There's not much Miley Cyrus hasn't done to stay at the forefront of the world's increasingly shortening attention spans of late but this "little" stunt may have flown under your radar (as it did ours).

On a recent Live Appearance on German television's Miley Cyrus played "We Can't Stop" with a novel accompaniment of little people with whom she later tweeted a group picture as "MC & The Boos."

Word of this comes just as Miley was reportedly dropped from the cover of December's US edition of Vogue and ahead of her forthcoming Bangerz album which hits stores and iTunes on October 8th.

Two Days at This Year's Electric Zoo: What We Saw

0
0

By the time the 4 train had arrived at 42nd street, one stop after I had boarded at Union Square, all of the subway cars were overflowing with the neon-clad “animals” that had answered Electric Zoo’s nature call. Undoubtedly one of the northeast’s largest electronic dance music festivals, E-Zoo is a five-stage event on Randall’s Island which has consistently boasted an impressive lineup since its inception in 2009.

Some of the industry’s titan-DJs come from all over the globe to rock NYC down to its very foundations. To name just a few heavy hitters for this year’s lineup, Above & Beyond, Knife Party, Avicii, Flux Pavilion, Alesso, Sander van Doorn, Madeon, Dada Life, and Tiesto were all in attendance, completely dominating their main stage sets. Electric Zoo’s addition of a second main stage this year gave guests the opportunity to see quite a few more artists in action in a big stage setting.

Madeon, opening with his latest hit, Technicolor, gave yet another great performance with his somewhat unique French-rooted style. Above & Beyond, known for literally bringing concert-goers to tears of joy, lived up to their reputation with a beautiful and emotional set.

Dada Life, closing with their newest track, "Born to Rage," brought the crowd to an indescribable level of energy – champagne, bananas, and all. Having seen them a few times before, I was glad to hear some of their “older,” signature tracks coming back into rotation during their Electric Zoo set. Hardwell, as far as the crowd was concerned, could do no harm. He played a solid set, and certainly kicked the festival into high gear.

Big Gigantic delivered their usual solid show that brought a refreshing sense of variety to a festival overwhelmingly laden with solely CDJ-using artists. Now do not get me wrong, I loved the lineup, but throwing Big G in there was definitely the thing to do. Their live-music combination of electronic and more traditional instruments can get any type of music-lover jamming out. Moreover, did I mention the tenor sax? Oh, that tenor sax: so groovy, so jazzy, so perfect.

In that same light, Gramatik absolutely rocked the Hilltop Arena alongside his guitarist Ales. Ales’ riffs seemed to accompany Gramatik’s dubstep or heavy drops often on the downbeat, intensifying the overall sound and giving it a rock n’ roll spin that everyone in the tent quite clearly loved. His relatively unique approach within the electronic orbit convinced this reviewer that Gramatik’s set was one of the weekend’s strongest.

Another group’s set worth mentioning was most certainly that of Oliver. They describe their own sound as being “all over the map,” and that is exactly why they played one of the best sets of the weekend. Their performance incorporated a variety of styles, seamlessly blending groovy beats with harder and more energetic melodies that main-stage audiences have come to expect. On top of this, their nu disco and indie dance styles were prevalent throughout the set, generating the funky atmosphere that nu disco always provides so well.

In the realm of dubstep, notables, among many, included Zomboy and Dog Blood. Zomboy, playing earlier on Saturday at the 360 degree Hilltop Arena launched viewers into the day with aggressive, adrenaline fueling dubstep and high energy beats. Dog Blood’s set was alright, but the 3D stage was pretty cool. Electric Zoo provided free 3D glasses which definitely amplified the light show. All in all, it seemed like something right up Skrillex’s alley.

Electric Zoo drew a lot of talent to its stages over the weekend. As for the unfortunate occurrences that led to the festival's premature cancellation, there is certainly a lot to learn from them. My deepest sympathies go out to those affected by them. Nevertheless, like all things in life, these festivals demand a certain level of responsibility and self-control for all attendees. Event management can only do so much, and at the end of the day, we have to look out for one another.

