Crazy P
Remixed (Vinyl Sampler)
[2020]

With over a decade in the business, Crazy P have become synonymous with dream laden dance music. Balearic disco, shimmering pop, and the type of deep house that comes packaged with an instant grin – it’s all been part of their template over the time. Saddling up to a home on Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Vision was a perfect fit for producers of repute and there’s a remix album forthcoming on said imprint re-inventing their tunes.

The vinyl sampler pushes out three of those remixes a as a sneak preview of what to expect, with the Leeds connection maintained by a pair of B’s in Burnski and Bonar Bradberry and a transatlantic twist from Wolf + Lamb. Unsurprisingly the results are great, particularly as all the producers seem to be visibly influenced by the group themselves.

Take Burnski, whose standard template of chunky and raw house music gets side-stepped in the form of a lush disco focused effort. Your reviewer is currently staring blankly into a foggy abyss in the north west of England but with this effort coursing through the headphones, all synth driven glory, scattered handclaps and mesmerizing Danielle Moore vocals, the landscape is suddenly sun kissed shores and azure skies.

Bradberry is next up with a re-imagination of ‘Eruption’. It’s a tough task making the original better, a record so sublime this reviewer would probably beg it to run off to Gretna and make an honest future out of it, if it was an actual person. So Bonar swerves that idea out the window, instead opting for a trackier approach that starts in a hypnotic fashion and focuses on the percussive element.

Snippets of the original’s vocal weave in alongside a very subtle atmospheric build, hastening the drama until the breakdown finally dawns. It’s then the original comes soaring back into sight, Moore’s glorious head-rush of a song and that epic piano line, but just as we get comfortable it slips back into house territory. If the original is your dream wife this remix is the cheeky cock-tease that leads you on, but tantalizing titillation is nothing to shirk at – particularly when it sounds this good.

Closing the release 2020 employ the services of New York’s Wolf + Lamb alongside Slow Hands to get to grips with ‘We only can only be who we are”. The result is on some delicious down-tempo shtick, the cohorts steering well clear of the dancefloor with a beguiling bassline, and a gentle guitar keeping everything nice and moody.

It even ends with a riff that sounds like it’s been stolen from one of those panpipes moods albums that soundtrack depressing shopping centres in places like Telford, but is actually quite good. It’s the final word on what is an extremely impressive EP, and the torch paper for Pavlov-esque salivation at the imminent full album.

Mr. Tophat and Art Alfie - 'KVK100'

Mr. Tophat and Art Alfie
KVK100
[Karlovak]

Swedish label Karlovak’s debut release from Mr. Tophat and Art Alfie sets a strong precedent for future material from the stable, as well as makes an emphatic statement about the importance of having some balls if you’re going to produce house music.

SDIK Baby is a rolling, soulful jam perfect for sunny afternoons on a terrace or by the pool. It’s hard to pick a favourite aspect of this tune, as it incorporates so many different elements so well. The jacking, raw percussion will delight fans of the punchier, ballsier, Chicago brand of house, while the bouncy, warm bassline is perfect for lovers of simple but effective grooves. Those of you who love a little bit of a soulful touch will immediately fall in love with the filtered chords and well-timed diva vocal samples.

On the flip, Malboro Lights takes things deeper and moodier, but still retains the soul and warmth that makes SDIK Baby so likeable. More of that oh-so-danceable upbeat, rugged percussion propels the tune, ably accompanied by deep sub bass and uplifting piano stabs and washy chords. The vocal edits are definitely the highlight here though, with some “UK bass” style pitch-shifting adding to their charm.

The BPM Experience: Direct from The Playa Pt.III

For Part III, we cover the madness that has ensued over Wednesday and Thursday, Jan 9th and 10th at BPM!

First, some great footage from the Circoloco party at Coco Maya on Monday the 7th, courtesy of Sarah Myers.

