Kanye West Is Getting On The Prodigy's Nerves

$

Never one to shy away from expressing his opinion and telling it like it is, The Prodigy's musical mastermind Liam Howlett has taken to facebook to vent his frustrations with Kanye West. Just yesterday a post from Howlett read:

"Stop winging and complaining u loon , if u true ,respect is something u gain from what u do and if from the heart and real u take it how it comes accross to the peoples , criticisms and all . Get that!! ,, gettin on my nerves had to be said , Liam H." [sic]

It's clear that Howlett's talent is in producing head caving big beat tracks rather than expressing his thoughts via the written word, but you still get the picture. We can only wonder which of Kanye's bizarre outbursts Howlett is referring to. His delusional interview with Zane Lowe? The Jimmy Kimmel incident? Ah, who gives a sh*t...

If you haven't yet, make sure you check out Seth Rogen and James Franco's hilarious parody of the 'Bound 2' video here.

Red D Chats Belgian New Beat

$

Our Beat is Still New. This is the concept for Belgian's finest We Play House Recordings latest venture, a tribute to the biggest Belgian electronic music heritage of the ‘80s, new beat. For the concept, label boss and one half of FCL, Red D asked a selection of his favourite artists from the past and the present to create a track inspired by the Belgian new beat era.

The genre itself began life in the Antwerp nightclub Ancienne Belgique and became big in Ghent’s Boccaccio as a hybrid of electronic body music (another native Belgian genre known as EBM), slowed down new wave, any kind of weird dance music, and the early house records from Chicago. We speak to Red D, also known as his new beat alter ego Max Erotic to tell us more...

Red D, when were you first exposed to the sounds of New Beat and how do you think the genre has influenced you? I was exposed to it through some tapes I got from a football teammate at age 14. I was already liking synth-based pop more than rock, and I had just discovered Public Enemy and early hip hop, but this music was exactly what I wanted, but I had no idea how and where to hear and get it, apart from through those three tapes. So the quest began and it still continues to this very day.

You've got a pretty impressive collection of artists both past and present on the album, each which delivered their take on New Beat under a different alias. How did this idea come about, and tell us more about your own moniker, Max Erotic? From the day I had these tapes I was fascinated with the names and lyrics. Acid Queen, Taste Of Sugar, Erotic Dissidents, etc. Dirty lyrics, women moaning, didn’t need that much to arouse a teenager’s interest. I’ve always loved sex and dirtiness in dance music, and so all of that combined led to the idea of having everybody to adapt a new beat-styled moniker. Max Erotic was to be mine from the get-go. The fun thing is that almost all the names people chose could very well be porn actors.

Actually thinking about it, a lot of my favourite house records are just as arousing. For example Lil Louis’ 'French Kiss.' Where did you get that vocal sample from for 'I Only Wanna?' That is for me to know and for serious trainspotters to find out. It’s pretty obvious for any decent Chicago house lover from the end of the ‘90s.

What would you say is your New Beat anthem and why? Always a tough question, but today I go for Spectrum ‘Total Recall’:

That's very refreshing to hear, especially when sub-genres get muddied and sometimes it's easier to forget they exist in the first place. I always find seeing a Red D set a bit of a house education, as you often pull some favourites out the bag such as old Kerri Chandler classics. As most people who know you will know; you're a crate digger in their finest form. Judging from your front room stacked to the brim with vinyl, how do you narrow down your selection before each gig? Easy. It just takes me 10 minutes to throw some records into my bag and then I’m off. I never plan any sets, and I always take some old and some new, usually from all the records that are near my booth, because those are either the new ones I bought recently, or older ones I’ve rediscovered or taken out of my collection. Both constantly evolve so very naturally my sets vary and change from week to week and month to month. I love playing long sets with a small amount of records. That helps me be creative with what I got with me, exactly the opposite of a laptop set really.

Since it's inception in 2008, We Play House Recordings has built a large following in your hometown of Ghent and beyond. Tell us more about your WPH label nights. Where did they begin life, and what do you have in store for 2014? The label nights date back to 2005. They grew out of a monthly night called ‘Nightshift’ at Decadance in Ghent. That was a night dedicated to Detroit artists at that time, and I wanted to have a counterpart bringing more of a house sound. As such, ‘We Play House’ was born, and when I finally started my label, the name was easily chosen. The monthly night has long since turned into an irregular affair. I just put it on whenever I have time and whenever there is some DJ that I’d like our crowd to hear. So I have no idea what we’ll do in 2014! But I know it’ll be fun and it’ll be about good music.

