Pulse Picks: Art Basel Parties

0
0

It’s that time of year again! In the midst of holiday season is Art Basel, when the city of Miami is filled with the best and the brightest artists who come to town to showcase their work. Spend your days exploring the design district and art exhibits and your nights out on the town. Check out our party picks:

Get your Wednesday night fill with Touch of Class Records at The Electric Pickle for their special Art Basel Showcase. Celebrating the upcoming third release of new artist Pattern Drama, TOC introduces disCern, the newly signed project from Jonny Cruz and Silky, alongside label founders Michael Tello and Ray Zuniga (aka Signal Flow). Head downstairs to catch the Pickle residents holding down the fort in true form and prepare yourself for a night of great music, friends, dancing and loads of shenanigans, of course.

Our friends at LINK & Miami Rebels have an exciting weekend planned at venues all over the city featuring an all-star roster of DJs and producers. Thursdays at Treehouse are never a night to miss and this week is no exception. Catch German legend Ben Klock and Canadian trio, My Favorite Robot at this South Beach spot. Ben Klock is the hard-hitting techno producer and founder of the Klockworks imprint. The Berlin-born producer has been a monthly resident at the city’s legendary Berghain nightclub since 2004. His remixes for artists such as Kerri Chandler, Martyn and Depeche Mode along with his Berghain mix have helped to solidify his name and style as a staple in the global techno scene.

Jared Simms, James Teej and Voytek Korab formed My Favorite Robot in Montreal in 2002. Originally an act, the trio became a label in 2008 and is part of the wave of Canadian talent that emerged a few years ago, including their friends Art Department from No.19 Music. The past few years have been big for MFR, with releases on Visionquest, Life & Death, Crosstown Rebels and Sasha’s Last Night On Earth imprint, they have made a strong mark on the music industry. Check out their most recent album, Atomic Age, which was released on No.19 in September.

The weekend kicks off on Friday at Story with Richie Hawtin and at Treehouse for a merger of great minds with Get Physical <3 Cityfox. Richie Hawtin is at it again with his legendary Basel set. Last year it was at LIV and this year it is at Story. The Detroit techno legend, who also produces under the moniker Plastikman, has been making waves in the electronic music community for decades. His ENTER. parties are celebrated worldwide, most notably in Ibiza where they are a weekly fixture at Space during the summer season. Former Plus 8 label boss and current Minus imprint master, Richie is never one to disappoint and Story is the perfect venue to host his technologically mastered sets.

Gear up for another big night at Treehouse! Two of the industry’s most recognizable labels are pairing up on Friday to bring you an evening of sonic perfection. Get Physical and Cityfox bring M.A.N.D.E.A.R. (M.A.N.D.Y. b2b Matthew Dear), Dinamo Azari (Azari & III), Bob Moses (live), Markus Linder and Gregorythme together for a special Art Basel performance.

M.A.N.D.Y. is the Berlin-birthed duo comprised of childhood friends Phillip Jung and Patrick Bodmer. In 2002, they joined forces with their friends Booka Shade and DJ T and formed Get Physical Records. They are playing a very special b2b set with Matthew Dear. Matthew co-founded the Ghostly International label in 1999 and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound, one year later. Matthew is a rare bread of DJ, well-respected and not bound to one specific genre. His wild, slightly weird, rhythm-driven songs and his experimental nature will definitely create the perfect vibe combined with M.A.N.D.Y.’s sound.

Saturday is host to Guy Gerber’s celebrated Supplement Facts event. You have two opportunities to attend the Supplement Facts party, so there’s no excuse to miss this must-do event. The day party is at the Delano Hotel from 7:00pm – midnight and features Guy along with his friend and Visionquest co-founder, Ryan Crosson. The night event is at Treehouse and Matthew Dear, Bill Patrick and Mao Fonnegra will accompany Guy.