After the wonderous madness that was the Supplement Facts party at La Santanera, this writer took a well deserved rest. Wednesday night then brought the infamous Paradise party, imported directly from Jamie Jones' very own in Ibiza. Our friend HNQO warmed up the night with his own brand of vocal, sexy, and groovy deep/tech house. As with most serious artists, it's hard to encapsulate his style within a genre. His particular brand of house music sits somewhere on the edge of the Hot Creations Palette, treading new ground while maintaining something of the familiar vocal, groovy style they've become known for. Benoit & Sergio followed with a powerful live set, with Sergio in top form, demonstrating a crowd-moving, rockstar aesthetic bar none.   Then it was time to head to the private Robot Heart party. I feel privileged to have been a part of this gathering, as I feel about being part of Burning Man and the special communities I found there. I can't say much about the event, but suffice it to say, those who were there will remember it as a magical experience for some time to come.   After resting on Thursday, night time brought about the awesome Smoke N'Mirrors party pres. by Pulse Radio, with DJ Harvey, Pillowtalk, Death on The Balcony, Holosound, Galen, Shiny Objects, and a very, very special surprise with DJ Tennis taking things home at the end of the night.   Holosound warmed things up, bringing the benefit of his musical experience to the table, moving between disco, house, and techy goodness with expertise. It was a refreshing and original blend of many of the styles traversing the electronic globe today - all with a focus on dancefloor goove and smart vocals. Demonstrating the maturity required in an opening act (despite being a headliner across the world), he quickly got the crowd on their feet and prepared Death on The Balcony for launch. After blast-off, I spent some time on the dark bottom floor where Pillowtalk were keeping things slow and groovy. When Harvey took the reigns, things turned eclectic and mad, as one must expect from this man. The night ended with a truly unforgettable set from Tennis on the terrace, playing some of the best in emotive, atmospheric deephouse (I'm defying grammar on purpose here).

(Apologies for the vertical-ness of this feature film...)

Sasha: "EDM Is Made By Douchebags For Douchebags"

We're all well aware now of the debate that has been raging around 'EDM', the term coined to describe the dance music explosion America has been riding the past couple of years, which everyone from Scuba to DJ Sneak to A Guy Called Gerald have weighed in on. One figure who has been relatively quiet on the topic, though, is Sasha - until now, that is. It seems that a recent article published by Mixmag entitled 'The Great EDM Debate' has provoked the long-standing DJ to share his two cents, taking to his twitter and posting:

"Most EDM is made by douchebags for douchebags. Do i care if lots of douchebags buy it? Not really, But it pollutes."

Interesting. In other Sasha news, the DJ is making a much welcome return to Australian shores this month, which includes a set at Sydney's Metro Theatre on Australia Day.

Prolific London producer Duke Dumont, aka Adam Dyment, made his Essential Mix debut over the weekend with an impressive two hour mix of his own material, exclusives and influences. Here’s what Dumont had to say about his mix.

“For me, being from the UK, the Essential Mix is an institution, so I am honoured to receive the call from Annie & Pete. My aim was to give listeners an insight into the music that motivates me to record and also to showcase my own material, including some exclusive works. The overwhelming philosophy behind the mix was to represent what I play on a regular basis on my weekly travels around the world. The mix was recorded in a single take on a standard CDJ set-up, with the majority of tracks being edited to help keep a consistent energy throughout the mix. I hope you enjoy my selection and all the best to all upcoming producers & DJ’s engaging in their passion for music x”

Following their very brief visit to Australia last year for two sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney (which included some very exclusive Jamie xx DJ sideshows), English trio The xx are as promised returning for a much larger and extensive tour of the country this April, this time adding both Brisbane and Perth to their schedule.

The band's last visit was just a few months prior to the release of their now critically acclaimed sophomore LP 'Coexist,' which sees the group sticking to their brand of deep and emotive indie-pop, albeit more restraint and less poppy hooks than their debut. With Aussie fans now having had ample time to fully digest 'Coexist,' this upcoming tour looks set to be one of those lightning quick sell outs.

The xx 2013 Australian tour dates:

02.04.13 – Metro City, Perth
04.04.13 – Festival Hall, Melbourne
07.04.13 – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney
09.04.13 – Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Brisbane

Tickets go on sale Tuesday January 15th at midday.

Kaz James - From Melbourne to Ibiza

$

Kaz James has come a long way since the phenomenal success of BodyRockers, the dance duo of himself and fellow Aussie Dylan Burns. He has since established himself at the forefront of the global music scene, not just as an international purveyor of anthemic big room house and chart-topping tracks, but as a diverse producer who has worked with artists such as The Neptunes, Kelis, Macy Gray, David Guetta and The Gossip. 2012 was a defining year for Kaz James. Aswell as packing clubs around the world with his massive singles ‘Kids’ and ‘Drums’, he was personally invited by David Guetta to support him on his 2012 October Asian tour. With no sign of slowing down, Kaz James is ready for a new year as we caught up with him in the middle of his nation wide tour to talk new music, Pacha, 'pressing play' and touring with Guetta.

why3

Pulse:You just returned to Australia in November for the Stereosonic festival and kicked off your own national tour in December, what have you got planned for your shows? Kaz James: I have heaps of my own new productions and remixes to play which I am really excited about. A lot of them haven't been released yet so it’s going be really cool to see how they work on the dance floor!