Loco Dice And The Innervisions Crew Rock Cocoon

0

Ahhh, September in Ibiza. Locals and island regulars look forward to this month with Christmas-like expectations. Things start slowing down back to an island like pace, with bars and restaurants going from overcrowded tourist havens to sleepy local joints in a matter of days.

And much the same can be said about the clubs. As impressive as it might be to snap a few photos of an overly rammed Amnesia terrace in mid August, the reality can be slightly harsher. Don’t get me wrong, clubbing in Ibiza is almost always fun, and I’ve had some incredible nights out during the August rush, but it comes certain caveats. When things are that heaving, one must simply make peace with the fact that dancing isn’t likely to happen until light starts creeping through Amnesia’s glass ceiling. Instead, we all make due with moving out of people’s way time and time again.

But that’s what makes September all the sweeter. A bill with Dixon, Ame, Marcel Dettmann, Papa Sven and Loco Dice, combined with a knowledgeable and up for it crowd, and even a little space to bust a move or two on the dance floor, makes for one hell of a night. Cocoon superbly struck the balance on Monday night, with Dettmann giving the main room a full force Berlin treatment with slamming techno straight out of the darkest reaches of club land, while over in the terrace, Dixon kept the BPM’s low and the beats groovy.

Not wanting to miss any of Dixon, we were lucky enough to walk in just as he was playing one of this season’s favorites, the Matthew Styles Remix of Dinky’s ‘Falling Angel.’ From there, the Innervisions co-boss kept everyone entranced with a mix of melodic and tech, bouncing back and forth between the two with surgical precision. Heading from bass driven fair like ‘The Clapping Track’ by Claude VonStroke, which has seen heavy rotation this summer by the likes of Heidi and other jack-meisters, over to tunes like Jimmy Edgar’s whomper, ‘Strike,’ Dixon slid back to more emotional territory with piano laden grooves like Agoria’s ‘Scala’ without skipping a beat.

Âme’s Frank Wiedemann took the reigns after Dixon, playing a live set for the packed Cocoon terrace, and brought nothing but warm grooves and leg moving beats. Frank couldn’t help but enjoy himself, bouncing right along with breathtaking tunes like the duo’s remix of ‘Re:Stacks’ by Mario & Vidis Feat. Barbarossa. The Innervisions man was using his live controls to his full advantage, casually tossing the duo’s 2005 breakout hit ‘Rej,’ instantly stirring the crowd up as he cut the massive melodic tune in and out, giving the familiar track an edge few else could create. From there, Wiedemann unleashed an uplifting, inspirational vocal track, bass hovering just below the surface as he expertly fingered haunting chords from his keyboard, playing his instruments with the unbridled joy of a child. Come close to 4am though, Wiedemann turned the controls over, unleashing one last bomb with ‘Where We At’ by Henrik Schwarz & Âme & Dixon, as it was time to switch gears completely, Loco Dice returning to his old stomping grounds for one last free for all on the terrace this summer.

With artists like Marco Carola, I feel like I can explain simply ‘I saw Carola,’ and they’ll immediately understand the sound and feeling I heard that night. Having seen Loco at so many different venues across the island this summer, however, I can’t honestly pin down his sound. Techno, of course, but the range and breadth of it spans greatly from room to room and club to club, the mark of any expert DJ to be sure. At Cocoon on Monday, Loco’s techno was some of the most beastly, jacking, in your face music I’ve heard all summer. Loco was in the house, and it was a full-fledged party.

Early on, the Desolat boss ripped us into a furry with bangers like ‘G'zu’ by Marc Scholl, playing with the track’s massive acid builder like the pro that he is, CO2 blasting a hit of cool air on the sweaty masses below. From there, the flood gates were open for the Cocoon favorite, as Dice tore the terrace a new one with hot messes like wAFF’s ‘Puke It Up,’ ‘House 99’ by Paco Wegmann, and ‘Pompino’ by Butch, released on the Dice’s own Desolat earlier this summer. Though the night’s highlight had to be the ripping edit of ‘XR2’ by M.I.A.. horns blasting us with their furry.

