Nile Rodgers to Collaborate with Chase & Status?

$

0

Nile Rodgers has revealed that his next star turn collaboration is with UK drum and bass duo Chase & Status on his Twitter feed.

It's been something of a stellar year for the Chic frontman, who has also recently collaborated with Avicii, announced a box set of 12" re-pressings from the Chic back catalogue and is also appearing on the next Daft Punk single. The partnership is the latest in a series of eyebrow raising, questionable partnerships that have rolled out since Nile found resurgence.

Nile tweeted with the below picture: "Composed a song w/ drum n bass gurus @chaseandstatus earlier this year which I'll finish tonight pic.twitter.com/7LO0zZrAHl"

No further details have way been given around this rather disparate partnership, but it seems likely that the track could see Nile appear on C&S's forthcoming Brand New Machine album.

Stay tuned for news of where Nile may end up next...

The Records That Defined Adam Shelton

One Records boss Adam Shelton is knee-deep in house music, of all shapes and sizes. Rainbow Birmingham resident and production partner of Subb-an, he releases tunes on the likes of 2020Vision, Illusion Recordings and more whilst remaining well versed in many of the world's clubbing hotspots (including a stint in Ibiza this year that sees him touching down for Carnival Cities at Sankeys Ibiza on August 24th). A true head and lover of a 4-4 beat, read on as Mr Shelton points out the records that have influenced him the most & helped to shape him into the artist and DJ that he is today.

‪Marshall Jefferson - Truth OPEN OUR EYES‬

I first heard this on the Ralph Lawson 'Back to Basics mix, it totally blew me away and has been a staple classic for me ever since. This still sounds more advanced than most new music out there and has a lot more feeling.

‪Paul Johnson - Hear The Music‬

My favourite peacefrog release by far, this track never fails to create a good vibe, the whole ep is amazing but this is a special track that never goes away. One of my favourite essential mixes by daft punk from 97 features this track.

‪Mr Fingers - What About This Love‬

I am a massive larry heard fan, so many of his productions are stand out, there are not many vocals in house / electronic music that rival this in my eyes. This is what i want to be listening to at after parties, in bars, in my car, perfect easy listening.

Global Communication- The Way (Secret Ingredients mix) ‬

You can't help but be sucked in by the track, this must sit in a lot of peoples top 5, i just love how it builds and builds, from a dj's point of view this is such a great track to blend, timeless, classy and always does the job.

Sha-Lor - I'm in Love‬

When asked what is your favourite ever house track this is mine, hands down. I first heard jon da silva play this, for ages this was one of my more rarer records, i used to love pulling this out at parties, the original version is worth a bit now, you get what you pay for sometimes! pure style, its been cool to see this re pressed and shown some love again lately by rush hour.

PHFAT Break-Up: Disco Izreal is leaving Narch and Mike.

There has been a lot of excitement around PHFAT for the last few months with the coming and now released album ‘Happiness Machines’ that was out on the 22nd of July. The three lads, Disco, Narch and Mike, worked extremely hard on the album with the final production demonstrating exactly that. From the beginning, the small side-street Cape Town club gigs, the street parties, to the festivals around the country, they've always given it to us in our faces, huge stage presence with beats and lyrics that ‘said it’.

House Of Clashes from album - Happiness Machines

It is now with a heavy heart they say that Disco will be moving forward without the rest of the group. Instead, if you want to follow Disco he will be continuing his solo career with a project dubbed ‘Oh! Dark Arrow’.

If you’re wondering if that’s the end of PHFAT?? Fear not, Narch and Mike will still be flying the PHFAT flag high but with added live elements to maintain the energy and interaction they had with Disco - we'll keep you posted with forthcoming events.

We’ve put together a few pics of past gigs with the three with some of our favourites off their last…last album together - ‘Happiness Machines’ which you can download from HERE!!

Mozamboogy: Absorbed into the groove of the boogy.

In the midst of winter we finally arrive at the Kosi Bay border to experience a 4 day Music festival under the warm Mozambican sun. It’s here where we’ll be experiencing a host of DJ’s with genres ranging from Electro swing, Deep house, Techno, Psy and more.

The ride from the Kosi Bay border to Ponte Malongane was an incredible adventure in itself. We hop onto the back of a 4x4 buckie and speed through the sandy dunes giving us festival goers a kind of ‘Bundu Bashing’ experience as we bump from side to side to our destination. We pass through the local village which is within walking distance from the festival itself. The vibrant atmosphere coming from the rustic bars and restaurants awaken our spirits for what’s yet to come. The markets show off their fascinating local arts and crafts, and the locals welcome us with friendly smiles.

