Listen to M.I.A’s ‘Unbreak My Mixtape’ in Preparation of New Album

M.I.A had been kept hanging on for a release date for her new album Matangi. But after threatening her record company with leaking her new music, the controversial rapper and producer has gone further and made a brand new track available to stream on Soundcloud.

M.I.A made the threat to leak her music if her record company, Interscope, didn’t confirm a release date after repeatedly deferring it. Reportedly, on that same day, a release date of November 5th was confirmed, straight after she took to Twitter to say ""Who would stop MATANGI from coming out? If interscope takes longer i can always leak this next week and make a new one by the time they are ready".

The new track 'UNBREAK My Mixtape' – available to stream in the Soundcloud player above - features a sample of Blur’s 'Tender' and should be enough to keep her hoardes of fans satisfied before the album's official release date. Stay tuned to Pulse for more information.

Pulse Loves... Andrade

Having caught the attention of Steve Bug and D'Julz, some of Andrade's first records arrived on the mighty Dessous and Bass Culture labels in 2012, Andrade is about as underground as they come. The French native is returning to Dessous with 'Magic Keys' and debut releases on 2020 Vision and Delano Smith's Mixmode are just around the corner. Read on as he mixes out latest Pulse Loves podcast. Over to you Andrade!

Pulse loves... history. Tell us a bit about yours and how you came to be bitten by electronic music and DJing. Electronic music bit me when I was 17 years old. I remember my first clubbing night in Paris. Jerome Pacman playing at Studio 287. From this day i started digging records, compilations and the history of house music.

Pulse Loves... your mix for us. Is this reflective of your current sound and style? This mix is my actual mood. This is the reason why half of the mix is my upcoming productions out in 2013 and the early part of 2014.

Pulse Loves... record stores. What's your favourite French record store and why? My only French record store is Syncrophone because I've been client of Blaise Mesnard since the beginning. The shop is just close to my apartment, they are really friendly and cool people.

Pulse Loves... clubs. Where's good to go out and discover the underground in Paris of late? Has a warehouse vibe hit cities like Paris, Lyon and Marseille much like it has in London? Its been two or three years that Paris is growing a lot in underground music. Let;s say that the vibe and the culture is coming back. So you can find excellent parties like Die Nacht, Sundae, Katapult , BP, Concrete and many others. The quality of music is going up. Even the young kids are now listening to Delano Smith, Zip, Raresh and many more underground leaders.

Pulse Loves... house music's all encompassing nature. You've seen the style come go and then come back again. What do you love most about this culture and the way it always changes? Is it a positive time for dance music? The last 3 years were a really positive time for house music, really good newcomers appeared on the scene. Techno is also hyping a lot at the moment. I think that it's a very good thing that guys like Omar S, Delano, James Deans Brown, Amir Alexander; they are now playing a lot and at the mean time stretching their public persona and offering people a real view of what house music is.

Pulse loves... Busy schedules. What's your's like for the rest of the year and can we expect new music soon? Schedule for the next months is a release on Delano smith's MixMode record label, One Records, Illusion Recordings and my own label Street knowledge.

Carl Cox's Revolution with Masters At Work: In Review

$

For just about any fan of house, Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez and ‘Little’ Louie Vega are names that carry a certain amount of mysticism and lore. The two command respect both through a prolific remix and production history and their incredible performances behind the decks. Combined, the two make up the duo aptly dubbed Masters At Work, a title given to the two by friend and fellow house music originator, Todd Terry. And after watching the American jocks take to Space’s covered terrace last night, it became perfectly clear why these two were given such a lofty title.

Before MAW took to the stage, we headed over to the main room where Magda was just taking over for DC-10 resident and favorite, Dyed Soundorom. Magda kept the pace to a minimum through her first few tracks, teasing with hints of the coming funk. Watching the Detroit-raised Items & Things co-founder seamlessly manipulate four decks from behind the booth was enthralling, as she constantly looped and cut, creating valleys and peaks on a whim.

She kept the vibe stripped down and dark, more minimal than I’ve seen at The Revolution this season, though the intensely underground vibe was a nice departure from some of the more banging fair usually associated with the night. Though once it was time for MAW, we made a quick split over to the terrace to catch these legends in action.