Looking back on this year, what were your highlights of 2012? I’ve had a real positive year releasing music. I've had great radio play across the globe and great club support from artists such as Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Fatboy Slim, Jaques Lu Cont, Kaskade etc, which led to supporting David Guetta on his world tour which has not only been one of the highlights in 2012 but one of the highlights of my career.

How did your Pacha Ibiza residency come about and what did you gain from that experience? I've played at Pacha Ibiza for the past 10 years. I've had a great relationship with Pacha and the club. I have always had a great response to my sets when I play there. I would like to believe that I'm quite a versatile DJ and I can play a lot of different styles which really helps when you’re playing various nights which have different styles of music at Pacha.

You recently spoke at the Ibiza International Music Summit on the Australian music scene, what are the major changes for you since you began your career and can you make any predictions for the future of the industry? I think the art of DJing has changed so much since I first started DJing. I don't think it’s necessary these days to actually be a good DJ like it was 15 years ago at the start of my career. These days you can get away with pressing play on a laptop. I think the diversity has changed! Not to mention the record industry has really changed in terms of sales and access to music.

why2

How was the experience of supporting David Guetta all over Asia? Is he someone particularly influential to you? Touring with David was amazing he works so hard and is defiantly someone I really look up to. I was just really happy that he asked me to do the tour I had such a great time!

What was the creative process for your latest single ‘Drums’ and did you expect the massive reception it has received?
I recorded the record in London. I got the idea for the record after watching the Hives play at Coachella this year, they made the whole crowd get down and then when it kicked in everyone jumped up. Hence the vocal hook.

You released your debut album back in 2008, do you have plans to release another? I'm looking at releasing an album at the end the European summer in 2013 but nothing is in concrete yet!

Is it important for you as an artist to work with musicians from other genres, such as Macy Gray and the Neptunes? Yeah it’s really important to me as it keeps me learning and gets me inspired to make music. I love working with different artists and producers all the time.

why

How do you approach remixing non-electronic tracks like The Gossip’s ‘Move In The Right Direction’? Most of the time I re-write most of the music and only use a small element from the original. This doesn't mean I don't like the original but I just try and create something totally unique. I tend to choose the best elements that I like from the original usually a vocal hook or musical riff

What are your plans for 2013? I have a big year of touring ahead of me this year across the Globe. Plus a tonne of new releases you can check it all out at my facebook or follow my antics on twitter.

Trojan Sound System: Lessons In Dub

Trojan Sound System are the sole bearers and representative force of Trojan Records, probably the biggest exponents of Jamaican music and sound system culture to the UK, ever. Formed of the core selectors of Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad, flanked by ther long-standing vocalists Superfour, Jah Buck and Chucky Bantan, TSS have been touring the globe and spreading their positive message through the medium of bass. For the past 8 years TSS have blended ska, roots, rocksteady, dub and more modern mutations of bass music into their sets, also supporting the likes of Gregory Issacs, Horace Andy and many more on a regular basis. The quartet of selectors and vocalists are also gearing up for the release of their next single 'Africa' on their on TSS imprint. In this extremely special podcast, the gang recorded a live set, straight to vinyl and recorded in one single take. Earl and Daddy Ad tell us more as we explore this legendary label institution further and join the dots between the UK's obsession with bass music, old and new...

[Read on for download]

Hi guys, thanks for talking to us, you guys have been around for almost a decade now, what would you recommend to the youngsters as keys to longevity in the industry? Earl: You've got to hang on to your core values, in our case classic music and authenticity, while being constantly willing to adapt your music so that it's relevant in an ever changing world

Daddy Ad: I think quality sound and high standards on that front are really important too. Everybody (artists and fans) ultimately have a better experience and feels the whole thing in a different way when the sound is amazing. You hear and feel the music as the artist originally intended and in a different way to 90% of club experiences when it's good. You can chat with your mates because you can hear each other if distortion isn't being amplified and you'll still hear the music in years to come as you won't have tinnitus, nor be deaf.

'Africa' your latest single has made it onto itunes, can you tell us a little bit behind the inspiration for the release? Earl: We loved the track from day one when we finished it in the studio. It;s got a relentless power while at the same time being subtle and heartfelt

DA: Yeah, it has a powerful message so we wanted it to have a powerful riddim. There's not enough music that has something to actually say other than "I'm well sexy", or "You're well sexy", or "Let's party"... It's inspiring to be inspired and Superfour lyrics did that for me.