In an ideal world, a world where DJ fees weren't through the roof, and money was no object, what line-up would you love to book for the label night and where would it be? Easy one. Laurent Garnier all night at Clues, my hometown (Deinze, near Ghent) residency for 18 years and very much a constant place of joy in my DJ career. All of Laurent Garnier’s tracks from the ‘90s are genuine classics in that place, so to hear him there all night long would be nothing sort of full circle and the stuff of legends. Mind you, if I ever have the money to spare, you can bet I’m going to put it on some day.

We have the pleasure of introducing the first exclusive stream for the newly launched We Play House radio. Tell us a little more about this months mix, and what's the inspiration behind your tune selection? Well, with the New Beat thing all around me in full force I kind of wanted to make a mix that reflects that. Again, I didn’t plan it really, but I did take records that have that old versus new feeling in them.

Check Out This Incredible Guide To Dance Music

$

Though it might be old and a bit cheeky, this interactive map through dance music is one of the most comprehensive and easy to use electronic music guides we've ever seen on the web. Named Ishkur's Guide To Electronic Music, the website maps out each major genre, from techno to trance to jungle, through all their subsequent subgenre's, like Detroit, epic trance and liquid step - up until it stopped being updated (sorry, no dubstep here).

You can click on any genre, follow through their many subgenres, and get cheeky descriptions from the author on how they originated and what they sound like, complete with several listenable loops from some of the most popular tracks of each subgenre. Tracks include hits like ‘Beachball’ and ‘The Sky Is Not Crying,’ from artists like Sven Vath, H-Foundation, Lil Louis, Dave Aude, Masters At Work, Chicane, Chris Liebing and more. Ishkur seems to have a particular distaste for all things progressive, or Brit, as he dubs it, which was one of the most popular styles back in the early 2000s, claiming that ‘if anyone could make house this boring and monotonous, it’s the British.’ The site also features breakdowns of popular analogue gear, including the 303, 808 and 909, and talks about some of the greatest samples in dance music, like the Amen Break. We got lost for hours in this site when we first discovered it, and definitely had a few trips down memory lane. We've provided a screen shot below, which you can click on to head to the site. Enjoy!

A blend of science and sound - MAX COOPER

$

0

South Africa has seen some amazing international artists this year, although I have to say that Max Cooper might be the most anticipated.

Control, humility and precision - emotion, release and catharsis. There’s two sides to Max Cooper. The public side is known for extended festival sets - a hybrid live/DJ performance that explodes from delicate, reflective electronica into abrasive noise within a moment, but just as fearlessly throttles back to moments of stillness and silent beauty - within the same track, across three or four hours of playing, or within the space of a couple of expertly chosen samples. What other producers see as an unbridgeable chasm between different styles, BPM’s, approaches, instruments and feeling, Cooper views as a single musical toolbox.

The private side of Cooper, meanwhile, is the humble scientist, the producer who works while others network, who is more influenced by modernist classical than dance-music trends, and who introduces new releases on his facebook with the self-effacing “I hope you enjoy this one!” Despite the affirmation of being made a Beatport artist of the year 2012, voted one of Resident Advisor’s top 20 live acts, and having, for influential US electronica site XLR8R, a top 10 most-popular podcast and single download, as well as two of its most popular videos, Cooper still feels he is at the start and not the peak of his artistic ambitions. There are more collaborations with visual artists to come, his debut album, a series of musical pieces inspired by contemporary art, his contribution to the FIELDS live-electronica label and tours - all part of his calling to fuse the gospel of science and rationality with the excess and exuberance of the most creative electronic music.