The duo immediately got into the groove, a word that’s since changed meaning after last night’s performance. The absolute serenity with which Kenny Dope and Louie Vega worked was astounding – seemingly effortless, yet incredibly meticulous – leading everyone in the room to conclude that they were indeed masters of the craft. Their sound was part tribal, part tech, part house, laying down tracks like Hot Since 82’s remix of Green Velvet’s ‘Bigger Than Prince’ and an edit of Romanthony’s ‘Let Me Show You Love’ as smoothly as a freshly polished ice rink, welling up to disco grooves that had the packed dance floor in pure amazement.

One club goer turned to me with the same awestruck expression as myself and explained that he flew all the way from California just to see this. I got the distinct impression the experience was worth every penny. Suddenly, Duane Harden, vocalist for Armand Van Helden’s 1999 chart topper ‘You Don’t Know Me’ took to the stage, belting out his soulful, diva-esque melodies with intense passion and energy, while MAW grooved on without skipping a beat. It was a moment that will surely be forever etched in the memories of all who were lucky enough to bare witness.

Of course, this being Ibiza, the action is almost never confined to one spot, especially in a club like Space, where the king of the dance floor was set to do what he does best in the main room. Cox immediately took the tempo up after Magda, pumping out driving, dark techno and tech house, creating a hot, sweaty mess of dancing, pumping and jumping bodies on the floor, reminding everyone exactly whose house it was.

There’s no denying it, The Revolution continues to rule the island, with the biggest and best lineups perfectly combined with all the attitude and spectacle to make any holidaymaker’s journey to the night an unforgettable experience. Until next Tuesday…

Grab tickets now to next week's Revolution with Carl Cox, Joris Delacroix, Just Be, Disclosure and Julio Bashmore!

A Votre Santé

German born DJ/producer Santé has established himself as an important player in a new wave of producers in the industry with his take on house music, which is a product of many different influences and doesn't easily fall within a specific genre. After several notable releases on labels such as REKIDS, Souvenir, and Desolat, Santé has started his own label Avotre, which has served as a platform for releases spanning several genres as well as a clothing line. Growing up in the city of Ulm in southern Germany, Santé moved to Berlin to pursue his passion of making and playing music and was quickly drawn into the world of electronic music. We had the opportunity to ask the man who describes himself both as a "party animal" and a "studio gremlin" a few questions ahead of his American tour at the end of August, which will kick off at the Electric Pickle in Miami on Thursday, August 22nd and continue through Stamford, New York, and Boston.

Many factors contribute to an artist choosing their own moniker and identity, what led you to choose Sante which means "health" in French. Was "Gesundheit" ever an option? It’s taken from the saying ‘a votre santé’ which means cheers, I decided on the the name after a long night out with friends. I was looking for a DJ name and that night we said santé perhaps a 1000 times, so I decided to use it.

Your love of the guitar brought you to Berlin to further your studies in music. Around what year was this and how long did it take you to get drawn into the world of the music you're known for now? I have been playing in bands and produced my own music since I was 15 years old. After I finished school in 2003 I moved to Berlin and found a job in a big studio where I was hired as a composer for TV commercials. I worked there for 6 years.

What are some less obvious musical influences your fans might not know about? New Order, The Cure and Joy Division...

You will be playing four cities in the US at the end of August: Miami, Stamford, New York, and Boston. Are you visiting any of these places for the first time? What are you looking forward to the most about the ones you've been to before? I will visit Stamford for the first time and I’m pretty excited because I have heard many great things about the venue. I am also very happy to meet my friend Dennis Ferrer in NY to spend a few days in the studio with him.

What were some highlights of summer season so far? Definitely Eastern Electrics Festival in the UK and all of the Sunday’s I’ve played with Viva Warriors at Sankeys in Ibiza.

Any low points along the way? Luckily, none yet.

You’ve worked with several artists such as Tiefschwarz and Frank Lorber. How do these tend to come about for you? Does a label make the suggestion or do you just develop friendships along the way? I have had a long term relationship with everyone I have worked with so far. Tiefschwarz is a close friend as well, although these days it’s not easy to keep in touch.

Your label Avotre features a variety of musical styles and doesn't limit itself by being genre specific. Why did you decide to go in this direction? It’s my personal and musical platform where I can release good music and where genres do not matter. I always want an element of surprise with every release and also to give my friends the opportunity to release unique tunes.