You blend a lot of different genres, what did you all grow up listening to? Earl: For me rhythm and blues (that's different to R+B!) and singer songwriters. I don't like saying this but Leonard Cohen was an early favourite! I've always loved good pop too. It's so difficult to make record that everybody likes... that's what good pop is.

DA: My parents are really into motown, blues, proper r'n'b and soul, so was very lucky thinking about it. I of course rebelled as I got hormonal and Heavy Metal suited the anger. Then I discovered reggae and the numerous forms of music it influenced. I haven't looked back since, but always look for anything that's quality.

What records will be keeping you warm in the winter months? Earl: I love my roots 12's at the moment. I'm listening to a lot of Tappa Zuckie. Daniel is a particular favourite of mine.

DA: Roots definitely helps warm the soul. We'll be working on a lot of music in the studio too and like to take inspiration from all sorts of places. Reggae and country music have a surprising amount of things in common. Rebel music!

You guys have toured the globe, where are some of the most amazing places you've been? Earl: We love Rome and Southern Italy generally.

DA: My fave has to be Japan for its fanatical nature and the pride they take in sound quality and playback. It puts 99% of clubs in the UK and Europe to utter shame. The virgin rain-forest in Trinidad on a more low-fi tip is amazing for it's raw nature, powerful vibes and world class surf is another.

As Londoners you must have seen the city's music scene change massively in the last few years, what things have you noticed most? Earl: From my perspective, it's all going the way we like it. The whole bass culture movement, bassline house, garage, grime. The revival of jungle and dubstep. Thats what we want to hear.

DA: Yeah, musically there's some good stuff going on with Bass Culture and we paved the way for reggae's resurgence years ago with the way we joined the dots with our club nights booking DnB/jungle, dubstep, bassline, garage, Hip Hop and more around it's Reggae foundation. It's pretty magical to now see the careers of other reggae sound systems and DJs are on the up again and a whole new scene of reggae sound systems starting up with youngsters. The biggest thing that has changed though is sound quality and it has got more and more degraded as technology has advanced. Even the simple art of properly setting up a turntable has been lost and the majority of DJs out there I'm afraid to say haven't got a clue.

As quite a large group how does the dynamic work between all of you in the studio? Earl: We've been doing it a while now and we;ve sorted out the ego thing. We all have different functions and we just have to trust each other.

DA: Both studio and live we're like brothers. Having worked so loyally together for so long there's an intuition like any good band. We sometimes fight like brothers too!

Finally, if you had to describe yourselves and your sound as a collective to people for the first time, what would you say? Earl: Modern Reggae

DA: A demolition truck full of bass, positivity and vibes!

Cosmic Kids: Reach For The Skies

Disco house duo Cosmic Kids will be playing at Holy Mountain in Austin, Texas on January 25th, hosted by local promoters Learning Secrets. Luckily for me, I'd been granted a short interview with the US duo as they touched into Texas for the first time. Ahead of their upcoming show with Bagheera, Cosmic Kids aka Daniel Terndrup and Ron Poznansky have agreed to answer some questions. West Coast, the Third Coast and every genre from, disco to rock and post-punk to ambient is discussed as Zachary McCullough gets cosy alongside the band on his home turf.

Thanks for joining me. Has playing at Fabric been a “big deal” for you? what kind of response did you get? Dan: Ron and I have been following the Fabric mix series since the beginning, so getting the opportunity to play the actual club was a huge honor. It was a special night because it was the 13th birthday party and it ran 30 hours straight. We got to play on a bill with Omar S, Bicep, Space Dimension Controller, and Kim Ann Foxman, just to name a few. We played a bunch of stuff we like. I don't know the best way to describe it, but you can give the set a listen on our Soundcloud.

How is playing in LA different than clubs like Fabric in London? Does LA Have a strong scene? Dan: We opened up the 3rd room at Fabric. Opening the small room in an LA club usually means that you will be playing to no one except for the bartenders. However, by the 4th song we played at Fabric there was a strong dance floor going, and by 30 minutes the room was packed. People there are just stoked to dance. Its exciting to play to a club of people who like to get lost in music. It gives you the freedom to try some weird stuff out. I think people in Los Angeles are a bit more self conscious. They need to wait until they see other people dancing before they feel like its okay to start. This causes dance floors to start late after people are already wasted. There are a few exceptions of course; i.e. Rhonda and Funkmosphere.