If you’re in the mood for some serious techno, head over to Story for Music On with Marco Carola and fellow Italian, Leon. Marco’s legendary Music On party has been making waves across the globe since its launch in Miami in 2011. After a hugely successful summer residency in Ibiza at Amnesia, Music On began its American residencies at Marquee on Fridays and Story on Saturdays. This week marks the seventh week of this monumental event. Be sure to get there early because this party will be packed before you know it.

If you’re still going strong after this massive weekend, head over to Treehouse on Sunday and catch Flying Circus on its December tour! We spotlighted this epic tour last week and this is the second stop. Started by Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito, aka Audiofly, in 2006, Flying Circus has become a festive phenomenon. The party had a very successful residency at Sankeys Ibiza this summer and has hit up cities like Russia, Berlin, Peru, Detroit and Ukraine. The party will also support a cause close to Anthony and Luca’s heart, Save Japan Dolphins. To learn more check out our preview here. Catch Audiofly, Ali (of Tiefschwarz), George Fitzgerald, Lee Curtiss and Sonja Moonear at this monster FC session. We can’t think of a better way to wrap up your weekend!

Pulse Radio's favourite take-aways from EMC 2013

Electronic Music Conference 2013 is well underway, and with such a breadth of speakers and ideas flying in just about every direction, we just couldn't wait to share some with you.

Beatport CEO Matthew Adell brought some incredible insights to the table with his keynote speech. Seemingly unfazed by the "hating" and "bitching" that underpins much of the electronic dance music industry, Adell had a short, sharp message for all - "shut the fuck up and dance". Adell also went on to share his views that the "recorded music business is going down the toilet and it's not getting much better" and how feels that the laptop has replaced the guitar as the instrument of choice for the modern musician.

Elsewhere, at the "Booms, Busts and Bidding Wars" festival panel featuring Adam Zammit of Big Day Out, Richie McNeill and Dror Erez of SFX Totem, Simon Coffey of Q-Dance Australia and Brett Robinson and Jason Ayoubi of Future Music Entertainment was, as to be expected, incredibly engaging and fiesty (not to mention hilarious).

Adam Zammit discussed the idea of the niche festival; "...niche is a great way to build a business, niche is an exciting way to maintain a dialogue within a single community". Meanwhile, SFX Totem CEO Richie McNeil offered a particularly humourous answer to a question about bidding and artists procurement, quipping "It's easy - I put an offer in and Brett (Robinson) doubles it". Adam Zammit conceeded that Australian festival organisers were "competitive assholes" while Dror Erez noted that "..you have to start building alliances to have better buying power.. hopefully it will gauruntee the supply of acts going forward".

The sticky topic of ticket prices for festivals was also raised to the panel, to which Adam Zammit responded that "the market tells you what they want to pay - this industry is not guilty of profiteering through ticket prices". Simon Coffey predicited that a fall in the Australian dollar would push ticket prices up over the next two or three years, a point that Zammit vehemently disagreed with, explaining that "there is no single straw breaking the ticket price back".

EMC 2013: Top 5 Guilty Pleasures From The Underground

0

Aside from being incredibly interesting and insightful, the panels at the Electronic Music Conference in Sydney today have had their fair share of amusing moments. Case in point: the 'Crossing Over and Keeping Your Cool' discussion, where the likes of Chad Gillard from Future Classic, Vic Edirisinghe of Astral People, longstanding Aussie DJ Robbie Lowe and more chewed the fat on what it means to be a "sell out," amongst other issues. Then came question time from the audience.

"What's everyone's guilty pleasure?" came a voice from the audience, which turned out to be Future Classic head honcho Nathan McClay. And, well, here they are...

Murat Kilic (The Spice Cellar):"That Avicii track."

Chad Gillard (Future Classic):"Mariah Carey's beautiful."

Vic Edirisinghe (Astral People):"Call me baby my fave pop track of the year."

Robbie Lowe (DJ):"I still listen to Wham. I’m a kid of the 80s."

and then to finish...

James Ware (Waving At Trains):"Flume is my guilty pleasure."

What was that about selling out, fellas?