What's on the horizon release wise that Avotre fans should be on the lookout for? Be on the look out for two brand new releases from Philip Bader and Anna Wall.

What producers have really been impressing you of late that we might not have heard about yet? I am really into Deetron, DJ Koze and Caribou at the moment.

Tell us more about your clothing line and how it coincides with your label. As I mentioned before Avotre is a platform where I can do all the things I like and are passionate about. I’ve been into street wear fashion for ages, so I decided to release music and fashion together. The concept behind it is once a year we release a compilation whereby the artwork of it it’s also part of the clothing line.

When you’re not touring, producing or running a clothing line what might we find you doing (besides sleeping)? I am totally into wine. I want to start a Sommelier school in autumn of next year. This is my plan for the future...

Turkish Bodybuilder on Ecstasy Breaks Into Germany’s Air Force One

A Turkish bodybuilder believed to have been under the influence of marijuana and ecstasy broke into a German government jet while it was parked on an airport runway in Cologne, Germany on July 25th. Wearing only his underpants, the 24-year-old man was holding a bag full of marijuana and pills as he wreaked havoc and had a private party on Angela Merkel's plane.

By the time police were able to put a stop to the nonsense, the bodybuilder known as Volkan T. had already spent several hours playing around in the cockpit pressing buttons, spraying fire extinguishers, and even activating the plane’s escape slide.

The police only became aware of the problem when the man unknowingly triggered an alarm in the cockpit. They brought dogs to help detain the man who was resilient and refused to leave the plane, even after he was bitten twice in the leg.

Officials are not quite sure how the man managed to gain access to the plane. They explained, “It is believed that the intruder may have had an argument with his girlfriend before driving from his home in Cologne to the airport. He then blagged his way past security claiming he was going to a wedding reception in the officers’ quarters before climbing a barbed wire fence and climbing on the plane’s left wing.”

There are still many unanswered questions like, how did he manage to get through airport security in his underwear saying that he was going to a wedding? Luckily, the Cologne state prosecutor ruled out terrorism as a motive. Over 100,000 euros worth of damage was caused by the incident.

DJ Girl The Movie Is Likely Not Coming To A Theatre Near You

It’s the endearing story of Royer Adams, a girl with a dream of making it as a DJ in a “boys club that’s not exactly open to a smiling girl simply out to have a good time.” Add to the mix some well developed original characters: Davina, “the sexy best friend;” Dylan, “the cute record store owner;” and Gunther, “the metro buddy.” It all comes together in a comical low-budget movie aptly titled “DJ GIRL.” Join Royer on her journey as she interacts with “undercover ravers, a jealous ex with a headphone fetish a bitchy club owner, the world’s cattiest fashion designer, and a man named Carrottop” and proves her talent as an up-and-coming DJ and producer.

Check out the trailer and meet the full cast below. Hilarity will ensue.

A few hours after posting this article, the movie trailer was mysteriously taken off of YouTube and the movie's official website.  In addition, the actress playing Royer does not list her role in the movie on her IMDb page.  We wonder why...

Pulse Radio Pit Stop: Daniel Bortz

Daniel Bortz's talent has led him to be one of the most in demand DJs at the moment.  Born in Berlin, he moved to Bavaria at a young age where he grew up and got involved in electronic music.  Although he has been extensively touring all around the world, he still makes time to return to his hometown of Augsburg, where he has a residency at a local club Schwarzes Schaf.  We got a chance to catch up with Daniel ahead of his show this weekend with Bespoke Musik on Friday, August 23rd at a TBA location in Brooklyn.  The German DJ tells us about his roots in his hometown, why he loves playing at Bespoke events, and the process of making his new album.

Be sure to get your tickets to the New York event on Pulse Radio!

Augsburg isn’t the first city that comes to mind when thinking about house music but it seems to be an important one to you. Tell us more about Schwarzes Schaf, which means “black sheep” in German, and why you keep playing there. Schwarzes Schaf is a small (but not too small) venue in the center of Augsburg. In the beginning it was not really a club; we chose it as an alternative when we had problems with other venues with volume, etc. In 2004 I started a new party with some friends called "Monkey Biznizz." The concept was to alternate live musicians (bass, keys, mpc, etc.) with DJs. It was a mix of soul, funk, hip-hop, and house music. In 2007 I decided to create my own event “Forza Electronica.” For me, it is really important to have my residency in my hometown. It is where I developed all my moods and styles. Also my DJ sets.. It’s like a playground for me.

