to all of our readers - see you in 2013!

[Read on for tracklisting and download]

Thanks for joining us guys and for mixing our end of year podcast – what has 2012 meant to you personally in terms of career highs and the progression of dance music? Severino: 2012 for Horse Meat Disco has been about lots of Sunday evenings at The Eagle and amazing guests and also our Lovebox gig too with people like Optimo and stuff. At The Eagle we've people like Derrick Carter, Andrew weatherall, Kenny Dope and Dave Morales all come down to join us. It’s been a great year for guests at our little Sunday evening event . Music wise, we've been locked in the studio and building up lots of music and tracks, and we’re building up to an album... hopefully with some guests to produce vocals for us too. Recently, the remix we did for our friends Stereogamus from Australia - it's been having lots of great feedback.

And for the Stereogamus remix, are you happy with the result? Did you spend some time on it? Jim: Yeah its a great track the original. It's down to our friends San Francisco sisters Honey Soundsystem, and the label they created with Berlin boys CockTail d'Amore. I dont think we sweated blood over it or anything. We’re really pleased with the way it came out. We played it everywhere, from NYC to The Warehouse Project. It’s had some great response and we’ve been very pleased with the way it has been received. It certainly hits the right spots.

Where’s been a really exciting and new place to play in 2012? Jim: Personally, all the same places we've always played have been great still. Places like New York they never fail to impress us, they always greet us with open arms. Berlin is still brilliant and every time we play there it’s fantastic. In terms of new places, I think Severino is best to answer that as he has had his residency at Pool Disco in Ibiza.

Severino: The Warehouse Project and their new venue has been a good one and that’s gone really cool. But I’ve also been doing this little party in the Summer in Ibiza at Usuhaia with a friend that I used to put parties on with in Shoreditch House. Pretty much every Saturday during the Summer I was there. It was more of a housey vibe though as the space is so big, so I liked to play using my more house-focused side.

I love things that are obscure and lots of old stuff that people have forgotten about – but Horse Meat Disco - as our remixes reflect - definitely goes for the slower and more housey, modern side… on that same tip along with our good friends such as Soul Clap. It’s like an ‘80s proto-house sound.

Are there any side projects coming up that we should keep our eyes peeled for? Not as yet but this year I got approached by Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter’s Classic label to make this compilation 'Through The Eyes of Severino', made from obscure tracks that may have been forgotten about. I did some remixes for it too and one of the biggest has been put in the mix – an old Brett Johnson track and it’s got an amazing, early sample in it  - again it’s all about the early eighties vibe.

In terms of 2012, which artists and tracks have made a great impression on you this year? Which new artists have caught your eye? Oh man, there have been so many that impressed me this year! We've been into that Soul Clap, wolf + Lamb stuff. The Bicep boys have had an amazing year and I'm also feeling Psychemagik too. There’s been some great stuff coming out – Todd Terje has had an amazing year… Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and labels like Loveshack and stuff, that sound is big for us at the minute too. As we said before, we've been looking for those newer tracks to infuse with those classic disco sounds. That’s been trademark for Severino [laughs] and I guess I just follow in his path in a way. Luke and James - the other two that make up HMD - are proper crate diggers but the two of us (I’m not sure if it’s actually laziness or if we’re just into the newer stuff) but we like to fuse these things together.

So is this part of HMD's musical remit for 2013? Keep the connection between the influences of the past and its effect on the contemporary sound? I feel we have to bridge the gap – the kids out there are really into disco and stuff, that’s something I've really noticed. Compared to 2 years ago – well we played out a lot – but it took much more effort to get the dancefloor involved than it does no. People are super savvy and into it. But at the same time, you have to keep nodding towards the future to help things to keep moving. I think that’s something that’s been caught in our mix for Pulse.

Toby Tobias - Messing With My Mind

Toby Tobias
Messing With My Mind
[Burek]

Croatia’s Burek imprint finishes a strong 2012 with its fourth offering of quirkily different house. Stepping up to the plate for this end of year tour de force is London’s very own Toby Tobias.

The peak time lead on the EP, Running Away, uses the heavily sampled Loleatta Holloway appearance at NYC’s Better Days to new effect. Underpinned by off-kilter beats and a swirling, cyclical melody, Loleatta’s voice incites to “hold somebody” and “throw your hands in the air”. Rave-like pads and synth stabs provide the forward momentum of the track and certainly carry it forward but it’s in the post break build where the track really shines. The arrangement starts breaking apart, fracturing the constituent elements whilst a droning, heavy saw-toothed synth lead and light conga trills rupture through the atmosphere as the whole thing forms once again around a solid raw groove.