It was another massive showing for one of the world’s most celebrated party institutions, with nary a figure leving the dance floor until the last beat dropped. Until next Monday, Cocoon…

Currently in the midst of his second US tour before jetting off to the UK to support Disclosure on a tour of their home country, Sydney's Harley Streten aka Flume has found the time to turn in a guest mix for Monki's 'In New DJs We Trust' show on BBC Radio 1 Xtra. With his mix Fliume tilts his cap to a number of his fellow Future Classic family members by including tracks from Seekae (their brand new single 'Another'), Chet Faker, Charles Murdoch, as well as international names a la Moderat and Mount Kimbie. You can listen to Flume's BBC Mix here - skip to 59 minutes.

In other Flume news, Streten has heaped praise on fellow Australian producers such as Hayden James, Touch Sensitive, Chet Faker, Willow Beats and the impact the 'Australian sound' is making overseas in a recent facebook post:

"Just wanted to say how proud I am to be a part of Australian Electronic music scene right now, and its not just me. I've been travelling the world for the past 6 months and i'm constantly getting asked in interviews about the "Australian sound" and this new wave of producers. I never thought much of it, being part of this new wave and all, but after this trip to the USA I'm starting to see it from an outsiders perspective. Australia, we've got something pretty special going on here, we've got our own sound, and the worlds starting to take notice."

Take a bow, Australia.

Classic production hardware company Moog have announced that they shall be discontinuing their Little Phatty synthesiser.

A Night with Culoe De Song

It’s been said, the Loeries weekend gets completely out of hand, but in the best way possible, and now with The Royal Family and Pulse Radio in town, together with Strange Loving, they plan on adding to the magnitude of the weekend of the 21st of September with something very special.

They have already secured international DJ Samu.l for the party on the Mandela Rhodes Place rooftop (see details) and if that is not enough for the night, they are kitting out Cape Town’s afterparty venue Republic Lounge into something that’s best described as an Audio/Visual love affair so that you can carry on the party to the early hours of the morning, with none other than one of Soulistic Music’s star players Culoe de Song.

Culoe’s music has been described as “epic African House with a strange touch,” while he sums it up as “a dramatic vibration of ‘the drum’.” Culoe’s chords sky-write while his rhythms writhe, and more than any other SA house artiste he’s managed to successfully segue international and local sounds – craftily mixing the best beats from both worlds.

The line-up of both the rooftop party and the afterparty will have you in crutches the next day as the dancefloor are what these guys do best - getting off the floor will not be easy, but who wants to do that anyway?!

After-Party Line-Up:

Behr (live set)

Culoe De Song

Kanan K7

Pulse Loves... Lazare Hoche & Malin Genie

0
0

We love a good partnership here at Pulse, especially when your music and edits are as funky, groovy and uniquely eccentric as Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie. The pair - bring together a wealth of sounds, influences and styles from their native homelands (France and Holland respectively) - are embarking on their latest LP, I Don't Sync So Volume 2, capturing the raw energy and carefree, fun abandon that brought their musical minds together in the first place (and garnered attention from Bicep, Kerri Chandler and more in the process). Devoid of any trends, the album is as straight up house as you can get - so with this in mind, Hoche and Genie step up for an exclusive (and rather funky) B2b Pulse Loves mix. Check it out below.

Pulse Loves.. collaborations. This is your second album together but how did you originally form a bond? How did you meet? Charlie ( a.k.a. Lazare Hoche) heard a record he really liked in a Club. He asked the DJ for the ID. The DJ told him he was playing a record called RAW JOINTS, a various artist EP on SlapFunk Records. Charlie bought the record. Some time later austrian artist Stephan Hoellermann, who released the first EP on Lazare Hoche Records, told Charlie to check out this guy Malin Genie. It rang a bell because it was actually the artist from the VA that he liked so much. So Lazare Hoche contacted him to see if he may want to release a record or some tracks. When Charlie traveled to Amsterdam in order to meet this guy they found out they had the same taste in a lot of things. Because they both had some beats and idea's laying around they decided to produced together an EP which became a 5 tracks mini-album. This is the second release on Lazare Hoche Records called: I Don't Sync So pt.1.