The two of you met in high school... you began making music together.... and you just played at Fabric among other places... what are some important things that have happened between now and then that stand out the most to you that have contributed to your success? Ron: I'd say around the end of high school we started to listen to KCRW and eventually volunteered there, Dan working in the music library and I as a production assistant on various shows. That really educated us on diverse genres of music. A big turning point to us was 2003 when we starting hearing a bunch of output from DFA. DFA was interesting to us because it combined disco and rock, which seemed to conflict culturally, but musically works really well.

Dan: A huge part of the process has been just making lots of like-minded friends. Its been great having a community of DJs and producers that want to help each other out and throw parties together.

Do you purposefully try and keep space between releases or is that something that has happened inadvertently? Ron: I'd say its partly that, partly the process it takes to release something, and partly the fact we have been working on a lot of remixes lately.

What was “A Day In The Desert” like? In regards to the ambient mix you recorded, was that the first time you’ve experimented playing non-dance music for an audience? Ron: We've played sets of post-punk and stuff before, but it definitely was different playing soundscapes and stuff. The setting was very interesting, you could sit on a bale of hay and watch the bands (such as Austin's own SURVIVE) or DJs but the music was more for the people wandering around the rocky outcroppings nearby, it was more of music to compliment the setting, there was a small contingent wanting to dance, which I was able to satisfy with some early 90s ambient techno jams like Orbital's Belfast.

Have you ever performed a live set (or thought about it at least)? Ron: We think about it, we have some gear that could totally work in a respectable but slim for travel live set.

Do you look for music on a regular basis? what extent do the two of you individually seek out new music you haven’t heard? Ron: We have many outlets to hear tracks, whether its just daily updates of new releases, constant conversation with friends, or digging at various record stores. A big one is scouring YouTube.

Reginald’s Groove still seems as relevant as ever... since releasing Reginald’s Groove, how has your music changed? Ron: I think our music maybe has gone a little deeper in some ways but not afraid to have some pop elements to it either, I feel like 80s boogie, 90s R&B and ambient music has been an influence among many other things.

Has living in California has been most influential in your lives (as musicians and individuals)? Dan: The weather out here is definitely an influence, even if its just on a subconscious level. I think that contributes hugely to the "West Coast Sound" so many of our friends have in there music.

Ron: We went on tour with RAC, Classixx and Jerome lol, I think we all accomplish a sort of west coast feel in some way, which is why we toured from Tijuana to Vancouver. The environment out here is very conducive to a relaxed vibe.

Your Fleetwood Mac edit absolutely took off... Did you ever think that edit would blow up like it did? Dan: We weren't expecting it to take off, but I'm not exactly surprised. After all it's an amazing Fleetwood Mac song. All the hard work was done back in 1977 before we were born, we just threw some drums on it and called it a day. Its nice that it helped people notice us, but we obviously can't take credit away from Lindsey Buckingham's amazing work. And yes, we both are soft rock enthusiasts.

Is it going to be your first time in Austin? Austin is a very rock n roll town and kind of lives in this unique parallel between, singer-songwriter, rock of course, indie, blues and punk, leaving electronic music pretty much at the bottom. What have you heard about Austin and what can we expect from you on Friday in terms of song selection and whatever else you take into consideration)?
Ron: This will be my first time to Austin, I think it is the place in Texas that I have wanted to visit the most. I've always heard good things about it. The idea that Austin isn't really a techno city seems consistent with what I've heard. We've DJ'd other cities that are not really known for their interest in electronic music and somehow have gotten people dancing. I don't think we limit ourselves to a genre so anyone with an open mind and a desire to dance will probably have a great time.

Anything else in terms of forthcoming releases and tours in the near future? Ron: We have 2 releases coming out on Let's Play House, a remix of Local Natives and a remix of Classixx coming out soon, probably some collaborations and other material but too early to mention... an we will tour Europe in 2013.

Cosmic Kids will be playing at Holy Mountain in Austin, Texas on January 25th, hosted by local promoters Learning Secrets. Presaletickets.

Romanian DJ and producer Petre Inspirescu is the latest to take the reigns of the long-running Fabric mix compilation series, following on from Zip who released volume 67 late last year. With his mix, the a:rpia:r co-founder looks to follow the likes of Omar S, Ricardo Villalobos and Shackleton by crafting a set purely of his own unreleased, original productions.

Inspirescu had this to say about the mix: “I recorded the mix at home and arranged only from my own productions, as I wanted to try to offer a more classical touch to the music I make for the dancefloor and to present it to people. Some of the songs were recorded more than one year ago, maybe two, and some recently. The songs include recordings with a trio (violin, cello, piano) in my studio, other instruments, voice (soprano) and modular sounds.”