Blame that on Cooper’s background. Raised in a town outside Belfast, Northern Ireland, as a child Cooper was sent to a Steiner school - the only mixed-religion school in the neighborhood, but also one that pushed its pupils to be free spirits: independent and questioning, reflective and self-disciplined. And that’s how, first DJing local student club Firefly during his university years in Nottingham, he simultaneously managed to earn a PhD in computational biology (genetics) and produce his first tracks. And how, while stacking up the hours as a genetics researcher for University College London, he wrote his first significant releases for German techno label Traum Schallplatten: the trilogy of “Serie” EPs, each taking a different scientific concept as inspiration, both musically and in the collaborative animated videos he commissioned from Andrew Brewer / Whiskas fX.

Having retired his research job in 2010, Cooper is now established as one of the UK’s most intriguing, prolific electronic acts. There’s now fifteen commissioned experimental animations with filmakers like Germany’s Henning M Lederer, the UK’s Nick Cobby and Whiskas fX, France’s Cedric De Smedt, Russia’s Dmitry Zakharov and Italy’s Vicetto, to accompany his music - and a fanbase that regularly offers up its own visual take on his tracks. There’s a heavily trafficked podcast series that includes two seminal mixes for Resident Advisor and XLR8R, John Digweed’s Transitions show, the launch of the Magnetic Mag soundscape series, where Cooper released a hugely successful experimental podcast inspired by the British Library; Cooper’s research efforts with the staff of noted music-software house Line; his recent “4D sound” show in Amsterdam and his soundtrack for Zaha Hadid’s pitch for the Japan National Stadium, plus his back catalogue of nearly 60 original tracks and remixes. With all this, Cooper has pushed beyond his early apprenticeship as a 4/4 techno producer to become something new and unique in the electronic landscape.

As known now for visual experiments as his yearning and emotional reworks of huge acts like Au Revoir Simone and Hot Chip - and his more glitchy, experimental approach to working with traditional orchestral composers like Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm and rising Planet Mu-style mentalist Vaetxh - Cooper continues to evolve, absorb new influence, and change the rules for who electronic artists should work with, and how. The first producer outside of Richie Hawtin’s Minus Records family invited to join Hawtin’s prestigious booking agency, Clonk, he’s also the first musician ever allowed to rework the music of Michael Nyman, seminal minimalist and one of the world’s most identifiable soundtrack composers (The Piano, Gattaca).

With Cooper, there’s contrast, and also unity. A reserved, clinical producer who’s known for the emotion and melody of his music. The writer of delicate soundscapes for the female voice who quietly slipped out an EP of pounding snare rolls called Mechanical Concussion. A remixer of blog bands like MMOTHS, Halls, BRAIDS - and a go-to remixer for techno labels like Herzblut, Bedrock and artists like Bodzin, Romboy and Agoria. A minimalist who likes to relax with a bit of hip-hop scratching and turntablism - and who is working on ways to use turntablism to operate other electronic instruments. A live act known both to be both naggingly hypnotic and blisteringly tough.

A blend of science and feeling, risk-taking live performance and polished musicianship - in 2013, Max Cooper looks ready to become one of the biggest acts in the electronic world.

Pulse Radio caught up with Max Cooper ahead of his South African tour to find out what he has planned for the South African dance floors, the 4D system that he's been testing out and working with Tom Hodge on some new material.

You've been working with Tom Hodge on a few new EP's. Who is Tom Hodge and how did you guys meet? Tom is a pianist and all round amazing classical composer. I love his solo work and under his project "Piano Interrupted", so we arranged to meet to exchange some ideas and we seemed to have a common goal for a collaboration, so it all worked out pretty smoothly right through the process, he's great to work with.

Your video explaining the 4D system is impressive, do you think clubbing systems will head this way eventually turning how you listen to music into that much more or is it just museum experience stuff. It's a very specialist system that requires a lot of expertise, expenses and space to set up, so it's not right for most clubs. But I think it will spread to certain key venues around the world, as it's a totally new and immersive experience, and it can work for club shows as well as museum pieces - I do a bit of both for my show with it.

Coming to South Africa at the end of this month, do you plan on trying anything new or experimental? It will be my first time there, so it will all be a bit of an experiment - I'll be testing out different types of music and trying to get a feel for what people are in to there, it's interesting how people in different parts of the world have really different taste of music even in the same club environment. What gets people crazy in one place can clear the dance floor in another…hopefully I can avoid clearing the dance floor though, I'll go easy on the gabba to start with.