You May Not Want That Next Energy Drink After Reading This

0

Almost all of us do it. Maybe we had a few too many the night before a big exam. Maybe our friends dragged us out to the club when we would just rather stay in. For one reason or another, we down a few energy drinks to get a quick pep in our step. But new studies are finding this type of behaviour might be riskier than we thought.

According to a recent study, researchers now say that healthy adults who down sugary energy drinks, which are also high in the amino acid taurine, had increased heart contraction rates an hour later.

“We’ve shown that energy drink consumption has a short-term impact on cardiac contractility,” said Jonas Dörner, M.D., of the University of Bonn, Germany in a news release. "There are concerns about the products’ potential adverse side effects on heart function, especially in adolescents and young adults, but there is little or no regulation of energy drink sales.”

The researchers did a cardiac MRI on 18 healthy adults both before and after consuming a caffeinated energy drink with taurine, revealing more peak strain in the heart’s left ventricle, where oxygenated blood flows from the lungs and is pumped to the aorta. The study comes off the back of recent findings in the US that reveled trips to the emergency room hit 20,000, doubling from the previous year. Researchers advise people with known cardiac arrhythmias to avoid energy drinks, hypothesizing that changes in contractility could provoke arrhythmias.

Kinky Disco’s 7th Birthday in Full Review

0
0

When I was commissioned to write this piece I had heard about Max Cooper but had never given him much of my time for various reasons and was not too sure what to expect from him on the night.

His mixes on Soundcloud made me feel as if he would be better suited for perhaps a morning afterparty with everyone lying snug in blankets chewing gum and blowing Vicks in each other’s faces as the sun comes up. Alas, I was excited to see what he was going to bring to the party so to speak. South African audiences like it a bit harder than our European counterparts so I was convinced he would have his hands full. Boy was I wrong.

We arrived at the Seapoint library collection point at about 1 p.m. on Saturday only having slept for about 3 hours after the previous nights mayhem delivered by Playtime in Paradise with Stimming. Don’t ask.

We were greeted by smiles and friendly faces, one of the most jacked up and professional taxi services that I have had the pleasure of dealing with, really top class. On time and safe, you need no more.

It wasn't 15 minutes before we were en route to the venue. The venue had been a contentious issue in the run up to the event, the organisers had tried desperately to secure another venue but ultimately it ended up back at the popular Ostrich farm. I must say I am not averse to the Ostrich farm as a venue, I think it’s a great space, not too far from town but not too close either, my only gripe would be that it has been over-used over the past few years. That being said, I felt that there could have been a bit more effort put into the decor at the event. Don't get me wrong, the setup was awesome, they had a very decent sound rig and the dancefloor was up to scratch but I just felt that the rest of the space was underutilised. Perhaps a bonfire?! (I think there were a few people who agreed with me) but once again, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, chances are the venue had something to say about that. Altogether, the space seemed a little bland against the backdrop of the stellar line-up. Just my opinion.

By the time Mark Henning came on, the crowd was hungry to get going, literally champing at the bit.

Mark did not impress me all that much, his set seemed to casually saunter past and it wasn't until Bruno Morphet came on after him that the crowd really got into it.

It has to be said that Bruno was in fine form, his set was great. But Thiago (Kanan K7) not wanting to be out done, delivered what was in my opinion a thunderous set with more belters in his bag than there were on the dancefloor. If you are looking for his set, it’s over there, in the top drawer. Epic set! You had to be there.

Then finally at 10 p.m. it was time for Max to hold down the fort, and boy oh boy did he do just that. I have to take my hat off to this guy, he took a dancefloor that had just been aurally raped for 3 hours and delivered a set that injected a fresh-sense of energy from start to finish. I was shocked at the layer upon layer of sounds and textures hidden within in his tracks. There were times when I was so overwhelmed that I had to take a few minutes to regain my composure before I could continue dancing. I kid you not, if you were not there you missed something special. His ethereal soundscapes and deep running basslines had the crowd stitched up good and proper, he deserves every accolade he has won thus far...and all the recognition that's coming his way in the future. The man has talent and his set was by all intensive purposes, a beast.