After a 15-20 minute drive we finally arrive in Ponte Malongane with an overwhelming sense of complete freedom and serenity. Located just horizontal to the taintless tropical white beach front, we take a stroll along the sandy pathway through the lush green forest where the light filters through the palm trees, we explore the hidden wonders in and amongst the forest and the earthy smell of the beginnings of what is yet to come…

Overwhelmed by our surroundings, we are drawn to the chilled techno sounds coming from the bar on the top deck which boasts an endless view of the sun-drenched beach front which seems to be never ending… The festival goers are sipping on their refreshing R&R’s (Rum and Raspberry), otherwise known to us as ‘Crazy Juice’.

The festivities got started on the Alternative stage with the jazzy melodies of Swing by Digital dream. Chris Palmer took over the Main floor bringing on the boogy for sunset with his groovy techno beats flowing into progressive psy. ‘PsYkt’ - A new comer DJ got our bare feet sinking into the sand as he spiraled us into a twisted trippy Psychedelic trance. From then on, we were drawn into the night, released into the collective moments together and detached from everyday life. We got absorbed into the groove of the boogy.

By the end of the evenings, each campsite would gather around to their bonfire to wind down to the beats of bongo drums under the starlight…

In addition to the Kaleidoscope of UV décor on the main floor, the deck upstairs displayed a laser beam projection of holographic art transcending into different patterns directly onto the ocean. It was absolutely mind-blowing to watch. The crowd radiated the purest most infectious energy, so powerful it cannot compare to any other party.

Michael Lesar brought character to the upstairs deck on the Friday afternoon! Everyone was feeling the Electric Swing with their swaying bums, dancing on the table tops. The energy was magnetic!

Hydro played against Hugo inviting us late into the Friday evening with the deepest sexiest minimal-tech set. In my opinion this was definitely the peak of the Mozamboogy heat. There was an overflowing spirit that filled our hearts and souls with desire which breathed energy into the crowd. They brought the deep bass, the climax, and the Oh so steamy drops…

An all-round well done to the organizers for a fantastic event! The staff was helpful and friendly and the event was very well organized and kept clean. They brought us to the Tropical paradise filled with adventure; activities; dancing the nights and days away to funky progressive beats; Psychedelic journeys; sexy swing and deep seductive minimal techno vibes that breathed an overflow of life and joy into our souls. Our souls feasted upon what was given to us in this beautiful experience and definitely made us hungry for more. I think I can speak for us all when I say Mozamboogy fulfilled each and every one of us and brought true meaning to P.L.U.R. – Peace. Love. Unity and Respect!

Here is the set that Hugo played at Mozamboogy - Recorded at Truth.

Lively App Monetizes Live Performances

$

Put away your phone and stop relying on low-quality YouTube videos to remember a show! The new Lively app allows concert goers to instantly relive the action of a great show while compensating artists at the same time. The app, from a Seattle startup, provides a platform for artists to record high-quality audio and video from a live show. Fans download the free app on their iOS and Android devices and can choose to pay either $4.99 for an audio recording of the show or $9.99 for both audio and video.

The artists themselves are given the majority of this income - 30% of the revenue goes to the Apple or Android app stores and the remaining profit is split into 70% for the artist and 30% for the company. The app has received support from members of performing rights organizations in hopes that it will curb illegal downloading and help to further monetize live performances. The company provides the necessary software and technology artists need to record their shows. See how it works here:

Today, Lively has announced that it has received $500,000 from investors. Founder and CEO Dean Graziano stated, "Lively is about helping artists connect with fans in a whole new way . . . Attending a concert is a one-of-a-kind experience. We want to let fans take the memories of live shows home with them, and provide a way for new fans to experience shows they haven't yet attended. The fact that we have such strong financial backing shows the momentum behind this idea, and we can't wait to bring more artists and fans on bored."

Pulse Radio Presents Beyond the Booth with Julia Govor: Francis Harris

Julia Govor is a woman of many talents, the USSR born DJ/producer got her start performing in a live show in a small military town and ultimately became the cassette-DJ at the town's nightclub. She eventually moved into Moscow to study film and TV Production and it was during that time that her life began to take off. She became an on-air personality for MillerTV and MTV and interviewed some of the industry's top names like Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, David Guetta and even Iggy Pop. She's signed records to Visionquest and Get Physical and recently relocated to New York City where she's working on building her name as a DJ on this side of the pond.