You’ve had the pleasure of playing for Bespoke Musik in New York several times in the last few years. What are some of your favorite aspects of their signature, intimate parties? It’s always nice to work with Rocky and his Bespoke Crew and the crowd is very open. That means that I can try new things and gain a lot of experience with my sets. It’s a familiar feeling in a different location.

You’re known for your warm DJ sets, productions, and remixes but now you're working on an album, which fans are eagerly awaiting. What are some of the challenges unique to this process compared to making individual tracks? It depends. I think I’m not only know for warm moods; I also play and produce cold and melancholic stuff. I am always trying to bring my mood into the tracks. I think it’s a big challenge to produce an album with a lot of uncertainties. I didn’t really have a concept and I don’t know why I did it. But now it’s too late.. The master is ready and the promotion is in progress. So there originally wasn’t a concept but after I put the tracks together I found out that there was a concept… what?! Most of the tracks are reworks from old sketches and tracks. I rearranged some loops and melodies, sometimes I just kept one sound. I think what making my music also takes is the nerdy process of listening for eight hours to just one loop and shifting a kick/clap 1 mms to the left or the right. I also tried to sing on some tracks and got two voice features from friends in my hometown. I think the result of the album is a not exactly professional minimalpopelectronicaindiedance album.

You recently played for our friends at the Flying Circus at Sankeys Ibiza on August 9th. What are your thoughts on the island this season? It was a pleasure to meet the guys Anthony and Luca!!! But I cannot really say a lot about the island because I was there for too short of a time.

Can you tell us more about how you started working with Suol? Are there any upcoming releases on the label that we should keep an eye out for? We found each other in 2011 and what I really appreciate is to have a label where I can release different styles. I don’t really know what’s coming next other than my own stuff. My Maxi EP is coming out in the middle of September and my album will be out in the middle of August.

Midseason Jams: Ibiza's Five Hottest Tunes

$
0
0

It’s August in Ibiza, and that means it’s hot, busy, and most importantly, it’s that time of the season where we can begin to look back at some the biggest and most heard tracks so far. So here’s our list of the top five tracks in Ibiza up until now. Because, of course, once we talk about them, they’re no longer cool…

Breach – ‘Jack’ (Dirtybird/Atlantic Records)

Like ‘Party Non Stop,’ the top pick is as easy to throw in the top spot of any summer hit list as it is to hear on a night out, as everyone is rinsing this bass heavy jam these days. Unlike Pirupa’s 2012 tech house bomb, Breach’s jam is packed with super stripped back, raw energy, indicative of the swing in taste that parties like dirtybird have helped to bring to the island. Once the bass kicks in on a good system, nary a body on the dance floor can help but bust a fat move, and it’s a tune that stays in your head for days after listening. Props

Tale Of Us – ‘Another Earth’ (Minus)

I first heard this at the Winter Music Conference this year on Ship Of Fools. M.A.N.D.Y. threw it down at around 9am (I think), and after 10 days in Miami, this was the record that made me remember why I make the trip to events like these. The track is truly cutting edge, with an utterly massive synth line that comes out of nowhere, ripping a hole in your head as big as the speaker it scorched out of, cascading down into one of the darkest bass lines around when the song breaks. Tale Of Us's first release on Minus seems almost too good to be true, if you like your music with an evil edge to it, that is. It’s definitely seen some big playtime around parties like Cocoon and Circoloco towards the beginning of the season. Let’s hope it makes a grand return towards the end.

Hobo – ‘Incise’ (Minus)

Another Minus smasher (and my favorite tune so far this season), this track got the treatment by Maceo Plex at the Amneisa opening, just before heading to Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’ to finish things up for the day, as well as Uner’s Pulse Radio podcast. It’s, deep, twisted, undulating synth grooved out of Amnesia’s terrace speakers, shaking the floor and vibrating our chests as Maceo danced along, making for one of the most welcome returns to any club a techno fan could have asked for.