The second original track on the EP, Tres Mal, features the vocals of Be Atwell, an associate of Alabama 3. His characteristic, bluesy intonation provides the vocal hook (and title of the whole EP) which intersperses the track, sometimes abbreviated into semi-coherent, filtered murmurs. The beat track harkens back to Toby’s formative B-Boy influences, with small inflections of 808-ism ricocheting into the track, whilst layers of tribal drums and a hypnotic marimba-esqe sound drive the track forward. Topping this heady mix are woozy synth parts which amble in and out of sight, providing the physical motivation for boogieing.

One of the most talked about young British underground techno producers of the last few years, John Heckle, makes his debut on Burek with his remix of Tres Mal. While usually known for producing raw, psychedelic jacking tracks, John explores his jazzier side on this remix. Deep, sweepingly evocative chords, occasional vibraphone melodies and an echoing snip from the vox of the original flow into strong rattling snares and a deliciously jazzfunk key line that shows off John’s musical flair and rich understanding of North Eastern US house.

The Adriatic’s own house impresario, Homeboy, serves up a dub remix of Running Away. Aquatic pads and big strings circle the 808 percussion elements of the original, creating a softer, deep house version which evokes the Croatian festivals that have become a regular part of the European summer season in the last half a decade. If the original is all about dark clubs and urban street scenes, then this remix is about beaches, sunsets and swimming in azure blue waters.

All in all the EP provides four suitably diverse feels that will appeal to disco and house heads of a variety of persuasions and represents another cornerstone in the history of this young but highly rated European label.

Benjamin Semtek is a relatively new name on the scene. The UK house producer has not made major waves yet, but that may all change very soon. As a New Year's gift, the Don't Be Afraid Records label boss has made available to the public an entire LP's worth of free music to download. His style could best be described as "quirky dance," with songs like "Tacos for Dinner" that contain samples of Alan Ginsberg poetry and run almost 11 minutes long. "Coeur De Lyon," samples Jodeci and is a much more straightforward house track, while "Tower" is a menacing piece of techno. Check out samples of the tracks in the player below, and click here to download the full zip.

Tone of Arc Reaches for Higher Consciousness: Exclusive

0
0

Tone of Arc may have burst onto the scene in 2012, but the group has had a life-long relationship with music. Derrick Boyd and Zoe Presnick, a couple and dynamic musical duo, have harnessed the power of sonic waves and interplanetary love to bring their projects to fruition, which include beautiful works on No.19 and a large quantity of unreleased material to boot. Derrick, whose production history is deep, previously went under the moniker Dead Seal and released on influential labels like Crosstown Rebels and My Favorite Robot. After seeing success with several EP's in 2012, Tone of Arc is performing at No.19's Social Experiment party this year at the BPM festival on January 6th. Prior to taking the stage, Derrick sat down with us to have a chat about the Age of Aquarius, frustrating experiences with sending demos, and how to live and play in a state of harmony and love with the universe. Read on for an insightful interview with a deeply philosophical and spiritual artist who is just beginning the ascent to stardom.

2012 is drawing to a close. Amidst potential meteor strikes and other Mayan havoc, Tone of Arc seems to have cause to celebrate. As you reflect on a successful year, including a debut with the inimitable No. 19 label, what brings the biggest smile to your faces?  Well that's easy. Seeing happy and inspired faces as the by-product of our music makes us scream inside with joy. That and being able to work with each other as a business and relationship makes for a great life. How often do producers and DJs get to travel the world with their best friend and love? Most wives or girlfriends sit at the side line on the bench while their men soak up the limelight. That makes for difficult, unstable relationships and that's speaking only from how it would be if I didn't include my wife.

Speaking of the Mayan prophecies, what's your take on the meaning, if any, of the end times that are now upon us?  Well, this could take a minute. Mayan prophecy or not things are changing. Listen to the words people are saying: "Consciousness, evolving, meditation, yoga, organic, healthy, ascension." We're looking for a huge change and it has to come from within if we want to reap the benefits of being super humans. People are starting to acquire their third strand of DNA back from the original 12 strands - there is a huge part of our brain we don't use as we simply haven't had the codes or accessibility. There's a very long story about all that from thousands of years ago, but we are talking about it now. Understanding the solar system helps with understanding how and when we are affected. Not only does the earth orbit around the sun but the whole solar system including the sun has an orbit in space that completes every 25,000 years. This is not Mayan but comes from other trusted sources: science and astrology and Aliens. As this orbit goes around, it enters and leaves astrological houses. We have been in the age of Pisces for the past 2,500 years. This is also referred to as "the dark ages" ruled by governments and politics. We are now fully in Aquarius, named "the age of light" for the next 2,500 years. Who knows what's going to happen? We've been controlled for so long it's hard to think outside the box, but we need to learn how to have compassion for the planet and protect it cause right now it looks like we don't give a fuck.