After that Ivan Turanjanin and Monique Pascall were granted the task of winding down the dancefloor, which they did perfectly. By the time we left it was almost 2:30 a.m. and we had definitely gotten our money’s worth. The bus trip back was quick and painless and it wasn’t long until we were in town looking for more, but of course it was futile. Parties like this only happen once in a while so I reiterate, if you missed it, you have my condolences, you missed out.

All in all, if you need a number 7/10. See you at the next one.

Over and out.

Tomorrowland to Be Held For 2 Weekends in 2014?

0
0

Although organizers haven’t made any official announcements about the 2014 edition of the festival, considered by many to be the best in the world, a local newspaper has revealed that ID&T has already received permits for two weekends. The Antwerp Gazzette states that Tomorrowland will celebrate its tenth anniversary with two weekends of festivities, instead of one.

Extending to additional weekends has been a common trend for some of the world’s most in-demand festivals. Ultra Music Festival in Miami was held over two consecutive weekends this past March in celebration of its 15th anniversary and Coachella in southern California has been running for two weekends for a few years.

Radio Slave will be joined by Life & Death's Clockwork, whose recent debut album, B.O.A.T., received high marks and praise from critics and fans alike, helping to cement the young Italian's status as a true house and techno purveyor. Rounding things out in room 1 will be Another Party co-founder James Manero and Jimmy Lainas, while in room 2, the joint production between Duel and Dos, or RAW PROD LTD, will be taking command for the night, amongst others. Boasting festival grade 3D visual mapping and state-of-the-art sound system across all rooms, Pulse London should make for the perfect setting for next Friday's bash.

Shazam's Top Tags For 2013

0
0

Shazam recently released their top tagged tracks for the year, and 2013 saw another incredible year in the worldwide rise of EDM. Even in the UK, the most tagged track of the year belonged to a certain golden haired Swede.

In the UK, Avicii's country ballad turned synth heavy EDM hit 'Wake Me Up' was the most tagged track by users of the music tagging service, with Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' taking the number two spot. In the US, Thicke took the top spot with Avicii falling in at number 4 under Lorde and Pink, possibly hinting that while the States has seen a meteoric rise in EDM in the last few years, hip hop and pop still rule there.

\

Worldwide, Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' toped with 17.8 million tags, and Avicii's 'Wake Me Up' followed with 14.7m, with the hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis coming in fourth and fifth after a blazing year for them. Daft Punk's summer antham 'Get Lucky,' which spent four weeks at number one in the UK this year, is sixth in the overall chart but is number 10 in the UK list.

Shazam also released its 2014 artists to watch list, which includes artists like Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, best known for his track, 'Animals,' and the youngest person ever to top the Beatport charts, as well as London born Sam Smith, who lent his vocals to Disclosure's hit 'Latch.'

Spotify Discloses Analytics To Win Back Artists

0
0

In an effort to prove its worth to skeptical musicians, Spotify has released a new Spotify Artists page including a description of how its business model works as well as its analytics. Artists can now view data for their streams of music including projected figures of how much they can expect to earn as the popular online streaming service grows.

Mark Williamson, the director of artist services at Spotify explains their motivation for the new site. “The position we take is look, we know Spotify is not perfect for all artists yet, but this is the theory behind it, this is where we are, and this is where we are going.”

Spotify pays out about 70% of its revenue to the rightholders. On average, Spotify this comes out to between $0.006 and $0.0084 per stream, but this small amount is then split between artists, labels, publishers, and collecting societies.

Spotify wants artists to think of payouts in total instead of on a per-stream basis. Using numbers from July 2013, it estimates a month’s stream of five different albums from $3,300 for a “niche indie album” to $425,000 for a “global hit album.”

When Spotify hits the 40 million paid subscribers mark as it hopes to, that same “niche indie album” is set to generate $17,000 per month with the “global hit album” making over $2 million.