Pulse Loves... Paris' rich history of dance genres. Lazare, do you think the scene is Paris is as exciting as it was back in the days of Africa and so called 'French Touche' sound? The city is mostly known for electro these days. Well, I'm quite young to talk about the french touch but of course, I dig it a lot. I'm really proud of my city today and yesterday. Lot of sick producers and music lovers out there. I think those 2 past years the scene was quite evolving always good to see, the future is actually promising a lot here. But to be honest I must admit that most of my "music friends" come from other country.

Pulse Loves... vinyl - but you've decided to release I Dont Sync So II on wax only. What are you reasons for doing this other than your obvious love for the format. We don't hate digital, and we don't participate in the digital vs vinyl discussion. Its just more fun to release. We want to create a cool product with the people we like/ are involved with the record label. We just think its more fun to make something that you can hold in your hands and feel the texture and shit. Nice artwork. Something to collect! If you want to play it digital just rip the vinyl we don't mind !

Pulse Loves... the album format. Tell us about how you approached your album - it can be tricky to make one in dance music genres. Some of our most valuable albums that we have in the closet are doubles. Its just nice to hold and also a gritty old artwork just looks nice to have.

Pulse Loves: an exclusive mix. Tell us about the set you've made for us? What's the special ingredient and is it reflective of your usual set? It's a chill back to back. We played some of our own stuff but also some very good old & new record that we have and are happy to share with you.

Pulse Loves... the future. after the release of the LP, what lies ahead for you? Oh, lot of exciting stuff actually. We will let you know in time. All we can say so far is that we are working on a lot of different project including a sub label for Lazare Hoche Records! Stay tuned!

Diynamic Neon Nights: In Review

0

Solomun, the well-respected German underground producer and Diynamic label owner, has made his mark on the White Isle as part of an elite few who hold duel residencies on the island. In his second season of residency at Sankeys Ibiza, he has continued to build his name, together with the Diynamic label, across the 2013 summer. Having started his first ever Ibiza season with his residency at Sankeys Ibiza in 2012, this underground venue was the perfect launch pad and environment to reflect the underground Diynamic label positioning and ethos. Now having spread his reach to a new audience through his second residency with 'Solomun +1' at Pacha, it’s interesting to see how the producer is achieving such success with two promotions held at venues of polar opposite style.

Last night, Thyladomid opened the infamous black and red Sankeys Basement with some big, meaty, deep tracks. The youngest of the Diynamic boys, Thyladomid has been building his reputation as a house music producer since 2008, more recently joining the Diynamic label in 2011. He managed to capture the crowd throughout his set, moving the dark Sankeys basement to the vibrations of his basy tracks. Having a steamy contrast of melodic flows, abstract vocals and deep baselines, he keeps his dance floor of ravers rocking with their hands in the air throughout his 2-hour set. The award winning DJ started another solid night for the Diynamic boys.

Jumping through to the Lab, NTFO took to the decks, bringing a completely different vibe and sound to the dance floor. NTFO consists of two talented young producers and owners of the Sintope label, who have been riding the Romanian electronic new wave movement. Loading the Lab with explosive, pumping deep house, they had the crowd going wild around them, filling the podiums with grinning fans. Raving in the Lab is always something special in Sankeys, as it is only opened for specially selected nights, immediately creating a unique vibe with a different sound projection, contrasting feel to the Basement. Supported by confetti explosions and UV neon lights, these industry favourites were holding court, keeping their big deep vocal house flowing with pumping baselines, huge building drops and uplifting percussion. With tracks like 'Let Yourself Go' by Todd Terry Vs Simone Vitullo, they kept the Lab packed for Diynamic resident H.O.S.H. to smash the night out in style.

Closing the night out was the main man himself, Solomun, with a three hour set in the Basement. Seemingly Solomun’s natural habitat, the Basement venue is the perfect setting and space for Solomun’s distinctive underground deep sound. His set is immediately contrasting to his Pacha residency, with a deeper and darker opening. He manages to draw the crowd like only a true professional can, creating a sea of hands, camera phones and ravers in awe of what's to come.