Italoboyz – Hi Fi (Saved)

Out on Saved Records, run by Ibiza favorite Nic Fanciulli, and his brother Mark, this track has been getting smashed by Nic, Dubfire, and many others this season. A pure groove, without too many bells and whistles, it’s the perfect track to really build upon, ripe for cutting, looping and tripping out however DJs see fit, making it prime material for the island’s best jocks.

Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat – Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr (Skint)

This infectious jam has blown up since its release, with a hook line that gets deep inside your head and refuses to leave. Listeners are guided through somewhat disjointed, hallucinatory experiences by what sounds like a stoned Californian who travels to diners, parties and clubs, having many strange things happen along the way. It’s a pure party record, which is exactly what makes it so fun. Hell, who hasn’t had a few blurry, surreal nights out? And I know come August here in Ibiza, Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat is a way of life…

World's Largest Record Collection Worth $50 Million Unable To Sell For Just $3 Million

This is a rather sad tale of the digital world we now live in. We first met Pittsburgh's born and bred native Paul Mawhinney and his epic record collection two years ago via that now infamous vimeo film 'The Archive' directed by Sean Dunne. In case you haven't seen it yet, or perhaps you need a little refresher, check it out below.

The Archive from Sean Dunne on Vimeo.

Mawhinney owns a whopping 3 million records - the largest collection of vinyl in the world. Due to his advancing age and ongoing health issues (he has diabetes and is legally blind), Mawhinney has been trying to sell his $50 million valued collection for a mere $3 million for 2 years now, though as he sadly laments in the film, "no one gives a damn." To pour more heartbreak on the situation, yet another ebay auction fell through in February.

It's a rather sad comment on today's digital music era. Surely there are record store owners out there who would want to get their hands on this collection?

Will Saul Australian Tour Confirmed For December

Australian events and touring agency Finely Tuned has confirmed that London DJ, producer and owner of the esteemed Simple Records, Will Saul, will be visiting Australia this summer for a handful of DJ shows in December.

Saul launched the Simple imprint in 2003 which has grown to become one of the most respected labels in electronic music, with an emphasis on quality and a release history that favours no one genre or sound. Sister label AUS Music followed in 2006 with a focus on the new UK house and bass sounds from artists such as Joy Orbison, Ramadanman and Appleblim. The guy's no slouch at DJing either, just as his entry into the Balance series and recent Essential Mix proved.

Most recently, Saul has been busy with his new CLOSE project which has given birth to this year's LP 'Closer' - a home-listening focused effort that flirts with pop and soul with a modern dance music undercurrent. You can read our recent interview with Saul about the project here.

Stay tuned to Pulse for show announcements in the coming months.

Saints Don't Sleep With Ten Tale Telling Tracks

Saints Don't Sleep define their last 12 months in music, ahead of their next event on Friday 13th September. (Get your cheap ticket to see Nicholas and Homework here)

Casting all superstitions aside, the Saints will be celebrating their one year anniversary at South London stronghold Brixton Jamm, recruiting a very tasty lineup with which to do so. Featuring the likes of Homework, Nicholas, and Rob Amboule as well as two secret guests, we can't think of a better way to cap of the festival season (Get cheap tickets here on Pulse).

SDS was initially founded in 2011. After two successful parties in which they recruited blossoming acts such as Dark Sky, Pariah, XXXY and Synkro, personal arrangements forced an extended hiatus before picking up where they left off in September 2012. We asked the guys to best sum up the last year through 10 key tracks...

1. BNJMN - Keep The Power Out

Above all, the collective SDS goal was always to put on a party that all sorts of people will enjoy whilst putting together forward thinking lineups with artists that you don't see week in week out at other London club nights. This led us to call upon the services of BNJMN who's releases on Rush Hour Records had greatly impressed us.

2. James Welsh - Nastro Azzurro

For our second outing at Brixton Jamm, we turned to Hypercolour sub-label Losing Suki and brought in James Welsh to headline alongside James Fox. A chilled out number with some super smooth keys to form a winning EP. It drew our attention to James, who duly smashed it for us.

