A native of New York, DJ Gina Turner made a name for herself holding down her own shows on Emerson's college radio stations, before becoming a mainstay in the local club scene. She bounced from Boston in 2006 to pursue her passion amidst the palm trees of LA. Under its sunny skies she started the DJ duo Staccato with the lovely Louisahhh!!!, and established the afterhours movement Major. Gina's electro house productions have been picked up by such prominent labels as Ultra, Defected, Ministry of Sound, and Tiesto's Black Hole Recordings. We caught up with her ahead of the release of her new EP, which will be coming out on her own imprint, Turn It Records, on October 1st. Pulse Radio is happy to premiere and provide a free download of the Mitch De Klein remix of her forthcoming track "Speaker." Scroll down for the download link.
Although you grew up in New York, your music career really got going in Boston when you were a DJ on Emerson's college radio stations, WECB and WERS, while you were studying Audio Production and Radio Broadcasting there. Were you playing house music on your radio shows? Yes, I started collecting records and going to NYC clubs at a young age, and as soon as I moved to Boston I hopped right on the radio. I definitely played house music on my shows but very similar to now, I never found myself limited to only one genre. So I would play everything that I enjoyed at that time from DJ Shadow to drum and bass to Tricky to the house vinyl I bought that week.
From Boston you moved to L.A., where you formed the duo Staccato and founded an after hours called Major. How has living in all of these different cities influenced your style of music? Yes! Staccato was a DJ duo I formed with my dear friend Louisahhh!!! In 2006 and 2007 we kept getting booked on the same lineups, so we ended up forming a DJ duo to avoid "who’s opening for who" and we ended up really loving it. That eventually moved to us throwing this warehouse afterhours. I am so blessed and happy to have amazing friends who I draw inspiration from musically on a daily basis. This definitely happened in LA, and then eventually I had to make my way back to NY, and from NY I spread my wings more overseas to the Netherlands. Listen, I come from a city that’s already a melting pot, so if I can make my life even more of a melting pot musically, I love it. NY gave me my roots in house and deep tribal techno and in LA I flirted with electro and fidget a bit, but always kept my roots deep in tech house.
Are there any striking differences you've noticed between the East coast and the West coast in terms of the music trends, clubs and crowds you've encountered? New Yorkers are definitely more "balls to the wall" and "let's do the after party" and then the after after party, where my experience with LA was more only awake until 2am. That’s why I brought my little bit of NY to LA. Muscially, both the west coast and east coast are equally forward thinking and inspirational, and I love the crowds at both and I am blessed to do this!
How does your set differ if you're playing on the radio, as opposed to what you would play at a club gig? To be honest it doesn’t differ much, but in clubs you do have the advantage of vibing off the crowd so that there’s a great connection with you and your audience. But for me DJing on the radio is my favorite because I'm really in my zone without a boundary.
You recently had a string of gigs that included Pacha in New York and Space in Ibiza. Where are some of your favorite places to play? Pacha NY is definitely one of my fav places for sure. Space Ibiza was magical! Also U Street Music Hall in Washington, DC and Paris Social Club, where I have a residency. I love playing in Hong Kong, Switzerland, and I adored my Austrailian tour last year!
Where in the world have you yet to play that ranks highest on your bucket list? I really want to play in Italy. I am Italian Amercian so I would love that. Also, I really want to go to India! I'm a yoga enthusiast and also have my instructor's certificate so that would be amazing.
You've worked with such notable artists as Diplo, Steve Lawler, Tiefschwarz and Justice. What do you think are the ingredients for a successful musical partnership? Are you working on any forthcoming collaborations we should keep an ear out for? I’ve DJed with all those artists so we never really had a musical collar. But I loved being on Diplo's BBC radio one show. He’s always pushing the envelope so I really went crate digging and played some old school hits and new school flavor. I absolutely love the chemistry and I love collabing with John Roman, Mitch De Klein, Club Cheval, and obviously I love making the Nouveau Yorican tracks with Laidback Luke. I did just do a couple new collabs with Coyu (Suara), Club Cheval, Worthy, Surkin, Douster, Mitch De Klein, and many more that I can't name at the moment - top secret and I'm stillfiguring out the release plans.
What tracks have been on heavy rotation for you this summer? I have been playing everything off of the Suara Label run by Coyu! Its a fantastic label! Also, a lot goldFFinch, Jewel Kid, Technasia, Worthy, Kid Enigma, and of course I am always blasting Drake.
The Mitch de Klein remix of your track “Speaker,” is coming out this week. What was your inspiration for the track? The track "Speaker" was inspired by some of my favorite tech house elements and then I wanted to add a catchy little vocal that reminded me of my NYC club days in my late teenage years. Mitch De Klein is a real talent, so I knew his remix of this would be stellar!! He's definitely one to watch as a rising techno star.
Besides this awesome new tune, what else can we look forward to from you in the future? Well on October 1st the full EP comes out. Then I have another EP expected that’s a bit harder than my past releases, which should be released later in the year. I also did vocals for a Mitch de Klein track called "Krew" that I am super excited about! I have been working hard on an album that seems to keep becoming little EPs, so maybe by March or April next year I'll have something to release!