In other interviews, you've described your sound as being "channeled," sometimes with the help of a margarita. As musicians, how do you sift through all the influences in your heads to focus on a signature sound or even genre?  The sifting and creative process happens without thought. I don't think at all while making the music. Pure focus. It happens organically in an instant for me. I often say that I don't own what I do because I consider music a living being that evolves, constantly rotating, expanding and contracting like all things in the universe. It's coming through me connected to all things, living, nonliving, physical or etheric. It's all been done before and everything you have ever heard and liked lives inside you and all around you. So I take a piece here and find a piece there but I assure you I'm only repeating the same notes as anyone else has ever played, whether it's here or on some other beautiful planet. I took mushrooms on a solar eclipse and heard music not of this world. Breathtaking, but where did it come from? When I was a young adult I used to study mushrooms and make sure what I was hearing and seeing was actually there. My test results were as follows: mushrooms give you 6th dimensional sight and several other gifts but we have not attained the right of passage so our psyche is often met with instability or insanity in 3D. What you see and hear is actually there all the time, you're just not there yet.

Derrick, you've said you've been making music most of your life, with 100's of songs you haven't released. What are some of the major frustrations you've encountered in your time as a musician. What did they teach you?  I learned to never give my music to labels or people you don't know without them asking for it first. A few years ago I sent my best work to labels I looked up to and supported. They responded with "Don't ever send us music again." It was the worst feeling I ever had as a producer, I had spent my entire life making this music. People are rude and inconsiderate when it comes to ego. So I never sent another thing again without being asked for it. It taught me self respect and that my music will do the work for me. I don't need to try and I'm not looking for popularity contests to enter so fuck em. They know not what they do.

Your affiliation with Jonny White's No. 19 label seems only natural. Both you and he have a forward-thinking aesthetic that's evident in your music, videos, and events. Tell us a little bit about where you met Jonny, and how the partnership bloomed.  I met Jonny in LA when I played live for one of Damian Lazarus's parties a couple years back. We went to an after party, and I was captivated by Jonny's DJ skills and music. I was also greatly inspired by Art Department at the time. I think Jonny came to remember me by a spiritual story I told about being left for dead in a desert outside of Temecula, CA and covered in leeches. That's a long story too but I went back a couple months later to LA when they visited again and I played Jonny my latest works of art at Droog's house. Jonny asked me to be on the label right then and we shook on it. I began immediately working on the album. They asked for 12 songs. I gave them 30 something and counting. I love Jonny, the man has taken care of me like no one else.

You released a cover of Q Lazarus' 1988 track "Goodbye Horses" on No. 19 earlier this year. Q once said "the song is about transcendence over those who see the world as only earthly and finite. The horses represent the five senses from Hindu philosophy and the ability to lift one’s perception above these physical limitations and to see beyond this limited Earthly perspective." In your own words, what does this song mean to you and why did you decide to cover it?  It was really funny to find out the meaning of the song after I had already covered it. I nearly flipped cause it's exactly what I have interest in, so that was meant to be. But really I had been playing that record in my sets for years. It's my all time favorite. I swore I would never do a cover for all my life because I thought if you have the ability to make something new then don't try to make your way in the world through someone else's work. But I was coming to a place in my production where this was starting to sound like fun, to see if I could do it first of all. Jonny said right at that moment out of the blue that I should do a cover, and I said I was thinking the same thing. This was a hard decision because there are so many to choose from that I love so much. So I picked my fav and it was finished in 6 hours. It flew together like it was fate. I then started the next day on another, Portishead's "The Rip." That one took three days to train my voice and learn all the chords by ear.

The music video for Goodbye Horses, conceived with Jonny White, begins with the omen, "often times we blindly kidnap ourselves in an attempt to become whole." It moves through some bizarre and alien realms, featuring Derrick almost fully nude at one point. What were the themes that inspired the video?  It was strictly to pay homage to the movie and song, to complete what was almost done. It's what I felt would "Dead Seal The Deal" and put an end to rubbish covers of the song and poorly edited versions of video compilations that take away form the class of the original. Of course the video is not too spiritual, nor is it giving positivity to life, but it is acting and should only be seen as acting the part of self evolution and the struggles we go through to achieve a higher state of being.