Pulse Radio knows a good opportunity when we see one so we snatched up Julia and her infectious curiosity and energy to host a new radio program for us entitled "Beyond The Booth" during which Julia will chat with various DJ/Producers about more than just what's in their record bags, tackling what moves them when they're not simply making and playing the music we love. Read on to learn Julia's story, and keep it locked on Pulse Radio as we debut "Pulse Radio Presents Beyond The Booth with Julia Govor" in the weeks to come!

For our inaugural episode of Beyond The Booth, Julia sat down with Francis Harris whom you may also know as Adultnapper and one of the minds behind one of our favorite new labels, Scissor & Thread.

During a relaxed afternoon chat they preview some of Francis’ forthcoming music ranging from heady down-tempo explorations to more of the fare you’d expect to hear on his dance floor. As is the concept with Beyond The Booth, they primarily discuss aspects of his life that aren’t directly related to music. In this edition Francis discusses some of his favorite books, writing a TV Pilot, tips for staying healthy while on the road and much more. Julia’s infectious personality keeps you company the whole way through. Enjoy!

Our Favorite Sets from KaZantip 2013

$

If you’ve been keeping it locked on Pulse Radio or been mindful of exceptionally good times globally then you’re no doubt well aware of Kazantip, the best times anyone ever has had on the beautiful beaches of the Black Sea. In it’s 21st year of operation, the Republic of Kazantip runs for approximately 14 days and aims to embrace the creative spirit of all of its “citizens” by encouraging celebrations and love in any form one wishes. One form of celebration we particularly enjoyed on our recent visit was the monstrous lineup of A-list international DJ talent that was on offer. Luckily for us all, our good friends at Be-At.tv were on hand to live stream many of the event’s most exciting sets and we thought we’d feature a handful of them for you to enjoy.

Maceo Plex brought his Ellum family to Kazantip’s Befooz stage which is the newest addition to the Republic’s staggering and widely varied venue selection. Located immediately to the left after entering the grounds, it’s got a forgiving wooden floor, large white canvas roof pieces and as with everywhere at Kazantip, a massive sound system. The visuals are top notch and the beach makes for a great backdrop. As the sun came up Maceo/Maetrik whipped people into a fury as the President of the entire Republic bounced beside him and the sea claimed more than a few frenzied ravers and lovers. Label mate and partner in Jupiter Jazz, Danny Daze preceded Maceo and served as the vital interstitial musical tissue after a great opening set from one of the label’s newest additions, Odd Parents. It’s hard to pick favorites as the music and vibes all night on this stage were fantastic. But we’ll let you see for yourself.

The Croissant stage is aptly named because the taught white roofing that envelops the dance floor looks like a big white croissant from a distance. What’s interesting experientially, beyond the world class DJs, sound and production, is that you can cool off in the pool located in the center of the dance floor. Check out Kollektiv Turmstrasse keeping things deep and H.O.S.H offering the flip side of the coin by bringing his classic bass-driven Diynamic sound. As with all stages at Kazantip there are plenty of lasers thrown in for good measure.

At Kazantip the sunset can mean very different things depending on where in your party you are but on the Befooz stage where things get particularly hectic during the evenings it’s a special time to catch your favorite artists playing more downtempo tunes while people filter through the booth for a hug or two and citizens filter through sharing the last rays of the warming sun. Here Philipp from M.A.N.D.Y injects a little love into everyone’s late afternoon.

Man Orders Weed on Twitter, Promptly Loses Job

It should go without saying that drugs are illegal in both the digital and physical realms - but try telling that to Sunith Baheerathan, a Canadian man who promptly lost his job as a mechanic after making an open statement on Twitter asking for drug dealers in the area to serve him weed.

After deleting the tweet (following the hilarious response from the York Police department, above), Baheerathan tweeted: "really gotta stop taking tweets serious lmao." But it didn't just stop there; the man's boss at his job (local car mechanic garage Mr Lube) told CBC news that Sunith had been relieved of his position, "but would not confirm the reason or any other details."

The official Mr. Lube Twitter account - breaking from its usual subject matewrial of oil changes and sexy rear wheel suspension - responded to the York Regional Police's reply to Baheerathan's tweet "@YRP Thank you to the York Regional Police for your help and great work. The matter has now been handled."

Moral of the story - don't be so obvious. Social media is monitored - just ask British Prime Minster David Cameron. He's going to clean up the internet,  single handedly.

This Hyena has the last laugh in the Burn Residency 2013

$

One of the three Burn Residency winners, Jan Jechna from Warsaw Poland nearly missed the boat for Ibiza to the boot camp of a lifetime. Pulse Radio catches up with him on his style of House and Techno and what it's like to be a resident at two of the hottest clubs in Ibiza this season, Mambo and the Sands.