How have you been working your PhD in Genetics with your music at the moment? Any new developments? I finished my PhD in 2008, then did some post-doc work before ditching the science completely and focusing on music. I found that if I wanted to make either one really work, I had to devote all of my time to it, and I wasn't going to give up on the music so unfortunately the science had to go. I do still read a lot of science though, and have an active interest in it, maybe I'll go back that way someday when I'm too old for fat raves (MC Taz reference).

You said recently that you will be performing on tour with a visual aspect to your show? Any visual show we can expect for South Africa or should we dare you? Don't believe anything you read online! In which case that's not true and you should believe it, but then you shouldn't, but then you should….in a pickle now eh. But no, I don't have a visual show, you'll have to dare me.

Have you had any new means of inspirations for music you've written recently? Yeah, I've been doing some work with jazz musicians recently, Quentin Collins, a trumpeter, and Kathrin deBoer a vocalist. It was a bit of an experiment to see what would happen if we had a live jazz improvisation session with my music as a base, and it's sounding pretty interesting. I get bored if I make too music of the same sort of music, so I'm always looking for new ways to work to provide inspiration for myself, even if it turns out the people out there don't like it. I'd rather experiment and make 1 track people love for every 10 they don't, than knock out standardized tracks that fit a predefined format for success.

Catch Max Cooper in action this weekend at the exquisite new club in Johannesburg And on Friday as well as Pulse Radio's rated number 17 party to do before you die 'Kinky Disco' on Saturday.

Review: Seven Years of Ketoloco at Mint Club Leeds with Tale Of Us, Mario Basanov, Matt Fear

$

I have to be honest; I can’t totally remember my own seventh birthday. There will have most likely been cake, some sort of birthday garb and hopefully, a disco. Sadly for me though, I can be sure that Tale Of Us, Mario Basanov and Matt Fear will not have been the soundtrack to my turning the big 0-7.

Friday, 22nd November saw the classic Mint Club Leeds with its 500 capacity space and famous flashing ceiling taken over by the Ketoloco guys in celebration of their seventh birthday. For a party originally started off the back of a boys’ holiday of hedonism on the White Isle, and with such competition out there for people starting their own nights, it’s great to see a still-modern night celebrating another birthday, and with an absolute killer of a line-up to boot. I was a tad disappointed at first that I didn’t receive cake on entry, however it was for the best as the delicious drops we were about to be treated to were going to satisfy me more than food ever could.

After Matt Fear warmed up the room, Mario Basanov took to the decks, proceeding to rinse the crowd with a vibe (and second moniker) that he is becoming increasingly known for; the Ten Walls sound. The crowd were treated to a set jam-packed with unreleased material, as the young Lithuanian took the opportunity to try out tracks that we have yet to hear from either Basanov or his alter ego. Every track went down a storm, and as he got more and more into it, it was clear that although playing as Basanov, Ten Walls was well and truly in his head – not surprising after tunes like ‘Gotham’ and ‘Requiem’ became instant classics this year, gaining support from just about every house and techno monster jock there is. When he dropped ‘Gotham,’ the crowd Ketoloco unsurprisingly went wild, as seeing one of the Ibiza 2013 season’s essential tracks dropped by the man himself, under his original and initial moniker, was a birthday treat deserving of a big red bow. He also played ‘Requiem,’ and his own re-rub of Flight Facilities’ ‘Standing Still,’ along with a generous helping of German electronic tunes, such as Die Vogel’s ‘Maikaferbenzin.’ Basanov is definitely one to watch as he continues to be part of more and more people’s moments of dance floor clarity, and pre and post night-out listening.