Your live sets seem to be constantly developing. Sometimes it's just Derrick and a guitar, other times Zoe is singing as well. How do you go about putting together a live set, and how do you see your setup evolving? Is a band in the cards for 2013?  As I make new songs I add them to the live set. When people can afford both of us to perform then I bring Zoe. I had to do the footwork to be able to bring her, just as I'm doing the footwork to be able to hire a full time band. These things take time and I must select the perfect match of musicians that won't collide with me, that's the elephant in the room. I haven't met anyone that's on the level yet but my standards are high and I have no doubts that I will find just the right people to make a family with and feed off of each other...like back when I was in a high school garage band.

The BPM festival marks a gathering of some of the best producers, DJs, and music appreciators in the underground electronic music world today. You're playing at the No.19 Social Experiment party on the 6th, how does it feel to showcase your sound to such a global gathering, and what do you have in store?  Oh man, it's an honor to play for every one of these parties I've played and will play. It's the life that I have consciously manifested and I never sold out for a "regular" job. I ate music for dinner over and over and sacrificed my health and stability so that I could have all the time I wanted to make love with sound. To create something I could share. To express myself and tell my many stories. This is my dream and now I can dream some more knowing that dreams come true.

Tell us briefly about your studio setup - are there any pieces of kit or instruments that you can't live without?  My heart and ears are the only thing I can't do without. All the rest is what a poor boy could manage and it's nothing to boast about.

Lastly, what are your major aspirations for 2013, as musicians and/or earthlings (assuming you are in fact earthlings...)  You know, I have been looking forward to this moment. Now that it's about 2013 and we're alive I suppose I'll just live in the moment like I always have and give my best efforts to protect the planet and show the universe that I care very much about it's inhabitants. And have a fucking blast doing it.

New EDM Reality Show From Jersey Shore Creator

At its best, reality TV is an engaging, highly endearing and addictive form of entertainment. I recall hours spent watching back-to-back episodes of Big Brother, crying along with the rest of my apartment mates and our dogs. At its worst, though, the genre is undoubtedly a pimple on the ass of modern society. What began as an endearing tale of Survivor has turned into a rampant cancer that has afflicted nearly every limb of televised media.

Now, things are getting personal. While Simon Cowell may have shelved his American Idol approach to DJs, it looks like Doron Ofir, the casting agent behind Jersey Shore and Pauly D, has gotten in on the action. He has set up the website http://www.edmcasting.com with a call out to all producer-DJs. With a massive questionnaire and an even longer disclaimer, the video at the top of the sites asks "Are you the next superstar DJ?"

Well are you? The idea of a superstar DJ has changed quite a bit over time. When DJing first became a "thing," legends like Frankie Knuckles and Danny Tenaglia were well known for their ability to put together masterful, epically long sets. Now, it seems like pyrotechnics and a cute outfit (think Paris Hilton) are good enough. Still, if you've got a hankering for being on TV, can mix a few records, and don't mind signing away the rights to your life, it might be worth a shot. Who knows, maybe quality will finally trump.

LISTEN: Set That Got DJ Shadow Kicked Out of Mansion

As we reported a few weeks ago, DJ Shadow is the latest in a list of revered jocks being kicked off the decks at commercial nightclubs. Mark Farina and Dennis Ferrer suffered similar fates not long ago, with Shadow's ousting at Mansion nightclub in Miami adding fuel to the fire. Shadow has kindly posted the set that got him kicked off the decks, so if you want to know what NOT to play at Mansion on a weekend, give it a listen. Covering some fairly broad sonic ground, the heavily hip-hop influenced mix contains a lot of bass and apparently more melody than Mansion could handle. It begins with an ominous vocal stating what we presume are Shadow's thoughts on the matter. Have a listen yourself and give us your opinion. Would this get you going, or were the promoters right in showing Shadow the door?

Eats Everything's Stolen Equipment Returned

0
0

A few weeks ago, we reported that Eats Everything had his equipment stolen at the DJ Mag Best of British awards party in London. The theft was so severe that Eats, aka Daniel Pearce, was left unable to perform, a cruel fate given his award for Best DJ. Well, just yesterday DJmag.com received at their HQ, from an anonymous source, the entire contents of Daniel's bag, including his USB sticks with years of musical work, and headphones. The note said: "'It was an accident, Sorry! Merry Christmas." Daniel's official response was: "'Wow! That's mental! So weird? That's great news though!'

Ladies and Gents, let this be a lesson: don't leave your USBs hanging around. Too many DJs/artists have suffered a similar fate (for example, Art Department). While this may be the age of free love, USB theft is nothing to shake a stick at.