His sound is certainly more underground at Sankeys, with unexpected experimental tracks and less commercial vocals sampled. Blowing out the basement with powerful vibrations, he pulls incredible crowd reaction with the Hot Since 82 remix of Green Velvet’s ‘Bigger Than Prince,’ heading over to Catz n Dogs feat. Monty Luke ‘They Frontin.’ He encompasses a professional talent, entrapping his audience on a three hour Solomun journey of emotive, quality, deep and tech house. For those lucky listeners that have managed to hear Solomun play at both residencies this season, you have perfect clarity as to why he has managed to maintain such success. With only two more weeks left of the season for the Neon Nights promotion, this has definitely been another night to remember for the Diynamic family, and an exciting start to the closing parties.

Grab your tickets to next week's Diynamic Neon Nights with Solomun, H.O.S.H, Stimming, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Karmon and Adriatique below!

However, this weekend’s jol on the train has unfortunately been POSTPONED to the 16th of November due to a freak structural issue at the party train’s destination.

Many will take an emotional blow with the news as the excitement was boiling over, organisers urge you though to keep the vibe alive! The train will call 'All Aboard' and you will party, just a little later. Keep your tickets as they will be valid for the 16th of November no questions asked.

Apple Announces iTunes Radio Release

Apple announced yesterday that it’s long-awaited iTunes Radio will finally launch this month on Wednesday, September 18th, the same day it will introduce its new operating system, iOS 7. iTunes Radio promises to be a strong competitor to other streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify, which also offer ad-supported services that cater to a user’s specific tastes. At first, the service will only be available in the United States but Apple expects to introduce it internationally soon.

iTunes Radio will have over 200 stations with songs from major record labels. Apple has signed deals with all of these labels to stream their music. In addition to the preset stations, users will be able to generate personalized radio stations based on a specific artist or song in their library.

The service is free but will include advertisements. Every 15 minutes, users will listen to an audio ad and every hour, they will see a video advertisement. According to Billboad, iTunes Radio is being sponsored by companies like Proctor & Gamble, McDonalds, and Pepsi.

Music companies are looking forward to the launch because they will have the opportunity to collect more royalties than they have with other services. iTunes Radio will make it easy for users to purchase songs they like, a huge selling point for artists and labels. In addition, Apple will pay labels 0.13 cents for every song streamed compared to only 0.12 cents on Pandora. Apple will also give music companies a portion of its revenue from advertising.

The Records That Defined Honey Dijon

Yello - Bostich

This was the first 12 inch I ever bought when I was a kid and I still have it to this day. I remember saving money for it and taking the bus 45 minutes from my house to the mall to get it. You never forget your first record you bought with your own money. I had never heard anything like it. It was the first time that I heard electronic music mixed with manipulated vocals. The roots of house music.

2. Mesopotamia B52'S

New Wave had a huge impact on the house music scene in Chicago. In fact you could tell other house heads if you dressed kind of punk. Laura Brach, the first female dj to be taken seriously in Chicago introduced me to the band. I guess you would call this nu disco now but I sometimes end my sets with this song because the vocal delivery and guitar are so MAJOR!

3. Play It Loud The House Factors

I get goose bumps every time I hear this track! So simple yet so complex. I love the looseness and the rawness of this track. Larry Heard was definitely ahead of the curve with this one. Still one of the most influential tracks for me and 25 years later it sill sounds as fresh as it did in 1988.
4. Welcome To The Pleasuredome Frankie Goes To Hollywood

DRAMA! That is the only word for the opening of this track. I'm a huge fan of Trevor Horn's production and it reminds me of Chicago House Dj's that would use nature sound efx like wind, rain, or birds chirping at the beginning of their sets. CLASS!
5. Let No Man Put Us Under -First Choice ( Ron Hardy Dub )

Butch may have brought his edit to a new generation, but it's Ron Hardy's version that sends me to the moon. Nobody did edits of disco classics like Ron. He always had a knack of capturing the essence of a track and making it raw and gritty. He has had a huge impact on me on how I approach and manipulate music as well as a dj.

6. I Want To Be Real John Rocca ( Farley's Hot House Piano Mix )

Everyone may know A.E.I.O.U as the more popular track from Mr Rocca, but I was always looking for tracks by artists that often overlooked. Piano in house music can often sound cheesy but this is so simple and chic and every time I play people ask me what it is!