As poetry is ordered in a timeless collection, or good art in a gallery exhibition, Tale Of Us’ set, whether planned in advance or not, seemed carefully orchestrated to be more than just music - it truly was an experience. As Basanov had already played quite a few of the tracks one would expect from Italian duo Matteo and Carmine, this gave them the opportunity to showcase new material and try out new tracks on the lucky crowd. Their track list was (quite literally) miles away from their sets in Ibiza, and as an avid fan, I was delighted to hear them play a great mix of tracks that hadn’t yet sent shivers down my spine. They started with Dixon’s remix of Mathew Jonson’s ‘Level 7,’ following it up with two hours of melancholic melodic techno, psychedelic trance and complex layered melodies, including amazing face-scratching tracks such as Guy J’s ‘Fixation.’ The duo also tipped a heavy nod to the Innervisions label with tracks such as ‘Den Ratta’ by Ame feat. Vulkano, and the beautifully haunting re-rub of Enola’s ‘On the Ground’ by David Shaw And The Beat. Ending with an instrumental mix of ‘The Island’ by Insomniacs, Tale Of Us opened the floor for the Ketoloco residents to finish the night off, leaving a dazed crowd with some fantastic memories, a heavy collection of Shazam tags, and wondering what Ketoloco’s eighth year will have in store for us.

Dirty South At Cielo In Review

There are some shows that you hear your friend’s talking about for what seems like ages – when everything from the production to the venue to the music is just right. Dirty South's sold out show at Cielo in New York City last Thursday, presented by Dance.Here.Now, was one of them.

Cielo, in the Meat Packing District, has an old-school-classic club feel with an unmatchable vibe and energy. A young, beautiful, and upscale crowd came to support their favorite DJ in this intimate venue. With a plethora of the trademark Dirty South “d”s spread around the crowd, Serbian DJ and Producer Dragan Roganović took to the stage.  The event marked the New York stop on his #YOURCITY tour focusing on "small shows and big fans."

From the moment he took to the decks, the energy exploded and continued to build throughout the night. Cielo’s lights and screens created the perfect environment to let loose and Dirty South did just that. He played favorites like “Walking Alone”, “Phazing”, and “Until The End”, each with his own personal remixes and edits that made the crowd pulse with excitement. And, to the crowd's delight, Dirty South was playful throughout the night, giving high fives to his fans and autographing items, all while impressively crafting an unforgettable set.

Dance.Here.Now. and Cielo set the stage for an unforgettable event, and Dirty South gave New York City a truly amazing and intimate opportunity to experience his music. The night went off without a hitch and Dirty South did not disappoint.

Man Walks Over 2,000 Miles to See His Favorite Band

How much would you sacrifice to see your favorite artist? According to Finnish newspaper Yle Uutiset, Frenchman Jordan Langlois trekked over 2,000 miles (3,500 kilometers) to see metal band Sonata Acrtica. The band’s keyboard player Henrik Klingenberg was shocked when he heard a knock on the door and saw Jordan standing there.

Langlois’ long journey took 140 days. “A lot of people ask if I’m crazy but I just wanted to do something different. When you’re walking you see things differently, and I’ll tell you a secret: I hate walking.”

He left his home in France in June and has since walked about 12 miles (20 kilometers) each day. His motivation? “I really just wanted to have a beer with the band.”

The band says that they typically turn away fans who come knocking on the door to meet them but Langlois received a warmer welcome because of the lengths he went through to get there. Sonata Arctica allowed the man to watch them make their new album and even took him to the sauna with them.

Flying Circus closes out the year in style with a very special New Years Eve party in Tulum at a beautiful beach venue. Ring in 2014 with a special performance by Audiofly and M.A.N.D.Y., who will be playing b2b as M.A.N.F.L.Y. along with their friends Tiefschwarz, Robag Wruhme, Pachanga Boys and Maayan Nidam. Balcazar & Sordo, Dance Spirit (live) and Flavio Navarro will also be gracing partygoers with their sonically appealing sets.

London natives Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito became Audiofly back in 2002. They quickly became regulars in the London scene, releasing mixes, edits and tracks for underground imprints such as Fantastic House and Deleted. Their breakthrough EP, “Release Yourself,” was released on the Low Pressings imprint and skyrocketed the duo to another level. Most recently, the pair formed their own label, Supernature, which serves as a platform for new talent and a home for the duo’s productions. Luca and Anthony are versatile supermen who juggle throwing massive ragers, DJing all over the world and managing their Supernature imprint with grace and success.

Another dynamic duo, Phillip Jung and Patrick Bodmer are the childhood friends who go by their moniker, M.A.N.D.Y. In 2002, they joined forces with their friends Booka Shade and DJ T and formed Get Physical Records, of the industry’s most recognized imprints. You may be familiar with their track “Body Language,” which flooded dance floors and DJ charts for years and was named “Ibiza Track of the Season 2005.” The Berlin-birthed group describes their sound as “an enviable arsenal of electro kissing house while caressing disco and flirting with techno,” and are sure to create a magical evening.