3. Jackson Blumenthal - Mama Gets Deep

SDS would not be what it is if it wasn't for it's loyal and diverse group of residents. Jackson Blumenthal (formerly Action Jackson) has come up with the goods for us on various occasions and this track by him was always a firm favourite of ours and our crowds. Two diverse and wonderful vocals blend together to make this tribalhouse cut a key summer jam. https://soundcloud.com/jacksonblumenthalmusic

4. Basil Hardhaus ft. Burrell - Black Man (Nicholas Black & Proud Mix)

Booking Nicholas was a big step up for us. He's an artist we had always looked at and was our first booking from overseas. His live set went down as always! This track epitomises what he's about - it's a classic remix with so much energy and attitude and one serious baseline. Simple yet so effective. It's an honour to have him back for our birthday show in September, this time dropping a DJ set.

5. Sand - A Taught LIne (Debukas Remix)

Debukas is the man. A really impressive musician with some amazing releases out on 2020vision. This track was always a favourite of ours and we were delighted when he opened his SDS set with it back in March.

6.Citizen – Glastique.

This punchy track reflects his style really well. Super sexy vocals, a rumbling bassline and crispy hi hats make this anthem a surefire dancefloor bomb. Definitely one of the highlights of our takeover of Noisily Festival's treehouse stage back in May.

7. DjRUM - Arcana (Do I Need You)

DjRUM is without doubt one of the most talented producers around at the moment. It was extremely difficult to pick a favourite from his catalogue but this song is good for so many reasons. Its progression, the contrast of the dark rolling bassline with the beautiful, delicate strings. Its got so much going on but it somehow all comes together so cleanly to make a club banger. This dropping was arguably the highlight of his set - amazing track, amazing album.

8. Rob Amboule - Who Knows

We're delighted to have an ongoing partnership with one of the best up and coming UK vinyl imprints around in the form of Nixwax Records. We frequently have their artists on our lineups and we hosted a label showcase for them in July which was a huge success. Rob Amboule is one of three founding members and has had a big year including a Boiler Room appearance and a record out on 2020Vision. This track is a banger and is the title track on the most recent Nixwax release.

9. Roy Ayers & Fela Kuti - 2000 Blacks Got To Be Free

We always try to have a contrast across the two rooms of Brixton Jamm. In Room 1 the focus is on the best of all things electronic while Room 2 can be anything from hip-hop to funk & soul, from disco to jazz. It's an impossible task to try and pick one song from a room that encapsulates so many genres but this song is a masterpiece and an SDS favourite from two bonafide legends. Some of the most catchy horns you’ll ever hear, flanked by a rhythm you simply can't avoid - what room 2 is all about.

10. Homework - I'm Into This

We want this show to be about friends and family, hence why we're bringing back a few old faces - but we also wanted to have a big headliner and Homework fit our criteria perfectly. We've been huge fans of their productions and sets for a long time, plus their style of house is exactly the vibe we want for this party. This is one of many stand out tracks in their catalogue, Moodymann's voice over the top adding extra sugary icing to an already sweet cake.

So there you have it, ten tracks telling the SDS tale. Click the link below to get your cheap ticket to their birthday showdown on Friday 13th September.

Die Antwoord - Diving Deep into a Whole New Level of Lusssh…

Is it just us or did it suddenly occur to you that Die Antwoord have been zeffing it under the proverbial radar recently?

Not too long ago Watkin Tudor Jones, or Ninja, wrote a letter ‘tuning his movements’ and what ‘ous’ can expect from Die Antwoord. For one we can expect a new album ‘Donker Mag’, so far the zef duo have conjured up ten tracks from the depths of that twisted dark abyss that will most probably come armed with enough shock-factor laced in the lyrics to put a raging bull down – who knows?

What we do know is they are putting an enormous amount of time into it with all the ‘dark juices that keep gushing’ to Ninjas mind. The highly anticipated release comes wrapped and packaged by Ninja’s most ‘favrit artist on da planet so we’re all gonna f#* die!!’ – We can’t say who, it’s still a secret he reckons. Looking forward to this!

Look, Die Antwoord are getting it right, one of South Africa’s biggest exports, a genuinely South African Rap-Rave band that Cape Town gave birth to in 2008 that are now dominating the globe with a cult like following. Yes they’ve been quiet, but they are about to release album ‘Donker Mag’ in early 2014 ‘wif a big fat world tour’ on-top of that. Anxiously waiting to see the itinerary to that. Until then, a recap on the vid they had recently released - Cookie Thumper.