What was the experience leading up to the win like? My story in the competition is a bit crazy if you look at the fact that I actually came in second in the Polish mix-off. Selvy, who was originally going to come to Ibiza, fell ill and I took his place. I was working a 13 hour shift when they called me up to inform me that I would be flying to Ibiza in two days’ time, so I was obviously very happy.

At the beginning, after arriving here on the island, I was really nervous. After that it's just good memories really, I think we all had a good time. I was trying not to be obsessed with winning too much; I just did the best I could.

What has the party island capital of the world been offering you? It's been really amazing, we live in this beautiful apartment above Mambo and we play and go out all the time. It's nice to work with the people at Mambo as they are all very cool. There is so much going on here, so yeah... the island has been treating me well. :)

Through winning the Burn Residency competition, what work has come your way? I regularly play at Mambo, alongside people like Kolsch, Guy Gerber or Junior Sanchez, and also at Sands.  Besides that, I try to spend as much time as I can making music in the burn studio at Cafe Mambo.

Are there any parties you have played at recently where you learnt something new or experienced something amazing? I got to know that Kenneth Bager, a resident from Mambo, is the original bad man behind this tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDSprbI3GBE. It's nice to be invited by him to play during his days here at Mambo. As I have to play more down-tempo, Balearic music, I am constantly finding new music so it's definitely a learning experience for me.

Being taught by some amazing producers and artists during the bootcamp, how important were these mentors to you in winning the competition? If you include James Rand from the SAE institute then I'd say that having mentors was definitely a factor in winning this contest. James was always there to offer some advice and help. I'm not sure if having masterclasses helped me win, but they were definitely very interesting, especially the one with Joe Goddard.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? Any plans now that you have this platform to launch your career and anything else related? That’s a tough question, I usually don't know what I'm going to do in the next three days! For now I just want to focus on production and finding new music. I'm coming back to London after my residency here finishes, and I'm hoping that after winning this I will be able to play more regularly.

Loco Dice at Fuse Ibiza: In Review

$

There’s been a vast amount of DJ swapping this season, with giants like Richie Hawtin and Jamie Jones headlining each other’s nights. And whatever your feelings on the matter may be, the fact remains that this new, unexplored territory draws plenty of bodies out the door onto the dance floor. Such was the case when it was leaked that none other than Loco Dice, who’s been spotted venturing far beyond the borders of his Used + Abused night at Ushuaia this season, would be taking the lead at the London turned Ibiza weekly, Fuse at Sankeys. So we headed deep into the red and black walls of Sankeys’ Basement to watch the master at work.

Official set times weren’t announced, stockpiling anticipation, as murmurs circulated around The Basement. One frantic clubber rushed in, asking his friend, ‘I heard he was supposed to be on at 1:30. Has he started?’ ‘No, I heard it’s 2am now,’ their more punctual friend replied. As the minutes passed, one could hardly bare it any longer, though the highly touted Fuse member, Samuel Bellis, who was playing his first ever gig at Fuse Ibiza, was keeping things locked in the groove ahead of Dice, making our wait for the big man that much easier.

Though once he did, there was no mistaking the man at work. From beat one, the pace went from laid back, stripped down Fuse grooves, to Loco Dice’s signature, snappy techno. Bodies packed in as tightly as possible, every punter with a smart phone recording the action, flash set to ‘on,’ casting Dice’s face aglow in a sea of white light.

Dice continued, throwing down bomb after bomb, taking things away with bass heavy techno and tribal tech madness, whistles and screams emanating from every corner of the ceaselessly rammed dance floor. His set dripped with signature Dice attitude, massive, raw funk pushing the energy ever higher, snare heavy, hip shaking rhythms that Dice is so famous for keeping the crowd pumping and thirsty for more, every drop eliciting an ‘ohhh’ and ‘ahhh’ from just about everyone with a pulse in the dark Basement of Sankeys.

If anyone had any reservations about seeing such a massive DJ on a platform like Sankeys’ legendary Basement, all was put to rest on Wednesday night, as one of the kings of techno made the famously low ceilinged room his for the night, putting on one of the hottest, sweatiest and most energetic  shows of the season, the crowd raging on, still shoulder to shoulder all the way up until 7am with a two hour back to back session with Fuse founder Enzo Siragusa and Julian Perez, who closed the night out in style. No doubt, it was one for the ages.

Grab your tickets to next week's  tINI And The Gang takeover at Fuse now!