It is a night of duos! Talented German brothers Alexander "Ali" and Sebastian "Basti" Schwartz, aka Tiefschwarz, began gaining recognition in the late 90s. Based in Berlin, they have released countless high profile remixes, including Depeche Mode, Madonna, Missy Elliot, Booka Shade, Platikman and dOP, among many others. They founded their label, Souvenir, in 2006 and never looked back. The brothers are currently on tour and have been all over Europe this past summer, from Sankey's in Ibiza to Watergate in Berlin, and will definitely get the crowd going in Tulum.

Gabor Schablitzki, aka Robag Wruhme, is a legend in the electronic music scene. He gained international recognition as part of the German duo, the Wighnomy Brothers. The duo played together for 17 years between 1997 and 2009. Gabor created his ‘Robag’ alias in 2002 and has also done one EP as “Rolf Oksen.” Robag has produced releases on Musik Krause, Circus Company, Freude am Tanzen and Vakant. That year, Gabor also released his second album as Robag, The Olgamikkis, as the debut release for Nachtdigital festival’s new label arm. He’s currently shifted his focus from producing to travelling and playing DJ sets.

The German Pachanga Boys made waves last year at Burning Man and have kept the strong momentum going this year with a series of well-received releases and tour dates taking them all around the world. Leading lady Maayan Nidam picked up DJing in 1999 after travelling the world and living in New York for six months. Nidam, who also goes by Miss Fitz, eventually found her way to Berlin where she has been there for nearly a decade and has built up an impressive discography under her many monikers. She has released EPs on Raum, music, Freak n’ Chic, Contexterrior and circus company as Miss Fitz. She also goes by Laverne Radix and has released singles for Oslo’s Love Letters from Oslo and for Raum. Her debut release under her own name came in March 2009 and was followed by an EP on the international label Perlon.

Balcazar & Sordo are the Mexican duo who came out swinging for the fences a few years ago and have since been supported by the likes of Maceo Plex, Droog, Dj T, Danny Howells, dOP, Luciano, Alex Niggeman, Richy Ahmed, and of course, M.A.N.D.Y. and Audiofly. They are undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with! Dance Spirit describe themselves as “a philosophy based on attaining subconscious perfection through rhythm, timbre, melody, and movement.” This dynamic duo only adds another element that fits perfects with Flying Circus’ whimsical and magical aura in Tulum. Finally, local favorite Flavio Navarro will be capping off the night and ringing in 2014 with the best of them as this magical night takes those lucky enough to attend on an adventure to another world and beyond. Thankfully, this is not the last time Flying Circus will come to the US of A!

“We are looking forward to launching more events and residencies in the US, starting with LA in January. Look out for more dates in the Flying Circus world tour – coming to a city near you! Also expect FC to return to the White Isle of Ibiza in 2014…” says Neil Evans, from USA and Ibiza based promotions company TOMO.

December is going to be an epic month for Flying Circus and everyone lucky enough to be involved. Gear up and bring your dancing shoes because these parties are out of control and there is no excuse to miss one!

American University Bans EDM to Curb Molly Use

The University of Massachusetts Amherst has officially announced a ban on all electronic music events in an effort to reduce the use of MDMA on its campus. The decision represents the University’s response to a recent surge in ecstasy use and a series of unfortunate events this summer involving drug related deaths at music festivals and shows.

College administrators see EDM as the reason for the drug’s rise in popularity and UMASS interim Vice Chancellor Enku Gelaye sent out a campus wide email stating the following: “We have grown even more concerned about the ongoing reports of overdoses… The Molly taking culture at these shows is real and now exceedingly dangerous to the health and safety of concert attendees.”

UMASS students are protesting the decision with a series of petitions as well as an organized flash mob outside of the student union. One petition reads, “UMASS Amherst Administration: Bring back EDM and agreement not to take illegal drugs.”

Student Body President Zachary Broughton made a statement to his fellow students saying, “I did not think it was the place of the University to dictate the behavior of students.”
